stories we have to tell about our people, plants and products and
since our Wellbeing Advisors have joined the team these stories
have tripled, as more of our customers share with their Advisor their
love of Weleda and all things truly natural.
However the constant challenge for us is
how we share all these stories with you! Well
I am thrilled to say that in this edition of the

with the Sidi Yassine women’s cooperative works in Morocco (page 9). In May
this year a group of us at Weleda Head Office, plus a team of 16 Wellbeing
Advisors, were fortunate to visit this cooperative and spend 5 days in the
town of Essaouira. This was a promotion for Wellbeing Advisors to learn and
experience more about Weleda’s commitment to putting people before profits.
It was a humbling and life-changing visit for us all as we met the women that
harvest the Argan Oil. Knowing that every Pomegranate facial care product
bought by one of our customers helps these women be financially independent
and improve their quality of life was a very special moment.

In September at the Annual Advisor Conference at Rudolf Steiner House in London
we will announce the 2017 trip to another Weleda project and we are expecting
twice as many Wellbeing Advisors to join us on the next stage of our journey!

About Weleda
Argan Oil
Weleda is a brand that's always been committed to putting people before profits and operating sustainably in harmony
with nature and the human being - that's why the partnership with the Sidi Yassine women's cooperative works so well.
They provide jobs to around 700 people, 99% of whom are Berber women and among the poorest in Morocco.
The positive effect has been empowering these women with a better wage and respect for their work.
Three things you should know about how
argan oil is made:
1. Argan trees are precious property but in decline
The argan tree is an ancient species, thought to date back millions of
years in this south-west region of Morocco. They survive dry and windy
conditions in the semi-desert-like terrain with their scruffy, rather
rugged looking appearance, their long root systems travel far through
the soil and limestone and seek out water, as well as anchoring them
firmly into the ground and even keep the desert at bay.
2. Producing argan oil is a long and labour intensive
process - It takes around 15 hours of labour to produce
2-2.5kgs of kernels for one litre of oil.
Extracting argan oil is time and labour intensive, which is why sourcing
fairtrade is important. With the rise in worldwide demand for the
ingredient, it's easy for large cooperations to overlook the hours it
takes to produce and bring prices down, which only really serves the
end multinational while the Berber women who do the work are likely
to get a raw deal. That's why the Sidi Yassine cooperative is so special.
Ulysses Müller is the founder and owner of the cooperative which
Weleda UK sources its 100% natural, fairtrade and organic argan oil
from. Ulysses, of Swiss origin, set up the company 12 years ago with
his Moroccan wife to create a product with high, international quality
under fairtrade and organic principles. Sidi Yassine is still the only
producer in the region with these credentials.
3. Argan is a super superfood
Argan has been used for centuries in Morocco as a beauty oil; a staple
for Berber women to treat skin conditions and now the key ingredient
in the Weleda Pomegranate facial care range, which helps to nourish
and firm maturing skin.

