City Year unites a diverse corps of young adults, ages 17 to 24, for a demanding year of full-time community service, leadership development and civic engagement. Lead investors in City Year include The Atlantic Philanthropies, Cisco Systems, Inc., Comcast, HP, MFS Investment Management ®, and The Timberland Company. City Year is a proud member of AmeriCorps. To the City Year Community: With a 1,000-member corps, City Year deepened its impact this year, increasing the number of youth served via in-school partnerships by 60%, the number served in after-school programs by more than 35%, and the number of Camp City Year attendees by 8% over the previous year. As we began our 14th year, we proudly witnessed more than 1,000 idealistic young leaders pledge to serve America as City Year corps members – our largest corps yet! Inspired by the call to serve their country, they came from 47 states and were selected from a pool of nearly 3,000 applicants. Together, these corps members provided more than 1.2 million hours of service over the course of the year, serving nearly 100,000 children and engaging more than 56,000 citizens. We were delighted to welcome Comcast as a National Leadership Sponsor, partnering with us on leadership development and training initiatives, as well as sponsoring our first-ever national public service announcement campaign and providing more than $1 million in airtime in-kind. Hours Served 1,224,767 City Year made great progress toward the goal of launching its 14th program in New York City in the fall of 2003. A small start-up team led hundreds of volunteers in physical service projects, partnering with corporate champions in New York City’s poorest neighborhoods. This year we also marked the completion of Jeff Swartz’ eight dedicated years of service as Chair Children Served 99,565 of City Year’s National Board of Trustees. Jeff remains on our Board where he continues to have a profound impact on City Year policy and programs. As we thanked Jeff for his service, we welcomed incoming Board Chair Eli Segal, an accomplished businessman, public servant and national service Citizens Engaged 56,188 trailblazer who has served as a deeply committed board member for four years. In May, we held a truly historic Starry Starry Night in Boston, raising nearly $1.3 million for City Year. Our special guests - The Honorable William J. Clinton, Senator Edward Kennedy, Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino - inspired us that night with their remarks and Young Heroes 991 (a youth leadership and service corps launched The Challenge Campaign for City Year, a campaign to match The Atlantic Philanthropies’ $10 of middle school students) City Heroes continue to support us with their actions on behalf of national service. This same evening, we officially million gift (described in more detail on page 14). 1,358 (a youth leadership and service corps That same month, we welcomed the second class of Clinton Democracy Fellows - 10 young leaders from South Africa – who encouraged, challenged and impressed us with their ideas and their idealism. Now they are home in South Africa, already putting into practice what they learned about citizen service of high school students) through City Year, and sharing advice to make the Fellowship stronger for future classes. Camp City Year 4,838 (a safe and educational program In June we brought our entire corps to Washington, D.C. for cyzygy ’03, our annual convention of idealism. We left the Capital knowing Service Partners 817 that we increased awareness and understanding of what City Year and, by extension, national service can accomplish. The importance of City Year’s work as an “action tank” was never clearer, as we learned just after Corporate Sponsors 565 cyzygy that AmeriCorps funding would be drastically cut and the future of national service in America was at risk. In the summer of 2003, we leveraged cyzygy, the relationships it helped us establish, and our 14 years of service as we united with more than 90 AmeriCorps organizations in a campaign to restore funding. We thank so many of you who shared words of encouragement and financial support during this challenging time. As we look back on a very strong year of service inspired by the corps, by our service partners, by our champions, and by the communities and nation we serve, we know that you share our vision of making national service available to all Americans, and we know that with your help, we can make that vision a reality. We thank you for your continued support and are pleased to present the 2003 City Year Annual Report. The trip had two very important outcomes for City Year’s nascent international efforts: one, that former South African President Nelson Mandela agreed to serve as the Patron in Chief of City Year’s work in South Africa; the other, that “The thing that will be unique about the City Year program in South Africa is that nobody, even now, has seen young black and white kids show up every day for a year in a community and work together on projects on this scale.” President Clinton expressed his deep commitment to and support of City Year’s citizen service initiatives beyond U.S. – President William J. Clinton borders, beginning in South Africa. With these two extraordinary champions in place, and with the full support of City Year’s National Board of Trustees, City Year began a strategic and deliberate effort to extend its international mission, work and objectives in 2003. Initiatives now underway support City Year’s goal to be a leading global institution for building democracy through demonstrating, promoting, and improving the concept of citizen service around the world. City Year is building capacity to operate a scalable Clinton Democracy Fellowship program, and is developing plans to launch and manage multiple City Year sites around the world. Building on the success of the Clinton Democracy Fellowship, which completed its pilot program in the summer of 2002, the 2003 Fellowship program brought 10 young leaders from South Africa to the United States to share strategies with leading U.S. citizen service practitioners, policymakers, academics, social entrepreneurs, private sector leaders and public officials. The program includes citizen service immersion at City Year sites, The Clinton Democracy Fellowship at City Year engages emerging citizen service policy meetings, discussions of social entrepreneurship strategies and a citizen service curriculum focusing on the history of citizen service, social leaders from outside the United States who are between the ages of 21 and 35 and who have a strong interest in using social entrepreneurship, and citizen service programs and policymaking to build a stronger democracy. The program’s ultimate goal is to inspire the development of citizen service programs and policies around the world. entrepreneurship and U.S. democracy. The 10-week multi-city U.S. curriculum was followed by post-residential elements of the program in South Africa. Major support for City Year’s international work comes from the generosity of the following individuals and foundations: Anita and Josh Bekenstein Janine Boneparth Holly Davidson Denise Dupre and Mark Nunnelly Jennifer Eplett Reilly and Sean Reilly Corrine and Tim Ferguson Just as the Fellows were returning to South Africa, where Rosabeth Moss Kanter and Barry Stein they are putting what they learned to work to help their Anne Lovett and Steve Woodsum country, City Year began building the foundation for City Jeryl and Steve Oristaglio Year South Africa, its first international site. ATLANTIC PHILANTHROPIES & THE CITY YEAR CHALLENGE The City Year Challenge, a campaign to build 21st century capacities for City Year’s future, was publicly announced in May at reception with special guests The Honorable William J. Clinton, U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy, Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino. The announcement took place at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum in Boston. The investments made possible by The City Year Challenge campaign will dramatically increase City Year’s impact, scale, and sustainability. Equally important, the investments will leverage the organization’s service initiatives, leadership development concepts, and public policy initiatives to help grow and develop the national service field in the United States and, for the first time, internationally. At the reception, Alan Ruby, Executive Vice President for The Atlantic Philanthropies, announced that the foundation was making a $10 million challenge grant to this campaign after evaluating City Year’s rigorous two-year strategic planning process. This grant -- the largest private gift in City Year’s history -- must be matched two-to-one over four years, requiring City Year to raise $20 million to receive the $10 million in full. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free of material misstatement. We believe that our audits provide a reasonable basis for our opinion. In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of City Year as of June 30, 2003 and 2002, and the changes in its net assets and its cash flows for the years then ended in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America.
