CALMRA’S MISSION: to improve the lives of persons with developmental disabilities by providing
the highest quality residential and other support services in an ethical and loving environment.
Letter From the President
I would like to express my
deepest sympathy to Nancy on the loss of her husband, Fred. Fred always
supported Nancy and
CALMRA and he will be
sorely missed by the entire organization.
Summer is here and it's
time to think about vacations and spending time
with families. I hope everyone has the opportunity
to do something fun and
exciting this season. I look
forward to hearing about
the many places visited by
our residents and staff.
The Board of Directors
has decided to meet every
other month instead of
monthly. Rest assured
that we are still doing
what needs to be done for
CALMRA, and if any major
issues arise, they will be
addressed immediately.
The annual picnic was
once again a huge success.
Dave Saville
President, 2016
Thanks to the entire planning committee, volunteers, and, of course,
Lefty's Barbecue for the
delicious food.
The annual dinner/auction
is coming up on October
8th. (Cont’d. on next pg.)

From the Executive Director’s Desk
Nancy Tolbert,
Executive Director
This has been a particularly trying time for me
on both a personal and
professional level. I want
to thank everyone from
my CALMRA family for
their love, support, and
prayers as I said goodbye
to my dear husband.
Fred was a big CALMRA
supporter throughout
our whole marriage.
Thank you for your understanding as I attempt
to make my life work
without him.
On a professional level,
we were all extremely
disappointed that the
Prince George’s County
elected officials allocated
NOTHING to us to help
meet the higher minimum wage they legislated. We worked hard to
convince them of their
responsibility to help in
this matter. It was doubly
disappointing to find out
that the County has a
surplus and will be get-
ting additional funds from
the MGM Casino that is
soon to open.
CALMRA staff and supporters were there to
congratulate them both.
We are facing hard times
with major increases in
employee health insurance as well as our other
insurance coverages.
Please speak to your
Council persons and Mr.
Baker if you have the
chance and advocate for
living wages for our wonderful staff.
Finally, CALMRA welcomes Valencia Hawkins
to the administrative
team. Valencia has taken
over Peter’s caseload as
Program Administrator,
and we hope for a mutual beneficial relationship.
On a lighter note, the
CALMRA Picnic was a
great success and we
send big high-fives to the
planning committee
headed by Sheila Saville.
Everyone worked hard
so the day was fun for
all!!
Also, on June 23rd we
honored Sara and Austin
Henry for their successful grant-writing and volunteer efforts on behalf
of CALMRA. Sixteen
There is no doubt we
have an uphill climb in
front of us. I believe with
our dedicated staff, committed Board and supportive friends and families, we can make it
through by working together.

Liz Labukas Tree Dedication April 17, 2016
On April 17, 2016, the family of Liz Labukas, who passed away last spring,
held a tree dedication to honor her memory. A rosebud tree was planted on
the side of the Greenbelt Community Center near the Greenbelt Nursery
School where Liz had worked for more than 33 years. Over 30 friends and
family attended, including her housemates Lois Funk and Julie Kenney, her
CLS Audra Mitchell, and house staff Elfreda Musa. After the ceremony refreshments were served and included Liz’s favorite donuts and soda.

MACS Direct Support & Supervision Conference
April 25-27, 2016
The MACS (Maryland Association of Community Services) Annual Direct Support & Supervision Conference, held
in Ocean City, MD, brings together direct support professionals from all over the state of Maryland to celebrate
their work and identify current and future professional roles as well as challenges in the industry.
Our Susquehanna House Manager, Shenekwa Hutchinson, was nominated by
CALMRA for a Direct Support award due to her amazing efforts with one of her
residents, Patricia Fox (who also won an Achievement Award from MACS). Patricia came to Susquehanna from another home as she was experiencing behavior
challenges and needed a different environment. Shenekwa worked diligently with
Patricia in order to improve her behavior outcomes, and by taking her time and
showing great care and compassion, Patricia was able to improve significantly.
Shenekwa is attentive to all of her residents, is caring and knowledgeable about
their issues and health status, and works hard to maintain their safety and overall
well-being. She is loved and trusted by both her residents and their families, and
we congratulate Shenekwa for her Direct Support nomination!

