For those of you accustomed to my letters in this magazine, you’ll notice a new style. It has been asked by many people for me to address some of the high points of the show. So you’ll find below a brief summary. This is a special show on two fronts: one it is truly unique. You’re really watching a show within a show that happens to be about a musical theater fan. Second, it’s the final show of our 2014 regular season. I say this because we really regard the Christmas show as a special event. Whether it’s Christmas Carole or White Christmas or whatever we dream up next, this show has sold out for more than 20 years and certainly will again this year. There is only one level of season partnership that includes the Christmas Show. Alhambra insiders know to buy this package or buy your seats early. Our very exciting 2015 season (our 48th!) is now on sale, so please consider supporting this wonderful theater by becoming a Season Partner. In addition to saving some money and guaranteeing yourself a great seat and a great night out, you’ll find a host of new Partner Perks like the ability to skip the check-in line and a personal concierge to take care of your needs. So…The Drowsy Chaperone is a musical, and a parody of American musical comedy of the 1920s. The story is about a middle-aged, social musical theater fan as he plays the record of his favorite musical, the (fictional) 1928 hit The Drowsy Chaperone. The show comes to life onstage as he wryly comments on the music, story, and actors. The Drowsy Chaperone debuted in 1998 at The Rivoli in Toronto and opened on Broadway on May 1, 2006. The show was nominated for multiple Broadway (2006) and London (2008) theatre awards, winning five Tony Awards and seven Drama Desk Awards. The show has had major productions in Toronto, Los Angeles, New York, London, and Japan, as well as two North American tours. The concept that the audience is listening to the musical on an old LP record is used throughout the show. As The Man in the Chair listens to the show, he is torn between his desire to absorb every moment of the show as it unfolds versus his need to insert his personal footnotes and his extensive-but-trivial knowledge of musical performances and actors, as he frequently brings the audience in and out of the fantasy. As the show goes on, through his musings about the show, more of his personal life is revealed, until, as the record ends, he is left again alone in his apartment – but still with his record of a long-beloved show to turn to whenever he’s blue. And isn’t that what theater is all about? Helping you escape your day-to-day routine by providing an oasis of music, comedy, dance and drama? Thank you for being here. I look forward to seeing a lot more of you in 2015.
