臺灣科技大學電資學院印尼訪問暨招生成果報告 (Achievement Report on the Visitation Panel of the CEECS to Indonesia Universities) (Visited Schools) University of Indonesia Bandung Institute of Technology Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology 訪問期間 (Visitation Period) 20010/10/3~2010/10/10 1 Visit to UI, Jakarta October 3, 2010 Prof. Jiann-Liang Chen(EECS vice dean), Prof. Poki Chen(ET), Prof. Kai-Lung Hua(CS), and Prof. Kuo-Lung Lian(EE) took EVA BR237 from Taipei, Taiwan at 9AM and arrived Jakarta, Indonesia at 13:10PM. We took a van in front of the airport to our hotel GrandKemang (http://www.grandkemang.com). We were planning to stay in another hotel, ”Bumi Wiyata Hotel” (http://www.hotelbumiwiyata.com/index.php), which is located very close to the campus of University of Indonesia. However when we tried to make the reservation for Bumi Wiyata Hotel, all the rooms are fully booked and hence we chose hotel GrandKemang as suggested from UI staff. Visit to University of Indonesia (abbreviated as UI)(in Indonesian: Universitas Indonesia), Depok, West Java October 4th, 2010 We have scheduled two meetings with both UI EE and UI CS department at 10AM today. The distance from GrandKemang hotel to UI campus is approximately 45 minutes. To avoid the traffic jam in Jakarta, we got up at 7:30AM, and leave GrandKemang at 8:30AM by blue bird taxi. The most reliable taxi service in Indonesia: blue bird taxi. 2 We arrived at CS department of UI at 9:30AM, which is 30 minutes earlier than the schedule. We wait in the CS lounge and review all the possible collaborations that both UI and NTUST might be interested. Around 10AM, UI CS dean’s secretary (Lelya Rimadhiana) drove Prof. Poki Chen and Prof. Kuo-Lung Lian to EE department for their meeting, while Prof. Jiann-Liang Chen and Prof. Kai-Lung Hua heading to the UI CS dean’s office. Prof. Chan Basaruddin(UI CS dean), Dina Chahyati, Mr. Wisnu Jatmiko (the research manager of the faculty), Ms. Dina Chahyati was waiting in the dean’s office for us. Prof. Jiann-Liang Chen first gave a short introduction of NTUST EECS college and CS department. Prof. Jiann-Liang Chen then proposed the idea of joint conference with not only UI, but also univsersities from Singapore, and Malaysia. UI CS dean mentioned that they have been working with Japan for a joint conference already, maybe we could work together and expand the size of the conference together. Besides, Prof. Chan Basaruddin also mentioned the possibilities that we could work on joint publication. For example, a UI student might take courses for his/her first PhD year in UI, and exchange to NTUST for research collaboration; for the last year of his/her PhD life, the student could go back to UI and finish his/her thesis there. On the other hand, Prof. Poki Chen and Kuo-Lung Lian was led to the EE department and greeted by the head of the department, Prof. Dr. Ir. Muhamad Asvial. 3 Prof. Asvial was glad that Prof. Poki Chen and Kuo-Lung Lian could come to UI. However, he suggested that in the futuer, it is better to email him a list of the names of visiting members in advance so that he could indentify whom he had met before. Both Profs. Poki Chen and Lian agreed with him and made sure that this would be mentioned in the report. Prof. Asvial stated that students from UI were doing quite well at NTUST and would like to extend the current dual Master’s degree to the dual Ph. D degree. Furhtermore, collaborations such as adjunct professors, professor/ students exchange program between NTUST and UI could all be implemented. These great ideas were immediately supported by both members from the NTUST. Furthermore, Prof. Poki Chen suggested that the two schools could hold a joint conference each year. Prof. Asvial was glad to hear this idea and told us an example of a joint conference they held with a Japanese university. The joint conference between UI and the Japanese school was held every year and the annual conferences alternated between UI and the Japanese school. He suggested that such a joint conference could also be arranged between NTUST and UI. Prof. Lian also suggested that it is also a good idea if the three school i.e. UI, NTUST and the Japanese university could jointly hold a conference each year and the venue of the conference would alternate among the three schools. Prof. Prof. Dr. Ir. Muhamad (EE department chair, UI) received gifts from Poki Chen (NTUST). 