Supreme Court rules President can run for third term
By Ashwin Hemmathagama
(FT.lk) - President Mahinda Rajapakse
has received what a Senior Minister
described as the “much-wanted
favourable interpretation” from Supreme
Court.
Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources
Management and the Leader of the
House of Parliament Nimal Siripala de
Silva yesterday informed the Parliament
the Supreme Court has given the
greenlight, allowing the President to stand
for another round of elections.
“It is with great pleasure I inform this
House of the Supreme Court
interpretation, which held that it lawful and
not against the Constitution for President
Mahinda Rajapaksa to stand for a third
term. According to the Supreme Court,
the necessary provisions are already
found in the Constitution,” he told the
House.
On Monday night, the Supreme Court
delivered its determination on incumbent
President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s eligibility
to contest for a third term to the President
at Temple Trees.
The opinion was endorsed by the nine
Supreme Court judges who met at the
Chief Justice’s room at the Supreme
Court yesterday. They discussed for
about one-and-a-half hours before
endorsing their opinion on the President’s
requests.
The Supreme Court Bench comprised
Chief Justice Mohan Peiris, Justice K.
Sripavan, Justice Chandra Ekanayake,
Justice Priyasath Dep, Justice Eva
Wanasundera, Justice Rohini
Marasinghe, Justice B.P. Aluvihara,
Justice Sisira de Abrew, Justice Sarath de
Abrew and Justice Priyantha
Jayawardena.
Earlier, the President submitted a series
of questions to the Supreme Court for its
consideration asking the apex Court to
submit its opinion on to him before 10
November.
President Rajapaksa, who was elected in
January 2010 for a second term in office,
asked the Supreme Court whether the
Constitution, as amended by the 18th
Amendment, will allow him to declare his
intention to contest for presidency after
the expiration of four years from the date
of commencement of his second term of
office as President on 19 November 2010.
The President made the request in terms
of Provision 129 (I) of the Constitution.
The Apex Court informed the Bar
Association of Sri Lanka of the
President’s request and asked them to
submit any points they have in writing to
the Registry of the Supreme Court by
Friday, 7 November.
Interested parties submitted 38 petitions
to the Court both in favour and against the
President’s inquiry. The Bar weighed in on
behalf of the President and the majority of
submissions were in his favour.
The decision by President last week to
seek Supreme Court opinion came under
fire by Opposition parties as well as legal
experts whilst Bar Association sought
extended time to submit written
submissions apart from wanting to make
oral submissions. UNP Leader Ranil
Wickremesinghe noted Supreme Court
opinion on the constitutionality of the
President seeking a third term has no
validity since there is no legal binding in
such an opinion. The JVP filed a motion
to appeal to the Supreme Court to hear
the opinion sought by the President in
open court.

Lanka pushes for full-fledged UN
holiday for Vesak
(sundaytimes.lk) UNITED NATIONS – Sri Lanka is
leading an effort to have Vesak declared a fullfledged UN holiday. The proposal will first go
before the Administrative and Budgetary
Committee and finally before the 193-member
General Assembly, the highest policy making body
at the United Nations, for approval.
Currently, the UN annually commemorates a Day
of National Observance for Vesak, a move that
was successfully initiated by former Foreign
Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar on the
recommendation of the International Buddhist
Conference in 1998. In 1999, Sri Lanka and 15
other countries requested a UN holiday for Vesak,
a sacred day to the world’s more than 500 million

Buddhists and a national holiday in Buddhistmajority countries.
The UN advised that there would be financial
implications and the countries concerned settled
for the UN acknowledging the importance of the
day.
Recently when Israel requested that Yom Kippur
be declared a holiday, the UN revising its position,
advised there would be no financial implications.
As a consequence, a number of Buddhist and
other countries, led by Sri Lanka, have revived the
request that Vesak be declared a UN holiday.
Currently the matter is being discussed at the
highest levels at the UN. Following Sri Lanka’s
initiative, India has suggested that it may ask that
days sacred to Hindus, Jains and Sikhs also
be declared holidays by the UN.

(colombogazette.com) The Sri Lankan
Government has agreed to transfer five Indian
fishermen who were sentenced to death, to a
jail in India, an Indian politician said today.
Senior BJP member Subramanian Swamy
said that the agreement was reached
following talks held yesterday between
President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Indian
Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Swamy said that during a telephone
conversation between the President and
Indian Prime Minister, the two sides discussed
the issue over the five Indian fishermen which
has now become a sensitive matter in India.
President Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Modi
had discussed processing the documents to
transfer the five Indians to an Indian jail.
The Indians had been sentenced to death by
a local court after being found guilty of
smuggling drugs. Two other Sri Lankans were
also found guilty and given the death
sentence in the same case. (Colombo

(sundayobserver.lk) Over 382 million people the
world over and in Sri Lanka have been diagnosed
with diabetes and this number will double to 592
million by 2035, statistics from the International
Diabetes Federation (IDF) report of 2013, have
revealed.
According to the survey this increase would occur
largely in the Indian and Asian subcontinents, due
to the genetic, environmental and social factors
and 90-95 percent people would have Type 2
diabetes.
The latest research on Sri Lankans with diabetes
and pre-diabetes by Consultant Endricrinologist
and Diabetologist Dr Prasad Katulanda has
revealed that 10.3 percent of Sri Lankans have
Type 2 diabetes and 11.50 percent had prediabetes (impaired fasting glucose) the majority of
whom are unaware of it.
According to global statistics of 2013, 46 percent
pre-diabetics are unaware they had the disease.
Although the number of deaths from diabetes had
declined with improved facilities health officials
said there was a disturbing trend in the increase in
the number of diabetics among pregnant mothers.
Screening of pregnant women in five MOH
districts at Piliyandala, Padukka, Pitakotte,
Kadawatha and Hanwella in 2010 revealed that
19.3 percent of pregnant mothers suffered from
gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy).
Co-ordinator Diabetes Prevention Task Force of
the Sri Lanka Medical Association Dr Hasitha
Fernando, told the Sunday Observer that although
most of these mothers had been cured, many
developed diabetes when they resumed their
former unhealthy lifestyles.
A Diabetes Walk will be held on November 14
(World Diabetes Prevention Day) from the
Independence Square and conclude at the
BMICH.
There will be a free screening for diabetes and
several lectures will be held on diabetes by a
panel of experts at the BMICH. "All are welcome",
media spokesperson Dr Suguni Galapathi said.

Singithi Scouts at S. Thomas’ College
ISSUE 1197
Opening a new chapter in Sri Lankan Scouting
(dailynews.lk) The 16th Colombo Scout Group of
S.Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia has again
successfully initiated a project that would benefit
the entire Scout Movement in Sri Lanka, which will
add a new section to their Scout Group and open a
new chapter in the history of scouting in the
country.
The project is called ‘Singithi Scouts’. This
concept, known internationally as Beaver Scouts,
comes from the World Organisation of the Scout
Movement, which encourages all students
between five and a half years to seven years to
experience Scouting.
The Sri Lanka Scout Association too has decided
to follow suit and has successfully taken the first
step by promoting the concept in a few schools, of
which the 16th Colombo Scout Group of S.
Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia became the first
school to have the inaugural batch of Singithi
Scouts in Sri Lanka.
The first batch of Singithi Scouts was enrolled on
October 7. The inaugural investiture ceremony for
these pioneer Singithi Scouts will take place
tomorrow at S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia
under the patronage of First Lady Shiranthi
Rajapaksa who will grace this occasion as the
Chief Guest.
S. Thomas’ College has been selected as it has
been actively involved in Cub Scouting for the past
90 years. Singithi Scouts too will get many
opportunities to put their talents to good use and
have fun outdoors.
The Singithi Scouts program will be based on more
outdoor activities and fun filled play time that will
enable the little ones to bring out their talents.
Areas of work include: handwork, games, acting,
singing and storytelling.
Furthermore, this program, which is world
renowned as one of the best methods, is intended
to educate young children through the most
simplest of ways.
Singithi Scouting has been implemented with the
intention of encouraging young children to come
forward with their talents and also to prepare them
for Cub Scouting.
Started with the prime objective of making “better
use” of the free time of boys, Scouting has grown
to be a worldwide movement for youth aimed at
producing community-minded, independent, able
individuals and young leaders who see beyond
sectarianism and narrow self-interest in the
ordering of their lives and influencing the lives of
people around
them.
The World Scout
Movement is now
the largest youth
body in the world
comprising more
than 30 million
members. “Smart,
Courteous,
Obedient, Useful
and Trustworthy”
citizens have been
the marvelous fruit
of this movement
for the last 106
years, since its