MACS Achievement Awards May 19, 2016
Our resident, Patricia Fox from Susquehanna House,
recently received a MACS award for her achievements
this year. Patricia, who goes by “Patty,” is “63-yearsyoung” and a very loving, caring and helpful person who
smiles easily, especially with her staff and housemates.
She enjoys chatting with her friends in order to catch
up on life events and adventures, and she readily shares
with them her words of wisdom. One of her housemates says of Patty, “I like Patty, because we color, do
our nails and she always talks to me and helps me.”
Patty is always up for an excursion, whether it is to a
department store, nature center, library, sailing center,
county fair, or restaurant. If it gets her moving and she
can be with her friends, Patty will not say no. She also
loves any excuse to get dressed up and get her nails and hair done!
You would not know it now, but when Patty first moved to her CALMRA home, she had a hard time adjusting to
the new place, new rules and new people. Early on, there were times when she would display aggressive behaviors
towards her peers and staff, but through her behavior plan and the persistence of staff, Patty now only shows compassion and loving attitudes towards those she interacts with. She waits her turn when speaking to others, takes initiative to keep her area and common areas clean, and volunteers to assist with making dinners. She asks permission to
touch something she admires rather than just taking another’s belongings. It has been amazing to see the tremendous
change in Patty’s spirit over time.
Patty is a wonderful addition to the CALMRA family. She is loved by her peers as well as the staff members. From
everyone at CALMRA, we would like to take this opportunity to recognize Patty for being
the loving and caring person she truly is!
“The roots of
true achievement lie in the
will to become
the best that
you can
become.”

CALMRA Annual Picnic June 4, 2016
On June 4th, our CALMRA residents, staff and families gathered for our annual
company picnic. We were all so happy that Lefty’s Barbeque came back to cater
the delicious food! We extend a special thanks to Mrs. Greenhouse and her family for catering the event.
We were so lucky to have beautiful weather this year (sunny and mild) and everyone seemed to be having a good time socializing, laughing, playing games and
dancing. We played water toss relay games, a Tic Tack Toe game with colors,
corn in the hole and gave press-on tattoos to those that wanted them. A big
“thank you” to Eniola, Shams daughter, for helping with the tattoos! She was awesome!
Finally, we also had our favorite event at the picnic: the dance competition! We
all know how much our folks love to dance, and this year was no exception. As
you can see from the pictures below, we had a lot of contestants for the dance
contest and many happy winners. Thank you Nancy, Bethy and Shenekwa for
volunteering as our judges!
We at CALMRA would like to thank everyone on the Picnic Committee for making this event such a fun time. We could not have done it without you guys, and
we look forward to next year’s picnic!

MACS Annual Meeting & Volunteer Recognition
PAGE
June 23, 2016
Every year, the MACS
non-profit organization
hosts a meeting of its
board members and various service providers.
The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the yearly gains and challenges of
the organization, which
advocates for individuals
with developmental disabilities along with their
support organizations and
staff. During the meeting,
guests celebrate the
many volunteers who
have made a difference in
the developmental disability community, and this
year, Sara and Austin
Henry were recipients of
the Volunteer Recognition Award.
Sara Henry became involved with CALMRA,
Inc. when the agency was
just a dream and an idea
and was one of the folks
who created the concept
for the agency. Sara has a
sister with an intellectual
disability, and that is
where her drive and impetus for help began. She
began her efforts to help
people with cognitive
disabilities at age 8 by
defending her sister from
an elementary school
bully.
After some time away to
pursue career demands
as a scientist with the
Food and Drug Administration, Sara once again
came back to assist in
CALMRA’s efforts. As a
board member, she
helped with the Quality
Assurance Committee
and then took over as
the Chair of the Fundraising committee. In this
position, Sarah was able
to bring in various grants
and donations to help
CALMRA in its service
efforts. She, along with
her husband Austin, are
still at it today!
Austin and Sara prepared proposals for two
whole house generators
(which were funded) and
are working on a third!
They also obtained funding for a wheelchair
ramp and have taken
over the administration
of CALMRA’s annual
gifts solicitation campaign.
For their help and volunteer efforts, CALMRA
sends big heartfelt
thanks and appreciation!
After 15 years as an engineer, Austin Henry
served for 25 years as
Manager /Director for
several large non-profit
associations. Since his
retirement, he has continued his efforts for non

BRANCH VIEW
Greetings from Branch
View, and happy summer to
everyone! We have had
some changes in our home
since last quarter; in April
we said “goodbye” to our
friend and housemate, Paul.
3
While Paul has moved on
to another agency, it almost feels as though he is
still with us. This is because Paul has sleepovers
with us on the weekends
and we all still have a
great time as if he never
left.
In other news, Kevin &
Wade visited Greencastle
in May for Gabby's birthday party and cookout.
We all had a great time

crew! Then in June
CALMRA has hosted another annual picnic, and,
as always, it was a wonderful event. There was
dancing, food, something
for everyone, and most
importantly
"togetherness.”
Kevin continues to enjoy
eating out, going on long
rides and jamming to his
music. Wade still enjoys
coloring and eating out.
13
The guys continue to
have fun on outings together like going out
dancing, going to cookouts, watching movies,
going fishing, visiting and
being around friends, and
most of all, going to the
pool and relaxing in the
hot tub. Remember: If
you don't do anything else
this summer, make sure
to have a whole lot of

