For years “Golf” and “Gaming” have gone
together and has been one of the little secrets
that have attracted avid golfers to the northern
part of our great state.
First of all, northern golf courses in
Michigan are unique, challenging and offer
some of the most scenic views you can ever
imagine, add the relaxed northern atmosphere
and it turns into something very special.
Little Traverse Bay Golf Club comes to
mind when you talk about scenic views along
with Greywalls in Marquette, Arcadia Bluffs
in Arcadia, The Hills Course at Boyne,
Hawk’s Eye Golf Club in Bellaire and Wild
Bluff in Brimley, just to mention a few.
By the same standards, “Southern
Michigan” offers some of the greatest courses
in the state as well. Gull Lake View Resort,
Stonehedge, Bedford Valley in Augusta,
Yarrow Golf and Conference Center in
Augusta, Eagle Eye/Hawk Hollow in Bath,
The Medalist in Marshall and Angel’s
Crossing in Vicksburg which all offer scenic
views and challenging venues, too.
They also offer the opportunity to stay closer to home and the attraction of metropolitan
treasures that many people enjoy as well.
Baseball games, zoos, museums and shopping malls are a desired culture by many.
Whether you are an avid tournament player
or just an avid golfer, golf is the first thing on
your agenda but frequently the golfer looks at
the other attractions in the area when they
plan their weekend or two- to five-day golf
excursions.
The Medalist ~ Marshall
Gull Lake View ~ Augusta
Quite often gaming is part of the consideration and Petoskey, Traverse City, Manistee,
Brimley, Escanaba, Marquette and Mount
Pleasant have all enjoyed how these pleasures
have blended together to attract customers.
Southeast and Southwest Michigan added
casinos over the last few years but seldom do
you hear avid golfers say they are headed to
Detroit or Benton Harbor on a three- or fourday golf excursion.
Now some of the great golf locations here in
South Central Michigan will have a casino,
“FireKeepers Casino in Battle Creek,” that
will influence travel plans.
FireKeepers had their grand opening in
early August and based on the early indicators
it’s been very well accepted. Traffic jams,
packed parking lots and busy slot machines
seem to tell the story. Granted, it’s very early
to tell whether people are just trying to get a
peek of this beautiful new casino or if it will
be the new destination of choice for cars that
normally travel in a different direction.
Gull Lake View Resort and the Scott family have a long and highly regarded history
in the golf business, offering fantastic
venues. Yarrow Golf and Conference
Center came on the scene and
has built a nice reputation for
their facility.
Osprey
Properties has
The Medalist in
Marshall, which is highly
regarded for its challenging layout.
Eagle Eye Golf Club and Hawk Hallow are
located a short drive to the north near our
state capitol.
All of these courses have something else in
common. They frequently host USGA,
Michigan PGA, Publinx, GAM, Meijer and
Adams tournament events. That’s a great testimony to the type of courses and conditions
you will find at these locations.
In addition to these locations, there are
many more courses located throughout the
area. Binder Park Golf Course offers an excellent 27-hole treasure located on the back of
the Binder Park Zoo complex.
Eagle Eye ~ Bath
When you think about your next trip, spend
some time and visit the websites of these
great locations or if you prefer to have some
help with your travel plans, Golfing In
Michigan or Michigan Southern Swing
would be a good place to start.
We hope you enjoy your trip to
South Central Michigan!

Here is a great drill that I learned from my good friend, Mr. Jim Flick, Top 6
Instructor in the world. Simply hit balls with your back turned to the target. This
back to target drill will help teach you an anti-slice release and the correct feeling
needed through impact:
• Start with a short iron and progress to the driver. With a ball teed, set up so
your back faces the target. A line across your toes would almost be perpendicular
to the target line. Swing the club back, then, keeping your feet where they were at
address, swing through. You’ll feel your right hand aggressively turning over your
left through impact. Key on your hands and arms working together through
impact, the ball should start to the right and curve back to your target.
• As you continue this drill and create a repetition of the correct feel with arms
and hands, then mix in regular shots every third swing. As time goes on, you should