Scouting was begun in Sri Lanka in 1912 and

the prestigious Brig. C.P. Jayawardena Challenge
Trophy awarded for the ‘Best Senior Scout Troop’
in the District. The C.P.J. Shield was retained for
the fifth consecutive year by the Troop (20092014).
The Troop had also retained the Mayor’s Flag
(awarded for the Best Junior Scout Troop) for eight
consecutive years from 2006 to 2013. The Troop
retained both awards for five consecutive years
from 2009-2013.
The 16th Colombo Cub Pack has also been
performing exceptionally well throughout the years.
The present Cub Pack comprises around 200
Cubs backed by many Cub teachers (Akelas). The
Cub Pack recently won the C.M.P. Wanigathunga
Flag for the ‘Best Cub Pack in the District’ for the
8th consecutive year, since its inception in 2007.
Furthermore, in the most recent annual Scout
Service and Relationship Week held in June 2014,
the Group raised a record collection to become the
‘Highest Collectors in the Island’. The District
Commissioner’s Flag was also awarded this year
for the third consecutive year titling the Group as
the ‘Best Scout Group in the District’.
Amidst all these achievements it is important to
note the fact that the Group does not only attempt
to win competitions, but also to maintain an
exemplary level of conduct and discipline in all
fields.
There is a high level of commitment and hard work
that is put in to all these which has yielded results.
The Group also maintains a code of high ethical

by the Office of the High Commissioner for

The following is the text of Aryasinha’s response:
"It is extremely regrettable that a News Release
should have been issued on this matter
attributed personally to you questioning the
integrity of the Government of a sovereign nation
which has been a member of the United Nations
since 1955. As you would be aware, Sri Lanka
has contributed consistently to the United

a lead in norm setting processes including the
Law of the Sea Conference, disarmament and
human rights.
"It is unfortunate that your News Release has

TNA says Saudi not a friend of Tamils
(colombogazette.com) The Tamil National Alliance
(TNA) today accused Saudi Arabia of backing
human rights violations in Sri
Lanka adding that the Middle
Eastern country is not a friend of
the Tamils.
TNA MP C. Yogeswaran,
speaking in Parliament today,
said that while Saudi Arabia may
be seen as a friend of the Sri
Lankan Government, it cannot be
accepted in the same manner by
the Tamils in the North and East.
The MP recalled that Saudi
Arabia had backed the Sri Lankan government at
the UN Human Rights Council when the resolution
on Sri Lanka was submitted to the Council.
He said that Saudi Arabia has also been accused
of failing to prevent human rights
violations being committed
against maids employed in that
country.
The MP also noted that Saudi
Arabia unlawfully executes people
and does not have any
compassion towards the people.

UN Accused Of Withholding Real-time
Evidence Of War Crimes In SL
(asianmirror.lk) The Inner City Press on
Tuesday charged that the “UN has withheld
real-time evidence of war crime” in Sri Lanka
in 2009, in “effect protecting the government
of Sri Lanka from criticism” by the international
community at large.
This allegation was leveled yesterday at a
discussion that was held about "War Crimes
Records," primarily about the Holocaust but
with Syria, for example, mentioned by Dan
Plesch on the panel.
Plesch asked, if people could collect records
in London under bombing, how not in Syria
today? Indeed. But consider that the UN itself
WITHHELD evidence of war crimes in Sri
Lanka in 2009.
Posing a question at the panel about the
viability of holding a “legally substantiated
investigation into events took place in 2009
with Sri Lanka refusing to give visas for UN
investigators and trying to intimidate potential
witnesses”, Inner City Press journalist
Matthew Russell Lee said that the UN has
“withheld casualty statistics it had in real-time
about what it knows” about Sri Lanka’s war
crime in 2009.
“After claiming of Sri Lanka that "we don't
count bodies," the UN has now involuntarily
admitted that the "minimum number of
documented civilian casualties since 20
January 2009, as of 7 March 2009 in the
conflict area of Mullaitivu Region [is] 9,924
casualties including 2,683 deaths and 7,241
injuries," in a leaked document of the Office
for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs
obtained by Inner City Press,” the ICP said.
“OCHA's top official John Holmes, as well as
spokespeople for UN Secretary General Ban
Ki-moon, have repeatedly denied that the UN
has such casualty figures. Now it appears that
unlike in other
conflicts from
Darfur to Gaza, the
UN withheld the Sri
Lanka figures, in
effect protecting
the Sri Lankan
government from
criticism,” it also
stated.
(sundaytimes.lk) With the Holy Father set to visit
the country on January 13, the Sri Lankan Army
and Police are gearing up to implement a tight
security plan, while the church prepares to greet
the Roman Catholic Pontiff and canonise the first
saint of Sri Lanka
“We will provide tight security to the Pope without
causing any disturbance to any religious activities,”
Army Spokesperson Brigadier Ruwan
Wannigasooriya said.
The Police too were involved in security
arrangements in addition to traffic plans.
Apart from some of the major programmes
conducted by the Sri Lankan Catholic Church, its
major focus would be to prepare the people
spiritually for Pope Francis’s visit.
“Special prayer cards have been distributed to all
the churches, and prayers will be recited before or
after each holy mass in preparation for the Holy
visit and the canonisation of the Blessed Joseph
Vaz that will take place during the Pope’s visit,”
Rev. Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando secretary to the
Media & Information Secretariat – Pope’s Visit said.
“Sunday School children will undergo special
preparation and during the Pope’s visit they will
present to Pope Francis a spiritual bouquet that will
include prayers and good deeds done by these
children in preparation for the visit,” he added.
Discussing the route the Pope will take, Fr. Gamini
said the Pontiff will travel from the Bandaranaike
International Airport along the Negombo road to
Colombo in an open vehicle.

Goans to attend Fr. Vaz’ canonisation in Colombo
By Aviral Mishra
(sundaytimes.lk) The news of the Pope’s visit to
Colombo for the canonisation of Indian-born Father
Joseph Vaz has brought great excitement to
natives of Father Vaz’s birthplace with preparations
for the ceremony being made in Goa.
About 1,000 followers of Fr. Vaz from India’s southwestern state of Goa, where Vaz was born and
brought up, are expected to attend the canonisation
in Colombo set to take place in January.
“About 1,000 Goans have confirmed their
visit to witness the canonisation process.
These numbers may increase once the
Pope’s visit is finalised by Cardinal Malcolm

House in Borella and here the pontiff will meet with

The next day will be a special occasion for the
Church of Sri Lanka. The Holy Father will celebrate
holy mass on Gallle Face Green at 8.30 am and
during this mass the Blessed Joseph Vass will be
canonised. This will be the most important part of
the Pope’s visit, he said.
“Before the mass the Holy Father will tour the city
in an open vehicle so that the people can see him.
Later on in the afternoon he will fly to the Madhu
Church and he will be there for about an hour. He
will attend a special prayer service and will bless
the people with the statue of Our Lady of Madhu,”
Fr. Gamini added.
On January 15 the Pope will leave for the
Phillipines from Sri Lanka.
Fr. Gamini said, “We expect people to start
gathering at Galle Face Green by noon on January
13, and we will provide sanitation facilities and
there will be eating outlets for those who wish to
spend the night. We will also have special prayer
programmes for them and, most importantly, these
people will have the opportunity to give their
confessions.”
Social Services Minsiter Felix Perera said, “The
roadsides will be decorated with flags and banners
greeting the Pope. Around 3000 flags will be fixed

Fr. Rebello also stated that the Goa government,

the central government to start direct flights

overwhelming response we received, charter flights
may also be a solution to manage the exodus,” Fr.
Rebello said.

