GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Le Sueur soils have slightly concave, plane, or slightly convex slopes on moraines within the Des Moines lobe and Grantsburg sublobe of the Late Wisconsin glaciation. They formed in a calcareous, loamy till. Slopes range from 1 to 3 percent. Mean annual air temperature ranges from 45 to 52 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 25 to 32 inches. Soil Descriptions GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: The main ones are the Cordova, Lester, and Hamel soils. These soils formed in materials similar to the Le Sueur soils and are members of a hydrosequence with the Le Sueur soils. The poorly drained Cordova and Hamel soils are common associates on adjacent nearly level slopes. The well drained Lester soils are the most common associate on the undulating to gently undulating slopes. The well drained Hayden soils and the poorly drained Dundas soils are associates in some places. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well drained. Surface runoff is slow. Permeability is moderate. An apparent water table is at 2.5 to 4 feet during November to June in most years. KILKENNY SERIES - Soil # L41C2 Complex, L40B Complex The Kilkenny series consists of very deep, moderately well drained soils that formed in a mantle of clayey glacial till or flow till and underlying loamy glacial till on moraines. These soils have moderately slow permeability. Their slopes range from 2 to 35 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 28 inches. Mean annual temperature is about 48 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Kilkenny loam with a 15 percent linear sideslope on a glacial moraine in a pastured field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Kilkenny soils have plane and convex slopes on gently sloping to steep end moraines of the Des Moines lobe of the Late Wisconsinan glaciation. Their slopes range from 2 to 35 percent. They formed in a mantle of clayey glacial till or flow till and underlying loamy glacial till on moraines. Mean annual temperature ranges from 45 to 52 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation is about 25 to 32 inches. Frost-free days range from 145 to 175. Elevation above sea level ranges from 800 to 1500 feet. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Glencoe, Lerdal, Lester, Le Sueur, Lura, Mazaska, and Shields series. The very poorly drained Glencoe and Lura soils are in the lower lying drainageways and depressions. The somewhat poorly drained Lerdal soils are on gently sloping to moderately steep areas. Shields soils are poorly drained, and are on slightly elevated flats. Mazaska soils are poorly drained, and are on slightly elevated flats and swales above or within areas of Kilkenny soils. Also, the well drained Lester soils and the moderately well drained Le Sueur soils are associated in a few areas. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well drained. Permeability is moderately slow. Runoff is medium or rapid. A perched seasonal high water table occurs at depths of 2.5 to 3.5 feet during the period November to June in most years. GLENCOE SERIES - Soil # L84A The Glencoe series consists of very deep, very poorly drained soils that formed in loamy sediments from glacial till on glacial moraines. These soils have moderate or moderately slow permeability. Slopes are 0 to 1 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 28 inches. Mean annual temperature is about 48 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Glencoe clay loam with a concave slope of less than 1 percent in a depression on a ground moraine in cultivated field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Glencoe soils typically are in closed depressions or low gradient swales within the Des Moines lobe of the Late Wisconsinan glaciation. The Glencoe soils are formed in loamy alluvial sediments and loamy glacial till. Mean annual temperature ranges from 45 to 52 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 25 to 32 inches. The frost free days range from 124 to 172. The elevation above sea level range from 700 to 1600 feet. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Canisteo, Clarion, Harps, Nicollet, and Webster soils. The well drained Clarion soils are on the sloping uplands. Somewhat poorly drained Nicollet and the poorly drained Canisteo, Webster, and Harps soils are on nearly level to gently undulating slopes. All the above have mollic epipedons less than 24 inches thick. In addition, the Canisteo and Harps soils contain free carbonates throughout. The Glencoe soils also are associated with the Hayden and Lester soils and their respective topographic associates in some places. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Very poorly drained. Surface runoff is very slow or ponded. Permeability is moderate or moderately slow. CORDOVA SERIES - Soil # L81A The Cordova series consists of very deep, poorly drained soils that formed mostly in loamy calcareous glacial till on ground moraines and till plains. The upper part of the solum in some of these soils formed in modified glacial till. These soils have moderately slow permeability. Their slopes are less than 2 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 28 inches. Mean annual temperature is about 48 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Cordova silty clay loam with a plane slope of less than 1/2 percent on a glacial till plain in a deciduous forest. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Cordova soils have slightly concave to slightly convex slopes on broad flat ridge tops in rolling moraine areas or on lower lying areas in ground moraines and till plains. Slope gradients are 0 to 2 percent. Soils formed mostly in friable, calcareous, loamy till of Late Wisconsinan age. However, the upper part of the sola in some pedons is from modified glacial till or drift. The mean annual temperature is about 45 to 52 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation is about 26 to 32 inches. