Mission Statement
The Summit Foundation strives to inspire donors,
build partnerships and mobilize resources
to support community organizations in Summit County
(and the surrounding Communities) that foster
Health & Human Service, Education, Art & Culture,
Sports & Recreation and Environmental Stewardship.
Dear Friends of The Summit Foundation,
On January 1, 2008, I began my first term as President of the Board of Trustees of The Summit
Foundation. At that time, I set a lofty goal: The Summit Foundation would double the distributions made
to our community through grants and scholarships.
As I complete the first year of my second term as President (thank you to Gini Bradley for presiding
for the two years between my two terms), I am thrilled to note that we have come very, very close to
meeting that audacious goal.
In 2007, we distributed $986,500 to nonprofit organizations and students in Summit, Lake, Park and
Grand Counties.
Thanks to your generosity – and to the generosity of our donor advised funds – in 2012, The Foundation
awarded just under $1.7 million in grants and scholarships to our mountain communities.
As this report reflects, The Foundation also hit other major milestones in 2012 including:

Selling all 300 transferable ski passes so kindly allocated to us by the ski areas
Raising more than $280,000 through our employee payroll deduction program
Growing the endowment fund assets to $5.6 million
Earning over $100,000 from our 25th annual Rubber Duck Race
Receiving more than $1.6 million in contributions to our operating fund
It is very rewarding for me to reflect on the remarkable growth of The Foundation and the significant
increase in our ability to support the local community over the last five years. We could not have done it
without you.
At The Summit Foundation, we appreciate every individual who has bought or sold a rubber duck, who
has responded to an appeal with a kind gift, or has designated The Summit Foundation in their estate
plan. It is because of you that we have been able to meet and exceed our goals.

cultural enrichment and arts-based
education for Summit County’s
guests and residents. Our professional theater performances
and music concerts reach over
35,000 patrons annually, and
our youth education and adult
enrichment programs reach
more than 4,500 individuals
and families each year.
Thanks to funding support
from The Summit Foundation,
continues to invest in our
community in a variety of ways.
The “LDTC Gives Back”
program invites local nonprofits
to partner with us to raise funds
for worthy causes. Through this
initiative created in 2009, we
have helped raise over $10,000
to support operating funds for organizations including Friends of the Dillon
Ranger District, League of Animals
and People of the Summit, Summit
Community Care Clinic, Keystone
Science School, Summit County Arts
for the Summit, Family & Intercultural
Resource Center, Advocates for Victims
of Assault, and Summit School District’s
Bullying Prevention Program.
Additionally, because of the support
from The Summit Foundation and other
local partnerships, we offer scholarships
each spring to at least one graduating
high school senior who plans to major or
minor in a performing art. Since 1998,
we have provided 16 scholarships totaling
over $12,000 to actors, technicians,
dancers, and singers. Also, we provide
annual tuition scholarships to select
students who participate in our youth
theatre workshops.

to purchase an accessible bus
to transport participants as
one group. We received the
bus during our intern pot
luck on May 29th, which
was the last day of staff
training. It was awesome to
pull up in it because all the
staff came running out super
excited to see and learn how
to use the new bus.
On a regular basis throughout my 10
years with the BOEC, I have seen participants have to be separated from the rest
of their group for transportation in the
old accessible van. I have seen our staff
struggle, sweat, and sometimes try to
get participants transferred out of their
wheelchairs and into our other vans
because they just couldn’t bear to tell the
student, “You have to ride by yourself”.
With this new bus, my friend Steve who
has a traumatic brain injury was able to
be transported with the rest of his group
for the first time. He got to laugh and
sing all the way to the river with everyone else. Not only did he get to ride with
the whole group but he got to sit in the
middle, not all the way in the back where
he can’t hear or see what’s going on. He
was totally included in the entire day for
the first time in his many years of coming
to the BOEC. When asked what he
thought about our new bus, Steve gave
a very enthusiastic thumbs up and one
of his few words, ”Yeah!”

Leadville, and Vail. Those scholarship recipients follow:

On April 2nd, 99 members of the Summit High School Class of 2012 were awarded approximately $316,000
from 76 community organizations. Among these awards, The Summit Foundation and its partners provided 63
students with $129,400 in scholarships. Ten of the scholarships awarded by The Foundation were distributed
through a joint program with Summit County Government. Since 1991, The Foundation’s scholarship program
has awarded more than $1.85 million to local high school graduates.

In November 2007, The Anschutz Foundation and NRC Broadcasting established a scholarship fund through
The Summit Foundation. Through this fund in 2012, $24,857 was awarded to 14 seniors at Summit High School

In its 22 year history, over 220 individuals, families, businesses and community
organizations have been honored for their tireless work to improve the quality
of life in Summit County through their commitment to the community through
varying entities.
Awards are presented in recognition of outstanding contributions in ten
categories: Philanthropist, Volunteer, Board Member, Professional in a Nonprofit
Organization, Educator, Youth, Youth Mentor, Citizen, Nonprofit/Community
Organization and Business. A Community Collaboration Award began in 2001.

The contribution of transferable ski privileges has created a partnership
between The Summit Foundation, Vail Resorts, Copper Mountain Resort and
Arapahoe Basin, and illustrates the commitment each of the ski resorts
provide to support vital and treasured services in our community. The
partnership translates into participation by ski area representatives being
part of the grant award process and giving back to the Summit County
community.
Anchored by the transferable skiing privileges, which are provided complimentary to The Foundation from the above resorts, the Patron Pass Program
earned more than $825,000 in funding for The Summit Foundation in 2012.
This funding represented a significant portion of the $1.6 million awarded
by The Foundation in 2012. As the 2012/2013 season began, the 300 passes
allocated to The Summit Foundation were fully committed for the first time
in the organization’s history.

of individuals who have planned for the future by designating a gift in their estate to meet ongoing community needs.