CBK eclipses Karu
Quest for common candidate:
by Shamindra Ferdinando
(island.lk) Former UNP Deputy Leader and MP
Karu Jayasuriya has received the backing of many
political parties and groups looking for a common
candidate at the forthcoming
presidential election, but some
influential players are of the view that
twice-president Chandrika
Bandaranaike Kumaratunga will be a
better candidate.
Sources said that UNP National Leader
Ranil Wickremesinghe had recently
suggested that Kumaratunga should be
the Opposition’s choice unless he was
accepted as the common candidate.
The JVP, too, was agreeable to backing
Kumaratunga to accomplish a specific
mission, sources said, adding that those
pushing for Kumaratunga's candidature believed
the former SLFP leader could engineer some
notable defections from the government.
Responding to a query, sources said that the move
was meant to address concerns raised by MP
Mangala Samaraweera, who had called for
tangible measures to form a genuine coalition.
Sources said that as Kumaratunga was also
acceptable to Samaraweera, the Matara District
MP could be persuaded to remain in the party if
she was fielded to challenge President Rajapaksa.
Asked whether the coalition was
contemplating any special conditions,
sources said that whoever took up the
challenge would have to quit his or her
party. In case of Kumaratunga that
question would not arise, sources said.
Sources revealed that there hadn't been
a consensus among the UNP
parliamentary group members as
regards Jayasuriya's candidature
though he had received the backing of
some political parties and organisations
including the Peoples' Movement for a
Just Society and National Council for a
clean tomorrow led by Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha
Thera and Ven. Athureliya Rathana Thera.
However, the JVP has asserted that Kumaratunga
would stand a better chance.
ECJ to review lifting of LTTE ban before 15 Jan
BY SULOCHANA RAMIAH MOHAN
(ceylontoday.lk) The next hearing on the annulling
of the restrictions imposed on the LTTE at the
European Court of Justice (ECJ) will take place
before 15 January 2015, according the French
Ambassador, Jean-Paul Monchau.
The French Envoy said before 15 January, the
matter will be reviewed and brought forth in
Brussels. He added, that annulling of the
restrictions on the LTTE is the decision of the ECJ
at the moment. "What you should know is that
justice is totally a separate power in the EU
countries and EU has a Parliament, a commission
and a council and they have their Court."
Explaining further as to how the LTTE matter came
to ECJ, he said, "The Court received a complaint
several years ago that the inscription of the LTTE as
a terrorist organization is not legal for many
reasons. The Court finally decided that it should be
annulled however, the ambassador continued state
the matter has not ended as yet."
He stressed that while the LTTE restriction was
annulled, at the same time the court also said they
would keep the effect of this restriction for the next
three months to see the possibility of reinstating it.
"I know it surprised many people. But it's not the
end of the story. We have a court which can tell the
Council of the EU what is good and the Council has
to correct it. There are no other intentions as many
think."
When asked who asked the ECJ to review the
annulling of the restriction, the ambassador pointed
out that still the EU considers the LTTE as a
terrorist organization and the court has given three
months to review the effects of the decision. Council
will review the work which has been done.
"The objective is to keep the LTTE listed as a
terrorist organization. Much material taking from
many other EU countries can be shown to prove
why it should be listed. That provision is there," he
stressed.
If Muslim's grievances are met SLMC
will support common candidate
BY Ruwan Laknath Jayakody
SPECIAL OFFER
(ceylontoday.lk) If a common candidate is prepared
to address the grievances of the Muslim people the
Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) will
undoubtedly support such a person at the
forthcoming Presidential Election, General
Secretary of the SLMC, Hasan Ali said.
The SLMC did not have to support the
government candidate as the government
had not delivered its promises made to the
people who represent the SLMC. If the
SLMC went with the government, longer,
the Muslim people would not vote for the
SLMC, Hasan Ali added.
"The common candidacy is a subject of
concern for the majority community. No
minority person can become the President
even though there is provision for it in the
Constitution. We will talk to the candidates about
their election manifesto and what they will do for us
after being voted in. The Executive Presidency
should either be completely abolished or modified
to strengthen democracy. The Tamil National
Alliance as a minority too, will vote in this manner.
We have to help somebody who will help us," Ali
said.
In the Ampara District where 70% of the people
speak Tamil, not a single Tamil speaking
Government Agent had been appointed, Ali said.
The SLMC had signed a memoranda of
understanding with the government as
government had agreed to allow a
separate Administrative District in Ampara
during the Eastern Provincial Council
election, Ali said.
"We are not asking for a separate
province, only an Administrative District
like the other 24. Before 1961, Ampara
was a part of the Batticaloa District. The
electorates of Sammanthurai, Kalmune
and Pothuvil which form the Southern
part of the Batticaloa District were earlier called the
Kalmune region along with Ampara. Ampara was
created as a new District after annexing 1,400
square kilometres from Moneragala. Thus, it was
changed from Kalmune to Ampara," he added.
The government, the Opposition and the Janatha
Vimukthi Peramuna
opposes this, Ali said.
"This was promised to
us by former President
Chandrika
Bandaranaike
Kumaratunga, former
Prime Minister Ranil
Wickremesinghe and
also by President
Mahinda Rajapaksa. It
is our duty to ask for
this and we are not
putting undue pressure
on the government.
Certain factions of the
government are
however, portraying us
as Shylocks asking for

North CM slams state and the judiciary
(colombogazette.com) Slamming the central
government and Supreme Court, visiting Chief
Minister of Sri Lanka’s Northern Province C V
Wigneswaran today claimed “state violence” in the
island continued and the judiciary too played a role
in foisting a second-class citizenship on Tamils.
On his first foreign visit after taking over as Chief
Minister of the Tamil-populated Northern Province,
he also stressed that India had
legal and moral obligations to
ensure the welfare of Sri Lankan
citizens.
“State violence in Sri Lanka
continues. Tamils, though the worst
affected by far, are not the only
ones… Other minorities such as
Muslims and Christians have been
targeted with a view to project a
government that is representative
only of Sinhala Buddhists and to
portray new enemies and targets,”
he said.
Delivering a lecture organised by People’s Union
of Civil Liberties (PUCL) in Chennai, he contended
that the Lankan executive was emboldened by the
series of decisions made by the Supreme Court in
supporting bills and constitutional amendments
and holding with the executive in the fundamental
rights’ case, the Press Trust of India reported.
“The Sri Lankan judiciary has fostered a culture of
impunity in many ways; sometimes very
insidiously… It has failed in preventing a culture of
impunity and has contributed directly to the
executive’s authoritarian rise,” said the former
judge of Lankan Supreme Court.
Thanking the Indian Government for insisting on
elections in the Northern Province, he said, “India
has legal and moral obligations to ensure the
welfare of Sri Lankan citizens.
“It should do so by holding the Lankan government
to its promises and to its obligations under
international law. It should lend support to
international processes that were in furtherance of
justice and truth.
“It should do so by ensuring that the right of self
determination of the Tamil
speaking peoples of Lanka is
realised within a united Sri Lanka,”
he said.
Recalling his earlier contentions
that militarisation of North in Lanka
took place to “maintain a
stranglehold” over Tamils, he said
despite cases pending before the
apex court, “Army continues to
destroy whatever is left of the
buildings, homes, holy places or
hallowed school premises inside
the High Security Zone.”
The first to be elected Chief Minister of the
province after the fall of LTTE in the 2009 war,
Wigneswaran said he did not even have the right
to visit a place in his areas, which army had
reportedly vandalised.
One invariably got termed a terrorist, Naxalite,
Communist and imperialist by the state for pointing
out “injustices” meted out by it, he said, adding,
“Even I may be called a terrorist, once I get back
to Sri Lanka.”
He alleged that Lankan government was arresting
and intimidating those collecting evidence for the
international investigation into its actions as it’s
“primary aim was to let no evidence leave the
shores. (Colombo Gazette)

UN’s Zeid accuses Sri Lanka of trying to
sabotage war crimes probe
(ft.lk) Reuters: The UN High Commissioner for
Human Rights on Friday accused Sri Lanka of
trying to “sabotage” a war crimes inquiry, creating
a “wall of fear” to prevent witnesses from giving
evidence.
The UN Human Rights Council set
up the inquiry in March to
investigate crimes allegedly
committed by both Government
forces and Tamil rebels during the
final stages of a 26-year conflict
that ended in 2009.
“The Government of Sri Lanka has
refused point-blank to cooperate
with the investigation despite being
explicitly requested by the Human Rights Council
to do so,” Commissioner Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein
said in his statement.
“A wall of fear has been created that has
undoubtedly served to deter people from
submitting evidence.”
“Such a refusal does not, however, undermine the
integrity of an investigation set up by the Council –
instead it raises concerns about the
integrity of the government in
question. Why would governments
with nothing to hide go to such
extraordinary lengths to sabotage
an impartial international
investigation?”
A Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry
official rejected Zeid’s remarks.
“The Government categorically
rejects any insinuation of
sabotaging the so-called ‘independent
investigation’ by the panel of the UNHRC,” the
official, who declined to be named, told Reuters.