‘How can I find a truly natural fragrance?’
That’s definitely a Frequently Asked
Question. But having launched The
Perfume Society in 2014, a go-to
website and networking organisation
for fragrance-lovers, I know very well
that scents based purely on botanicals
are tantalisingly hard to find – and to
formulate.
Ingredients might come from flowers, fruits, leaves, roots and barks
– but each has an exquisite richness which is part of their charm.
An essential oil, in fact, may contain as many as 250 different
components with top notes, heart notes and base notes within the profile
of each individual oil. Dr Leo Zängerle, Head of the Weleda Fragrance
Development Centre adds that the elements – sun, wind, rain – can also
influence the success of a crop, and determine whether a particular
harvest is going to be a vintage year. How’s that for complexity?
It’s widely acknowledged that what’s hard to achieve in natural
perfumery is the longevity of, say, a classic French parfum. It’s
often synthetics which make for the ‘staying power’ on the skin.
But Weleda has created a new category for these airy naturals:
‘Eau Naturelle Parfumée’. Each of the Jardin de Vie fragrances is akin
to an Eau de Cologne strength, containing around 5% of the scented
oils within each bottle. Every ‘zhoosh!’ delivers an aromatherapeutic
benefit and has an impact on the sense of wellbeing. The fragrance
of a plant is the expression of the spirituality of nature: ‘Pure essential
oils are capable of touching the soul of a person very deeply’ says Leo
Zängerle. With the launch of Weleda’s Jardin de Vie triptych of scents,
I’m looking forward to giving an answer – with a smile – when a Beauty
Bible reader asks me: ‘How can I find a truly natural fragrance…?’
It’s no surprise to me that there’s a yearning for natural fragrances.
Botanical perfumery somehow makes the wearer feel more connected
with the earth and the seasons. But however glorious, in their natural
state, pure botanical essences present even the most accomplished
perfumer with challenges. For my book The Perfume Bible, I interviewed
renowned Californian ‘natural perfumer’ Mandy Aftel, who explained
that natural essences, unlike their synthetic counterparts, contain
minute trace elements which change their character – hence why
Moroccan rose smells different from Bulgarian rose or Egyptian rose.
Trying and wearing a natural fragrance
• Natural fragrances should be experienced on the skin rather than
smelled on a perfume blotter; they have a unique interaction with
body chemistry, blossoming on the skin and smelling subtly different on
every individual.

• Three is the optimum number of fragrances to sample on the skin at any
one time. Wait a minute or two before smelling your skin to gather the
initial impressions, and then smell again after 15 minutes – when the
heart notes will emerge – and again after an hour, when you’ll get an
idea of the base notes. That’ll give you a good reading of the evolution
of the perfume on your skin.

Dr Nina Watson is a clinical psychologist, massage therapist, mindfulness meditation teacher and Weleda
Wellbeing Advisor. She discovered mindfulness meditation was helpful working with staff and patients in the
NHS cancer services and very useful personally. She has practiced a lot, especially during the early hours when
waking through the night with small children.
Mindfulness meditation can help when demands are high and our reserves are low.
Dr Nina Watson, one of our Wellbeing Advisors, explains how we can weave in mindful practices into our everyday lives.
It is in our nature for our minds to wander. This is what minds do.
Many of us find we are living more in our heads, thinking about the past
and future and are not fully aware of what is happening here and now
in our lives. How can we slow down, just for a few moments and make
wise choices about looking after ourselves?
The essence of mindfulness is a compassionate acceptance of things
being as they are at this very moment. This is not easy. Things may not
be as we want them to be and it can be quite scary to feel the emotions
and physical sensations that are there when we slow down. This is
why many of us keep going, driven to keep occupied and avoid turning
towards painful thoughts, feelings and physical discomfort under the
surface. The trouble is, this can lead to exhaustion.
makes, hearing the sound of the water and feeling the sensation of
the water falling on your skin. If you wish, your focus can move to the
sensations of your breath flowing into and out of your body. Notice the
rise and fall of each breath, without changing it, let the breath breathe
itself. Maybe you are drawn to a particular body wash – notice the smell
and the feel of it.
You may need to do this again and again. This is the practice.
The aim is not to feel any different – just create the space to accept and
allow yourself to be exactly as you are, with gentleness, kindness and
compassion.
Mindfulness meditation encourages us to pause throughout the day.
This allows us to understand more about what is going on for us and
decide how to look after our own needs, along with the needs of others.
So, how do we weave mindful practices into our everyday life?
Mindfulness meditation in the shower
Having a shower can be a great mindful activity to choose, as this may
offer you a bit of uninterrupted privacy in a busy household. Say to
yourself: “Just for these few minutes there is nowhere for me to go,
nothing else I need to do. This is exactly where I need to be right now.
Whatever thoughts arise about things I need to sort out, I can come
back to them later, just not right now. Right now I will pay attention
to the experience of being in the shower for the next few minutes”.
All that is required is to pay attention to the experience of being in the
shower as it unfolds.
When stepping into the shower, you may already have a cascade of
thoughts. Whatever your thoughts, notice them, acknowledge them
and, without judging yourself, bring your attention back to the feel
of the water. Use all of your senses, looking at the pattern the water

