They are family owned and generous with their information. I love my wine and appreciate it when people (in general) spend extra time to share their favorites (BIG smiles). I HIGHLY RECOMMEND/DEMAND you request to taste the “McDermaid - 2007 Malbec” FYI - Family OWNED and operated (i.e. keeping it real) I AM IMPRESSED! Side Note: I’m an admitted Napa Valley snob (based on tasting experience) ;) TRY IT and LOVE IT! I know that we bought several bottles; not a regular thing, but I am looking forward to showing off my new found treasure amongst my snobby wine club friends :P Anonymous 3/9/2010 Matinez, CA I’ll admit it, I’m a bit of a wine SNOB and I love my CAB, CAB FRANC and MERITAGE ;) We regularly taste in Napa (preferred) and Sonoma Counties (sometimes pleasantly surprised) and everywhere else (Paso Robles has been a nice too). We have a ton of wine, so it takes something special to make us want to buy. I BOUGHT 4 BOTTLES of “McDermaid Family Vineyards - 2007 Malbec”! Looking back, I should have bought a case or two. Because they are just getting their name out there, they are currently way more reasonable than a bottle of any Napa/Sonoma. TAKE NOTICE: They MATCH the quality of CakeBread, Peju and/or St. Supery (ViSutti used to be “it” about 5 yrs ago). Why haven’t I heard of “McDermaid Family Vineyards” before??? It was this weekend, when we went to the Napa Mustard Festival ( I brought my own wine glass) and found this vineyard by accident. The bright yellow balloons attached to the sign of a local coffee shop enticed us to go in and check them out. All I can say is, “WOW!” Sobering experience, this wine is phenomenal. Enough said. Both my husband and I were in FULL agreement (that rarely happens) that their “2007 Malbec” is by far our new found FAVORITE! It exceeded our expectations, which is not easy to do We were both instant fans and I do think that we’re actually going to join their WINE CLUB?! (something we wouldn’t normally do). I begged the pourer (turns out he is the winemakers son?!), to sell me a few bottles; he looked sad, but assured me that he could not I was persistent and wanted to know more about our new found favorite (2007 Malbec). He was kind enough to allow me to put in an order for a few bottles; rules are rules. FYI - They shipped the wine BEFORE they debited my account?! We received the wine with a PERSONALIZED (hand-written) THANK YOU NOTE from one of the owners?! WOW, that just does NOT happen!!! Ever! Turns out that they are a family owned vineyard and even in this economy, they refuse to sacrifice quality for profit. WE ARE FANS! After talking to one of the owners (Sara McDermaid herself). I found out that they also have a WINE CLUB?! YUMMY! My understanding is that you can ONLY TASTE at the KELSEYVILLE WINE COMPANY located in Kelseyville, CA (again, family owned and just getting their name out there). I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND calling them up and ordering the 2007 MALBEC. They’re putting Lake County Vineyards on the map and going to give the Napa Valley something to strive for (according to me, “a WINE SNOB”) :P I learn something new everyday. THANK YOU McDermaid Family, for doing what you do! Um, un-corking my “2007 Malbec” and going to run it through my “Venturi” now... Just spreading the word on a well-kept secret. If you love your wine (even half as much as we do), you will NOT WANT TO MISS OUT on this one ;) ww w . n o r c a l v i w n ewy awr.dnsorcalvineyards.com .com Page Tasting Notes Prestigious Ultra Premium Red Hills Vineyard Estate McDermaid Vineyards- Lake County California RANCH BLEND 2007 Lake County The color extraction to this wine displays Deep ruby with aromas of fresh dried fruits such as Dried Cherry Blackberry violets and a hint of spice and pepper. Designated Lake County’s newest AVA in September 2004, Red Hills sits at the foot of the ancient volcano Mount Konocti, and extends from Big Valley on the west to Excelsior Valley on the east. On its southern edge, Red Hills is bounded by the high volcanic peaks of the Mayacamas Mountains. The rolling volcanic terrain of the region is in dramatic contrast to the wider valleys and higher mountains of the surrounding viticultural areas of Lake County. The Red Hills District is located entirely within the larger Clear Lake AVA, which fully surrounds Clear Lake and in turn lies entirely within the North Coast AVA. Red Hills is considered a sub-appellation of both the Clear Lake and North Coast AVAs. Of the 31,250 acres or 49 square miles in the Red Hills District, approximately 3,000 acres are currently planted to wine grapes. We estimate that an additional 3,000 to 5,000 acres are plantable. Soils Over 90% of the soils in Red Hills are of volcanic origin from neighboring Mount Konocti, producing welldrained earth that is rich in black obsidian and gravel content, and strikingly red in color. Three general soil types predominate: Glenview-Bottlerock-Arrowhead, Konocti-Benridge, and Collayomi-Aiken. The shallow depth and rich mineral content of the soils create an ideal environment for growing Cabernet Sauvignon and other premium grapes. Elevation In contrast to the more rugged topography found throughout most of Lake County, Red Hills is an area of gently sloping, rolling terrain, with elevations ranging from 1,400 to 3,000 feet above sea level. The cooling afternoon breezes found at these moderate elevations contribute to the favorable growing conditions of the region. Weather The Red Hills appellation benefits from a unique diurnal temperature pattern, with hot days tempered by afternoon winds that can cool nighttime temperatures by as much as 50 degrees. During the growing season daytime temperatures easily reach 90 degrees and above, but cool down each afternoon from breezes created by the sloping elevation changes around Mount Konocti and offshore winds from Clear Lake. The cool nights help preserve the acidity of the grapes and slow the ripening process, enhancing the flavor and complexity of the product. Red Hills lies within the Region III Climatic region, but is not impacted by coastal fog and various marine effects commonly experienced by other growing regions within the North Coast AVA. Average rainfall in the area ranges from 25 to 40 inches per year. ww w . n o r c a l v i w n ewy w a r.dnsorcalvineyards.com .com 10 Page 14 County Overview Prestigious Ultra Premium Red Hills Vineyard Estate W elcome to Lake County, where you’ll find beautiful rural scenery, friendly communities, attractions, outdoor recreation and activities offered year around.