Ban backs Zeid’s views on Sri Lanka
(colombogazette.com) UN Secretary General Ban
ki-moon has backed the views on Sri Lanka of the
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Prince
Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein and has urged Sri Lanka to
cooperate with Zeid’s office.
The views on the UN Chief were expressed
following a war of words between the Sri Lankan
Government and Zeid on the UN-led investigations
on Sri Lanka.
“The SecretaryGeneral supports
the views of High Commissioner
Zeid, and he agrees with High
Commissioner Zeid that the
Government of Sri Lanka should
cooperate. And we will continue to
urge that they do so,” Farhan Haq,
Deputy Spokesman for the
Secretary-General said.
Last week the Government hit back
at the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights,
accusing him of using intemperate language to
attack and vilify a sovereign member of the United
Nations.
In a letter to Prince Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, hours
after he issued a statement accusing the
Government of attempting to sabotage the UN led
investigations on Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka’s
Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva
Ravinatha Aryasinha, said that the actions of Al
SLFP EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
Hussein would regrettably constrain constructive
engagement which the Government of Sri Lanka
has consistently sought to pursue.
“It is a matter of deep concern to note that you, as
a high official of the UN system, have resorted to
the use of intemperate language to attack and
vilify a sovereign member of the United Nations.
Further, you have chosen to cast aspersions and
denigrate a democratically elected Government. In
fact, some countries have, on
extremely cogent grounds, rejected
mandates of the Council previously
in much stronger ways, and have
not been censured in the manner as
in this instance. This undoubtedly
confirms the double standards being
applied. This type of action on your
part would regrettably constrain
constructive engagement which the
Government of Sri Lanka has consistently sought
to pursue,” Aryasinha said.
Al Hussein had criticized the continuing attacks by
the Sri Lankan Government on the integrity of the
UN Human Rights Office’s ongoing investigation
into alleged grave human rights violations and
abuses in Sri Lanka, and condemned the
intimidation of human rights defenders and
individuals who may wish to cooperate with the
investigation. (Colombo Gazette)

Ranil writes to EU on ruling over LTTE
(colombogazette.com) Opposition United National
Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has
written to the EU High Representative Federica
Mogherini urging the to file an appeal against the
EU court order on the LTTE.
Wickremesinghe said that he had
sent the letter after he found that
the Government was not taking
any firm action on the EU court
order.
EU judges had last month struck
down anti-terrorism sanctions
imposed on the LTTE by the
European Union, citing a
technicality, but said that the
assets of the Sri Lankan group
should remain frozen for the time being.
The bloc’s lower court said a decision by EU
leaders in 2006 to place the LTTE on a list of
terrorist organisations had been based on
“imputations derived from the press and the
Internet” rather than on direct investigation of the
group’s actions, as required by law.
It said in a statement that the EU had also failed,
when following Indian sanctions on the Tigers, to
ensure that India gave sufficient judicial protection
to those it accused.
However, the court rejected the
LTTE’s contention that it was
exempt from EU anti-terrorism
legislation because it was
engaged in an “armed conflict”
with the Sri Lankan government
and bound by the laws of war.
The court, which stressed it was
taking no view on whether the
LTTE was a terrorist organisation,
said EU laws on terrorism also
applied to armed conflicts.
Saying that sanctions might be applied in future
against the Tigers, who were defeated militarily in
2009, the court said assets that were frozen
should remain so “temporarily”. (Colombo

UN’s Zeid
Foreign Ministry said the investigators were
unprofessional, selective and biased, since they
had refused to divulge details of witness
interviews.
Zeid rejected the accusation and said it was
standard procedure to protect sources of
information against reprisals.
He also said the ministry had made an “absurd”
accusation by saying the UN investigation had
been compromised by the arrest of a man with
blank signed forms that could be filled in and
submitted to investigators.
Police in Kilinochchi, the former stronghold of the
Tamil Tiger rebels, said the arrested 57-year-old,
Sinnathamby Krishnaraja, had collected personal
details and signatures from local Tamils and then
filled in the forms as he wished.
They said he was a former Tamil Tiger member,
but his son K. Sudhakar told Reuters his father
had never been involved in any rebel activities.
Zeid said the UN investigators would not be taken
in by such alleged frauds and had never issued
any such forms for people to fill in.
“It is a false equation to suggest that because
someone may have been trying to submit false
submissions, the inquiry is discredited,” he said.

Communist Party In Crisis: Central Committee
Divided Over supporting MR
(asianmirror.lk) A heated debate had broken out in
the Central Committee meeting of the Communist
Party of Sri Lanka due to a proposal that the party
should support President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the
next presidential election.
The General Secretary of the party DEW
Gunasekera has made this proposal on the Central
Committee (CC) meeting on Sunday, November 9.
Member of the CC of CPSL Raja Uswatakeyiyava
said that the proposal was passed with a majority.
While there were 26 votes for the proposal, 14
votes were against. One member reportedly
abstained from voting.
Those who opposed the proposal had severely
criticized the president for preparing for a premature
presidential election, with no regard to the proposal
by the CPSL that the government should abolish
the Executive Presidency.
This situation has compelled some members of the
party to support the Movement for a Just Society
led by Maduluwawe Sobitha Thera. The movement
has been campaigning with the goal of forcing the
government to abolish Executive Presidency for
some time.
This development came in the wake of the
controversy where the Communist Party of Sri
Lanka withholding all the copies of the latest edition
of ‘Aththa’ newspaper without releasing them to the
market. This came as a result of the internal dispute
of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka which is one of
the oldest political parties in the country.
The ‘seized’ copies of Aththa newspaper were
stored inside a room at the Communist Party
headquarters.
it is also learnt that Editor-in-Chief of the Aththa
newspaper, Dr. Michael Fernando is to resign from
him position in protest of the incident.
Karu to be common candidate?
(dailymirror.lk) The opposition parties yesterday
agreed to field a common candidate at the
forthcoming snap presidential election to be
declared on November 19, the Daily Mirror learns.
Ven. Maduluwave Sobhitha Thera, the convener of
the National Movement for Social Justice, held
separate meetings with representatives of political
parties interested in working together
at the next presidential election on a
common programme.
The programme is meant for the
abolition of the executive presidency
and the re-introduction of the 17th
Amendment to the Constitution.
Among those who attended the meeting were
former President Chandrika Kumaratunga, JHU
MP Ven. Athuraliye Ratana Thera and its National
Organizer Nishantha Warnasinghe, Nawa Sihala
Urumaya Leader Sarath Manamenddra, National
Unity Alliance leader Asad Sally and Mawbima
Janatha Party leader Hemakumara Nanayakkara.
Trade union leader Saman Ratnapriya also
attended the meeting with Sobitha Thera.
The names proposed for the candidates to contest
under a common symbol were Mrs. Kumaratunga,
UNP MP Karu Jayasuriya and UNP leader Ranil
Wickremesinghe. It is learnt that she, together with
other leaders of the opposition, will address the
media next week. Mr. Jayasuriya also
met Ven. Sobhitha Thera yesterday.
Meanwhile, Ven. Sobhitha Thera told a
news conference after these meetings
with the leaders that an understanding
between the UNP and JVP could be
brought about on the fielding of a
common candidate.
The latest move to field a common opposition
candidate with the backing of the UNP had also
stopped a move by several senior UNP MPs
including Mangala Samaraweera to switch sides.

JHU To Break: Crucial Central Committee
Meeting Scheduled On Friday
(asianmirror.lk) The Central Committee of the
Jathika Hela Urumaya is to meet on Friday (14)
to make a final decision on its support to
President Mahinda Rajapaksa and to the UPFA
government.
Speaking to Asian Mirror, a spokesman of the
JHU said, during the Working Committee
meeting, the party would
make a detailed analysis on
the manner in which the
government responded to
the proposals presented by
the JHU.
The Central Committee will
meet two days after the
protest rally organized by the
Pivithuru Hetak organization,
under the Leadership of JHU
Parliamentarian Athuraliye Rathana Thera. Key
members of the government have already
started to criticize Rathana Thera’s role as a
Parliamentarian of the ruling party, saying the
prominent Buddhist monk has “crossed his
boundaries”.
There are some speculations that the JHU
Parliamentarians – Minister Patali Champika
Ranawaka and Athuraliye Rathana Thera- will sit
in the opposition from November 15. It was also
rumoured that Minister Ranawaka was making
preparations to vacate his official residence as
the Minister of Technology and Research.
However, the JHU spokesman added that no
final decision has so far been made on the
matter.
All the attempts made by
various parties to build up an
understanding between the
government and the JHU
have ended up being futile.
The UPFA government did
not agree to implement the
proposals presented by the
JHU calling for a
comprehensive constitutional
amendment before the next presidential election.
Meanwhile, the ‘Pivithuru Hetak’ organization
charged this morning that Athuraliye Rathana’s
Thera’s Facebook profile has been hacked. A
spokesman for the organization dubbed it as an
interesting development as the profile was
hacked at a time when the relationship between
Rathana Thera and the government is strained.
President ready to pardon Indian fishermen
(adaderana.lk) In good news for the five Indian
fishermen serving a death sentence in the Sri
Lankan jail, President Mahinda Rajapaksa has
agreed to pardon and release them without any
conditions within two or three days, IBN Live
reported.
The decision comes days after Prime Minister
Narendra Modi spoke to the Sri Lankan President
where they agreed to transfer the fishermen to an
Indian jail.
Sri Lankan MP and Deputy Minister of
Telecommunication and Information Technology
Prabha Ganesan has said that he was asked to
convey to the Indian High Commission in Sri
Lanka that the President was willing to pardon and
release the five fishermen.
On behalf of the Indian fishermen, an appeal on
was filed against the death sentence in the court
of appeals by the lawyer engaged by the Indian
high commission. The Indian High Commission
has approached some of the best legal brains of
Sri Lanka to have a look at it and they are
examining what would be the best avenue to
ensure that those five fisherman can be brought
back home,” the spokesperson of the Indian High
Commission in Colombo had said.

