With property showing good signs of recovery and a more stable mortgage market on the horizon, now could be the time to look at your buying options. Low interest rates, competitive loan to value ratios and the emergence of the Help to Buy scheme have all contributed to an increase in buyer confidence and lending volumes. However, the Mortgage Market Review (MMR), which comes into effect on 26th April 2014, will see lenders looking even more closely at applications. A rigorous view will be taken of an applicants’ ability to service their mortgage both now and throughout the term of the loan, as well as looking at the impact of interest rate increases. This is not a doom and gloom scenario, but is certainly one that prospective buyers and those looking to remortgage will need to take financial advice on. The MMR sets out to reform the mortgage market and to make it more sustainable to consumers. With the property market picking up, Leeds city centre offers a variety of properties ideal for first time buyers, those looking to buy as an investment nth! or as a buy to let project. xt Mo Till Ne Oliver available properTieS The Chandlers The Calls, Leeds, LS2 7EZ Duplex (Split Level) One Bed 336 sq/ft from £74,950 Large One Bed 467 sq/ft from £84,950 Riverside and Fantastic City Centre Location - Walking Distance to Bus and Train Stations, Parking Available - Help to Buy Scheme Qualified - Mortgages Already Outlined to Status For further information or to arrange a viewing of our show flat please contact: Sales Office Tel: 0113 247 0777 Email: oliver@rossingtons.co.uk Web: www.rossingtons.co.uk www.leedscitymagazine.co.uk As part of our new office celebrations we have great deals for new landlords and tenants. City dweller Jordan Fletcher is back to put the world to rights, with another bout of ranting and raving. Craft beers are under scrutiny and he takes a look at The wolf of wall Street and Crowd of Favours. i love SundayS Great value at around £12... The red wine is decent too! I’m on a personal mission to find Leeds Best Roast so watch this space! RANT! CraFT beer overkill Don’t get me wrong, there are some great craft beers out there, but this market seems to be becoming far too overcrowded. For every great craft beer, there’s a hundred bad ones that taste like tar. Don’t think you can fool us by giving them ridiculous names and changing the colouring slightly. They still taste minging. edm overload ConTinueS Electronic dance music has been around since the days of Kraftwerk in the 1970s, but this hasn’t stopped greedy record companies cashing in, and acting like they invented it. Ministry of Sound have just released their latest offering of cheap and cheerful dance-pop-pap, that all sounds the same; Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat is guaranteed to give you a headache, and that’s just from looking at the garish front cover, never mind the generic ditties contained within. RAVE! Crowd oF FavourS This gem of a bar popped up with little fanfare last year, and has gradually built up a loyal following. As well as serving a decent range of booze and tasty burgers, they have some great nights on during the week. Tuesday is classic movie night, so bring your friends and enjoy the free popcorn and a classic on their downstairs projection screen. I love Sundays. For one major reason - Sunday Roast! There aren’t many better feelings than waking up on Sunday; hungover, and realising that feeling can be cured by a selection of meat, veg, potatoes and loads of gravy! My current favorite for a roast is the newly opened ‘Shears Yard’. Why? It’s only a minute or so from my flat on Call Lane and secondly, the food – it is properly brilliant! I’m much It was an absolute pleasure to catch up with Katy B this month; I’ve been a massive fan of this girl since I saw her live in Leeds a few years ago. I actually had to hold back at a few points during the interview, as I didn’t want my ‘fanboying’ to freak her out! With big plans for 2014 – I’m hoping she includes performing at Leeds Fest! Her album ‘Little Red’ is out now. It’s a great follow up to 2011’s ‘On A Mission’ where you can hear her development as an artist and the songwriting / production is really special… deffo worth checking out (and a great album for a run at the gym!) Talking of gym, hope you’ve kept up the new years health kick… I know I certainly haven’t ;) The wolF oF wall STreeT After a slew of over hyped films that didn’t quite deliver, this one stood out and instantly goes into my list of all-time favourites. How critics can say it glamourises greed and drug taking is beyond me. Anyone that thinks crawling across the floor whilst frothing at the mouth, being dumped by your wife and imprisoned for fraud is glamorous needs their head checking. Di Caprio and Scorcese prove that they have more comic chops than most imagined. My favourite film since Django. buZZFeed.Com more of a ‘starter and main’ boy than a pudding boy, and on my last visit I opted for the blow torched king prawns, smoked salmon and Thai style salad… look at it… immense. Then onto the main event, beautiful rare beef, with loads of the vegi and potatoey goodness. Served with a huge Yorkshire pudding. Come say hey on twitter: @AdamOnCapital Once you discover this website, it’s hard to get any work