The City of Zrenjanin is among pioneers of local economic development
in Serbia and a rare example of a local government which opted for
developing its industrial zones, aimed at encouraging investments and
employment, by means of credit funding. Zrenjanin’s success today is used
as best practice of entrepreneurial financial management in the public sector. The City’s investing is continued – planned reconstruction of the Ecka
Airport, development of a transport center and a pier at the Begej River.
One of 6 duty free zones is in Zrenjanin and the City is running it together with a Slovenian partner – firm Kolpa. Businesses in the zone are
free from custom fees and taxes which may help them make up to 40%
of savings in costs. Zrenjanin has established a business incubator with
successful operations which is something very few municipalities managed
to achieve. Considering that Zrenjanin is the second largest municipality
in Serbia in terms of area size where as much as 80% is fertile land – one
may conclude that their agricultural potential is large.