2009 State Match Play Action at Glen Eagle Golf Club
Michigan PGA Junior
Tour Championship
The Michigan PGA Junior Tour ended the
year in fine fashion with great scores and exciting finishes at the Tour Championship at The
Fortress in Frankenmuth, Mich. In the Boys
16-18 division, it took a playoff between
Henry Do from Ypsilanti and Derek Roe of
Portland to decide the winner. With Henry
playing the 18th hole, he knew that he had to
make birdie to tie Derek who carded a 65 (-7)
under that day making him (-3) for the tournament. Henry's 15 foot birdie putt hung on the
lip for a second and then dropped in, all in
front of the large crowd on 18. Henry went on
to defeat Derek in the first playoff hole, giving
him the title. Tyler DeGood of Grand Ledge
took home the Player of the Year honors in this
division for his outstanding play all year.
In the Boys 13-15 division, it also took a
playoff to decide the winner. Charlie Green
from Ann Arbor shot a 68 on Friday, giving
him a (-3) under total for the tournament, tying
him with Brandon Barrows of Lake Orion
who shot 69 on Thursday and 72 on Friday. It
only took one hole as Brandon birdied the first
playoff hole, giving him the title in the Boys
13-15. The Player of the Year in this division
was Donald Burke from Lansing.
Devon Compton of Rochester took the top
honors in the Girls 16-18 division. Devon shot
a 74 on Thursday and a 79 on Friday, which
was good enough for a three shot victory over
Brandi Studer of Essexville. Erin Peavy of
Battle Creek took home the Player of the Year
award.
In the Girls 13-15 division, Katie Brown of
Lakeside shot a 84 on Thursday and a 88 on
Friday which gave her a three shot victory over
Jacqueline Setas of East Lansing. Katie also
won the Player of the Year in this division for
her outstanding play all year.

88th GAM Championship – Travis Pointe Country Club
Ann Arbor, Michigan ~ 8/10/2009 - 8/11/2009
Eighty-four top Michigan amateur players competed for the Golf
Association of Michigan Championship in Ann Arbor Mich.
The defending champion, Jimmy Chestnut, was in the field along with
all the big names in Michigan. Tom Werkmeister, the current Michigan
Amateur Champion and Horton Smith Champion, would like to make a
sweep of all the major titles this season but he will have to contend with
the likes of Greg Davies, Bill Zylstra, Jason May, Russ Cunningham and
Randy Lewis along with a number of players who are very capable of
capturing the title.
The first day was a long and important day as they played 36 holes to
determine the top 30 players who will compete in the final round of 18
holes for the championship.
The first round found a number of players going low and tied for the
lead with rounds of 69. Russ Cunningham, Casey Baker and Jeff
Champine are the most recognized names shooting 69 along with a two
other players who are relatively unknown, Christopher Mory and James
Petty.
Close behind at two shots back (71) was a number of other top players, Bill Zylstra, Kevin Klemet, Eric Spencer and Ryan Johnson.
When the second round concluded, the leader board changed a bit but
it was pretty impressive with several top players within a few shots.
Christopher Mory was the leader firing his second consecutive round of
69 to maintain a one shot lead over Cunningham.

88th GAM Championship – Travis Pointe Country Club
Ann Arbor, Michigan ~ 8/10/2009 - 8/11/2009 (continued)
Missing from the final round action was a list of some pretty impressive
players, Werkmeister, Chestnut, May, Ignasiak, Ellis, Gizzarelli, Lilleboe
and Quitiquit which is a testimony to the number of very good amateur
players we have in the state of Michigan.
Final round action found Drew Preston making his bid for the title,
shooting the tournament low round of 66 giving Drew a final score of
213. Drew started the final round tied for 20th and would be the leader in
the clubhouse until the final group finished.
Mory continued his stellar play and wouldn’t stumble a bit firing another excellent round of 71 to lead the tournament from beginning to end.
Christopher would take the 88th GAM Championship with a final score
of 209, four shots ahead of a group of players who tied for the runner-up
position!

T/F
3.
A player is in doubt whether his ball lay on a cart path that was
an obstruction or an integral part of the course. He announced
that he would play two balls and stated that he wanted the ball he
played after taking relief from the cart path to count. He played
both balls into the hole and he scored 5 with both balls. The
player did not tell the committee that he played two balls because
he scored the same with both balls. There was no penalty.

