ONE HUNDRED FORTY-FOURTH U N D E R G R A D U AT E COMMENCEMENT Wednesday, May 25, 2016 Meadowlands Expo Center • Secaucus, New Jersey THE STEVENS MOTTO To inspire, nurture and educate leaders in tomorrow’s technology-centric environment while contributing to the solution of the most challenging problems of our time. HISTORY OF STEVENS S tevens Institute of Technology is named for the distinguished family known as “America’s First Family of Inventors.” The Stevens family changed the face of American engineering forever, designing steamboats, locomotives, railroad tracks and a host of other technical innovations that powered a new nation. When inventor Edwin A. Stevens died in 1868, his will provided for the establishment of the university that now bears his family’s name. Two years later, in 1870, Stevens Institute of Technology opened, offering a rigorous engineering curriculum leading to the degree of Mechanical Engineer following a course of study firmly grounded both in scientific principles and the humanities. Over subsequent decades, Stevens grew by leaps and bounds, evolving from a relatively small four-year undergraduate college of engineering into a leading global technical institution with particular strengths in key fields such as defense, maritime engineering, management and finance. The university produced two Nobel Prize winners and countless new technologies, including a new process for producing synthetic penicillin. In 1971, Stevens opened its doors to women for the first time. In 1982, Stevens became the first major U.S. educational institution to require students to purchase and use personal computers in the classroom. At approximately this same time, Stevens also developed one of the nation’s first intranets, foretelling a revolution in information technology. Today, Stevens continues to grow, expanding enrollment, facilities and research programs. The university’s collaborations with industry and government include three National Centers of Excellence, designations from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense and Office of Naval Research. Stevens faculty and alumni continue to make a significant impact globally, building upon the legacy of its founding family. BOARD OF TRUSTEES Virginia P. Fischell S cientist and engineer Dr. Robert Fischell has had two pioneering careers: his current one inventing life-saving medical devices, and a former one helping create the modern satellite system that is so critical to communications, entertainment, business and national security. He began his professional life with the U.S. Naval Ordnance Lab as a civilian engineer. After five years, Dr. Fischell accepted a position at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), where he worked for more than 30 years. As chief engineer and associate director of the lab’s space department, he helped create some 50 satellites, including the precursor of the Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) now used worldwide as a location-finder. He concluded his career at APL in 1997 as chief of technology transfer, a department that focuses on transferring space technology to the design of medical devices. Dr. Fischell would go on to become one of the nation’s most prolific inventors, acquiring more than 200 U.S. and international patents. He is a revolutionary pioneer of medical instruments and is known as the father of modern medical stents, lifetime pacemaker batteries and implantable insulin pumps. In 2001 Dr. Fischell founded Angel Medical Systems Inc., a medical device company that develops and manufactures cardiac monitoring and alerting systems. Angel Medical is one of more than half a dozen companies, including Pacesetter Systems, IsoStent, NeuroPace and NeuraLieve, that Dr. Fischell has founded since 1969 to develop life-changing and life-saving inventions, including an implantable device for ending epileptic seizures and a magnetic pulse device that stops migraine headaches. Dr. Fischell is an active member of the University of Maryland community. He joined the A. James Clark School of Engineering in 2003 as Professor of the Practice in the school’s mechanical engineering department. He also serves on the Clark School’s Board of Visitors and as a trustee of the University of Maryland, College Park Foundation. In 2005, the University of Maryland established the Fischell Department of Bioengineering and the Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices, thanks to a $31 million transformational gift by Dr. Fischell and his family. Dr. Fischell is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and has received numerous awards and other recognition for his contributions to the field of biomedical technology, including the Intellectual Property Owners’ Education Foundation Inventor of the Year award for the U.S. in 1984, induction into the Space Technology Hall of Fame in 1988 and in April of this year, induction as a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. Dr. Fischell holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Duke University and a master’s in physics from the University of Maryland as well as honorary doctorates from the University in Maryland in 1996 and The Johns Hopkins University in 2008. He was awarded the TED Prize in 2005 for his work in designing a portable transcranial magnetic stimulator to treat migraine headaches drug-free, and just last week he was at the White House where he was awarded by President Barack Obama the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the nation’s highest honor for technological achievements. In 1895, representatives of American colleges and universities met at Columbia University and prepared a code regulating the design and wearing of academic dress in this country. The code was revised in 1932 and again in 1960. Each member in the procession wears the hood designating the college last attended and degree last received. The hood is worn over the shoulders and is lined with the official color or colors of the college attended. The color on the edging of the hood, a strip of velvet or velveteen about two inches wide, indicates the major field of study. Some of the trimming colors that you will see today include: Engineering, orange Science, golden yellow Humanities, white Business, drab Medicine, green Economics, copper Social Science, citron Environmental Science, antique gold Philosophy, dark blue Music, pink Law, purple Fine Arts, brown Many of our students will also be wearing a number of other items such as cords and stoles. These represent the many fraternal organizations and clubs that each student is a member. stevens.edu
