FashionAble Gala May 2016
For a couple of years,
the Participation House,
Markham Board has
been contemplating
hosting a large event for
raising funds. Much
planning and learning
has to happen before an event of this magnitude can be
a successful venture. During the summer of 2015,
Wendy Woof-Severn and myself worked with the
members of the Women’s Committee of Markham to
plan and present their Fall Fashion Show, with PH being
one of three recipients of all funds raised and together,
with Markhaven and The New Unionville Homes Society
we benefited with the proceeds of approximately $6500
for each agency.

The event was very successful and so the PH Board
embarked on the journey of having their own Fashion
Show Gala, aptly named “FashionAble”, which was
held on May 3, 2016. The campaign was directed to
funds needed to purchase a new fully accessible
vehicle. The event was very successful in raising over
$23,000 and together with a donation from a
Butternut Lane resident’s family, we are now able to
move forward in purchasing the van which will arrive in the fall of 2016. Almost 400
people gathered at the Hilton Suites Hotel & Conference Centre, Markham for a
lovely event including Silent Auction, incredible Raffle, Dinner and a fashion show
produced by the talented Haike Vaudry, showcasing fashions and accessories from
Bigley's Shoes and Clothing, Want Boutique, Peppertree Klassics and Sporting Life.
Many thanks to Allstate Insurance Company of Canada, event sponsor and 105.9 The
Region. A moving presentation by a Farintosh House resident’s mother Leea Nutson
and greetings from the Minister of Community and Social Services, Dr. Helena Jaczek
rounded out the successful evening.

Public Awareness
Not only was it important for Participation House, Markham to raise
funds for our new vehicle at the Gala, but equally important was our
Brand Awareness campaign for the community. Our partnership with
The Region 105.9 radio station resulted in “free” radio time, countless
interviews and live feeds which valued at over $15,000. In addition to
being personally interviewed live on the radio and on a program
called “The Feed”, one of our great supporters, Mark Cullen and 105.9
produced a commercial about PH and our services which is still
currently being aired. Every time I hear it, I feel moved and so amazed by its
impact on me.

Our Fundraising Coordinator, Wendy Woof-Severn was also interviewed on the
Rogers program “Daytime” along with our Gala Emcee, Rosie Ferguson from
105.9 The Region. This local television
program show cases agencies and current
events. How exciting it was to be on site to
watch this taping of a Live TV program. Our
social media exposure is growing from our 136
Likes on Facebook, 105 Posts on Instagram to
even our 39 followers on Twitter.

The Mandarin
As a result of the relationship with the Women’s Committee of
Markham, one of their members, Yildiz Unsal has been relentless in her ask to Mandarin
Restaurant corporate head office and manager Jimmy Lin for a donation for Participation
House, Markham. After weeks of eating at Mandarin and countless phones calls, Yildiz asked
us to meet her and her family on July 15th, at The Mandarin Boxgrove to receive a donation
for $2000 towards the Build a Van Campaign.
Thank you to Yildiz for your determination to help us
connect with the Mandarin.

One of our long time board members
Wayne King has inspired Home
Depot to help us out once again and this time it is a big win for PH.
Not only did Home Depot Managers Farhan and Tom present us with
a $5000 gift card on July 25th, but they are coming back with 10 staff
to re-do our lovely over grown
gardens at Henderson Group Home
and they will be bringing equipment
which they will donate to us
after they are done working. We are
very grateful for the opportunity to
work with the Home Depot staff
and for all their Giving Back to the
Community Projects.

Whole Foods Market
During the months of April to June, Whole Foods Grocery Store, one of
“the finest natural and organic” grocery stores in America invited us to participate in the Dime at a
Time Program. Customers who brought in their own bags were provided with a choice to
receive a 10 cent rebate on their grocery bill or to donate their dime to Participation House,
Markham. Board Members, Peggy Robinson, Garry Lander, Jean-Anne Dodge and Kevin Pritchard
joined staff Wendy and Frances on a Saturday morning, bagging groceries, speaking with
customers and thanking them for their donations. We received a cheque for $978.81 from this
wonderful event and that is a lot of DIMES!

The Minister of Community and Social Services
On July 7th, Minister of Community and Social
Services Dr. Helena Jaczek announced at a press
conference held at Butternut Lane $440,600 in
funding for Participation House for various
upgrades and repairs to our 3 Group Living Sites,
Butternut Lane, Farintosh House and Henderson
Group Home. The projects identified under the
Partner Facility Renewal Program is the Ministry’s
commitment to help hundreds of community
agencies provide better, more secure and
accessible facilities for the individuals that use our
services.

This investment by the Ministry is part of the “Build On” economic plan to build Ontario up and
deliver on its commitment to grow the economy and keep our people safe and secure. Thank you
to Premier Kathleen Wynne’s office for sending a videographer to make a short video regarding

What’s next for Participation House, Markham?
On July 27th, we were interviewed by Markham Board of Trade Committee
members for our Nomination for two potential Business Excellence Awards in the categories of
Accessibility and Community Relations. Finalists will be announced in October and a Gala Awards
evening in November will be held to present the winners of a number of awards for Business
Excellence in Markham. Please keep your fingers crossed!

On Tuesday, August 16th, we joined dozens of GTA East,
Scotiabank managers and staff for their annual Golf
Tournament at Wooden Sticks Golf Course in Uxbridge.
The proceeds will be split between Participation House,
Markham and 3 other charities. For over four years, we
have been honored by Scotiabank managers and staff
and have received over $40,000 proceeds to help the
Day Services and Adult Education Programs at Butternut
Lane. This year’s proceeds will be directed towards the
Build a Van Campaign.

2016 Annual Charity Golf Tournament
Participation House, Markham will celebrate its 24th Annual Golf Tournament event on
Thursday September 15, 2016 at the beautiful course at Sleepy Hollow Country Club in
Stouffville. Last year’s tournament raised over $36,000.00 towards our Gym and Day
Services Program which has been operating for over many years and continues to flourish
and provide much needed services to our residents. Residents participate in this
individualized program and continue to function at an improved level of mobility which
enables daily tasks such as eating, dressing and personal hygiene to be more manageable
for them. These achievements, along with the added dimension of social interaction
between staff and residents, continue to make a substantial difference in their daily lives.
This year’s goal is $ 40k with funds to support the Physical Exercise Program and the Build
a Van Campaign.

Our Fundraising Committee is excited to announce FashionAble 2017 which will take place at Le Parc on
June 6, 2017! We have launched our website and have set a goal of $ 75 K to purchase Shower Trolleys
for each house at 9 Butternut Lane, our main residence. Each Shower Trolley costs $ 8,971.00 and we
are looking to provide one for each of the five house pods at 9 Butternut Lane in Markham. You are
invited to help as a Volunteer, Supporter, Event Committee Member, and especially as one who works
on our behalf to help spread the news about this event to your family, friends and co-workers. For

As a family member or guardian of a resident at
Participation House, Markham, we wish to invite you to
become a member of the Cerebral Palsy Parent Council of
Toronto (CPPC). As a member, you will receive
newsletters with updates on our agency, invitations to all
of our special events and membership meetings where
you can learn more about our agency and contribute to
discussions on our operation. You will also be eligible to
attend our Annual General Meeting of the Corporation
and vote on issues concerning finance, fundraising,
programs, and much more.