7.
The 7:40 group is on the first tee and cannot play because of a

the tee and is no disqualified even though he was more than 5
minutes late.
T/F
Mike’s ball is on the putting green. He takes his wedge and lays
in on the fringe beyond the hole to line up his putt. He places
the club down and then proceeds to putt. As he did not touch the
putting green, he does not incur a penalty.

5.
A group is held-up in the fairway of the 6th hole because the
group ahead of them has to wait for a Ruling. Jack drops a ball in
the fairway and putts a few times to kill time. Jack is penalized.
8.
Joe and Paul’s ball lie equidistant from the hole. Joe has a range
finder and checks his yardage. Paul asks Joe what distance does
he have. Joe says 156 yards to the flag. There is no penalty to
either player.
T/F
9.
A player has addressed the ball in a bunker when he has taken
his stance.
T/F
10. Mike’s ball lay on a gravel covered road. Because it is artificially

Eagle Glenn Golf Club
(Farwell, Mich.) and The Pines
Golf Club (Lake Isabella) have
hosted this wonderful event for
several years and both Dean
Paesens and Joe Schumer had
their courses in great condition.
Heavy rain was a factor this
year during the qualifying, creating delays, but between Joe,
Dean, their staffs and the tournament committee, they were able
to get the championship completed on time.
After two days and 36 holes of
qualifying, Jason May emerged as
the number one seed and the
“Medalist” in the Open Division.
Jason shot fine rounds of 66 and
70 for a total score of 136.
Congratulations, Jason!
Capturing the other top seeds in
the championship division were
Greg Davies, Ray Emsley and
Jonathan Pauli.
In the Senior Division, Larry
Hogard worked his magic over 36
holes to capture “The Medalist
Honors” with rounds of 72 and 70
for a total score of 172. Rounding
out the top four seeds would be
Matt Wiley, Don Savich and Mike
Grace.
The next two and half days was
non-stop action of match play

duos where winners moved on
and the losers turned into spectators or went home.
The Open Championship final
was a classic “match play battle”.
Luigi Spadafora (Milford, Mich.)
and Greg Davies (defending
champion) from W. Bloomfield
put on quite a show to determine
the 2009 champion.
Right from the first hole, the
action was exciting. Luigi hit his
approach shot on one to a couple
of inches for a sure birdie and
what could be an early one up
lead “but” Davies hit his approach
shot in the hole for a eagle and

took the lead.
This battle went back and forth
the entire match with both players
taking turns holding the lead. At
the end of 12 holes, the match was
dead even again leaving six holes
for Luigi or Greg to take control.
The par five 13th seemed like a
good hole to start and Luigi hit his
tee shot in the heavy heather
rough, giving Greg the advantage
to take the lead, which he eventually did.
On the 14th hole, Greg would
find the fairway with his tee shot
and Luigi would find the heather
again, only this time Luigi hit a

tremendous shot very close to the
cup where Greg would concede
the birdie and eventually the hole
to put the match back to even.
The 15th hole found the same
kind of action with Luigi in trouble after his approach shot and
Greg taking the hole to go back up
one in the match.
Luigi would birdie the 16th hole
to bring the match back to even,
leaving the 17th and 18th holes to
determine the winner or they
would have to play extra holes.
The 17th hole is a par three
where both players found the putting surface with their tee shots.
Sunday
Luigi would two-putt for par
while Greg made bogie giving
Luigi a one up lead going into the
last hole.
Both players hit excellent tee
shots on the final hole, which you
would expect considering the caliber of players that Greg and
Luigi have become. Greg hit the
first approach-shot to this twotiered green, which appeared to be
perfect and on the right tier but it
rolled just off the back of the
green. Luigi would hit his shot left
of the green giving both players a
difficult third shot to be in posiContinued on next page

to make bogie, giving Luigi his
first
State

Play
Championship.
This is just an example of one of
the many matches that took place
this week and the competitive golf
that Michigan Publinx Golf
Association has developed in this
great tournament.
To win your division, you have
to play five days of good golf and
probably have a little good luck
going your way. The tournament
started with 220 players who