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: The main ones are the Dundas, Lester, and Le Sueur soils. These soils formed in materials similar to those of the Cordova soils and are members of a hydrosequence with the Cordova soils. The well drained Lester soils are on nearby undulating to hilly slopes. The moderately well to somewhat poorly drained Le Sueur and the somewhat poorly to poorly drained Dundas soils are on nearby higher positions. The poorly drained Webster and Hamel soils and the very poorly drained Glencoe soils are a nearby associate in a few places. Soil Descriptions DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained. Surface runoff is slow. Permeability is moderately slow. ANGUS SERIES - Soil # L40B The Angus series consists of very deep, well drained soils formed in calcareous loamy glacial till on moraines and till plains. Permeability is moderate. Slopes range from 2 to 5 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 28 inches. Mean annual air temperature is about 46 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Angus loam with a convex slope of about 5 percent on a ground moraine in a cultivated field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: These soils have convex slopes on moraines or till plains. Slopes range from 2 to 5 percent. They formed in calcareous, loamy glacial till of late Wisconsin Age. Mean annual air temperature ranges from 45 to 50 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 25 to 32 inches. Frost-free days range from 125 to 165. Elevation above sea level ranges from 700 to 1600 feet. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These includes the Cordova, Dundas, Glencoe, Hamel, Houghton, Klossner, and Le Sueur soils which formed in similar parent materials. A seasonal high apparent water table is at 3.5 to 6 feet during March to June in most years. TERRIL SERIES - Soil # L129B The Terril series consists of very deep, moderately well drained, moderately permeable soils formed in loamy local colluvium/alluvium on foot slopes, alluvial fans, and stream terraces of till plains. Slope ranges from 0 to 25 percent. Mean annual air temperature is about 49 degrees F., and mean annual precipitation is about 30 inches. TYPICAL PEDON: Terril loam on a foot slope of about 4 percent in a cropped field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Terril soils are on nearly plane to slightly concave foot slopes, toeslopes, alluvial fans and swales, typically elongate in shape. Slope gradients are mostly between 1 and 9 percent, but some are as much as 25 percent. The soils formed in loamy local colluvium/alluvium derived from glacial till of mixed mineralogy. Mean annual air temperature ranges from 45 to 52 degrees F., and mean annual precipitation is 23 to 34 inches. Annual frost free days are 145 to 180 days. Elevation ranges from 1050 to 1450 feet above mean sea level. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: Associated soils on till plain upland areas are commonly the Clarion, Kenyon, Lester, Ostrander, Storden and Ves series. The Colo and Delft soils are the common associate on lower slopes. Others are the Biscay, Cylinder, Lawler, Marshan, Wadena, and Zook soils. Biscay, Cylinder, Lawler, Marshan, and Wadena soils have coarse textures in the lower part of the series control section. Colo, Delft and Zook soils are poorly drained. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well drained. Surface runoff is medium. Permeability is moderate. Soil saturation is recognized at depths of 3.5 to 6 feet during March to June in most years in the moderately wet phase. RIDGETON SERIES - Soil # L110E Complex The Ridgeton series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils formed in loamy local colluvium which may overlay glacial till on backslopes and footslopes on moraines or non-glaciated uplands. Slope ranges from 6 to 45 percent. Mean annual air temperature is about 49 degrees F., and mean annual precipitation is about 30 inches TYPICAL PEDON: Ridgeton loam on a foot slope of about 7 percent in a cropped field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Ridgeton soils are on concave foot slopes and linear backslopes. Slope gradients are between 6 and 45 percent. The soils formed in loamy local colluvium and may have glacial till of mixed mineralogy in MLRA-104 and 104. Mean annual air temperature ranges from 45 to 52 degrees F., and mean annual precipitation is 23 to 34 inches. Annual frost free days are 145 to 180 days. Elevation ranges from 1050 to 1450 feet above mean sea level. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: Associated soils are commonly the Clarion, Delft, Hamel, Lester, Omsrud, Swanlake, Storden and Terril soils. Clarion, Lester, Omsrud, Swanlake, and Storden soils formed entirely in glacial till and have thinner A horizons. The Delft, Hamel, and Terril soils are common associates on lower, concave slopes. Delft and Hamel soils are poorly and somewhat poorly drained. Terril soils are moderately well drained. In MLRA-105 associated soils include various loamy mantled soils, typically with bedrock at depths of 10 to 60 inches. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Surface runoff is medium to high. Permeability is moderate. Soil Descriptions MUSKEGO SERIES - Soil # L93A, L16A The Muskego series consists of very deep, very poorly drained soils formed in herbaceous organic material over coprogenous limnic material (sedimentary peat) on glacial lake plains and flood plains. They have moderately slow to moderately rapid permeability in the organic material, and moderate or moderately slow permeability in the loamy material. Slopes range from 0 to 8 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 28 inches. Mean annual temperature is about 47 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Klossner muck - with a 1 percent slope in a cultivated field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Klossner soils are in basins that were formerly lakes or ponds, lake plains, till plains, flood plains, outwash plains, or moraines. They are also on hillside seep areas in moraines and sideslopes of river valleys. Slopes range from 0 to 8 percent. The soils on nearby uplands are generally loamy. The mean annual temperature ranges from 45 to 50 degrees F. The mean annual precipitation ranges from 24 to 32 inches. Frost free days range from 110 to 160. Elevations above sea level range from 800 to 1400 feet. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: The main ones are the Canisteo, Harps, Okoboji, Glencoe, Muskego and Houghton soils.