(island.lk) Former Sri Lankan MP and attorney-atlaw, Prince Gunasekera, said that a presidential
candidate should not be limited to just two terms as
it would infringe on the candidate’s democratic
rights.
Ninety-one-year-old veteran politician living in
London told The Island that the duty of the people
in Sri Lanka was not to stop people from contesting
elections but to force politicians to stop corruption,
bribery and killings.

competitive advantage for the Sri Lanka travel
industry and to stay abreast with the latest
developments in the travel industry. The travel fair

participate at WTM at a concessionary rate this
year as well.
The delegation which comprised of industry
partners and officials representing the government
of Sri Lanka was lead by, Mr Rumy Jauffer,

Gee Amaa…
an Unforgettable night
with Beautiful Music
The beautiful musical event Gee Amaa took place
on 2nd of November 2014 at Logon Hall, London,
United Kingdom.
The never ageing voice of Sri Lanka 'Mr. Priya
Suriyasena', the most melodies voice of the era
'Nirosha Viragini' , Very talented 'Piushan Perera
(Late Milton Perera's son)' along with the most
diversified music composer of our age 'Mr. Suresh
Maliyadde', created the magnificent event with the
help of many talented musicians both from Sri
Lanka and United Kingdom. The musicians who
joined Suresh Maliyadde from Sri Lanka are
number one talented players. Nihal Kalubowila with
Tabla, Jayantha Dissanayake with Saxophone and
Rukshan Gunawardane with Violin contributed
massively in order to bring the night to its perfect
level.
All the hard work of the organising team paid off
really well to a vast audience who left after the
show with nothing other than pure music fulfilment.
What a night it was. How wonderfully the team
delivered was evident by the audience's positive
reviews after the show. The event was a quality
musical event with quality and high standards who
brought singers from three generations to entertain
the UK audience who loves music.
The show started with Priya Suriyasena singing
'Adaraniya
Neranjana'…to
the cheering
crowed. His other
songs 'Atha ran
Viman,
Sarathasa Niwa,
Hadawatha
illa…captured the audiences heart who loves him
over the decades. Then came the sweetest voice
of Nirosha Viragini with the song ' Sinathotak'.
Nirosha sang quite a few songs including 'Punsada
Rata, Sanda Diya Uthura and Sanda rajini. Nirosha
beautifully singing 'Manzile' hindi song to Suresh
Maliydde playing the Piano was a real treat to the
audience. The audience was thrown back to 60s
when Piushan Perera entered the stage with his
late father Milton Perera's song 'Sikuruliya'. He
then went on singing most famous songs by his
father. Kalyaniye, Asa randunu randunu and Pem
apsarawo to name a few. There were two duet
songs by Priya Suriyasena and Piushan Perera
with Nirosha singing with both the singers. One
more highlight of the show was Priya singing the
Medley, combining the songs, Sudu parevi rana se,
Mulu muhudama handai and Sanda tharaka nivavi.
All the artists performed well and were satisfied
with the audience's response. All the instruments
played well by the musicians. The whole evening
went smoothly leaving no faults with Suresh
Maliyadde's directorial and leadership skills.
The organisers also honoured the singers and the
musicians with the Gee Amaa Souvenir.
It was a beautiful evening which will stay in the
audiences' memory for a very long time.

SRI LANKA MALAY (UK) ASSOCIATION DINNER DANCE
Article & photography by
Neil de la Harpe
The Sri Lanka Malay (UK) Association
Dinner/Dance took place on Saturday the 25th of
October 2014, at the Holiday Inn, Empire Way,
Wembley HA9 8DS. Cocktails were served from
19.00 hrs. & the Chief Guests from the Sri Lanka
High Commission, Councillor Mr. K.K. Yoganathan
& Dr. Ms. Kokila Waidyaratne arrived at around
20.00.
An hour later, the
President, Ms. Zounie
Fallil addressed the
audience with a short but
effective speech. Mr.
Yoganathan spoke next
& this was followed by
Khalid Din & the Sri
Bulang Dance Troupe
entertaining the guests with some lively Malay
cultural dances. These were interspersed with a
delightful exhibition of Kandyan dancing by the
equally delightful Hansani Udawatta.
Dinner was served at about 21.15 hrs. & the 270
guests danced (assuming all of them wiggled their
bottoms to the rhythms of Sky High!!!) till 22.45
hrs. when the Raffle was drawn. The first prize
was a return ticket to Sri Lanka & it was won by
one of the most popular ballroom dancers on our
Sri Lankan social scene, the most debonair &
charismatic Dr. Suren Iyer!! Every person to a man
appeared to be happy that this popular guy had
won it.
Mention must be made here of the spectacular &
tasteful décor created by Kumi. Also, included
here should be the names of Manjula Munasinghe,
Keyboard player, together with Vimal Rajakaruna,
Sound Engineer, & their Band Skyhigh. They
supplied music that was
very agreeable to the ear
& yet not so loud as to
prevent people talking at
their tables, a point sadly
missed by many of our
Sri Lankan Bands that
produce music far too
loud to be enjoyed.
Many of the guests were
extremely pleased with the manner in which
Skyhigh had controlled their decibels & the
complimentary remarks made after the dance,
showed their unmitigated appreciation.
The celebrations ended at 01.00 hrs. & the guests
left with lavish praises for the organizers, & vowed
to return for the SLMA dance in 2015. Enough
said.

Katina Pinkama at East London Buddhist Cultural Centre (Lumbini Viharaya)
The annual Katina Pinkama was elegantly held in
East London Buddhist Cultural Centre (Lumbini
Viharaya) in Plaistow, London recently with the
participation of a vast gathering of Sri Lankan and
Bangaladeshi Buddhist devotees under the
patronage of Ven Makure Mangala Thero the chief
incumbent of the temple. The procession was
sponsored by the family members of Mr. Jayantha
Pattapola and Mr Shamila de Silva with the
support of the Bangaladhesh Buddhist community
together who offered katina cheewara to maha
sangha according to the Buddhist traditions which
was then unanimously decided by the monks to
be offered to Ven.Dr K. Sri Sumana.
The meritorious act comprised of series of
pinkamas which were conducted with the
assistance of Most Ven G Piyadassi Nayaka
Thero (MBE), Chief incumbent of Kingsbury
Temple together with Deputy head monk of
London Buddhist Vihara Ven T.Bandula Thero and
Ven Susara Thero, Chief incumbent of Ilford
Temple Ven P. Hemrathana Thero and Ven
Ananda Thero, Chief incumbent of Lethworth
Dhamma Nekeethanaya Ven A. Samitha Thero,
Chief incumbent Burmees Buddhist Vihaya in
Bekton Ven Kavisara Thero and rest of the
residential Theros of Lumbini Viharaya namely
Ven M Mahanama,Ven Dr K Sirisumana, Ven K
Sumanarathana who observed "Vas" for more
than three months.
From early morning, the devotees started to
assemble at the temple with majority of them
bearing dishes to offer at the 'Dahawal dane,' and
'Pirikara' to be offered to the Maha Sangha. It was
the practice of most devotees to make donations
using different means. Moreover the 'katina' robe
was prepared inside the premises with the help of
many participants and was on display for the
devotees to worship.
Cash donations for the upkeep of the temple were
being collected by inviting devotees to secure
currency notes on a 'Kapruka' to source numerous
articles to full fill the daily needs of the monks.
Ven. Makure Mangala along with other residential
and distinguished guest monks then gathered to
the newly built dhamma hall to commence the
prestigious event. After a brief introductory speech
describing the significance of the 'katina' offering,
Ven.Ananda Thera, before administering 'pan sil',
explained the importance and the value of
participating in such an event. Along with the
fellow monks, he chanted 'pirith' and blessed
those who were present. He stressed that 'pirith'
chanted on that day was most effective and
powerful since the monks had gathered so much
of energy within, having spent three months
meditating. Thereafter 'pirith' water was given
everyone present as a further blessing.
Subsequently arrived the time for the serving of
'dana' and everyone lined up to serve a portion of
rice and other dishes prepared by the participants
with special care and attention to the monks,.
While the monks finish the 'dana' and took their
positions in the hall once again to continue the
ceremony lay crowd too had refreshments, the
offering of the 'katina' robe then took place. It was
offered to Maha Sangha after which the monks
eloquently expressed words of acceptance;
subsequently the monk to whom the robe would
be offered was announced indicating why that
particular monk would receive it.
The ceremony was then continued with the rest of
the offerings being made to the monks. Thereafter
Ven Makure Mangala commenced the final stage
of the ceremony by conducting 'punyanumodana'
for the devotees. The ceremony was then
concluded with lunch being offered to the
participated crowd.