4 Prof. Asvial then led Prof. Poki Chen and Prof. Lian to the office of Prof. Anondho Wijanarko, the associate dean for student, alumni relation and networking affairs. Prof. Anondho explained the difference between the two schools in terms of signing an MOU, and agreed to assist to establish the freiendship between NTUST and UI. From left to right: Profs. Lian (NTUST), Poki Chen (NTUST), Wijanarko (UI) and Asvial (UI) 5 Mr. Wisnu Jatmiko, Prof. Kai-Lung Hua, Prof. Jiann-Liang Chen, Prof. Chan Basaruddin, and Ms. Dina Chahyati. Prof. Chan Basaruddin(UI CS dean) received gifts from Prof. Jiann-Liang Chen(NTUST EECS vice dean). 6 Prof. Jiann-Liang Chen(NTUST EECS vice dean) received gifts from Prof. Chan Basaruddin(UI CS dean). After discussing the collaboration between UI and NTUST, Mr. Wisnu Jatmiko showed Prof. Jiann-Liang Chen and Prof. Kai-Lung Hua some interesting and excellent research work of their labs. 7 Around 11AM, Ms. Dina Chahyati helped us hold our recruit session in the conference room. Prof. Jiann-Liang Chen first gave an introduction of NTUST and EECS college. Afterward, Prof. Poki Chen, Prof. Kuo-Lung Lian, and Prof. Kai-Lung Hua introduced ET, EE, and CS department of NTUST, respectively. There were about 15~20 UI students came to the recruit session. Among all these applicants, two students got the admission letter and NTUST scholarship: Adl Wlbowo(CS) and Ramadhan Sagalafrom(EE). 8 Prof. Jiann-Liang Chen was introducing CEECS and scholarship programs to the UI students. Prof. Poki Chen was introducing the ET department of NTUST. 9 Prof. Kai-Lung Hua was interviewing UI CS students. 10 A student from UI was being interviewed by Profs. Silver bird taxi is generally Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The price is about four times than the blue bird taxi, but it offers receipt. However since the price for blue bird is much cheaper, we only took silver bird once. 14 Friends met during UI visit: 15 Admitted UI students: EE: Ramadhan Sagalafrom CS: Adl Wlbowo Future Collaboration: (1) Joint conference with not only UI, but also univsersities from Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan. (2) Joint publication: through exchange PhD students, we could do some research together. 16 Visit to ITB, Bandung Oct. 5 and 6, 2010 Profs. Poki Chen, Hua, and Lian left for Bundung on Oct. 5 by means of a door-to-door car service, called by the staff of Grandkemang Hotel Jakarta at Jakata. It took us about 2 and half hours to reach the hotel, which Miss Tita Rosita from the ITB (Institut Teknologi Bandung) had kindly booked for us in advance. The name of the hotel was Bumi Sawunggaling Hotel, quite close to the ITB. In addition, about five-minute walk from Bumi Sawunggaling Hotel, there was a place called Dago Palaza in which we had enjoyed delicious local food. Bumi Sawunggaling Hotel On the afternoon of Oct. 5, we met an important person from the NTUST at Bumi Sawunggaling Hotel. His name is Prof. Shuo-Yan Chou, the Dean of office of international affairs. It was such a coincidence that his visitation to ITB was also scheduled for Oct. 6 and 7. At the night, the four members from the NTUST (Profs. Shuo-Yan Chou, Poki Chen, Kai-Lung and Kuo-Lung Lian) went to the downtown of Bundung for dinner. 17 Profs. On the evening (around 7:30pm) of Oct. 6, the deparment chair of CS from NTUST, Prof. Chyouhwa arrived at Bumi Sawunggaling Hotel to join Prof. Poki Chen, Kai-Lung Hua, and Prof. Kuo-Lung Lian for the formal visitation of ITB on the morning of Oct. 7. Oct. 7, 2010 On the morning of Oct. 7, we took a blue bird taxi to the ITB. Since Bumi Sawunggaling Hotel is quite close to the ITB, it only took us 15 minutes or so to reach the school of electrical engineering and informatics (SEEI) of the ITB. Greeted by Miss Tita Rosita, we were led to the meeting room at the 2nd floor of Achmad Bakrie Building of SEEI where the establishment of the friendship and interviews took place. Achmad Bakrie Building of SEEI The Dean of SEEI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Adang Suwandi Ahmad,Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Dr. Ir. Suhartono Tjondronegoro, and Dr. Ayu Purwarianti from the informatics reseerach division were present on that day and their hospitalities were greatly appreciated by the NTUST members.. 