done, trust me. Featuring brilliantly comical and often useful videos, it’s incredibly addictive. With titles such as ‘Everyday technology you’re using wrong (especially good for Iphone users) sitting alongside celebrity parodies, and even Zsa Zsa Gabors really bad exercise video from 1993, there’s hours of entertainment to be had. 12 | City Dweller Magazine www.leedscitymagazine.co.uk A whole new downstairs level of refined luxury, elegance and comfort at our Leeds City Centre restaurant. There’s a new boy in town! Saying that he is an amazing young dancer is an understatement. His versatility and experience span from performing in contemporary and ballet companies. He has won dance championships, attended courses in New York and has won the first Finnish ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ televised competition. He is one of the 10-strong ‘Phoenix Dance Theatre’ ensemble. A highly acclaimed and world-renowned contemporary dance company. I can remember the first time I saw him on-stage in ‘Melt’; choreographed by their artistic director Sharon Watson. Story telling and honesty in every move drew me to Sam. His love and passion for dance shines through and he doesn’t feel guilty about sharing it. At this moment, the whole company is preparing for their new exciting show. Opening in February 2014. Am I thrilled? Without a doubt! A world premiere of two new exciting dance works and also a chance to witness a company classic. One afternoon, I decided to drop in on one of their gruelling rehearsals. I wasn’t just greeted by his friendly smile but a big banner of him draped across the buildings foyer. Am I impressed? Who wouldn’t be! As Sam guided me in to the studio, I witnessed the contagious passion and love these dancers have for their craft and their constant pursuit of excellence. The studio was like a sacred place of learning and giving. There was a generous feeling of openness and trust between the dancers and their rehearsal director; Tracey Tinker. I know all the dancers are working hard, I see it and hear it. The sweat and labours of their dance routines give rise to an intense exciting palpable energy. wiTh FaShioniSTa and CiTy dweller - tia rOQaa Headwear, Sexy Court Shoes and Super Cute Leisure Wear. Cleopatra, it took me five years to find an elusive spark of inspiration. I had to understand how sensuous the way of life was in Egypt, the opposite to the culture of Rome. This second edition is curated by award-winning maker of art, Wendy Houstoun. Events take place across Leeds, at Yorkshire Dance, The Riley Theatre (Northern School of Contemporary Dance), The Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre (Northern Ballet), The Tetley and Hyde Park Picture House. Wendy says of her first ever experience of curating a festival, “As a first-time curator I blissfully ignored practicalities and went for a kind of dream list of makers, performers, writers and talkers who all inspire and intrigue me. In all of them I find a clarity and an integrity of purpose, and a deep connection to their material and the way they relate to an audience.” www.leedscitymagazine.co.uk To advertise contact us on: 0113 234 0683 sales@city-dweller.co.uk PERFORMANCES Candoco Dance Company, Miniatures Gary Stevens, Not Tony Lucy Suggate, Liquid Gold Louise Wallinger, Annoying the Neighbours Grace Surman & Cathy Butterworth, Two Four One One Oliver Bray, The Animal was Upon Him Nicole Beutler, 1: Songs Louise Wallinger, The Dream Teller Jordi Cortés, In Heaven Wendy Houstoun & Co, Stupid Women ART & FILM Hugo Glendinning, unstill Karoline Hjorth & Riitta Ikonen, Eyes as Big as Plates Siobhan Davies & David Hinton, All This Can Happen Wendy Houstoun & David Hinton, Touched WORKSHOPS & CLASSES Louise Wallinger, Verbatim Theatre Jordi Cortés, Integrated Dance George Adams, Paizo [Play] Lucy Suggate, Give Us our Daily Dance Robert M. Live at Leeds - a showcase of live music. Local acts are ready to ‘Rock You!’ Last year we had 1975 in the Cockpit and we had 2000 people queuing up the road. It is a shame that not everyone could get in but I think that this also helps people see what the alternatives. We have loads of other bands on at the same time which people can go and discover. Live at Leeds is a festival that still has music at its heart; it caters to true music lovers and has thankfully avoided attracting crowds who are there just to be seen. We do try to tweet live what is going on, so we will send out messages letting people know 2 hours before 1975 go live that the Cockpit is at capacity. We also put on gigs throughout the year so people who play at Live at Leeds might play Leeds University a month later so we give people another chance to see acts they may have missed out on. Every May Bank holiday for the last seven years the festival has created a buzz across the city, drawing an eclectic mix of fans to venues ranging from the Pretty Green Store, to the iconic Brudenell Social Club. With the line-up to this years event now revealed it looks like this year will be no different. The festival not only showcases a diverse range of venues, it continues its diversity in the acts that it books. Covering a spectrum of genres, Live at Leeds aims to appeal to all. The festival also showcases up and coming acts as well as headline