NEWSLANKA
Aries(the Ram) 21st March-20th April
If you feel like you've been running round in circles, slow down.
Here's your chance to work on endurance rather than speed,
both in health and work. You'll also be wanting some time to examine
those neglected emotional needs. Ambition and drive are great,
but not if they make you forget who you are and what you want.
Taurus(the Bull) 21st April - 20th May
There's passion on the horizon - so for once, allow yourself to really
feel it. You can run but you can't hide from emotions: they always get
you in the end. Yes, even cool dudes like you. Anyway, no need to
get too serious just yet. This little patch in the cosmos has been
carefully designed for you to have some honest, emotionally
creative fun.
Gemini(the Twins) 21st May - 20th June
The family needs your special attention again. Give them what you
can, but explain to them - clearly and gently - that you also have a life
to live. No point sliding into boring martyrdom again. It only makes
you angry, and then you're not much good to anyone anyway.
By Saturday, you should have sorted out some really important
issues.
Cancer(the Crab) 21st June - 20th July
That fabulous career of yours is at a temporary standstill. Don't fret,
the planets are simply offering you a chance to explore your inner
self for a while. Take a moment for yourself. No need to worry about
money yet. Get sociable for a week. Potential lovers are waiting
round every corner. Take your pick. Have a good time. Smile.
Leo(the Lion) 21st July - 19th / 22nd Aug
So it's betrayal you're seeing, is it? Determined to convince yourself
that someone you trusted has deceived you? Well yes, you could be
right. But more than likely, you're not. And the only way to find out for
sure is to ask the person concerned. Firstly though, make sure of
your own agendas. There are motives you're even hiding from
yourself.
Virgo(the Virgin) 20th / 23rd Aug - 22nd Sept
It's time to play. And as your attitude shifts, so your work becomes a
lot more fun. You've also managed to organise your working hours to
give you more free time. You might even get in some real
communication with the loved ones. Try putting yourself in the other
person's shoes so you can begin to understand how they feel.
Libra(the Scale) 23rd Sept - 22nd Oct
OK, it's time to drag yourself off that absurd pedestal you've invented,
and be who you really are. You'll be amazed to discover you're just as
loveable even when you're not perfect (in fact, probably more so).
Allowing yourself to become victim to other people's unrealistic
expectations is a trap you don't want to fall into.
Scorpio(the Scorpion) 23rd Oct - 21st Nov
The greatest progress generally takes place under the most peculiar
circumstances. Not that things are too bad on the outside - with half the
planets in your sign, and money, work and love life finally starting to
make sense. It's the inner turmoil we're concerned with, a need to wade
through that dense fog of emotion to find the core.
Sagittarius(the Archer) 22nd Nov - 20th Dec
Time management, you ask with a guffaw? What the heck is that?
Sure, you may think you're too busy to cope, but the truth is, you're
wasting time on insignificant garbage. Flexibility is what's needed,
and maybe even a spot of delegation. It's endurance you're after,
and a new willingness to complete even the most tedious of tasks.
Capricorn(the Goat) 21st Dec - 20th Jan
This week, you're a creative genius - so think of something brilliant.
One of your fabulous ideas will have something to do with travel.
There are long-range advantages to be found out there. If a tedious
legal issue has been dragging on, you'll find an ingenious way to
solve it. Enjoy yourself. See your life as a fun game. It will slowly
become one.
Aquarius(the Water Carrier) 21st Jan -19th Feb
Money is still rolling in, though not necessarily in the ways you had
planned. Keep thinking laterally, and there'll be opportunities you'd
never dreamed of. Take care with the spending this week, though.
The lolly will be melting through your fingers before you've even had
time to count it. It might be an idea to spend some on a calming
massage.
Pisces(the Fishes) 20th Feb - 20th March
No one understands the world's mysteries as well as you do.
But then neither is there anyone with a greater capacity for fear and
negativity. Still, you have more power than you know. So take care
to check out your motives before using your strength to manipulate.
There could be some changes at work this week - maybe even an
exciting new job offer.

Old Bens clinch Veterans’ soccer title
By Bernard Perera
(nation.lk) Old Bens SC carried away the Thilak
Pieris Trophy on offer after winning the Veterans
over-40 Soccer Championship on a toss of a
coin. Bens played the final of the Veterans
Championship organized by the Soccer Masters
Association for the sixth year against Maligawatte
Veterans SC at the St. Benedict’s College ground
recently.
The game was played well by both sides
displaying the best soccer available with these
former players, some of them former national
players. Old Bens had full control of the game for
almost 20 minutes but they failed to get the most
vital goal due to the hard work of Maligawatte
custodian who did yeoman service between the
posts.
During the first session of play Maligawatte
players too invaded the Bens goal area but the
strikers could not get the right direction to score
and the first session ended with a blank score
sheet.
The second half too was evenly contested as
strikers of both teams used their skills to
penetrate each other’s defence with the hope of
scoring the much needed goal. Ten minutes in to
the game Maligawatte Veterans were lucky to get
a penalty which all expected to be the winning
goal. But all hopes were dashed when the striker
failed to find the target.
Strikers of both teams failed to bring victory for
their team and the game ended in scoreless

draw. The referee introduced the tie breaker
system according to the tournament rules to find
the winner of the great final, but this too failed as
both teams scored three goals each. Referee
wanted the tie breakers to continue but the
skipper of Maligawatte Veterans preferred to go
for the toss of a coin which he failed call right.
With this win Old Bens carried away the Thilak
Pieris Trophy and a cash award of Rs. 100,000.
The championship had a participation of 36
teams from all parts of the country including few
teams from North and East.
Maligawatte Veterans Mohamad Hussain was
adjudged as the best goal keeper while Eranga
Karawita was declared as the most Valuable
Player of the Championship.

conversion and CR led 7-0.
They kept on attacking but the Havies defence
stood firm. Then the Park Club made a fine
comeback late in the first half when skipper and
flanker Sudarshana Muthuthanthri scored midright off a rolling maul. Fly half Dulaj Perera failed
to add the extra points.
The Red Shirts increased the lead when Shanaka
Kumara made no mistake with a 40-metre penalty
in the 30th minute and CR led 10-5 at the
‘breather’.
In the sixth minute after resumption, CR and FC
went ahead further when their New Zealand centre
Robbie Malneek scored mid-right off
a three-quarter move. Shanaka
Kumara added the extra points and
the Red Shirts led 17-5.
Then came the Havelocks’ fight
back. They made several
threatening moves with Siaosi
Young and winger Sandun Herath
making some daring runs.
In the 20th minute, off a five-metre
scrum, their scrum half Kavindu
Costa scampered through for a try
mid-right. Fly half Dulaj Perera
added the extra points and the
score read 17-12.
They made several raids on the CR
goal line but the Red Shirts

H.S de Silva of Royal Rugby Fame
by Ken Balendra
(island.lk) It was shocking and saddening to hear
of the death at the age of 74 of H.S., my friend, my
classmate and my rugby captain. He was at our
table at the last old Royalists Rugby Dinner. He
appeared and behaved as a hale
and hearty colleague. He did reach
into his pocket, pull out a syringe to
give himself a jab to keep his
diabetes under control but then
over the past few years that was
not unusual.
H.S. was the eldest son of the late
Mr. Sherman de Silva, the wellknown and successful
businessman, who owned and
lived in a large home on
Cambridge Place, barely a stone’s
throw from College. H.S.’s mother
was a very pleasant and nice lady
who always set additional covers
for lunch. Many of us made use of her generous
hospitality. The food was excellent and her large
family was always happy to have "gate-crashers"
like us for lunch.

