Hi Everyone,
Thanks to all who helped support the sock hop. I know I had a good time and was
pleased with the turn out. Enjoy the nice weather and Happy Fathers Day to all our dads.

Tom Moore—Outreach program
This is only the 2nd month that Tom has been here at the Center so this
is more of a welcoming article and an opportunity for us to know more about
him.
On page 8 is an article about the Outreach program in Lake County and
explains how important the service is to seniors. In May there was an
interview with Donna Mandeville who is our Outreach director and last June,
the article on Sarah Tansey who is our Meals on Wheels co-coordinator.
The three of them share an office and are making sure that Lakeport has
the best possible services available.
Tom has always enjoyed community work and making a positive impact with life so he was
perfect for the challenge of working at our center. He really likes to travel, do gardening and
has hobbies of water sports, computers, and enjoys music. In his spare time he is a disc
jockey and a producer for independent artists for music. He did a great job for us at the Sock
Hop with his DJ skills. Each year he is a major organizer with the Yacht Club in putting
together the Duct Tape & Cardboard Boat Regatta in Lakeport.
He is also involved with the VFW organization. Tom served in Vietnam from 1972 through
1978 and was in the reserves until 1985. He was also stationed in Okinawa, Korea and
Germany so he has seen a lot of different areas.
He has been in Lake County for only 3 years but has always liked the Lake area. He spent
35 years in Mendocino. Long Beach in Southern California was where he was born and
raised.
There are four children in his life. Tom, Samantha, Laura and Rheannon. Two are in the
Air Force and living in Germany and Italy, one is on the East Coast and one on the West
Coast so they are definitely scattered.
Stop by and introduce yourself to Tom and find out more about him and what he is trying to
accomplish for us. I know he and Donna have lots of great ideas and have just started a new
class last month called “Eat Better, Move More”. Check it out on the schedule. Welcome
Tom!!
The Fundraiser Committee is always looking for ideas,
volunteers and help. 1 Don’t be afraid to offer suggestions.
Hospital regulations require a wheel chair for patients being discharged. However, while
working as a student nurse, I found one elderly gentleman already dressed and sitting on the
bed with a suitcase at his feet, who insisted he didn’t need my help to leave the hospital.
After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let me wheel him to the elevator. On the way
down I asked him if his wife was meeting him.
“I don’t know,” he replied. “She’s still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital
gown.
Three Lakeport senior ladies are out walking:
The first one says, “Windy, isn’t it?”
The second one says, “No, it’s Thursday!”
The third one says, “So am I. Let’s go get a beer.”
Two antennas met on a roof, fell in love and got married. The ceremony wasn’t much, but the
reception was excellent.

A guy is 70 years old and loves to fish. He was sitting in his boat the other day when he heard a
voice say, 'Pick me up.' He looked around and couldn't see any one. He thought he was dreaming
when he heard the voice say again, 'Pick me up.'
He looked in the water and there, floating on the top, was a frog.
The man said, 'Are you talking to me?'
The frog said, 'Yes, I'm talking to you. Pick me up then, kiss me & I'll turn into the most beautiful
woman you have ever seen. I'll make sure that all your friends are envious & jealous because I will be your bride!'
The man looked at the frog for a short time, reached over, picked it up carefully, & placed it in his front breast pocket.
Then the frog said, 'What, are you nuts? Didn't you hear what I said? I said kiss me and I will be your beautiful bride.'
He opened his pocket, looked at the frog and said, 'Nah, at my age I'd rather have a talking frog.'
With age comes wisdom.

OUR NEW ORGANIC GARDEN
This month we are focusing on our new garden that is now in
progress. Instead of one volunteer in this section, the Center would
like to acknowledge others in our community who are helping to
make this a reality. Without their help it would not be possible to pull
this project off.
The land for this garden is across the street from our center. The
parcel belonged to the City of Lakeport, and was loaned to us by the
City Council under the direction of Mayor Ron Bertsch. The idea is
for it to be used as not only a source of healthy vegetables for our
nutrition program but also, a fundraising and educational resource for our center.
Grading and dirt work was furnished by Marsh Andersen of Andersen Construction. Above photo is Marsh
doing the finish grading and his friend Gary McCullough helping out. The mayor of Lakeport, Ron Bertsch,
performed most of the labor installing the fence and gates.
Our next project is the raised garden beds and Boy Scout Troop #42 member, Grant Teuscher, has chosen this
as his project for Eagle Scout. Stop by to see Grant‘s progress.
Other volunteers that we would like to thank are Pat Skoog, who headed the program, along with team members
Jean Welsh, Mike Swartz and “Doc” Starin for their help in planning. Betty Lou Surber, is another member who is
providing starter vegetables for planting, and there is the Lakeport Senior Social Club for their generous donations
in making this possible.
What this project will provide is vegetables for our Meals on Wheels program
and meals served here at the center. This will guarantee fresh produce and
insure that our seniors are getting plenty of the nutrients needed.
This will be an ongoing project and we will have seniors involved in the
planting, weeding and harvesting of the garden. We will be adding additional
photos as the season progresses and hopefully pictures of great vegetables later
in the year.
Poor Preacher
After the church service a little boy told the pastor, "When I grow up, I'm going to give you some
money."
"Well, thank you," the pastor replied, "but why?"
"Because my daddy says you're one of the poorest preachers we've ever had."

