Race Guide - Bicycle Paper.com
Editor’s
notes
With the start of the 2012 season, the focus of many of our best
Northwest racers will be directed on making the final selection to
earn a berth on the U.S. and Canadian Olympic teams. Teammates
will be vying to better each other for a chance to make it to London
come the end of July. Some have been there before, for others it
would be their first experience. In this year’s guide we introduce
those from the region who made the long list so they get recognized
for the efforts put into their quest for excellence.
Not all cyclists dream of Olympic glory. The vast majority are
quite happy to compete at the national or state level every week
— for some, multiple times a week — and for this reason we have
assembled the 10th edition of the NW Race Guide.
It’s almost unbelievable, but Joe Zauner’s brainchild has now
reached the two-digit mark. Over the years it has changed slightly,
with the focus moving from
individual to team profiles,
or a mix of both. The quantity of stats and events showcased in the “Closer Look”
sections has also varied,
even the number of color
pages has changed, but over
the last 10 years one thing
has remained constant — the guide features the most complete compilation of competitions in the Northwest.
Nowhere else can you find in one publication, on the web or
otherwise, all of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and Idaho’s
road, mountain, track and cyclocross events; we even throw some
multisport in for good measure. We list the officially sanctioned
races and also those that are not. We include the large and the small
events without discrimination and pride ourselves in finding new
ones every year, races mostly known to locals only, but are deserving
of a bigger stage.
Our gratitude goes to the state and provincial associations that
provide a good chunk of the data herein and to the organizers that
send us their information with detailed descriptions, saving us a
bunch of research time. I would also like to acknowledge our advertisers, without whom this booklet wouldn’t have seen these
10 candles.
“...the guide features
the most complete compilation of competitions
in the Northwest.”
Enjoy your cycling season,

With 2012 being an Olympic year, many
Northwest riders are in the hunt for a ticket to the
Games to represent either Canada or the United
States. The athletes who made their country’s long
lists for BMX, mountain bike, track and women’s
road teams are now focused on making the final
cut. The men’s road squads, however, will be
based purely on individual performances following
2011 and 2012 results at major international events.

number of spots each country is allowed to fill

A fixture on the
national team, Craig has
been attending Worlds for
10 years. A well-rounded
rider, his collection of
national champion jerseys
is impressive, from short
track to Super D and
marathon events, he also claimed the Singlespeed
World Championship in 2007. He made his Olympic
debut in 2008, placing 29th. Craig made an impressive comeback in 2010 following an early season
ACL surgery, yet he still managed to make the
U.S.World squad and crank out top 30 results.
Stephen Ettinger
(Cashmere, WA / BMC Development)
A rising star on the Elite circuit, he was named
the USA Cycling male athlete of the year in 2011.
The BMC Development Team rider and U23
National Champion may be considered a long shot
for this Olympic selection, but 2016 is lining up
nicely. The changing of the guard is coming.
Georgia Gould (Ketchum, ID / Luna Chix)
After successfully defending her national title
in 2011 and taking second in the Pro XCT series,
Gould is ready to renew her Olympic experience.
She placed 8th in 2008 and was second at the test
event in 2011.
Geoff Kabush (Courtenay, BC / Scott-3Rox)
The highest internationally ranked Canadian (28th),
Kabush is changing colors
in 2012 as he prepares for
the Olympics, and will don
the Scott-3Rox jersey. A
national team member since
his Junior years, he raced in
the Olympics twice, placing
9th in 2000 and 20th in 2008.
His best results in 2011
were a 7th place at the Mont Sainte Anne World
Cup (Canadian stop) and a 10th place at the World
Championships. A six-time consecutive National
Championship winner, his streak was broken in
2011 as he took second to Max Plaxton.
Spencer Paxson (Seattle, WA / Kona)
An emerging rider on the national scene, he
can be found consistently in the top 10 at national
events. Although he made the USA Worlds team
the last two years, he is considered a long shot for
this Olympic cycle.
Catharine Pendrel
(Kamloops, BC / Luna Chix)
One sure way to secure a
place on the start line of the
London cross-country race is
to make the automatic selection criteria, and that’s exactly
what Pendrel did in Campery
last September as she claimed
the World Championships — a
title that had eluded Canada
for the past 15 years (since
Alison Sydor won). “Kika”
has been moving up the international ranks steadily, placing 4th at the Beijing
Olympics, winning the 2010 World Cup overall
title, and the 2011 Olympic test event in addition
to multiple World Cup podiums. She is among the
favorites in the race for gold.
Max Plaxton (Victoria, BC / Specialized USA)
In 2011 Plaxton was
finally able to clinch
the Canadian National
Elite Championships
title, stopping Geoff
Kabush’s record
streak. Well-known on
the U.S. racing circuit,
Plaxton claimed the
Pro XCT title last
season. A Worlds
bronze medalist in the
U23 category back in 2006, he has yet to crack the
Elite top 20 at Worlds but was second at the 2011
Pan American Games. Should he qualify for one of
the two Canadian spots, London would be his first
Olympic appearance.

