One of the responsibilities of the GRTC president is to write a paragraph or two to "kick off" each month's newsletter. Just because I assumed the president's gavel, however, doesn't mean that I've transitioned smoothly and completely into this role. Case in point: here it is, the night before the newsletter deadline, and I'm drawing a complete blank as far as what to write about! What a way to start off! I'll try to have my act together by next newsletter! In the meantime, there are races near and far coming up in April , so be sure you check out the race calendar. There are two, count them, TWO, Rochester Runner of the Year races on the April schedule, the Cats Classic Half Marathon (translation: HILLS) on April 22, and the Tom Wahl's 5-Mile Root Beer Run on April 29. (I don't think we intended to schedule two RRY races on back to back weekends, but the Cats Classic is traditionally held on Holy Saturday, and, much as we tried, we weren't able to reschedule Easter.) Also, GRTC has a significant number of race volunteer positions to fill at the upcoming Lilac 10K on May 21~. If Bob Dyjak (volunteer coordinator) gives you a call, please think about helping us out! Last but not least, GOOD LUCK to everyone who is headed for that quaint little social run in Boston on April 171h! We'll be cheering for you (and monitoring the web simul-cast)! Call the GRTC hotline when you get back with the stories of your glories! Play: v. occupy or amuse oneself pleasantly or idly. n. recreation or amusement, esp. as the spontaneous activity of children and young animals. The arrival of spring brings many thoughts, feelings, fresh ideas. As much as I enjoy winter no matter what it throws at us, the snowshoes and inner tubes are put away waiting for next winter's offerings. Spring seems to bring with it so many more possibilities. The trails I haven't seen for months are bug free though the hills seemed to have grown during the winter. And not only will I run those trails, I will hike them . I will test the suspension of my new mountain bike on them. I will teach my children to respect and enjoy them . Teach them how impossible it is to duplicate the smell of spring's blossoms. Teach them how much fun it is to get covered in mud only to wash it off in a waterfall. Recent thoughts have had me thinking about how much of my life is centered around play. Sittin ' still is not a strength of mine. Play is what I do. Not just a hobby, it's my job. Generally, people do not need running shoes or apparel. They come in because this is a lifestyle they have chosen. Perhaps a lifestyle they have found as addicting as I have. Providing a bit of guidance is a lot of fun and rewarding . Spring is a fun time at the store because I am not alone in feeling a renewed sense of energy, lifestyles dormant through the winter waking up. New shoes and clothes with different designs and bright colors add life to the dark, heavy styles of winter. Runners of all talents share their stories of recent races, and upcoming plans . First time marathoners especially light up when sharing their tale . It's always fun to hear someone that found a successful routine, stuck to it and completed 26.2 or maybe their accomplishment was a shorter distance, still a success. Ok, maybe that was a bit flowery but spring is here. Your options are endless! Try something new or continue with an old favorite. Best wishes in all of your pursuits. Mort Nace M. Medved Running & Sports Apparel "Life is the greatest of all games. And as in every game, it is not the statistics that are important. It's how we play that really counts." I'm sure I have met or seen many of you already at the registration tables of area races (handling Day of Race Registration and the Last Minute Sign-Up Panic is mine and .LuAnn Weinstein's specialty). Karen Suitor (a.k. a. "Madame Prez") I guess I should tell you a little bit about myself. (This is not anything really exciting , so if you want to skip the rest of this column I won't be offended ... ) I grew up in northwest Indiana in a medium-sized farming community about 500 miles west of Rochester. I ran short sprints and low hurdles competitively on the girls' track teams through junior high and high school. At the risk of revealing my true age, let me just say that I was in junior high when Title IX was enacted. At that time , the idea of girls competing in sports on a sanctioned school team was so totally incomprehensible to my school's athletic director, that he single handedly decided to put an end to all this girls' sports nonsense. He used the first money earmarked for my school's women 's teams to purchase new uniforms for the 7 Ih_8 Ih _9Ih grade boys' basketball teams. Undaunted , our track coach taught us some of our first lessons about pulling up your bootstraps and smiling . in the face of adversity: at our first post-Title IX track meet, each girl provided her own running shoes, uniform shorts and a white t-shirt, over which we promptly donned the brand new boys' basketball uniform shirts! It was great! Anyway, back to