Our gardeners are special folk. Their job is to nurture, ensuring the
plant itself and its environment is healthy. We use our own seed bank
as we believe this makes for plants most suited to our environment
here in Derbyshire. We use traditional farming methods as it makes
sense to rotate our growing beds annually and we combine wisdom
from our many seasons of gardening, creating active composts to feed
the soil from our own plant als; we make our own biodynamic garden
preparations from our natural materials which we spray in the Spring,
Summer, Autumn and Winter. Our aim is to grow the healthiest of
plants, always.

Homeopathy - where ‘like cures like’
We also manufacture Homeopathic remedies. Developed by Dr Samuel
Hahnemann in the 18th century, homeopathy also follows a holistic
approach to good health stimulating the body’s natural ability to cure
itself. Its guiding principle is to choose a remedy that would produce
similar symptoms to those you wish to treat, i.e. ‘like cures like’. Each
remedy is created by a series of dilution and shaking processes to
produce a minimum ‘potentised’ dose.
From plant to product...
From the moment our head gardener judges a plant to be ready we are
on countdown to harness its power. We harvest at specified times on
certain days of the year. Sometimes we harvest the root, sometimes
the flower, sometimes the whole plant. Our gardeners scrub-down and
gown-up to meet the stringent rules we work to in our pharmaceutical
laboratories. They harvest, clean, chop, grind and prepare the plant
material and they work with the production team to turn this into the
precious Mother Tinctures.

Caring for dry skin
Your skin can feel thin, tight and stretched, maybe it’s flaky or cracked around your nails or knuckles –
especially when we enter the colder season. We have no need to tell you what having dry skin means,
but Weleda can help you cope with it.
What to do about dry skin?
1. Find the cause
Does your skin react more strongly than usual to external stimuli, such as
synthetic ingredients in detergents or cosmetics? Do you notice redness,
rash or itching, especially after washing? If you can identify a cause – such
as a detergent, cosmetic product or fabric, eliminate it for six weeks and
see if your skin comes back into balance.
With so many factors potentially causing, or affecting your skin, it’s very
soon obvious that taking care of dry skin involves much more than just
putting on some moisturising cream. Here are a few helpful tips, which will
make a different to your skin comfort.
2. Customise your shower or bath regime
If you suffer from extremely dry skin that tends to eczema or psoriasis, we
recommend that you consult a dermatologist.
Frequent showering or bathing with hot water dries your skin out. Set
the temperature of your shower at maximum 37 degrees and try to keep
contact with the water as short as possible. Use natural, mild shower
creams containing detergents based on sugar and coconut, which don’t
attack the protective layer of your skin. Indulge your skin after showering
with a natural body lotion or body oil.
3. Choose customised facial care
The skin of your face needs extra attention, especially if it is dry. Opt for
mild, natural, care products with moisturising and nourishing plant oils. In
this way, the skin gets the nutrition it needs, but does not become charged
with potentially irritating substances, such as synthetic perfumes and
preservatives.
4. Nourish your skin from the inside
Drink up to two litres of water daily and eat plenty of protein and healthy
fats. Rich in helpful omega-3 fatty acids are beans, eggs, salmon, sardines
and mackerel. Try and get enough relaxation, exercise and sleep. And give
up smoking! That does wonders for your skin.
5. Protect yourself against bad weather
In cold or wild winter weather give additional protection to the face, lips
and hands. Hats, scarves and gloves should be supplemented by a natural
lip balm, weather protection cream and hand cream.
What is dry skin?
What are the causes of dry skin?
Dry skin is thin and tight, perhaps with flakes, lines or cracks, or it looks
‘frosty’ or red, especially when you’re out in harsh, cold weather. If it’s not
looked after it can get sore and broken, even infected.
Some causes are for example, the combination of soaps, bath and shower
gels with aggressive detergents and very hot water not only removes dirt,
but can also affect the acid mantle of our skin. After coming out of the
shower, water evaporates from the skin. Frequent showering or bathing
with hot water and chemical products is likely to exacerbate your dry skin.
Synthetic emollients (moisturisers) can also affect the acid mantle of your
skin, as can some perfume substances and preservatives. With the barrier
function unable to function properly, more moisture is lost and an even
drier skin can result.
Learning to live with dry skin starts with a closer look at how the skin
works. The skin forms the boundary between a human body, made of
60% water, and the ‘dry’ outside world, but because substances must be
excreted through our skin, it cannot be a hermetically sealed layer. As a
result, water vaporises into the air through the skin – but the skin has to
ensure that natural moisture loss is reduced to a minimum. To protect our
inner moisture, the epidermis is formed with a thick ‘cornified’ outer layer
(stratum corneum), rich in fatty proteins in a close-knit structure which
keeps moisture in and pathogens out. On top of it is the hydrolipid film,
or acid mantle, which is made of oily secretions and sits on the surface of
the skin.
With dry skin, the epidermis contains too much fat and holds too little
moisture, which makes it dry and scaly. The acid mantle may also be too
thin. Dry skin can be congenital (inherited or present from birth) but it can
also be caused by a variety of external factors. It can occur anywhere on
your body, from the scalp to the tips of your toes. Some people experience
only patches of dry skin, for example only on the face, while others get it
all over.