names. Local bands such The Mexannines, previous winners of Centre stage competition, will appear alongside current chart toppers Clean Bandit’s on this years line-up. It is this mixture that has established the festivals reputation for picking the most exciting new talent. A testament to these clever bookings can be seen when looking through the acts that have played in years gone by. Artists such as Alt- J and Ed Sheeran have previously graced stages across the event, playing to no more than 100 people before they became household names. You book a lot of local bands, how do you decide who to put on the line-up? I am very into the scene here so I will know a lot of bands already. We always need supports and so part of the way we do it is by saying “oh this band have sent us something or my mates have talked about this band, let’s put them on the show.” We have got bands that have played the futuresound competition and support slots. Stuff like that is where we can really find who the best talent is. Every band that sends something over will get listened to, so yeah there is a lot of research into what is good locally. Although the focus of Live at Leeds falls mainly on the Saturday, this jam packed day of gigs is sandwiched by other events organised by the Futuresound team. Kicking things off on Friday Radio One DJ Jen Long will be guest speaker at Leeds college of music. The weekend will be rounded up on Monday when promoters and band members take to the pitch to show off their skills ( and try to keep down the pints) in a football tournament held at Goals. We caught up with Ben Lewis, one of Live at Leeds organisers to talk about the festivals success and its plans for the future. Live at Leeds has always been a massive success, do you think that part of that is down to the city and venues embracing it with open arms? Yeah, other cities have festivals like this but there is definitely something about Leeds where everyone wants to muck in and be involved; over the years we have really developed that. Famously it has been a bad weekend for a lot of bars but since Live at Leeds it has just got better and better. Live at Leeds is our way of being able to showcase the whole city, it is really nice. I think now in Leeds there are so many people into music and wanting to find about these venues. I think that really contributes to the success of the festival. One of the benefits of Live at Leeds is getting to see big names in intimate venues however, because of the limited capacity sometimes people aren’t always able to see bands they want. What would you say to people who bring this up? 28 | City Dweller Magazine With the festival growing from strength to strength it is inevitable that the event will grow in scale, how do you think this will affect a festival that holds its events in small venues? If we are wanting to expand there will be places in the city we would want to look at and the new arena wouldn’t be ruled out. It is good that there is space to expand if we need to. But fans of the Live at Leeds format don’t need to worry as Ben added; “If the arena was a consideration it would be much more like the millennium square one off kind of event, rather than using it as a venue for the festival during the day.” Tickets for Live at Leeds are on sale now, for a full line up and list of where you can buy tickets visit www. liveatleeds.com LOVE PEACE N LOUISE www.leedscitymagazine.co.uk niGhTS ouT in leedS Tag yourself! leeds-citydweller www.leedscitymagazine.co.uk More images @ www.leedscitymagazine.co.uk City Dweller Magazine | 29 debra ware leedS uniTed inSider all the insider information from elland road and leeds united, courtesy of luFC liaison director, debra ware SprinG iS in The air - almoST! It’s almost Spring and here at Leeds United, we are incredibly pleased to announce the success of our Grassroots Ticketing Scheme. Since we began our reengagement with the City of Leeds to create a family friendly experience at Elland Road, we have been overwhelmed and inundated by requests from local youth groups, schools and Junior football teams. It has created memories that will last a lifetime with Juniors and Adults alike. We are now looking to reach out to other groups such as Scouts, Cubs, Guides, dance groups and many others to enhance the family environment. So far this season, the Grassroots Ticketing Scheme has had over 100 teams attending our home games and is going from strength to strength. With over 7000 people through the turnstiles, it has generated in excess of £16,000 Cash-Back. I have seen so much about the effects of over doing it. The problem is I cannot just have one drink . Every time I go out I end up drunk. I am now starting to go out mid week clubbing which is affecting my job. Is there anything You’re right the obvious answer is to stop before things become out of control at work. Maybe you could limit the mid week sessions to soft drinks and you will feel okay the next day. Generally we advise that a limit of 14 units for a lady per week should be okay. Anything over that and you risk damaging your body as you suggest. One way is to alternate between alcoholic drinks and soft drinks. The advantage of this is 2 fold. One - half the alcohol and Two keeping hydrated as you go through the night. Give it a try and see!!