Final
eventually, after 36-holes of qualifying, would be seated in one of
the six match play brackets (three
Open Divisions or three Senior
Divisions).
Bob Dexter would capture his
first Senior Championship title by
defeating the senior medalist and
the number one seed Larry
Hogard from Flint, Mich. Bob and
Larry both have been very competitive in this event for years but
always seemed to finish behind a
very well known player by the
name of Bill McDonald. Bob won
his match three and two, closing
Larry out on the 16th hole.
In the Senior First Flight
Tues.AM
Mon PM

Division, Jim Novar (Lake
Isabella, Mich.), another top senior player in this tournament for
years, would do battle against Jeff
Barnes (Columbiaville, Mich.)
and this match went right down to
the wire with Jeff capturing the
title on the last hole one up.
The Senior Second Flight was
another classic with David Allen
(Clare,
Mich.)
defeating
Guadagni Donato (Hartland,
Mich.) two up and capturing his
first match play title.
Open First Flight and Second
Flight found more competitive
final round action with both winners defeating their opponents
Sunday
three and two to capture their trophies. In the first flight, Motis
Cesar (Clinton Twp., Mich.)
defeated
Steven
Ponke
(Farmington Hills, Mich.) and in
the second flight Evan Woolford
(Holly, Mich.) would top Bostick
Daniel (Livonia, Mich.).
The Michigan Publinx Golf
Association would like to congratulate each of the winners and
thank every player who participated in this great event along with
the volunteers and the staffs at
Eagle Glenn and The Pines.

The Midwest Junior Championship sponsored by Syntel was exciting from start to finish. Heavy rain showers delayed the first round
by one hour, but once the clouds cleared it was
a wonderful two days for students to play
championship golf at Treetops Resort in
Gaylord, Mich.
The Smith Tradition (70) and the very hilly
Fazio Premiere (72) combined par for 142 provided a challenge for this year's strong field of
players. Both courses averaging 6,500 yards,
along with windy conditions gave the students
all they could handle as no one broke par this
year.
There were lots of great memories for everyone and one special memory for Kosta
Ramirez, as he becomes the 2009 Midwest
Junior Champion. Kosta posted a solid 74 and
72, 146 total, to lead more than 110 players. He
is a graduating senior from Dearborn and he
can't think of a better way to finish his high
school and Top 50 Junior Tour career. Kosta
says, "My golf instructor has been telling me
that I have the ability to win for the last two
years, but I have been struggling mentally and I
haven't been able to break through." Kosta
credits his golf instructor, Danny Thomas at
Fox Hills Learning Center, for making him
train more effectively and find the confidence
to win a major tournament.
Kosta's 146 total was followed by Jake
Worthington posting
148 and Matthew
Sheperd 149. This is Jake Worthington's fourth
season with the Top 50 Junior Tour and he has
gone from a good player to a great player
according to Scot Brown the Central Tour Zone
Director. Also impressive is Matthew Sheperd's
second third-place finish at the Midwest Junior
Championship in the last two years.
Another proud moment during the championship belongs to Ryan Thomas as he won the
Boys 15 and Under Division in "come back"
fashion. Ryan struggled in the first round and
posted 82 +12, which put him in 19th place and
seemingly out of contention. Ryan was undeterred as he shot -3 on his front nine, and fin-
ished the second round level par at 72, for a
total 154 and the title. Also gaining significant
ground on the field was Jimmy Delnick as he
improved five shots to finish second with a total
score of 157. Mike Engelman finished third at
157.
It was an exciting start to the championship
for the Girls 16 and Older Division with three
girls on top the leader board after day one, with
less than one shot separating the trio; Jennifer
Elsholz (78), Michelle Hall (79) and Marni
Weinstein (79). The leader board remained
tight during the last round with Jennifer Elsholz
posting a 159 to maintain her first round lead to
capture the title. Michelle Hall (161) held her
first day position to finish second and Emily
Rohdy gained on the field to secure her second
third-place finish in two years.
Aya Johnson captured the Girls 15 and Under
Division title by leading wire-to-wire by posting a consistent 85 and 86 for a total 171.
Challengers Baily Cockerill (177) finished second, and Taylor Gould (180) finished third.