An Organized Way to Give Back Through Donor Advised Funds
Breckenridge Grand Vacations is a major employer in the community and a significant contributor to the nonprofit sector.
In addition to their personal involvement throughout the community, the owners of Breckenridge Grand Vacations are
deeply committed to supporting the many nonprofit agencies that make Summit County such a wonderful place to live.
To that end, Breckenridge Grand Vacations established a community giving program designed to make grant and
sponsorship funding available to the nonprofit agencies serving the Summit County community. They’ve partnered with
The Summit Foundation to do so.
The way it works
A certain amount of funding is budgeted every year by the business to give back to the community. By establishing a donor
advised fund with The Summit Foundation, the company gets a tax break for donating as soon as the money is contributed
to The Foundation. Donor Advised Funds, or DAFs, allow donors to make a tax-deductible gift today while choosing the
charities to support at a later date.
The money is invested by The Summit Foundation and earnings are able to further the distributions to the nonprofits in
the community.
The Foundation helped the company with formalizing their grant application process – through which the nonprofits apply
to the company for funds. Requests are reviewed twice per year. As a result, the giving to the community is more fair and
equitable than it had been previously – in which all nonprofits work through the same process to apply for funds.
By creating a donor advised fund, a donor receives many benefits similar to those of a private charitable foundation but
without the costs, administrative responsibilities and government reporting requirements.
“The Foundation brings the day to day contact with the nonprofits, which allows us to rely on their expertise to share community needs for particular organizations we are interested in,” notes Breckenridge Grand Vacations owner Rob Millisor,
who has also established a family fund with The Foundation. “And ultimately, we get the expertise of The Foundation in
managing our charitable contribution dollars.”

behind every gift is the same.

Making a gift to The Summit Foundation can be as simple as writing a check or attending an event hosted by The Foundation or as sophisticated as designing an individual estate plan. Many charitable giving options are noted here. These
gifts can be made through specific programs like those noted below. More details on each of these opportunities can be
found by visiting summitfoundation.org.

PLANNED GIFTS
Do you dream about doing more for your loved ones AND for the causes you care most about? Making a planned gift to
The Foundation can provide significant tax benefits, while also permanently linking your long-standing support to The
Summit Foundation. Following are a variety of tools for giving that will make a lasting difference.
Donor Advised Funds
Outright Gifts
Establishing an advised fund allows you to make a gift to The Summit Foundation and then remain
actively involved in suggesting charitable causes to designate gifts, targeting the issues you care about
most. Types of advised funds include memorial funds, scholarship funds, agency endowment funds, and
field of interest funds.
Cash, check, credit card, and stock contributions are the most common ways to give. These donations,
which offer maximum tax advantages, are accepted throughout the year and may be designated to the
annual operating fund or The Foundation’s Endowment Fund.
Bequests
Patron Pass Program
Fully transferable ski privileges generously provided by Arapahoe Basin Ski Area, Breckenridge Ski Resort,
Copper Mountain Resort, Keystone Resort, Vail Mountain and Beaver Creek Resort is at the heart of this
program. Complimentary golf and Nordic skiing, as well as discounts throughout the county for lodging,
dining, services and activities are also offered through the program.
Employee Giving Program
More than 25 businesses partner with The Summit Foundation to encourage their employees to pledge
a payroll deduction to benefit The Foundation. In many cases, the company matches the gifts designated
by individual employees. The Foundation welcomes additional partnerships with employers throughout
the community.
Naming The Foundation as the beneficiary in your will, trust or qualified retirement plan can be the
simplest gift. Because these assets often carry a heavy income tax obligation to your heirs, they can be
a particularly attractive source for funding your charitable gifts.
Charitable Lead Trust
You can name The Foundation as beneficiary of income from a trust for a specific number of years. Your
estate taxes are reduced and the property is not taxed to your children. When your children or grandchildren reach maturity, the Trust terminates and they receive the assets. The community benefits during all
of those years and your loved ones receive much more than they would otherwise.
Gift Annuity
Special Events & Projects
The Foundation raises monies through a variety of special events and projects each year. Become involved
by sponsoring, volunteering, donating products or services, or by simply attending.
You can create a gift annuity by making a gift of cash, property, or appreciated stock. In return, The
Foundation pays you a guaranteed annual income for life. You receive significant tax advantages,
including an immediate tax deduction for your gift. In addition, a portion of each income payment you
receive is tax-free. After your death, the remainder of your annuity is used to create a charitable
endowment fund in your name.
Charitable Remainder Trust
Similar to a gift annuity, a charitable remainder trust will pay you a guaranteed annual income for life.
The Trust is established by you and is held by you until your death, at which time the remainder of the
estate is donated to The Foundation.
Gifts of Real Estate
Real estate and other property can be donated to The Foundation, allowing a donor to establish a
charitable gift annuity if requested and/or receive maximum tax benefits.
All gifts are professionally managed and pooled for diversified investment and economies of scale and to increase their charitable impact.
Investment performance is reviewed quarterly by financial experts and monitored by the Finance Committee and The Foundation’s
Board of Trustees.
