EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN MAY 2012: FINAL programme
Dear Colleague,
It is a pleasure to welcome you to one of the most beautiful towns in Europe! Thanks to its well-preserved medieval
townscape, the Old Town of Bern was entered onto UNESCO’s listing of World Heritage Sites in 1983. With its 140,000
inhabitants, Bern is rather small, but if you have some spare time, a visit of the old centre is highly recommended.
There you will find the Clock Tower (Zytglogge), formerly Bern’s first western city gate (1191-1256), now one of Bern’s
most important sights. The Cathedral (Münster) is Bern’s most impressive example of Late Gothic architecture and the
basilica with its three naves rises above Bern’s Old Town and the river Aare. Were you aware that Albert Einstein lived
in Bern from 1903 to 1905 and developed his Theory of Relativity here? The Einstein House gives visitors a chance
to see where the great physicist completely revolutionised our understanding of space and time. Finally, if you are
accompanied by your family, do not miss visiting the Bear Park, a special experience for children as well as adults.
Besides visiting Bern, do not forget to join us for CoBaSymposium & Workshop 2012! Well known experts in the field of
medical training and teaching will contribute to this event, organised by ESICM’s CoBaFaculty. The aim is to promote
educational activities and to foster relationships with national training organisations and national societies. The
target audience includes representatives of national training organisations, experts in training and teaching in care of
the critically ill, trainees, and other stakeholders in the field of medical training and teaching. The programme includes
a mixture of lectures provided by top-level speakers, and workshops where input from all participants is expected.
Active contribution from all participants is crucial in leading further developments of the CoBaTrICE programme!
As a complement to CoBaSymposium & Workshop 2012, ESICM’s Clinical Training Committee has organised two
advanced clinical training courses: “ICU Management” and “Haemodynamic Monitoring and Management”. Here a high
level of interaction will be assured through a mixture of case based discussions in small groups, workshops, plenary
lectures, and a comprehensive course workbook.
Wellcome to Bern!

Zunft zu Webern is one of the old guild houses of Bern.
“Webern” relates to the weavers, a guild mentioned already
in 1373 as an association of craftsmen. The guild of weavers
did not only include weavers, but also fullings, clothiers,
dippers and hatters. In 1911, the guild moved to the actual
house at Gerechtigkeitsgasse 68, an old bernese property with
a restaurant. Having a restaurant has always been important
to this guild and today the well-known restaurant Zunft zu
Webern is still located in this time-honoured house.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN MAY 2012: FINAL programme
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The main goal of CoBaSymposium & Workshop 2012 is to
support the further development and implementation of a
standardised, well structured postgraduate training programme
in intensive care medicine throughout Europe.
The main goal of the advanced clinical training courses
(ACTIC) is to provide trainees in Intensive Care Medicine with
a series of high quality educational training opportunities.
ESICM primarily dedicates itself to develop and run instructor
and provider courses in close cooperation with the National
Societies of Intensive Care Medicine. In the future, such
courses shall operate at the national level, with minimal
oversight from ESICM.
Further details for each of these modules are given below.
CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION / EACCME
This Education and Training Track is accredited by the European
Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education