my autobiography ... While I was fast enough to letter in girls' track at my small high school, my skills weren't sufficient for college level competition . After high school I officially became a recreational runner. My interest in and dedication to running came and went many times over the following decade(s) as I physically and emotionally battered my body with soccer, volleyball , motorcycle riding , and marriage. I fared pretty well at the first three, but the last one didn't work out too well. When I became another divorce statistic some years back, I turned to my past love of running , just as many other folks have done, to help me endure and persevere through the sad times and low pOints. I started by running two miles a day after work with my dogs. A distance of five miles at that time was just too long, there was no way I could ever run that distance. (Remember, all my past training had been in short distances; the longest distance I ever ran in high school was a Yo mile warm-up, and there were many times I thought that was going to kill me!) Just for grins, I signed up for a few local 5K's and I also offered to help at a few races. That was eight plus years ago. I now have a boatload of great friends in the running community and four complete marathons to my credit . I'll fill in the details of recent years some other time , because there is something more important I want to talk about. -5- · . That more important something is - YOUI YOU are a member of GRTC , and that makes you an especially important person to me! Without you and the other members, the Greater Rochester Track Club does not exist. This is YOUR club! To that extent, we (the club directors) want to know how you feel about a number of the issues we, the club, are confronting : o o o o What value do you get from your annual membership? What is the club doing "right?" Where do we need to improve to increase the your perceived value of your membership? What value do you place on the club newsletter, especially now that most of the same information is available on-line from a variety of sources? How would feel about changing the club name to put more emphasis on "running?" At some point during the month of April , I will be doing an informal phone survey to try to answer some of these questions. I'm planning to pick names at random , but if you have specific comments that you are willing to share, please call the GRTC Hotline, leave me your name, phone number and when good time to call is, and I'll be sure to get in touch with you . If you are reading this and you are not a GRTC member but you were at one time, I am particularly interested in talking to you! Obviously you were not getting the value you expected from your club membership; I'd like to know what concerns you have and what would have made the difference in your decision not to renew your membership. Again , please call the hotline and leave me a message. In closing , I will do my best to provide credible leadership for OUR club. Bob Oyjak is a tough act to follow in this role , but hopefully in time, with assistance from YOU , we'll be able to do some great things for the Rochester running community. Valvo Canal Park 31-G Erie Canal Drive Rochester, New York 14626 MORTON'S NEUROMA The most common nerve problem of the foot is that of interdigital neuritis . The interdigital neuroma is actually an enlargement or inflammation of the nerve and it occurs most often in the area between the metatarsal heads and the base of adjacent toes. The pain associated with this type of neuritis is a cramping type and is most often found in the second or third interspace. Athletes can be more susceptible to this problem because they put tremendous pressure on the forefoot when they run . The symptoms must be differentiated from capsulitis and tendonitis as well as bursitis. One must be careful to also rule out a fracture , especially in a runner. Often there is an actual inflammatory process occurring around the nerve in which there will be a bursitis associated with the neuritis. Initial treatment consists of an injection into the interspace of a mixture of anesthetic, such as lidocaine, and a corticosteroid . In addition , biomechanical treatment, such as orthotics, may be introduced in an attempt to reduce abnormal metatarsal head movements. It is these movements, which most likely contribute to the formation of the neuritis. Examination of the interspace may reveal a "clicking sensation" which corresponds to the movement of the neuroma. Initially, there may be pain shooting both into the foot and the toes when this mass is palpated . With progression of treatment this pain should subside . I have found that the success rate of this form of conservative treatment is approximately 50% . More radical treatment consists of surgical removal of the inflamed nerve branch itself. This may leave the toes feeling numb afterwards. In the literature, Morton's neuroma is the presence of an interdigital neuritis only in the third webspace . I hesitate using this term only because it leads the patient into believing that a neuroma is a tumor or cancer. It is neither. I prefer to use the term interdigital neuritis regardless of the location . David J . Valvo , D.P.M. is Q local podiatrist in Rochester, New York. "I don 't know if 1 need to see a nutritionist or a psychologist. 