From Our Nurse: Foodborne Illnesses
by Mary Ellen Denny
to several days
FOODBORNE
ILLNESSES
Foodborne illnesses are
infections or irritations of
the gastrointestinal (GI)
tract caused by food or
beverages that contain
harmful bacteria, parasites,
viruses, or chemicals. Common symptoms of foodborne illnesses include
vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, and
chills. The food may already
be contaminated or it can
also be contaminated by
someone who has bacteria
or viruses on their hands
when handling food.
Most foodborne illnesses
are acute, meaning that
they happen suddenly and
last a short time, and most
people recover on their
own without treatment.
Rarely, however, foodborne
illnesses may lead to more
serious complications. Each
year, an estimated 48 million people in the United
States experience a foodborne illness, and these illnesses cause about 3,000
deaths in the United States
annually. Symptoms of
foodborne illnesses depend
on the cause, can range
from mild to serious, and
can last from a few hours
Anyone can get a foodborne illness. However,
some people are more
likely to develop foodborne illnesses than others, including infants and
children, pregnant women and their fetuses, older adults, and people with
weak immune systems.
These groups also have a
greater risk of developing
severe symptoms or
complications of foodborne illnesses.
which a person is not
conscious.
COMPLICATIONS
Some foodborne illnesses
lead to other serious
complications. For example, C. botulinum and certain chemicals in fish and
seafood can cause symptoms such as headache,
tingling or numbness of
the skin, blurred vision,
weakness, dizziness and
paralysis of the muscles
that control breathing. L.

may lead to chronic discoma—a sleeplike state in orders. One such disor-
der is reactive arthritis, a
type of joint inflammation
that usually affects the
knees, ankles, or feet.
Some people develop this
disorder following foodborne illnesses caused by
certain bacteria, including
C. jejuni and Salmonella.
Reactive arthritis usually
lasts fewer than 6
months, but this condition may recur or become chronic arthritis.4
Another foodbornerelated disorder is irritable bowel syndrome
(IBS), a disorder that is
associated with abdominal
pain, bloating, and diarrhea or constipation or
both. Foodborne illnesses
caused by bacteria increase the risk of developing IBS.
Guillain-Barré syndrome

TREATMENT
People with any of the following symptoms should
see a health care provider
immediately:

signs of dehydration
prolonged vomiting

 diarrhea for more than
2 days in adults or for
more than 24 hours in children
 severe pain in the ab-

domen or rectum
 a fever higher than
101 degrees
 stools containing
blood or pus
 stools that are black
and tarry
 nervous system symptoms
 signs of HUS
If a child has a foodborne
illness, parents or guardians should not hesitate to
call a health care provider
for advice.
The only treatment needed for most foodborne
illnesses is replacing lost
fluids and electrolytes to
prevent dehydration.
Over-the-counter medications such as
loperamide (Imodium)
and bismuth subsalicylate
(Pepto-Bismol and
Kaopectate) may help
stop diarrhea in adults.
However, people with
bloody diarrhea—a sign
of bacterial or parasitic
infection—should not use
these medications. If diarrhea is caused by bacteria
or parasites, over-thecounter medications may
prolong the problem. If

the specific cause of the
foodborne illness is diagnosed, a health care provider may prescribe medications, such as antibiotics, to treat the illness. In
worst-case scenarios,
hospitalization may be
required to treat life
threatening symptoms
and complications, such
as paralysis, severe dehydration, and HUS.

The mission of CALMRA, Inc. is to improve the
lives of persons with cognitive disabilities by
providing the highest quality residential, day
and other support services in an ethical and
loving environment.
It is the goal of CALMRA to ensure that each person
who has a cognitive disability has the opportunity to
live his/her life in a manner which is as close to normal
as his/her disability allows. This includes assuring that
the services which are needed to help individuals are
available and accessible and that they operate in a way
that meets the individual's needs while offering him/
her the freedom, dignity, and respect to which he/she
is entitled. To accomplish this, CALMRA works with
governmental agencies, private agencies, and providers
of generic and specialized services to develop and provide services which are not otherwise available.
CALMRA's ultimate goal is to assure that each person
who has a cognitive disability has the opportunity to
be fully integrated as an equal partner into the community at large.