Galle's lifestyle is changing
Neloupher Fernando
(dailynews.lk) Galle has a special place in Sri
Lankan hearts. Located at the extreme south west
corner of the island where the shoreline turns east
towards Matara and Hambantota, the ancient port
city of Galle is Sri Lanka's fourth largest town. From
time immemorial, Galle's shore line has been its
greatest asset and its ancient port has been in
succession the mart
of the Portuguese, the
Dutch and the English
whose legacies still
live in its streets.
Centuries later today,
Galle has become a
meeting place for a
cosmopolitan cultural
diversity where people
of different countries,
races and religions
call it 'Home'.
Increasingly Galle is
becoming popular
among international cricket fans, music and
literature fans who hope that Galle will host more
international cricket, more international music
festivals and more international literary festivals to
come.
However what makes Galle very special is her
inheritance to an ancient sea fairing history which
made Sir Emerson Tennent believed that Galle was
the Old Testament port of Tarshish to which King
Solomon sent his merchant ships to procure 'gold,
silver, ivory, apes and peacocks'. For the Arabs,
including Ibn Batuta it was known as Kalah. It is
recorded that from the dawn of navigation Galle
gained prominence on the ancient sea routes
between the Middle East and the Orient. Here spice
vessels were loaded and fighting flotillas rested
awhile to replenishes their stocks of water food and
fuel.
Such riches resulted in Galle's foreign occupation
first by the Portuguese, then Dutch and then
English. It is this cosmopolitan mix of cultures and
races that have resulted in an ambiance peculiarly
Galle. Today there is still enough evidence of
beautiful buildings stamped with Dutch architecture.
Almirahas known as the Galle Almiraha tell how
famous Galle is for her Dutch furniture pieces.
The Galle Fort is Galle's
Dutch heart and soul. It
is here that the best of
the Dutch period
architecture, furniture
and other artifacts are
preserved. Today,
extensive repairs and
conservation has been
carried out to its
ramparts and buildings
in keeping with its
ancient architecture.
A trip from the entry
points on the Southern
Express at Kaduwela or Kottawa to Galle is cut
down by about 2/3 as against the usual 3 hour travel
time from Colombo to Galle via the Galle Road. On
the completion of the impending Outer Circular
Expressway a trip to Galle from the Bandaranayke
International Airport in Katunayake is expected to
take under two hours. While on the other side the
travel time from Galle to the new Mattala Rajapaksa
International Airport will also be drastically reduced
once the expressway is extended to Hambantota.
With travel to Galle becoming quicker, convenient
and being located in-between Colombo and
Hambantota, it is inevitable that vast development
and new business ventures will follow.
New horizons
Galle is becoming a much favored location for both
CHECK THE LATEST ISSUE
& OUR ARCHIVES AT
locals and foreigners. The Galle Urban
Development Authority has identified many projects
to improve selected urban services and public
spaces in Galle. The focus is on enhancing the
attractiveness and livelihood for the residents of
Galle. Who knows Galle may very well be the first
city in the south to showcase vertical living - the
latest in life style trends - a new way of life.
Plans are underway to make the city of Galle a
smart efficient city as well as an ideal residential
location. A general face lift to the Galle town is in the
process of happening; many roads have been
widened beyond recognition and new public
buildings like the state of the art bus stand added.
The two storied bus stand is built with 30 bus bays,
waiting rooms, rest rooms and walkways bridging
over the canal and main road extending to the
railway station to ensure safe and quick access to
the traveler. Landscaping and beautifying the city
with walk ways, beach parks and conserving
heritage buildings is also happening. Other projects
focus on improving deteriorated municipal
infrastructure and services such as traffic
management and public transport, flooding and
water supply systems.
We have also heard of the upcoming all inclusive
ultra modern sports complex for Galle in Dhadella
which will be an added bonus to the many sports
and leisure grounds already in existence. The sports
complex will include a 400 meter athletic track,
outdoor/indoor sports stadiums, tennis netball and
volleyball courts, a swimming pool etc.
Plans are also in the pipeline for the fully fledged
hospital related mixed development project at
Karapitiya and a new court complex at Deligala
junction.
On either side of Galle is a more seaside variation.
Hikkaduwa, 27kms North West of Galle is an
internationally renowned beach resort, famous for its
coral reefs once designated some of the best in the
world. If you are not for snorkeling, the glass bottom
boats here will still give you a feast unmatched
anywhere else in the island. On the other side 6kms
south from Galle is Unawatuna again renowned
worldwide for its calm clean safe waters, surfing and
snorkeling. Unawatuna's Jungle Beach is a very
special beach secluded from the rest which has its
own secret attractions.
Last but not least is the increasing popularity of
Galle Cricket. Cricket perhaps more than other
sports, is characterized by the beauty of its venues.
Galle with its 17th century Fort and Indian Ocean
views ranks with the best settings. The high
ramparts of Galle's Dutch Fort loom behind the
ground, the green hills of the Galle hinterland rise up
behind the stadium and the Indian Ocean embraces
it on either side stretching into infinity. No wonder it
is a breathtaking place to watch cricket. The best
seats in Galle are said to be free.....for there is no
better place to watch cricket than from the ramparts
of the Galle Fort.
So, whether it's a 17th century house or a brand
new apartment in a vertical living complex, who
would want to resist living in a city rich with such
heritage and culture?

H.S. had an excellent career at Royal. In addition
to his studies he was a house captain, a school

holds the record for the number of Bradby Shield

record was equaled recently but not broken. H.S.
was hefty, tall, sturdy and physically fit. So was his

easy.
H.S. was always a dedicated Royalist, rarely
missed our annual 1952 group get-togethers and
any rugby events.
On leaving school in the same year, both of us
played for the first XV CR&FC side in the Clifford

dropped me back at my home in Kollupitiya in his
Morris Minor. He always took a devious route to
Longden Place, via Bullers Road and sounded the
horn a couple of times before reaching the traffic
lights. It took me a few days to realize that he was
trying to attract the attention of his girlfriend,
Neleeka, whom he married later on and with whom
he lived happily ever after. Their two sons have
done extremely well in their chosen professions,
one in the U.S. and the other now back in Sri

By Sa’adi Thawfeeq
(nation.lk) To be appointed captain of the ICC Test
team of the year for 2014 ahead of such current
proven leaders as Michael Clarke, Misbah-ul-Haq,
Alastair Cook and Mahendra Singh Dhoni is
indeed an honour bestowed on the young
shoulders of Angelo Mathews, the Sri Lanka Test
and ODI captain.
Since being elevated to the high office in February
2013 and becoming Sri Lanka’s youngest Test
captain at 25 years and 279 days, Mathews’
personal performances especially with the bat has
improved tremendously and his leadership
qualities progressed equally that no one would
begrudge him being appointed to captain the ICC
Test team of 2014.
Kumar Sangakkara in 2011 is the only other Sri
Lankan player to be named captain of the ICC Test
team, otherwise the honour has gone to
Australian’s Ricky Ponting (2004, 2005 and 2007)
and Michael Clarke (2012), India’s Rahul Dravid
(2006) and MS Dhoni (2009, 2010), South African
Graeme Smith (2008) and England’s Alastair Cook
(2013).
Added responsibilities of captaincy can do
wonders to some players and it could also have an
adverse effect in their careers as well. In Mathews’
case we can see how captaincy can enhance a
cricketer at least in the early period of leadership.
He has captained his country to four Test series
wins with one loss and one draw out of six, the
pinnacle of his achievements thus far is the
maiden Test series win in England where he
averaged 76.5 with a match-saving century in the
first Test at Lord’s on his first appearance on the
hallowed turf and a match winning career best
knock of 160 at Leeds - an innings that was
instrumental in Sri Lanka winning the Test by 100
runs and with it clinching the two-match series 1-0.
For good measure, at
Headingley Mathews
also produced a
career-best
performance in his
bowling taking 4-44.
Former England offspinner Vic Marks
wrote in ‘The
Guardian’: “Mathews
produced a captain’s
innings par excellence
and this should be no
surprise. We are
accustomed to sizing
up the threat of the Sri
Lankan batting line-up
and concluding that it
starts and ends with
Kumar Sangakkara and

players and they have both demonstrated why in
this series – there were glimpses of Jayawardene
wristily dismissing the ball to the boundary in a
manner that had even the non-romantics purring
with pleasure. But since his elevation to the
captaincy Mathews has never been outshone by
this venerable pair.”
Mathews has been in charge of his country in 13
Tests and as captain he has become a more
formidable cricketer. Since taking over the
captaincy he has scored 1386 runs at an average
of 86.62 with three centuries. In that time Sri Lanka
have won six and lost two – to Pakistan in Sharjah
and to South Africa at Galle.
For the majority of his innings Mathews has had to
bat with the tail and at times play the dual role of
shielding his partner as well as try and make runs.
His customary position in the batting order is at
number six where he has made a great number of
his Test career runs 2031 out of 3054 and scored
all four centuries.
The current year 2014 has been an extraordinary
one for Sri Lanka in Test cricket because the top
three leading run-getters are Kumar Sangakkara –
1486 runs (avg. 78.21), Mathews – 1201 (avg.
92.38) and Mahela Jayawardene – 1003 (avg.
55.72), each of them having played 11 Tests. The
trio is the only batsmen to top 1000 runs in the
calendar year so far.
With the impending retirements of Jayawardene
and Sangakkara from all forms of cricket at the
end of the 2015 World Cup, Mathews will have an
opportunity to alleviate himself up the Test batting
order to number four which seems the ideal
position for a cricketer who has brought an
unruffled majesty to his batting. From his early
one-day appearances it was obvious that Mathews
was always been able to hit the ball hard. The
responsibility of captaincy has brought a certainty
in his stroke-play.