1 often devour a box of crackers in the blink of an eye. 1 feel like ['m binge-eating ... and that scares me." "I try nol to keep cookies in the house, because when they' re there, 1 eat them- too many of them." For many active people, food is a feared enemy. Runners, skaters, and rowers alike try to stay away from it. They endure hunger all day. When they do succomb to food, their eating tends to be a fast and furious frenzy that's seeminglyout-of-control. Some of these clients have a full-blown eating disorder, but the majority are simply hungry. Too hungry. Being hungry all the time is not a personality quirk . Rather, hunger is the body's request for fuel. Hunger is a very powerful physiological force that creates a strong desire to eat. Unfortuantely, in our thin-is-in society, many active people fail to honor this simple request because they fear food as being fattening. The thought of eating elicits a sense of panic: "Oh no, if! eat, I'll get fat." Not the case. Most athletes eat without getting fat! Food, after all, is fuel. But problems do arise when food is denied and deprived (as happens with a strict reducing diet), when hunger becomes the norm. The result is an abnormal physiological state that is known as starvation .. Starvation has been inflicted upon many people, including third world natives suffering from famines, povcrty~ stricken people at the end of the month when no food money is left, and victims of the World War n concentration camps. Starvation is also common among athletes who are intent on losing weight. These include wrestlers, lightweight rowers, jockeys and others who participate in sports with weight limits, as well as the athletes who simply believe thinner is better and diet themselves to (supposed) perfection. The question arises: What's the cost of starvation? What happens to the body and the mind when food is restricted and body weight is abnormally low? In 1950, Ancel Keys and his colleagues at the University of Mionesota studied the physiology of starvation. They carefully monitored 36 young, healthy, psychologically normal men who for 6 months were allowed to eat only half their normal intake (similar to a strict reducing diet or anorectic eating). For 3 months prior to this semi-starvation diet, the researchers carefully studied each man's behaviors, personality, and eating patterns. The men were then observed for three to nine months of refeeding. As their body weight fell to 25% below baseline, the researchers learned that many of the symptoms that might have been thought to be specific to anorexia or bulimia were actually the result of starvation. The most striking change was a dramatic increase with food preoccupation. The subjects, similar to people with anorexia, thought about food all the time. They talked about it, read about it, dreamed about it, and even collected recipes. They dramatically increased their consumption of coffee and tea, and chewed gum excessively. They became depressed, had severe mood swings, experienced irritability, anger and anxiety. They became withdrawn, had little sexual interest, and lost their sense of humor. They had cold hands and feet, felt weak and dizzy, and their hair fell out. Their basal metabolic rate (the amount offood needed to exist) dropped by 40% as the body adapted to conserve energy. (Do these changes sound familiar to anyone you know?) During the study, some of the men were unable to maintain control over food; they would binge eat if the opportunity presented itself During the refeeding period, many of the men ate continuously- big meals followed by snacking. Several ate until they were uncomfortably full, became nauseous, and then vomited. These abnormal eating behaviors lasted for about 5 months; by 8 months, most of them regained their standard eating behaviors. On average, they initially regained 10% more than their original weight, but then gradually lost that excess and returned close to their baseline weight. So what can we learn from this starvation study? I . Preoccupation with food is a sign your body is too hungry. Hunger creates a very strong physiological drive to eat. 2. Binge eating stems from starvation. If you worry about being unable to stop eating once you start, you have likely -24- gotten too hungry. - . 