Greetings GRCCNY members, as a Golden Volunteer for the Morris Animal Foundation’s Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, I wanted to take a moment to remind all of our breeders, we have a golden opportunity to improve our breed. Help Morris Animal Foundation eliminate cancer in our beloved breed. Please encourage your puppy buyers to join 3,000 Golden Retriever owners who are enrolling their dogs in the most important observational study ever undertaken to improve canine health. Why Should You Get Involved? This study will identify genetic, environmental and nutritional risk factors for cancer and other health problems that affect Golden Retrievers. Puppies from the same lines are extremely valuable. Data collected from littermates that experience different environmental factors and diets may provide unique scientific insights that could make a significant impact on the long-term health of Golden Retrievers. Your participation will improve the health of future generations of Golden Retrievers and will help create a brighter, healthier future for all dogs. Visit: www.caninelifetimehealth.org/for-golden-retriever-breeders/ for more information and downloads of letters to give your puppy owners. By Maxine Clark In 1995 as a fairly new Golden owner I joined GRCCNY. I immediately made new friends that shared the love of this breed. After belonging to other clubs whose members argued and were constantly in competition of each other I found GRCCNY to be a breath of fresh air. They say that people pick a breed that most represent themselves and I found that to be true. The Golden is to have a ‘kind’ expression and I have found that also in our members. The Golden is a versatile breed and so is GRCCNY. We have members that do Conformation, all performance venues, pet owners and many active in rescue, which we support. The only requirement is a love of the Golden Retriever. The fact that we all see the Golden Retriever a little differently in purpose only adds to our versatility and has never taken away from our support of each other. We have breeder/members that breed for Conformation, Performance and Field that actually get along. Probably because we are all breeding with purpose and striving to produce a better dog. As clubs go we have a lot to be proud of. We have dogs that have added CH, OTCH ,and MACH before their names and dogs that have added *** Qual-all age, MH, WCX, and many other titles after their name. We have those in our midst that have earned over 30 AKC titles on one dog and are still going. We have four CGC evaluators, one AKC licensed breed judge, three AKC licensed hunt test judges, one AKC licensed obedience/rally judge and one AKC licensed agility judge. And what other club has a member that makes our title plaques and does back-flips when he hands them out, all this while shaking pom-poms ? Every year we do a Specialty and every other year a CCA. We hold our annual WC/WCX, a Super Singles competition, a beginner’s field seminar, an eye clinic, and we have a puppy referral second to none. The hours spent not only referring our breeders but educating the clueless puppy buyer are mind boggling. And how about the fact that we amended our by-laws to include public education? Feeling that each member is an “ambassador” for the breed who is often approached by a stranger because of a bumper sticker, T-shirt or what is at the end of our leash we know that this is the public that needs to be informed and to know that a breed club exits where they can turn to for information about the breed. What a wealth of knowledge in such a small club. Add to that the demo’s we are now adding to the beginning of each meeting. What a “bang for your buck” plus evenings spent enjoying everything Golden. As a breed club I give us an A+ and am very happy to belong to such a diverse club. From time to time we’re asked, “If rescue programs call themselves ‘Golden Retriever Rescue,’ why do they accept anything but purebred Golden Retrievers?” And, “There should be a rule about that.” In establishing any rule, one needs to ask who makes the rule and who enforces it. There is a very basic reality of Golden Retriever Rescue programs and their relationship with GRCA: while enjoying the support and warm encouragement of GRCA through its officers and elected representatives, rescue programs are not member clubs and receive no GRCA funds. The rescue programs, currently numbering 98, are locally formed and administered, and 95 percent of fundraising is local. All but two are incorporated as a nonprofit corporation in the state in which they operate and have IRS charitable group status of 501(c)3. They are independent and, as such, have the ability to determine their own policies. There are, however, certain “standards of participation” if a program desires affiliation with GRCA’s National Rescue Committee (NRC) and the accompanying benefits of being listed on NRC’s website as a service to the public and to determine eligibility for grants from the Golden Retriever Foundation. These “standards” have to do with care of the dogs accepted, providing necessary veterinary care, spay/neuter, evaluation of behavior and temperament, full disclosure of all known information to potential adopters, and accepting the dog back if the adoption contract cannot be fulfilled. Some programs accept only purebred Golden Retrievers. Others accept dogs that are crosses between Goldens and other breeds or of unknown heritage. But the decision to accept other than a purebred Goldens has several components: • Are purebred Goldens brought to the program’s attention accepted and cared for first? • Does the program have the resources to care for the dog? • Does the program have adoption applicants willing to accept other than a purebred? • Does the dog have the temperament that program staff and volunteers as well as adopters expect and want of a Golden? There are other considerations. The full genetic heritage of the dog cannot be accurately determined by appearance alone. It is estimated that 15 years ago 60 percent of dogs accepted by Golden Retriever rescue programs came with AKC registrations; today under 10 percent are AKC registered. But even with those registrations, the differences in appearance are considerable and this will not be news to fanciers. Further, the differences in appearance between a Golden crossed with another or unknown breed and a poorly bred purebred can be very small indeed. Many rescuers including myself have used “close enough” in considering a dog for acceptance as well as “not close enough.” Our survey data that is published each year in the Golden Retriever News suggests a number of mixes and that number is inflated by errors in “categorizations” and by accepting what shelters label as mixes. Increasingly shelters avoid the purebred term and use major breed/mix in the attempt to avoid the purebred/mix disagreements. Other dogs in the “mix category” are also the offspring of a purebred females accepted after being impregnated. Those puppies are cared for and placed by the program and are counted as mixes unless there is good visual evidence that both sire and dam were purebred Goldens. Our published data also shows “Other dogs” and that should be explained. There are programs in our “network” that are known to be All-Breed or All-Retriever programs but because of the number of Goldens they do accept and rehome, they are a part of our network, and we see no philosophical issue with this. Also reflected in the “other dog” figure are dogs that come into our programs and are bonded to a Golden Retriever also accepted. Rather than traumatically separate these pairs, they are accepted and placed together. I hope that this explains GRCA’s and its NRC’s position on this topic. Important to note, however, is the position of the Golden Retriever Foundation on this topic. There are now three GRF funds that assist and support rescue and I unequivocally state that 99 percent of the money distributed from those funds goes to the care of purebred Golden Retrievers. I say 99 percent instead of 100 percent only because I cannot prove to an absolute certainty that this is the case. If it is the personal value of donors to the Golden Retriever Foundation that their donations go strictly to the care of purebred Goldens, then it is my belief that the standard is met. Breed loyalty is extremely high among rescuers of Golden Retrievers. I know of no person with more loyalty to this breed than the person who cares for someone else’s Golden, without expectation of gain other than satisfaction, until that dog goes home. That, I believe, earns that rescuer access to a seat at the GRCA figurative “table.” I am pleased to have this opportunity to provide this information to the GRCA membership. ❖ E Golden Retriever Club of Central New York Inc.
