during the Labor Day weekend, because you are
going to be busy! Area church fund raising festivals are

two months. Try to put your autumn yard work aside
and the fall cleaning on hold to enjoy the events in your
community.
But, don’t get too worn out socializing! The Pilot Grove
Savings Bank Heritage Club has some new and special
activities of its own lined up for you this fall. So while
the days are still somewhat long and the weather
favorable for travel, consider joining us for any and all
of the season’s coming events.

Newsletter is produced every other month. If you

decaf coffee, juice or cider served upon our arrival.

Join our celebration as we welcome Ned Francis, an
artist, songwriter, multi instrumentalist, producer, and
performer of the highest caliber. Ned has independently
released multiple albums on his own label and has sold
them for 15 years at his shows. Based in Southeast Iowa,
he tours regionally over 200 nights a year and has
established a solid fan base in three states as a solo
artist.
As a founding member of the Iowa band, The Ozone
Ramblers, Ned was signed as an artist on RCA Records,
Mexico, and toured internationally. He has written
hundreds of songs in many different musical styles and
has his own recording studio at his home in Iowa.
Following Ned’s performance, we will play a few
rounds of BINGO, award prize money for each win, and
then serve a light lunch with anniversary cake. No
reservations needed! Plan to attend and bring a friend!
A
n elderly couple had dinner with friends one evening.
After eating, the wives left the table and went into the
kitchen. The two gentlemen were talking, and one said to the
other, "Last night we went out to a new restaurant and it was
really great. I would highly recommend it.”
The other man said, "What is the name of the restaurant?"
The first man thought and thought and finally said, "What is
the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You
know... the one that's red and has thorns."
"Do you mean a rose?"
"Yes, that's the one," replied the man.
He then turned towards the kitchen and yelled, "Rose, what's
the name of that restaurant we went to last night?"

We recently added The National WWII Museum in New

Looking for alternatives to CDs?
Try considering these options.
If you’re looking for alternatives to CDs, try considering these
often over looked fixed income alternatives as a way to capture
additional yield without reaching too far to get it.
Municipal bonds are attractive alternatives right now with Iowa
issues yielding around 0.70% for a 2-year maturity and a 1.70%
for a 5-year maturity. Municipal bond income is generally free
from federal and state taxes for residents of the issuing state. So,
a true yield of 0.70% now becomes a taxable equivalent yield of
.93% for someone in the 25% tax bracket. The higher the tax
rate a person is subject to, the more beneficial tax free income
becomes. To calculate one’s individual benefit, simply divide
the tax free municipal yield by (1- investor’s tax rate).
Another perk to municipals’ tax exempt interest treatment is
their very low historical default rates. Over the last 10 years,
cumulative default rate on municipal issues rated “A” and above
was only 0.04%.
Other alternatives that offer possibly more security, help capture
interest rate increases, and help minimize price volatility, are
government agency floating rate and step-up bonds. Floating
rate bonds adjust their coupon periodically with a market index,
such as the 3-month treasury yield, where as step-ups have
predetermined rising coupon structure. Be aware that some bond
issues may have undesirable call features that might prevent the
buyer from receiving the full series of the higher coupon levels.
It appears as the bull market in bonds is winding down, those
with fixed income investments may want to consider reexamining how their portfolio is positioned. What worked when
rates were declining may not be the best investment to hold
when rates are increasing.

Holiday Tradition.
Set in the 1940's in the fictional town of Homan,
Indiana, this musical follows 9-year-old Ralphie

Christmas gifts - an official Red Ryder CarineAction 200 Shot Range Model Air Rifle!
Rebuffed at every turn with a similar echoing
response, Ralphie plots numerous schemes to
achieve his desperate desire for the coveted BB
gun. All the iconic scenes from the movie are

Christmas dinner and many others!

Have you read the latest article in
“Our Iowa” magazine about a lady
and her “bucket list?” It made me
start thinking about things I want to
do and places we ought to visit with
the Heritage Club.
Pilot Grove Savings Bank
Heritage Club
2013 Calendar of Events*
So far, we’ve been very fortunate to empty a few things out
of the bucket. We’ve traveled to Alaska, Hawaii, Europe, and
many different areas of the United States. We’ve gone to
Broadway Shows, cheered at major league baseball games,
and discovered our own State of Iowa.
Maybe we all need a bucket list - something to plan for and
look forward to. It needn’t be a big list, or even a travel list. It
could be as simple as joining a card club, taking a morning
walk or having coffee with your neighbor. Of course, at the
top of the list could be attending the monthly Heritage Club
Activity Days!
Club members have been busy traveling this summer working
on the “bucket list”. Our trip to Michigan started in Holland
with a dinner cruise on Lake Macatawa. We rode the ferry to
historic Mackinac Island, where we took carriage rides, ate
lunch at the Grand Hotel, stayed at Bicycle Inn, visited shops
and restaurants, and traveled home along the scenic shores
of Michigan. It is definitely a destination that will stay on our
bucket list!
A large number of travelers joined us for the outstanding
performance of “Menopause” at Circa’ 21. We all laughed and
clapped along to this musical parody set to songs such as
“Puff the Magic Dragon” and “Stayin’ Alive”.
Our Chicago trip was a baseball success. Both teams won! We
sat at Wrigley and watched the Cubs beat the Cardinals, and
then listened to the Cardinals beat the Cubs the next day on
the way home. All fans went home happy! On Saturday we all
took off on a wide variety of adventures; trolley tours, boat
tours, and visits to the Shed Aquarium and Field Museum. A
couple even went to a casino! Throughout the day we could
look to the sky and see parts of the Chicago Air Show.
Do you have a bucket list or plan to start one? There’s room
in our bucket for your list. Give me a call soon! I would love to
hear from you!