3. Weight is more than a matter of will power. That is, if you lose weight, your body will fight to return to a genetically normal leveL 4 . Dieters who restrict to the point of semi-starvation are likely to regain the weight they lost-plus more. Hence, if yoU want to permanently lose weight, you simply need to push yourself away from the dinner tab le when you are content but not stuffed, when you can say to yourself, "I've had enough to eat. I could have more but I'd rather not because I'd rather be a little leaner." You might find it helpful to know how many calories you are supposed to eat to maintain or to lose weight. To do this, simply• Take your weight and multiely it by 10 . This gives your resting metabolic rate (RMR, the amount of energy you need to simply exist, pump blood, breathe, etc.). If you weigh 140 pounds, yourRMR is about 1,400 calories-the amount you 'd burn if you were to run for 14 miles! • Add to your RMR about half that number for activities of daily living. For example, if you weigh 140 Ibs. and are moderately active (without your purposeful exercise) you need about 700 calories to come and go. • Next, add calories for purposeful exercise. For example, a 140 pound person would need about 1,400 calories (RMR) + 700 (daily activity) + 300 (for 30 minutes of aerobic activity) = 2,400 calories to maintain weight. To lose weight, deduct 20%-10 about 1,900. This translates into 600 calories for breakfast/snack, 700 for lunch/snack, and 600 for dinner/snack- and that's the reducing diet I The next time you get into an eating frenzy and wonder if you are borderline bulimic, calculate your day's intake. You' ll likely see a huge discrepancy between what you have eaten and what your body deserves.Recognize hunger 's power-and stop getting too hungry! THE ATHLETE'S KITCHEN Copyright: Nancy Clark, MS, RD March, 2000 FOOD VARIETY: The Spice of Life "My diet is so boring" .! eat the same foods every day." "The waitress at the cafe no longer asks me what I want for breakfast. She knows I'll have black coffee, orange juice, and a toasted bagel without cream cheese." "Is it bad to eat the same foods day after day ,,?" Many athletes eat the same foods every day, day after day, week after week, year after year. Their typical menu is based upon bagels, turkey breast, pasta, chicken breast, frozen yogurt, and pretzels. This repetition keeps life simple, ehmmates decISIons, and feels safe-safe from "getting fat" by eating foods with unknown calories, as well as safe from eating the "wrong food" which might contribute to digestive upset while exercising. Some athletes are content with their self described "boring diet. " But if you eat a repetitive diet and wonder about the healthfulness of this pattern, you might want to think about the benefits of eating more of a variety of foods . • Eatmg a vanety of food s helps you consume a wider variety of nutrients. For example, if your only fruit is apples, you 'll fail 10 get the folic acid that's found in oranges. If your primary protem source is chicken b,reast, you'll miss out on the iron and zinc that 's better found in beef -25- • Eating a variety offoods reduces the chances of getting excessive amounts of a food that might be harmful. For example, ifthe grapes you eat every day happen to have a bad pesticide on them, you'll consume a higher dose than if you were to alternate grapes with bananas, oranges, and kiwi. Or, if you eat several nutrient fortified energy bars every day, you might get too much of one mineral, which could create an imbalance with other another mineral eaten in smaller amounts . o • Eating a variety of foods reduces the needs for supplements. By eating many types of foods, you can better consume more ofthe over 600 known compounds that food offers including not only the 13 known vitamins and 22 essential minerals, but also numerous other minerals, phytochemicals, fibers, and health protectors found in whole foods. Whole foods offer more nutrients, and better absorbed nutrients, than do pills. For example, 7the iron in meat is absorbed better than that in pills. 7the fiber in bran cereal is preferable to taking a fiber supplement or laxatives. 7getting calcium from milk replaces the need for calcium supplements. Calcium aside milk drinkers have a diet that is overall more nutrient dense compared to milk abstainers. Forget the story: "I don '; drink milk. ..! take a calcium supplement instead." You fool only yourself by thinking a pill (or 2 or 20) can replace a variety of whole foods! • Eating a variety of foods enhances your overall health. Studies suggest that people who eat from a wide variety of food groups tend to be healthier and have a reduced risk of disease, including heart disease and diabetes. At each meal, you should plan to eat from at least three of the five foods groups: I . grain, 2. fruit, 3. vegetable, 4. meat, fish, poultry, nuts, beans, and other protein-rich foods, and 5. low fat milk, yogurt, dairy and other calcium-rich foods. You should also eat different types offoods within each group. For example, by eating a variety of differently colored fruits and vegetables (tomatoes, carrots, spinach, oranges, watermelon, blueberries), you will consume a variety of the anti-oxidants that protect against the formation of cataracts in your eyes. . Because eating a variety of foods is so important, the nutrition professionals in Australia have launched a food campaign to encourage Australians to eat 20 to 30 different foods a week. Currently, most Australians eat only 15 to 18 