PREMIER SENIOR DAY CARE IN GREENWICH 2007-2008 Annual Report RIVER HOUSE Letter From the President My first year as president of GADC has been tremendously rewarding for me and especially GADC. We finished the year on a high note with the Certificate of Occupancy for River House allowing us to start the new year in our new home. On July 1, 2008, GADC clients moved into River House – our exciting new center on the Mianus. This move by GADC to a beautiful, larger, light-filled location with its patio, outdoor gardens and water views is so inspiring – for our clients, their families, our staff, and the community. THE GADC MISSION GADC’s mission is to support and enrich the quality of life for seniors living with age-related needs and impairments in a safe and nurturing environment. GADC PROVIDES • Customized day-time programs and services that stimulate intellectual, physical and emotional well-being. • • Professional monitoring of health and personal care needs. Counsel and peace of mind for caregivers and families. River House is here because of the tireless effort and vision of Carol Burns, our Executive Director, and the enormous efforts of our past and present Boards of Directors. The project is a perfect example of the great things that can be accomplished through a private/public partnership with the Town, State and Federal Governments and our community. It could not have been achieved without the generosity of our donors to both our Campaign for GADC’s Future and to our Annual Appeal. Through your support, GADC not only has a state of the art facility that can serve fifty percent more clients, but we are able to offer new and enhanced programs to promote a healthy, active life for those seniors. Very special thanks goes to our two Volunteers of the Year, John Cooper and Peter McSpadden, who led the Campaign for GADC’s Future. Thanks to their guidance and the hard work of the entire Campaign Committee, we surpassed our goal of $4.7 million. River House is an exceptional resource for our community, and GADC continues to grow because of your help! Thank you! Our organization is governed by a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors whose members are committed to the GADC mission and volunteer a great amount of time. Without them we would not have been able to build our new home, River House. We have such a wonderful group of people, of all ages, that help us make each day the best possible for our clients, a huge thank you to everyone who gives their time and talent to GADC. The New River House The renovation of the historic Pump House began in March 2006 but the project began much earlier than that. In January of 2003 the GADC Board of Directors made the decision to move from Nathaniel Witherell into our own freestanding facility. The project has been overseen by five Boards of Directors and three Presidents. OUR NEW HOME • River House allows GADC to serve more people than before thus meeting the growing needs of seniors identified by the United Way and Commission on Aging. GADC can serve 50% more seniors bringing the capacity to 75 people a day. • River House is highly visible and easily accessible to the community and keeps GADC’s seniors in the mainstream of activity and near town. • River House features breathtaking views of the Mianus River. The serene and ever-changing setting is beneficial to GADC’s seniors. • The new space allows for enhanced activities and allows GADC’s program to continue to grow. A new feature it the safe, secure and spacious outdoor area which features beautiful gardens. • GADC seniors have a center that they are proud and eager to go to. River House promotes independence and choice in a safe and caring environment. After looking at many buildings throughout town it was decided that the 1927 Pump House on the Mianus River would be the perfect place for our new center. The Town of Greenwich leases the building to GADC for $1 a year. The successful completion of River House is the result of a “Public/Private Partnership”. Grants from the State of Connecticut Bond Commission, Greenwich Community Development and the Town of Greenwich plus the generous support of so many individuals and foundations in the community made River House possible. River House, designed by R.S. Granoff Architects with the guidance of GADC’s Board of Directors, the Building Committee, the staff and many volunteers, was custom built for the GADC clients and the growing senior population. The Russian themed gala, held at Milbrook Club on January 26, 2008, was organized by chair Caralyn Stevens with the help of a very talented and creative Committee. A Night at the Winter Palace supported the Campaign for GADC’s Future and was critical in helping us reach our goal! The event featured unique silent and live auctions led by auctioneer John Cooper. A caviar and vodka tasting got the evening off to a magnificent start. There were Russian influenced hors d’oeuvres and dinner, and traditional Russian musicians and dancers. This very successful event raised more than $100,000 and was truly memorable. With the Club transformed into a Russian palace decorated in lush fabrics, rich colors and jewels, guests were whisked away to a bygone era of royalty, grandeur and elegance. John and Ann Caron (left) join event chair Caralyn Stevens (center) and Pat and Dick Geismar. 14th Annual Garden Party Our 14th Annual Garden Party was held on May 1, 2008 at the Riverside Yacht Club. Event chair, Sabrina Forsythe along with her energetic committee organized another fantastic event which featured a silent auction, luncheon and fashion show presented by Saks Fifth Avenue - Greenwich. Garden Party Chair, Sabrina Forsythe with GADC Board President, Kath Burgweger and Garden Party Honoree, Caralyn Stevens. A perfect spring day welcomed over 250 women to the Garden Party. Guests enjoyed perusing the extensive silent auction before dining in the waterside tent decorated with gorgeous orchid centerpieces. The fashion show featured 15 beautiful models who were chosen for their volunteer contributions in the community. This year’s Benefit was particularly meaningful as GADC honored Caralyn Stevens, past Board President. Caralyn played a key role leading the agency through The Campaign for GADC’s Future and the renovation of River House. She and her husband Doug chaired our first ever Gala which raised over $100,000. GADC has grown because of her dedication, vision and loyal friendship. GADC is so grateful to Sabrina and her committee, the event’s underwriters, special contributors, auction donors, Saks Fifth Avenue – Greenwich, Graff Jewelers and Riverside Yacht Club.