* * * STUFF * * *
We work all our lives to buy some stuff, and then
the first thing we know, we have too much stuff.
Are these items below male or female?
You may not know this but many non living items are male
or female. Many languages recognize this. Please check
each item and then you can find the answers below.
When we go on vacation we have to take some
stuff along but most of our stuff we have to leave
at home. We worry about somebody taking our
stuff.
When we clean out the attic we find all kinds of
stuff. Some stuff is pretty good but most of it is
simple “old stuff”.
We go to all kinds of sales to look for stuff and
then at garage sales we buy stuff that we usually
end up putting in the next garage sale so others
can buy the stuff.
Sometimes we are lucky and find real good stuff.
We make all kinds of stuff in our spare time and
when we have a little money we buy more stuff to
make stuff.
We need to eat but we have to be careful to buy
the right stuff. Some of the stuff we buy isn’t
always good for us.
The price of stuff keeps going up and up
nowadays and we don’t get much stuff for our
money.
One more thing about stuff is this: We can’t take
it with us when we die.
I think I have enough stuff but sometimes I would
like some different stuff. Wouldn’t you?

1. (freezer bags) Male because they hold everything in
but you can see right through them.
2. (copier) Female because once turned off, it takes
awhile to turn back on again. They are an effective
reproductive device if the right buttons are pushed but
can also wreck havoc if you push the wrong buttons.
3. (tires) Male because they go bald easily and are often
over inflated.
4. (Egg timers) Female because over time all the weight
shifts to the bottom.
5. (web pages) Female because they are constantly
being looked at and frequently getting hit on.
6. (hammer) Male because in the last 5000 years they
have hardly changed at all and are occasionally
handy to have around.
7. (hot air balloons) Male because to get them to go
anywhere you have to light a fire under their butt.
8. (remote) Female (Ha!) You probably thought it was
male but consider this; It easily gives a man pleasure,
he’d be lost with out it, and while he doesn’t always
know which buttons to push, he just keeps trying.
9. (Sponges) Female because they are soft, squeezable
and retain water.
10. (Trains) Male because they always use the same old
lines for picking up people.
Produce To-Go
The current recommendation for fruits and vegetables is at least 5 servings a day for older adults.
Reaching this amount on a limited income and access to the supermarket can make this recommendation a challenge. One way around this is to choose packaged varieties of fruits and vegetables without added salt or sugar, as they may be just as healthy as their fresh counterparts.
They can also be easier to prepare, less expensive, and have a longer shelf life. Here are some
good options:
• Canned fruit. Preferably in its own juice or rinse if in syrup
• Frozen fresh fruit, unsweetened blueberries, strawberries, peaches, mangoes.
• Canned or frozen vegetables without added sauces such as greens, carrots and broccoli.

*******Below is an article which gives a very good description on our Lake County Senior Outreach Program*******
Senior Center Outreach:
Connecting seniors with the services they need
Mike Parkinson —— Area Agency on Aging
•
“I hate to be a bother,” the quiet voice on the other
end of the phone said, “but I’m having trouble paying
my gas bills this winter. I’m out of food and haven’t
eaten in two days. I just don’t know who to talk to. Is
there anything you can do to help?”
An hour and several phone calls later, the senior
center outreach worker had put this Lake County elder
in touch with local area programs to assist her with
paying for utilities, obtaining food stamps, enrolling in a
home delivered “Meals on Wheels” program, and had
even arranged transportation for the senior to her local
pharmacy to pick-up several over due prescriptions.
Stories like this happen every day at senior centers
across Lake County. The Area Agency on Aging for
Lake & Mendocino Countries (AAA) Senior Outreach
Program identifies persons 60 and older who do not
normally use existing health and social services,
informs those seniors about available community
resources, and helps them access the services they
need.
Centers provide information, referrals, and direct
services for their senior clients. They identify potential
seniors (or their caregivers) and encourage their use of
existing services and benefits that may enhance or
sustain older individuals’ health, welfare, or
independence.
In many cases, outreach workers deliver services
directly to seniors or their caregivers. The mix of
outreach services at each center varies, but often
includes:
• Visiting or calling on a routine or as-needed basis
to provide reassurance and support
• Assisting with reading, comprehension, and
completion of forms, mail and other paperwork.
• Accompanying, transporting and assisting with
errands such as medical appointments, housing or
legal issues.
• Provide advocacy, assistance, and support in
accessing services or resolving problems.
• Facilitate accessibility of health care by completing
health and safety screenings; (e.g. drug, alcohol,
mental health, and fall prevention) and linking
older individuals with appropriate health services.
• Provide education, referrals, or in-home direct help
to resolve clutter and disorganization.
• Assist in securing an in-home, private pay care
provider for clients ineligible for In-Home
Supportive Services (IHSS)
Other essential services, including educational,
social, or supportive activities offered at the senior
center.
In addition to direct outreach services to seniors, Lake
County senior centers also perform community education.
They inform groups of older persons, their families,
friends, or community organizations on right, benefits, or
entitlements for older persons, including activities and
services available at the senior enter. Community
education can include presentations to groups of service
providers working with older adults, service clubs whose
membership is primarily age 60+, and gatherings of
seniors at the center. Many local centers also participate
in radio interviews geared towards senior audiences.