different foods . I'd dare say the same holds true in this country (if not fewer)! Let's count the number of foods typically eaten by two types of active people: Example #1. The weight-conscious exerciser: 1. bagel, 2. turkey breast, 3. sandwich bread, 4. lettuce, S. tomato, 6. pretzels, 7. apple, 8. energy bar, 9. yogurt, 10. spaghetti, II. spaghetti sauce, 12. broccoli, 13. fatfree frozen yogurt. Oops ... only 13! Example #2. Junk food Junkie: 1. coffee, 2. Big Mac, 3. Coke, 4. chocolate chip cookies, S. M&Ms, 6. pizza, 7. Chinese fried rice, 8. ice cream, 9. potato chips, 10. beer. (How many of these items even count towards "real" food ... ???) What's your number? Now, it's your turn to do your math! For the fun of it (and for your education, as well), write down what you eat for a week and count the number of different foods you consume. How did you do? If the number looks grim, here are some tips for enhancing food variety: Bagels: select from a variety-pumpernickel, rye, whole wheat, poppy, sunflower seed. Top with jam, peanut butter, almond butter, low fat cottage cheese, lite cream cheese, lox. Sandwich fillings : there's life beyond turkey breast ! Lean roast beef(the kind you can get in a deli) is a fine alternative and offers far more vitamins and minerals. Peanut butter provides positive fats that lower the risk of heart disease. Tuna with lite mayo is OK, as is hummus. Snacks: Be creative and bypass yet another rice cake, pretzel, or energy bar. How about almonds and dried fruit, yogurt with granola, apple with low fat cheese, vegetable soup with rye crackers, graham crackers with peanut butter? Target two foods per snack (and three+ foods per meal). Consider cutting back on energy bars for routine snacks. Most are little more than sugar coated vitamin pills with a little added protein. They commonly lack fiber and .phytochemicals-the important components of the fruits they tend to displace from the athlete's snack menu. -26- £l!st~ Pasta is not a vitamin packed food; the tomato sauce on top and the veggies on the side add the nutritional power to the pasta meal, as does the protein in the lean bee~ turkey, tofu or beans added to the sauce. Round out the meal with low fat milk, salad (lettuce, carrot, pepper, tomato), crusty whole grain bread, and berries for dessert. you' l! enjoy a 10-food sports meal that invests in both performance & healt h! Better yet, RENEW EARLVI -27- GRTC Board of Directors Meeting Wednesday March 15,2000 Attendees: Board Members: Bob Dyjak, John Hultz, Kris Kessler, Brad Matthews, Karen Suitor, Stacey VanDenburgh and Pete Van Peursem. The minutes of the January 2000 meeting were approved as published in the newsletter. There was no February 2000 Board meeting. Treasurer 's Report: Not available. Membership stands at 472. The Race Director's Seminar held on February 29 was well received with 24 persons in attendance. The seminar was led by our own Bob Dyjak and George Tillson, and Dave Oja, President of the Syracuse Chargers Track Club. It was a very informative session with lots of bandouts to supplement the presentations. We are in need of a race director for the Couple's Run that was planned to be beld the weekend before Labor Day this year. Call and leave a message on the GRTC Hotline (234-0565) if you are interested. The 2000 Race Calendar was publisbed in the Rocbester Democrat & Chronicle on Sunday, March 12. Contact Bob Dyjak andlor Roger Howe with any additions or corrections; they will be updated in the Newsletter and forwarded to Jim Castor of the D & C. The Lilac 10K is scheduled for Sunday May 21". GRTC and GVH will be providing volunteers for the race. Leave a message on the club Hotline if you would like to volunteer. Kris Kessler checked into the possibility of getting a price reduction if we provided the newsletter to East Ridge Quickprint electronically rather than in hardcopy form. Electronically, the cost variable would be the total number of pages; photos would not affect cost. Currently, photos are sent out to a printer that adds to the lead-time and cost. A non-glossy cover would also reduce costs. Switching to an 11 x 17 format may not reduce costs as the newsletter would have to be folded and either stapled shut or closed with an adhesive piece. The Board agreed to pursue the costs and ramifications of changing the club name. Karen Suitor will contact a lawyer familiar with non-profit organizations. Despite the apparent success of last year 's inaugural 5k Canal Run in Genesee Valley Park it appears that i will not be reviewed. It was unknown if the NYS Canal Corporation and NYS Hospitality and Tourism Association were continuing the series at all. The Board discussed conducting it as a club directed event though it appears unlikely given the short amount of time to organize and promote it and the lack of a race director. The next Board of Directors meeting will be Tuesday, April 11th at 7:00 PM at the Mid-Town Athletic Club. Minutes respectfully submitted by Secretary John Hultz. -28- INFORMAL RUNNING GROUPS Sagd Buncb ...
