Proposal for a New Edmonton JCC
In the October 2014 edition of the Edmonton Jewish News there is a four page spread outlining a
proposal for a new Jewish Community Centre, referred to as the WEJCC (West Edmonton JCC).
The vision is that new young leadership will run and operate this community facility that will attract
families now and into the future.
The business model outlined shows the new WEJCC would generate profit to pay for its overhead.
A new association called WEJCC (2014) would be responsible for the construction, operation and
staffing.
The location chosen - adjacent to the existing Talmud Torah School, “guarantees exposure for profit
centers including a kosher café, an indoor play park, an outdoor roller hockey rink, yoga & dance
studios and a birthday party centre”.
The article stresses that ALL PROCEEDS from the 2011 sale of the 156 Street JCC location will be
used to create this new facility.
And through the new WEJCC, the Talmud Torah school will have access to a kosher lunch program.

Green Bean Beet and Pistachio Salad

eets are an important part of the Jewish
diet. They’re mentioned in Yiddish
literature dating back to the Middle
Ages. For centuries Ashkenazi Jews
have used beets to make borscht, a bright red
sweet-and-sour soup, as well as pickles, ground
horseradish and preserves. Moroccan Sephardic
Jews enjoy them in salads and mezze. To show
INGREDIENTS
1 lb. young green beans, trimmed
1 1/2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup pistachios
2 tbsp fresh chopped dill
1 lb. roasted peeled beets (about 1 1/2 lbs. fresh beets
before roasting), cut into bite-sized wedges
1 tbsp date honey syrup or regular honey
HOW TO ROAST THE BEETS:
Place a rack in the center of your oven and preheat the oven to
450 degrees F. Line a 9x13 baking dish with foil.
As the oven is heating up, prep your beets for roasting. Use
kitchen shears to trim leaves and upper stems of the beets,
leaving about 2 inches of the stems intact at the top of each
beet. Do not trim the tails of the beets; if you do, you’ll lose
precious juicy flavor that will drizzle out of the trimmed tails
during roasting. Gently scrub the beets clean and pat dry. You
want to get the dirt off of them, but you don't want to scrub the
skin off-- it will help to hold the juices in while the beets roast.

Beets have a lot of pigment, which tends to stain anything and
everything it comes into contact with, including your hands.
Some cooks recommend scrubbing the beets gently with a
kitchen towel to remove the skin (make sure it’s a towel you
don’t mind staining red). Others use paper towels or plastic
gloves to protect the hands. I’ve tried using gloves, but they
make gripping the thin slippery skin more difficult. I prefer simply
removing the skin with my bare fingers under cold running water;
the skin slides off easily this way, and the red beet juice comes
off of my hands with a few soap-and-water washes. For stubborn
skin stains, I apply a little lemon juice. You might want to wear
an apron when peeling your beets, to protect your clothes from
stray beet juice droplets. If your fingers get a little stained, don't
fret-- it will wear off in a day or two.
By the end of this process, you will have some beautifully
roasted beets!
MAKE THE SALAD:
While the beets are roasting, you can prepare the green
beans. In a mixing bowl, toss the green beans with the
olive oil, salt and pepper to taste.

beets are more tender and take less time to roast, while larger
beets take longer. Start checking your beets for doneness at 45
minutes by piercing the largest beet in the bunch with a wooden
skewer. If the skewer easily and smoothly glides through the
center of the beet, they’re ready. If not, roast another 10 minutes
and test again. Continue to test until they're ready.
After cooking, uncover the beets and allow to cool for 5-10
minutes till you can easily handle them. Cut off the beet stems
and tails.
Peel the skin from the beets while they are still warm. There are
many different ways to peel a beet, and all of them are messy.
Toast the pistachios in a small skillet over medium heat
until lightly toasted and fragrant.
Toss cooked green beans with the pistachios and 1 1/2
tbsp fresh dill, then transfer to your serving dish.
Sprinkle the beetroot wedges lightly with salt and then
arrange them amongst the green beans. Sprinkle the
remaining 1/2 tbsp dill over the top of the salad.
Drizzle the top of the salad with 1 tbsp date honey syrup or
regular honey. Serve at room temperature.

5 million Polish-Jewish records database is key resource for Attorney
Alan Dershowitz, singer Carole King and playwright Tony Kushner

Finding Your Roots.”
The ancestral search in the forthcoming November 4 th episode of PBS’s
documentary series “Finding Your Roots,” might not have happened if
not for Jewish Records Indexing – Poland (www.jri-poland.org).
This episode features three notable Americans, renowned attorney Alan
Dershowitz, Grammy Award winning singer / songwriter Carole King
and Pulitzer Prize winning playwright and screen writer Tony Kushner.
All three have deep roots in Poland
The Dershowitz/King/Kushner story is part of the current 10-part series
of Finding Your Roots with host Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates
Jr. In it, Professor Gates continues the quest he began in African
American Lives 1 and 2 and Faces of America delving into the
genealogy and genetics of a group of famous Americans. The series
combines history and science in a fascinating exploration of race,
family, and identity in today's America. Each hour features celebrity
guests, who are bound together by an intimate, sometimes hidden link,
whether it be as old friends, through long-lost relatives, or even through
a common ancestral past.
The episode’s researchers were able to tap into JRI-Poland’s online
database as both the starting point and a major source for documenting
the ancestry of all three of the featured personalities. Finding Your
Roots director / producer, Josh Gleason commented:
J"RI Poland was a tremendous resource as we worked to uncover the
Eastern European ancestry of our Jewish guests. This organization's
work in indexing and digitizing thousands of records led us on a paper
trail going back to the 18th century! We were able to provide our
guests with information about their 3rd and 4th great-grandparents
that would have been virtually impossible to uncover without this
resource. JRI-Poland's database is truly a gift to family historians and
genealogists around the world."
Founded in 1995, JRI-Poland was an outgrowth of Montrealer Stanley
Diamond's need for access to Jewish vital records of the former Lomza
Gubernia area of Poland for research into his family’s genetic history.
Diamond is Executive Director and the organization has a global board,
and hundreds of volunteers serving thousands of researchers, funded by
groups and genealogists around the world.

Poland, and more. This vast database of records going back to the late
18th century dramatically refutes the misleading notion that all the
Jewish records of Poland were destroyed in World War II.
The JRI-Poland database is not only the main resource for family
historians tracing their roots to Poland, but is also one of the key
sources of records for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
(Washington), Yad Vashem (Jerusalem), the Jewish Historical Institute
(Warsaw) and other institutions and organizations seeking to help
Holocaust survivors find information about their families and who live
with a never-ending hope of re-connecting with cousins they knew and
previously unknown relatives.
JRI-Poland has been recognized by the medical and scientific
communities for the potential benefit for Ashkenazic families trying to
trace medical histories, particularly those at increased risk for hereditary
conditions and diseases. As a result of statistical analyses indicating a
high incidence of medical and genetic abnormalities in individuals of
Polish-Jewish descent, JRI - Poland is creating a finding aid for those
who may need answers to medical-related questions or require bone
marrow or other transplants. Because of this, JRI-Poland has received
commendations from the Gift of Life Foundation and the National
Marrow Donor Program.
