Epiphany - St. Vincent de Paul Parish
St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church 1500 DePaul Street Elmont, N.Y. 11003 “A Parish With Heart” Epiphany of the Lord January 5, 2014 Pastoral Staff Rev. Msgr. Richard M. Figliozzi, Administrator Outreach Services – (516) 354-4976 Maureen Russell Parish Social Ministry Coordinator Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 9:00 am to 1:00 pm The Epiphany of the Lord January 5, 2014 From Msgr. Figliozzi Scriptural Reflection for the Week “For he shall rescue the poor one when he cries out, and the afflicted when he has no one to help him. He shall have pity for the lowly and the poor; the lives of the poor he shall save.” (see Psalm 72) This Psalm speaks of the king who is to be the Messiah, the Anointed One. This is the One sent by God who hears the cry of the poor. This is the One who will bring justice to the earth. This is the One who will save humanity from the selfishness that leads to death. On this feast of the Epiphany, the kings of this world know they are to do homage to the King sent from Heaven. Earthly kings know to bow before the Heavenly King who is before them as a new born. This new born will enable all humanity to be born again—by the Holy Spirit. In this way, justice may once again prevail—the poor and the lowly ones will not be forgotten. Instead, they will be raised up. New Year’s Resolutions ♦ to develop one’s prayer life by visiting Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. ♦ to develop an attentive conscience by going to confession with more regularity. ♦ to become a more active member of the parish by volunteering your time and talent. Carnevale 2014 at St. Catherine’s Is scheduled for Saturday, February 22nd (snow date is March 1). Tickets will be available soon. Dinner is being prepared by Papa Ciro’s of New Hyde Park and the evening’s entertainment will be provided by the group, PRIMAVERA (musicbyprimavera.com). Watch the bulletin for more information. Recent Collections Parish: $5,147.00 (12/22/2013) Flowers & Music: $245.00 Christmas Novena: $635.00 One Final Thought “Faith in action is love, and love in action is service. By transforming that faith into living acts of love, we put ourselves in contact with God himself, with Jesus our Lord.” - Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Stewardship….. Solemnity of the Epiphany Reflection Today we remember the three wise men from the East who came to pay homage to the infant Jesus, bringing Him rich gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. The gifts we bring - our time and service and some share of what we earn for the work we do - are equally precious in His sight. Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who provide for the physical, social and emotional health of young women facing motherhood without adequate resources by supporting Regina Residence through Catholic Charities and the Diocesan Respect Life Office. Thank you Retired Priest in Residence Rev. William D. O’Rourke Deacons Joseph Benincasa Frank Gonzalez Pope Francis sends Christmas presents to 2,000 poor immigrants: Catholic News Agency (CNA) Rome, Italy, Dec 18, 2013 / 11:33 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Two thousand immigrants at a shelter near the Vatican received simple Christmas presents from Pope Francis on the evening of Dec. 14. “The guests were very happy,” said Sister Michelle, the superior of Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in Rome. Each practical gift package consisted of a small envelope containing a Christmas card signed by Pope Francis, postal stamps, a pre-paid international calling card, and a free day-pass for Rome’s metro. The gift packages were distributed at the Dono di Maria, the shelter operated by the Missionaries of Charity just a few steps from the Vatican. In a Dec. 16 interview with CNA, Sr. Michelle said the immigrants received the presents with love and were thankful for the opportunity to call and write their loved ones during the Christmas season. The Holy Father brought joy to their hearts, she said, as many have little or no education and no knowledge of Italian. They survive in Rome with the help of the Missionaries of Charity. The city of Rome sees the arrival every day of new immigrants. Many come in total poverty, fleeing from regions in Africa plagued by armed conflict or from the scourge of poverty and human trafficking in Asia and Eastern Europe. Sr. Michelle noted that concern for the poor is characteristic of this papacy. “The Pope is very familiar with our work here and understands the realities that people face,” she said. She added that Benedict XVI had also reached out to those in need through various initiatives, in ways that were never publicized by the Holy See’s Press Office. Archbishop Konrad Krajewski – who holds the office of papal almoner and is responsible for sending modest donations to those in need on behalf of the Holy Fahter – helped the sisters hand out the gifts. They were joined by other volunteers at the shelter. The Dono di Maria home was founded 25 years ago by Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta with the blessing of Blessed John Paul II. Mother Teresa also founded a soup kitchen in Vatican City State dedicated to St. Martha, the patron saint of hospitality. Pope Francis visited the Missionaries of Charity home on May 21 to personally congratulate the community on the 25th anniversary of its founding. St. Vincent de Paul Society & Parish Ministry (Outreach) How does anyone say “Thank You” to an angel? You are the angels we are trying to thank. All of you who took an Angel off the Angel Giving Tree and brought back gift certificates and cash that we gave to the poor families in our area. The amount was well over $1,000.00. Again, how do we say “Thank You” to angels like you, except that it comes from deep within our hearts. We also want to thank all the people who came to deliver the Christmas baskets and all the volunteers who helped to organize and fill over 125 Christmas baskets. THANK YOU….THANK YOU...THANK YOU… Our pantry is in need of canned potatoes & jelly.
