Thermit® Welding – Live Demo & Presentation
DATE: Wednesday
September 17, 2014
“How do we weld rail road tracks? – A training overview”
Speaker: Randy Dry, Orgo Thermit, Inc.
SPECIAL LOCATION & TIME:
Exothermic Welding, also known as Thermit® Welding,
was developed by Professor Hans Goldschmidt around
1895. In exothermic welding, a chemical reaction is used to
obtain: a). Free elemental iron that is alloyed to produce a
steel of defined chemical composition. b). Aluminum oxide,
which is less dense that the steel, floats on top of the steel as
a slag. c). A large amount of heat is released that melts the
parts to be joined.
G. Cotter Enterprises
48 Brown Avenue
Springfield, NJ 07081
www.gcotter.com
PROGRAM:
4:30 p.m. Executive Meeting
5:30 p.m. Buffet Dinner
6:00 p.m. Presentation
The chemical reaction that produces the heat is an exothermic reaction between
aluminum powder and a metal oxide.
Thermit® is a registered trademark, and Thermit® welding is widely used all
over the world to weld railway rails. One of the first rail roads in the USA to evaluate the use of Thermit® welding was the Delaware Hudson in 1935.
To obtain sound railway welds, the ends of the rails to be Thermit® welded are
preheated with a preheating burner to an orange heat, to ensure the molten steel is
not chilled during the pouring process.
A live demonstration of the Thermit® welding process will emphasize the suitability of the process for welding rail road tracks.
DINNER COST:
Members & Guests: $ 15.00
Students:
$ 7.50

School of Technology, the MCST AWS Student Chapter, and the AWS New
Jersey Section for supporting this activity.
Professional Development Hours —
Yours for the Taking!
One of the additional benefits of attending AWS NJ Section meetings is that
you can earn credits toward professional development hours (PDHS) just by
attending them.
This is very valuable and convenient for those whose careers require continuing education. It is especially important to Welding Instructors and Certified
Welding Inspectors. They can be applied toward the hours needed for Instructor certifications or nine year CWI re-certifications.
Certificates are given out right at the meetings.
November 11-13 in Atlanta
North America's largest combination metal forming, fabricating,
welding and finishing event will be
held at the Georgia World Congress
Center, 285 Andrew Young Int’l
Blvd. NW, Atlanta GA,
Over 1500 exhibitors are expected
to cover more than 500,000 square
feet throughout the A., B, and C
buildings of the Congress. Over 100
educational sessions and presentations will also be held. 27,000 attendees are anticipated.