19 The Dean and Vice Dean of SEEI of ITB received gifts from Prof. Chyouhwa Chen. Dr. Ayu Purwarianti received gifts from Prof. Chyouhwa Chen 20 Prof. Poki Chen from NTUST received gifts from the Dean of SEEI of ITB. After exchanging gifts and souvenirs from both schools, the short introductions to each school and its department were conducted by the representative members from each school. Prof. Chyouhwa Chen was introducing the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of the NTUST. From the presentation of Prof. Dr. Ir. Adang Suwandi Ahmad, we learned that the 21 research programs of SEEI focused on were electrical energy alternative, devices and instrumentation systems, information and communication, advaced computing and engineering education. These areas of research were aligned with those of the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (CEECS) at the NTUST, which provided plentiful opportunities for both sides to collaborate. Prof. Dr. Ir. Adang Suwandi Ahmad was showing the slide introducing the research programs of SEEI at the ITB. One example that Prof. Ir. Adang Suwandi Ahmad mentioned and could be the collaboration opportunity between ITB and NTUST was the development of the smart car. One aspect in the development of smart cars was the development of machine vision, in which one used vision sensors to do measurements and judgments instead of human eyes. To process 3-D road images in an efficient and continuous manner was something that the NTUST team could help ITB to develop. 22 Prof. Dr. Ir. Adang Suwandi Ahmad was explaining some of the research collaboration opportunities between ITB and NTUST. After the presentations, representatives from both schools went on discussing some of the potential collaboration opportunities between both schools. In particular, the extensions from the existing dual Master’s program to the dual Ph. D. program were strongly favored by both parties. Prof. Ir. Adang Suwandi Ahmad illustrated the advantages of the dual Ph. D. programs by means of an IC design example. An electronic engineering student who enrolled in the dual Ph. D. program can design his/her IC at the ITB in the first year. Then, he/she could take his/her designs to the NTUST and send it for foundury in the second year. 23 Prof. Dr. Ir. Suhartono Tjondronegoro was showing a picture in which ITB studetns received IC design awards last year in Japan. Profs. Chyouhwa Chen, Poki Chen, Kai-Lung Hua, and Kuo Lung Lian could not agree more with Prof. Ahmad’s suggestions and further suggested adding adjunct professor, student/professor exchange programs, and joint conferences on the list of collarboration. Since we had an airplane to catch at 2:25pm, the student introduction/interview session was held right after the staff meeting. A total of 13 ITB students came for the interview. After Prof. Chyouhwa Chen’s introduction to CEECS and scholarship programs, Prof. Poki Chen’s to the ET department, Prof. Kai-Lung Hua’s to the CS and Prof. Kuo-Lung Lian’s to the EE, the students were divided into two groups. Students interested in applying for CS were interviewed by Profs. Chyouhwa Chen and Kai-Lung Hua while those interested in applying for EE and ET were interviewed by Profs. Poki Chen and Kuo-Lung Lian. About 2/3 of interviewed students got admission letters, proving the fact that ITB was the top 1 school at Indonesia in the fields of engineering and science. The names of students who got the admission letters are as follows: Teuku Muhammad Roffi (Electro-Optical), Fadia Dewanda (Electrical), Siti Intan P. (Electronics), Aidilla Prandini (Electronics), Erick Adiugraha (Electronics), Seplebina Sifumorang (Electrical), M. Fathi Yakan M. (Electrical), Abdi Suryadinata (CS) and Nataniel Depo (Electrical). 24 Prof. Chyouhwa Chen was introducing CEECS and scholarship programs to the ITB students. Prof. Poki Chen was introducing the ET department of the NTUST. 25 Prof. Hua was introducing the CS department of the NTUST. Prof. Lian was introducing the EE department of the NTUST. 26 Teuku Muhammad Roffi got admission letter from Prof. Poki Chen. Miss Fadia Dewanda got admission letter from Prof. Kuo-Lung Lian 27 After visiting ITB EE and CS departments, the secretary of ITB EE helped us to rent a Blue bird taxi to the Bandung airport. However, the local airplane had a terrible delay and we arrived at Surabaya airport as late as 6:30pm. Luckily enough, Mr. Totok Mujiono waited there to pick us up to Hotel Majapahit. It’s really nice of ITS EE to have this kind arrangement for us and was definitely a nice beginning for our visit. Wings (or Lions) airline caused us a huge delay from Bandung to Surabaya Mr. Totok Mujiono and his students to host us for the first night 28 Achievements A. Future cooperation agreed by both sides Joint conference Dual degree program for PhD students Exchange programs for both graduates and undergraduates B. Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering Abdi Suryadinata Friends met during ITB visit 29 Visit to ITS, Surabaya 30 October 8th, 2010 In the morning of Oct. 8th, ITS EE send some students to pick us up in Hotel Majapahit. We went to visit Faculty of Information Technology first and were hosted by Dr. Agus Zainal Arifin, vice dean for academic affairs. Several faculty members and students of Information Technology also joined the meeting. One of them, Mr. Misbakhul Munir Irfan Subakti, was more than happy to meet us. Actually he got NTUST master degree, and then went to National Chiao-Tung University for PhD program. Before finish the program, he switched his study to Europe. Unfortunately, he couldn´t get enough scholarship for further study. He went back ITS for teaching last year and decide to continue his PhD program in NTUST. He had contacted Prof. Shun-Feng Su for PhD study and got his permission. He not only joined our meting but also strongly promoted his colleagues and students for our recruitment. Since he’s smart and good at English and Mandarin both, Prof. Lian decided to give him NTUST EE admission letter immediately. He helped us a lot and behaved as an extremely successful model for our international students. If every international student of us acts this way, NTUST shall become Taiwan top 1 in the near future. This is the reason we would like to spend tons of time and effort for international cooperation and student recruitment. Our visit to Faculty of Information Technology 31 Mr. Misbakhul Munir Irfan Subakti got PhD admission letter from NTUST EE Next, CE members of our group stayed for student recruitment. Meanwhile, our EE members were invited to attend the big event of ITS EE, annual EE convention and competition for both undergraduate and high school students, in Surabaya city center. We chatted with many attendees in detail and found this competition could inspire many young students to continue their EE study to colleges or universities. We were much amazed to find that some high school students bravely face us to explain their work for competition. It impressed us a lot. Hope our own young students could be educated to behave in similar way. The creator and the director of this event, Dr. Mochamad Hariadi, welcomed us in the convention hall by himself. We learned a lot from his experience to be in charge of this event and were informed its important impacts on ITS and Indonesia. At noon, Dr. Mochamad Hariadi was kind enough to drive us back to ITS EE to continue our visit there. 32 Our EE members at convention center Dr. Mochamad Hariadi introduced the convention to our EE members Before guest lecture, we were kindly invited to have lunch buffet with faculty members of ITS EE. Many possible future co-operations were discussed in the same time. It made our visit more efficient. 33 Our EE team members enjoyed lunch buffet with ITS EE colleagues Since 1:30pm, Prof. Poki Chen was invited to give a lecture talk to ITS graduate students in the title of “Innovative Time-Domain Smart Temperature Sensor Design”. Many banners of the lecture were hanged in and even outside ITS campus to honor Prof. Chen. It revealed much hospitality of ITS and we really appreciated it. For the lecture, Prof. Chen talked about the operation principle and time-domain smart temperature sensors. All were given in comprehensive and straightforward illustrations. No complicated formula derivation was involved to encourage ITS students for further thinking. To inspire students, Prof. Chen even pointed out that IQ is not everything. To be successful or even outstanding in the future, the students had better have good EQ, such as hard-working, and be innovative. The reaction of students was totally out of expectation. They not only enjoyed but also were enthusiastic at the lecture topic. Some of them were promoted by the lecture to attend our recruitment in the next day. Some even emailed Prof. Chen for thanking his inspiration and asked for recommendation for their own research. We can proudly to point that the guest lecture is quiet successful and hope similar events can be arranged in the future to make both universities even closer than before. 34 Banner for the guest lecture of Prof. Poki Chen 35 Prof. Poki Chen was awarded for the guest lecture 36 Medal to honor Prof. Poki Chen’s guest lecture In the night, we were invited by Dr. I Ketut Eddy Purnama, vice chair of SITIA 2010, to have dinner with ITS EE faulty members, students and guests for SITIA 2010. After knowing each other, Prof. Tati R. Mengko, former Dean of Faculty for Industrial Technology Institut Teknologi Bandung, would like to have Prof. Poki Chen to visit ITB and have similar lecture there. Prof. H.F.J.M. Koopman from University of Twente, Netherland also had interest to cooperate with NTUST members. When he goes back Holland, he would like to ask his university for possible cooperation with NTUST. Some of ITS EE faulty members were even encouraged to pursue PhD program from NTUST and really showed up in next day recruitment to get our admission letters. It’s really a nice experience to know so many friends in only one dinner. Thank ITS EE for such kind of invitation and arrangement. 