She vas a regular on the last season of the medical drama 8e, Ca.rey (1965-66), costarrcd in dle detective series Longstrcet (1911-72), and starred opposite Elvis Presley in the 1969 film, fhe Troubie wih Girls. She lives in Oregon. does Hoga's Heroes stand out among your body ofwork? HHFC: ls that how you happened to get Marlyn lvlason: I'm exceptionally fond of MM: HIIFC: How 'Six Lessons from Madame LaGrange' because I got a chance to sing. And Robert Clary choreographed a terrific song and dance routine for me. He wasjust wonderful, he volunteered ... because the director said, 'Oh, just do what you want' and I thought, 'I don't krow, what am I going to do here?' And Robert just happened to be on the set and he said, 'Oh I'll put it together for you.' In like ten minutes he choreographed this nunber. And Ijust have very lond memories of it. It was a funny show. At the time I was going with the Vice President of Bing Crosby Productions, which produced Hogan's Heroes. cast in the role? No, I think I would have gotten it anlnvay. I had worked a lot at Paramount, and right next door was Desilu, which is the lot they shot -Flogar,'s on. When you work at a studio over and over, you kind ofget to know people. I'm assuming it was my talent that got me the partl But it was just the perfect role for me. I never got a chance to do much singing and dancing in television. other than a couple of specials, so it was a lot offun. EEFC: You played the same character in two differ€nt episodes during the last season. Do you think that ifthe show had continued, it would have become a recuring role? lvlll: Oh, I doubt it, because it wasn't a woman's show. They might have brought me back occasionally, I don't know. HHFC: What HEFC: By the time you guest-starred on the show, the cast and crew had been togerher lor five years. We.e they welcoming to the guest starc? was the atmosphere like on the set? NIM: It was always good. Partly because Bob Crane played drums. When the crew was setting up to do a scene, there was always music on, and he would play drums. It kind of made you feel good. I think it was looked at with a wary eye at first, ftom what I've heard, and they didn't think that was going to work, but the crew ended up loving it. As I recall it was big band music. so it was real easy and just kept you kind of lighthearted. And I think it kept him relaxed. Other than that, I just remember there was lots of laughter on the set. And Ed Feldman, who was the producer, was a very classy man, I adored him- Everybody was very professional, and knevr' what they needed to do. They were all just wonderful guys. lVIilI: Oh yes, yes. Definitely. Any show I've done where you come irl as a guest person on a show... I've never experienced unfriendliness. You become part of the family very quickly. EEFC: Do you have any oth€r favorites among your other Iilm or TV roles? MM: Oh gosh, they're all my favorite at the time I'm doing th€m. I'd have to say a Hallmark Hall of Fame I did with peter Ustinov k Slorm in Summer'1. Aad, two specials I did with Robert Goltlet, Caroasel and Brigadoon. I did Bob Newhart's shoq I have very fond memories ofthat. I played Tom Poston's gidAiend. And I had a teeny, tiny part in the very last Dlnasty. and then rhey canceled the show. lcontinued next page] MM: I don't know what my involvement I That would have been a recurring role: that would have been nice And of course the se.ies that I did, Longstreet. I never think in terms of favorites. When I think ofa particular show I had to do with that generally have a fond memory. HHFC: What have you been up to lately? MlVI: Since I've been in O.egon, I've done two movies. One called Dedd by Sunset, IM But up here, I've got a gal who is on the gun all the time. She calls me arld says 'get up here tomorrow, you'\,e got an interview.' The two movies have turned out good so far. And I think Lifetime is coming back in the beginning of next year to do some more, so maybe I'll get some more work. And it's beautiful up here. In lect, I dread going back to L.A., unless it's for work. Life is good. I love it here, I never lcontinuedl: look back ### which was a two-part television movie that we did in Portland. Porlland is about 280 miles from where I live. And about tvr'o months ago I finished a movie for Lifetime, with Park Overall and Kirsten Dunst. lTentatively titled Fy'leen and Pregwnt]. b was my first real character role, I played a grandmother. Although I played a grandrnothet in Dedd by Smset, b\rt that was a very glamorous woman, and it was a small role. This one was kind of a gruff, tough type woman, and I had lots of fun -with ii. So, I'm aging gracefully! HHFC: What prompted you to move to Oregon? MM: I just couldn't take L.A. anymore. There wasjust no work there. And it's very expensive if you're an out-of-work actress Ard oddly enough. since I moved up here in 1993, I think I've had more interviews, and those two movie jobs, which I never would have had a pop at in L.A. because my agent died, and as a middle-aged actress with a dead agent ... you're career is dead. Nobody s interested. llyou're not pulling in hundreds of thousands of dollars for an agency, they're not much interest anymore. It's not like the old days. Who's going to work for someone in their fifties? I don't know ofan agent that would. At least in my case. Some fans have a hazy memory of a "final" Hogan's //eroei episode in which the heroes return home, but that's just wishful thinking. The series was cancelled while the cast and crew were on hiatus after their sixth season. They had no idea when they were filming their last episode that they wouldn't be returning for a seventh year. So they didn't get the chance to do a "wrap-up episode like some other series have done.