In cold temperatures, wind and dry air, your skin will get dried out even
more from the outside. During the winter you can feel your skin suffering.
But on the other hand, too much sunlight can also dry the skin – although
some sunlight is important for the production of vitamin D, which is lacking
in much of the UK population. Try not to over-indulge in the sun when the
weather does turn fine, or when you are on holiday.
The age you’re at plays a role too. As you get older, hormone changes mean
your skin becomes drier. It’s a natural process which we often start to notice
most during and after menopause. That’s when oestrogen decreases and
many women notice that their skin feels much drier.

In the Weleda garden we move quickly to make sure all essential jobs are
complete before the first frosts. The grass will get the last mow of the
year and hedge cutting must be finished. Any seeds and berries we need
for propagation must be carefully gathered. We split our own garlic bulbs
into cloves and set them into a fresh patch of soil. Now is the time for the
last turn of the compost heaps and the last top dressing over perennial
herbs, putting them to bed for the winter. Wilder parts of the field we
leave alone to provide food for birds, and safe haven for hibernating
animals and insects.

It’s time to get the tractor onto one of the bigger fields, ploughing the
earth before it becomes too wet – a heavy vehicle on wet earth would
compress the land too much, and that would be bad for the structure
and life of the soil. We grow all of our crops on a strict rotation system to
discourage the build-up of pests and diseases. Once ploughed, the whole
field is left to itself, to weather over winter. Next summer, this area will
bloom with sunny calendula blossom.
Intensive Care for Hands, Feet, Lips and Body
Once every area of soil has received the attention it needs, we apply
biodynamic barrel preparation everywhere, to help the earth digest
manure and compost. This is Weleda’s special helping hand to nature, as
she breaks down organic matter.
Hair Care
Big bits of branch and thick, woody trimmings from plants need to be
chipped or shredded. This will be used to mulch and renew pathways
around our gardens. We use this method rather than burning, so that
carbon stays on, or in, the ground instead of releasing it into the
atmosphere.

The Biodynamic Conference usually happens around now too, recharging
us with new inspiration and helping us to regain focus on what we are
doing and why. From colleagues in the same world we learn how we
can improve the ways in which we work. There’s also a sad day when
our seasonal gardener finishes their season’s work with us. Each year
our gardening team is enriched and supported by a new person, who
will have worked incredibly hard with us over the summer and become
a garden buddy. It’s the moment when we know the winter is upon us,
when we say a final goodbye to the summer and turn towards the short
days of winter.

As the leaves start to fall and the soft autumn sun dips lower in the sky,
oblique beams of light catch the golden leaves and everything around us
starts to glow. When October rain comes it settles in for longer, the wind