37 October 8th, 2010 In the morning, we were picked up from hotel to ITS National Robotic Building for SITIA 2010. For opening ceremony, we enjoyed Indonesia traditional dance. It’s 38 fantastic for us to have a taste of different culture all around the world. Prof. Poki Chen was arranged to give a lecture speech in the title of “FPGA Vernier Digital-to-Time Converter with 1.58ps Resolution and 59.3 Minutes Operation Range”. Again, Prof. Chen made a great success for this keynote speech. He made attendees laugh all the time while leaning the most innovative way to design the most accurate till now FPGA digital-to-time convert on earth. No tedious equation was involved, but the operation principle and innovation of digital-to-time convert were illustrated in a qualitative instead of quantitative way. Even the students attending SITIA had no difficult to learn digital-to-time convert design. It seemed everybody enjoying the keynote speech a lot. After his speech, many students and professors came to him for congratulations and possible visits or cooperation in the future. Opening ceremony for SITIA 2010 39 Keynote speech of Prof. Poki Chen for SITIA 2010 40 Medal to honor Prof. Poki Chen’s keynote speech Dr. Hermawan Nagar Rasyid, his wife and Prof. Poki Chen in SITIA 2010 41 Prof. H.F.J.M. In coffee break of SITIA, we were driven to meeting place. Although we arrived there late, we could still join their lunch to meet those important EE figures. 42 Before lunch, there was a live Indonesia traditional music performance to please the guests. Amazingly enough, most of the performers were spouses of ITS EE faulty members. Even the SITIA 2010 chair person, Dr. I Made Yulistya Negara, could play some of the music. We were so pleased to be introduced to the dean of Engineering Faculty, UGM. He invited us to visit UGM for cooperation and student recruitment. He pointed Dr. Sarjiya to be our contact window. It means UGM will definitely be in our Indonesia visit list. The dean of Faculty of Life Science, Swiss German University – Asia, Dr. Maruli Pandjaitan, also urged us to visit his university. It’s a good opportunity for our university to widen cooperation all around Indonesia. Live performance for the annual meeting of EE chairmen, Indonesia, 2010 43 Dr. I Made Yulistya Negara, SITIA 2010 chair, met NTUST CS chair at the meeting place The last student recruitment was held in ITS EE this afternoon. With the help of Mr. Misbakhul Munir Irfan Subakti and the promotion by Prof. Poki Chen’s lecture and speech, the number of students joined recruitment was far out of our expectation. The room for recruitment was overwhelmed by students. Some of them couldn’t even find seats to sit down. Our CS department chair gave a brief introduction to NTUST, our college and CS department. Then, Prof. Poki Chen and Prof. Kuo-Lung Lian introduced ET and EE department correspondingly. More than 25 students were interviewed and about half of them got the admission letters from our 3 departments. 44 CS department chair introduced NTUST to ITS students for recruitment Mr. Ahmad Eaim, one ITS EE lecture, got NTUST EE admission letter for PhD program 45 Another ITS EE lecture, Mr. Totok Mujiono, got NTUST EE admission letter for PhD program After student recruitment, we went back to SITIA for closing ceremony. Amazingly enough, with his successful keynote speech, Prof. Poki Chen got many attendees ad his fans. They gathered to take pictures with him. It honored Prof. Chen a lot and might substantially deepen the cooperation between ITS and NTUST in the near future. 46 47 Snapshots for Prof. Chen’s fans in SITIA 2010 After dinner banquet, ITS EE sent a student to drive us to Surabaya airport for coming back Taiwan. The airplane was scheduled to take off in the mid night, 1:25pm. It’s really a hardship for all of us. After days of visiting, everybody became exhausted. However, it’s still our pleasure to have such kind of visit if it can benefit both Indonesian universities and NTUST. 48 Exhausted team members 49 Dean of international affairs office still needed to work in the airport, even much tired already Achievements A.