mountain bike olympic hopefuls
Sam Schultz (Missoula, MT / Subaru Trek)
Racing in one of the toughest groups to qualify
in, Schultz has his work cut out to ensure he gets an
Olympic ticket. He is currently ranked 35th on the
UCI list — the second American behind Todd Wells.

a cross-country race on a 6.5-mile loop, zips through wildflowers and
oak groves and is on 70% singletrack. Big rings will be utilized on all
courses so keep that in mind while choosing your setup if racing on
a singlespeed. To finish: Moderate spring fitness level. To place:
Strong technical skills and the ability to attack with short intense
bursts followed by a quick recovery. To win: An excellent early season fitness level and superb tech skills while staying in the big ring
on the short climbs and the flats.

August 25: Capitol Forest 50/100 (WA)
Located on more than 90,000 acres of open space just south of
Olympia, Wash., the singletrack of Capitol Forest is spectacular —
both buttery smooth and fast. Part of the NW Epic Series, riders can
choose either 50 miles or double it to complete 100. Expect the usual
bottleneck start before sorting through the pack once the trail narrows. The first 27 miles is ridden on continuously undulating trails
before coming to the seven-mile service road climb to reach the
race’s highest elevation of 2,400'. From the summit the route transforms into a fast and technical descent, complete with off-camber
switchbacks and big disorganized roots to maneuver through, before
bottoming out at Pine Creek, where a short but steep climb awaits.
From there it’s a rapid ride down Green Line #6, an amazing section
to hammer out the remaining miles back to the finish. To finish:
Proper nutrition, hydration and a steady pace. To place: A consistent
pace and no crashes. To win: Endurance legs and lungs, no mechanicals, and the ability to suffer more than your competitors.

track olympic hopefuls
Zach Bell
(N.Vancouver, BC / Team SpiderTech)
With the 2011 Omnium World Cup title in hand
and multiple World Cup victories, Zach Bell has
already secured his place for the Olympics. His
sights are now set on leading the Canadian contingent at the Games and claiming gold as he races
around the London track.
Jennie Reed
(Seattle, WA / Ouch)
After years of going
at it alone racing Sprint
and Keirin events on
the international scene,
the 2008 World Keirin
Champion Jennie Reed
is now taking a group
approach as she hopes
to carve out a spot for
herself on the Team
Pursuit squad and
clinch a berth to her
third Olympic games.

Laura Brown
(Vancouver, BC / Dr. Vie Superfoods)
The competition for a spot on the Team
Pursuit crew is intense, and this endurance rider
is vying for one of them. A multi-talented rider
with multiple international podiums, including a
silver at Worlds, she can also ride the Scratch and
the Pursuit.
Tela Crane (Sammamish, WA)
Is on the long list for the Team Sprint event.
She is considered a long-short for these Olympics.
Kevin Mansker
(Portland, OR / Project London 2012)
Mansker will be a force to reckon with for a
spot on the national team, as the Project London
2012 rider grabbed a Team Sprint seventh place
finish at the 2011 Cali World Cup. Combine that
with his Keirin and Sprint results on the world
stage, Mansker could be multi-tasking in London.

Also looking to join the team pursuit squad is
the talented Roorda. She shares many international successes with teammate Laura Brown and

2011 was a fantastic
year for Tracy, as he
became the co-holder