Marks said Mathews batted with
“uncomplicated power” - “He stands still,
defends when necessary but when the
right ball arrives he hits it with easy,
uncomplicated power”.
Sri Lanka’s batting stalwart Sangakkara
who has been a close follower of
Mathews’ progression as a cricketer
described his batting “as good as
anyone I have seen”. ““He bats in tough
situations. It’s very hard to find players
for whom these things come so
naturally. Ever since he came into the
side he has done that for us. He has
also improved his technique. He knows
how to bat with the tail and I just love
watching him bat. He is exceptional. He
is batting better than anyone in the side
and batting better than most batsmen in
the world.” What a compliment from the
great man himself.
Mathews is not alone in the ICC Test
team for 2014 he has two of his
team mates with him –
Sangakkara and left-arm spinner
Rangana Herath – only the
second occasion where three Sri
Lankans have made it to the
ICC Test side. In 2008 Mahela
Jayawardene, Sangakkara and
Muthiah Muralitharan were
selected.
Mathews’ greatest test will be

Royal clinch Lennie de Silva Trophy
We could not play our brand
of cricket - Mathews
(island.lk) Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews
says the challenge of performing against India in
their own backyard was never beyond doubt but
he is pained to see that they have failed to play
their brand of cricket.
"It was always going to be tough in India,
whether you are prepared or not prepared. It is
a challenging tour for any team, not only us. Not
many teams have won against India in India.
But we just wanted to play our brand
of cricket, which we haven’t played
in the last three games," a dejected
Mathews said at the post-match
conference after losing the third ODI
by six wickets.
"If we play our brand of cricket and
stop worrying about winning or
losing then I think we can head into
the World Cup pretty high and
confident," the all-rounder added.
Mathews said the batsmen, specially the
youngsters, have let the side down, resulting in
team’s lackluster show.
"We can’t repeat those mistakes time and again.
We flopped in our batting. I thought the powerplay was crucial, we lost four wickets for
minimum runs. We keep doing the same
mistakes and hope that we win, which we
cannot do here. Especially against a quality

Mathews said.
Striking a fluent 118 on Sunday, Mahela
Jayawardene fought a lone battle with a 105-run
partnership with Tillakaratne Dilshan (53) and
Mathews said that it’s time for the youngsters to
step up their game.
"Only Dilshan and Mahela showed some
resistance and all the other batsmen
just threw it away. Either just lack of
concentration or just playing some silly
shots. Going into the World Cup we
need top guns to fire.
"And they are the ones who have been
performing for the last couple of years.
The younger guys need to step up and
grab their opportunities, we can’t keep
chopping and changing. They need to
give their 100 per cent, we see the seniors give
their 100 per cent. They are hungry for runs and
the younger guys need to learn from them," he
added.
The Indian batsmen have continued with their
good showing with Shikhar Dhawan (91) and
Virat Kohli (53) making short work of their 243run chase and Mathews said that the visitors
should take a cue from their opponents.

Mahela willing to open batting
(dailymirror.lk) Senior stalwarts Kumar
Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene had
mixed emotions after their team suffered an
early series loss against India with two games
to go in the five-match ODI series.
Sangakkara, who flew back home stated that
he was making an unwilling exit from the tour,
despite the fact that he was being rested while
Jayawardene stressed that he was willing to
take back the role of an opener after Sri Lanka
constantly failed to make a sound start in the
ended three ODIs.
“Letting me open batting for Sri Lanka is up to
the selectors to decide. I really
would like to open. I have always
wanted to open ever since the
2007 World Cup and even made a
request to the selectors of my
consent. That’s where I have
made the maximum as a batsman.
The management wanted me to be there in the
middle order because we are yet to settle in, in
that area. Let’s hope that our middle order
would click and I get back to open during the
remaining days of my career,” Jayawardene
stated prior to Sri Lanka team’s departure to
Kolkata from Hyderabad.
Sri Lanka lost the first game heavily by 169
runs at Cuttack and the next two games at
Ahmedabad and Hyderabad, the Indians won
by a margin of 6 wickets at both occasions to
wrap up the series early.
Sangakkara, who scored 13, 61 and a rare
golden duck was of full praise for his
compatriot, after being forced to take a rest
ahead of the 7-match series against England
later this month back at home.
“Mahela batted beautifully especially in the last
game. It’s important that whoever is staying
keep on performing.”
But he is well aware of the fact that beating
India in their own backyard is a daunting task,
while expressing his ways of remedies for the
sudden setbacks Sri Lanka has now faced.
With the England series coming up he stated
that the team needs to buckle up their shoes
and get back to the usual winning trend.
“We always knew it’s going to be a tough tour
with the preparations we had. But we are still
playing below par and we still need to get our
rhythm back, we need still need to get back to
our standards. Even though we lost the series
3-0 at the moment, even if we managed to get
competitive in the last two games, we need to
focus on the England tour at home. So I think
that’s the real focus.”
“It’s always hard work to beat a side in their
home soil. When we look back there’s nothing
to do with the mental status of a team. It’s just
we were not up to it. They are well seasoned
playing under home conditions. If we look back,
not only Sri Lanka, others too have struggled.
But taking on India somewhere
else in the world is a different ball
game,” he added while pointing
out the fact that Sri Lanka needs to
do more additions other than
playing their hearts out in the
middle.
“We always are keen to beat a side on their
own soil. But keenness altogether is not
enough; we should have a better game plan, a
better mindset, a better preparation to do so. It
should be a prime aim when we go out to play
another team away, especially in India.”
Meanwhile Jayawardene, who surpassed his
personal milestone of 12,000 ODI runs after his
first century for 2014, was more focused on
helping the youngsters around him with the aim
of winning the remaining two games.
“When we plan out a game we have faced
problems in implementing them and it has been
our setback in the three games played so far.
It’s just that nothing has come in our way so far
in this tour. We need to look seriously into it and
try to make suitable corrections. You need to
look at situations differently and maturely when
you are a senior player. You cannot be selfish
aiming at records. Though I reached an
important milestone in my career and won a
man-of-the-match award, it’s not pleasing to be
in the losing side,” Jayawardene stressed.
Sri Lanka will play India in the fourth ODI at the
Eden Gardens in Kolkata before the two sides
take on each other in the final game at Dhoni’s
hometown Ranchi. In place of Sangakara, Upul

‘Operation Charuka’ squashes Lawyers
(island.lk) The Kandy Doctors repeated their
success of last year when they thumped the
Lawyers by 76 runs in their annual limited over
encounter played at the Asgiriya Stadium.
Charuka Kanakkhewa, who came in at first drop,
batted with controlled aggression to top score in
the match with 62 in 74 balls. For good measure,
he also picked up four wickets with his off spin. He
was the Man of the Match.
Suneth Chandraratne swelled the score with a
breezy 32 off 24 balls. Opener Priyantha Mudalige
showed glimpses of his former self in his knock of
22.
Lawyers’ skipper Manessha Seneviratne staged a
losing battle but never lost heart. He made a
plucky 41.
Doctors 174 for 6 in 30 overs
Priyantha Mudalige 2, Charuka Kanakkhewa, 62,
Suneth Chandraratne 32, Arinda Dharmapala 14,
Rasika Manaturga 12, Suseela Sapuvida 1-33,
Ranjan Ranatunga 1-34, Lasantha Amerasinghe
1-30, Jeevan Basnayake 1-19.
Lawyers 98 in 24.1 overs
Maneesha Seneviratne 41, Supun Ratnayake 17,

SLC seal Penney deal
(dailymirror.lk) Sri Lanka Cricket today signed
Trevor Penney, the former India fielding coach, as
the national team’s fielding coach up to the 2015
Cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand,
SLC confirmed.
Penney, who was Sri Lanka’s assistant coach
during Tom Moody’s tenure as head coach was
earlier considered for the dual role of assistant and
fielding coach as part of a major shake-up in the
coaching set-up.
“We have signed him up to
the World Cup as the fielding
coach,” confirmed SLC CEO
Ashley de Silva.
Penny would fill the void
created by former fielding
coach Ruwan Kalpage, who
chose to take a job with the
Bangladesh national team
instead of pursuing
reappointment in his position.
However the assistant coach position left vacant
by the promotion of Marvan Atapattu to the rank of
head coach will remain vacant.
Once the best fielding side in the region, Sri Lanka
has shown a steady deterioration in 2014 to the
extent that Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews
repeatedly voiced his concerns.
This forced SLC to advertise the post as part of a
major coaching overhaul.
Penney who was said to have earned a good
rapport with the Sri Lankan players during his
previous stint in Sri Lanka had been approached
considering his familiarity with the Sri Lankan setup.
Penney had been India's fielding coach from 2011
before he was asked to leave his post following
India's Test series defeat in England this year. He
was offered a role with India's National Cricket
Academy but chose to end
his contract instead.
Meanwhile, cricketer-turnedpsychologist Jeremy Snape
has also been appointed to
help the national team in the
run-up to the 2015 Cricket
World Cup. Accordingly
Snape will be with the
national team for 17 days
from November 25 to
December 11, 2014.
“Jeremy will be able to enhance individual
performance of the National Team with the World
Cup in mind. This move is bound to add value to
the system at this crucial stage and derive the
maximum output of players to face any challenges
in the upcoming tours and the World Cup 2015 in
particular,” a SLC media released said. (Champika
