Koper Student-Driven MUSTANG Volume 1, Issue 3 MATTERS Marygrove College Students Own the Campus During Student Life Week The Department of Student Life really outdid itself with its recent Student Life Week which was February 11th through February 15th. The week was opened with the Mustang Matters hosting the Student Organization Fair which gave students an opportunity to mingle with some of the organizations that are here at Marygrove and to join as well. On Tuesday, the Greeks hosted a movie night that featured “School Daze” directed by Spike Lee. The projector screen was a nice touch to turn the Multi-purpose room into a Photo by D. Burkes movie theatre for the night. Even though there were sound leveling problems, the night was very worthwhile. Look forward to many other movie nights. The hypest day of the week was that of Green and Gold Day which was a big, hooting-nanny of a pep rally. Mr. Jonathan Griffin was the MC of the afternoon and gave a stunning monologue of “Soldier with a Secret”, psss psss. The Main Dining Hall was swaying to the glorious vocals of Ms. Jessica Knott as she sung an acapella rendition of Whitney Houston’s, “I Believe the Children are our Future”. The Cheer Team and Dance Squad as usual rocked the house with their graceful moves and urban luster. The Fashion Show brought about many shouts, whistles, and such as Marygrove students strutted the catwalk. Then the raffle drawing that followed granted Robert Baskerville and Ebony Jackson a business makeover by Mignonne Orr so that they will look their best for any and all future career interviews. The evening of Valentines Day of Thursday gave students, staff, and faculty an outlet to unwind and act themselves within the gates of Marygrove. The mood was set with a live band led by MG’s own Frank Simmons Student Life 3 and the night was led on by the digital turntable of Sidney Harris another one of MG’s finest. The week comes to a close with the 21-andCommunity Issues 6 up crowd mellowing out at the Marygrove Jazz House. This new year is the start of many new things for the Marygrove community. The Spiritual Affirmations 8 many new faces here at Marygrove are really dedicating themselves to turn over the school and the sponsored events to the students. This organization just gave away a book scholarship in the 2nd week of Jan. and will be doing so once again in the near future. This semester’s scholarship was awarded to B-Ball Star “Rodney Phillips”. There was a recent contest that included a $20 gift card to DormBuys.com and a $15 gift card to the Bookstore. The prize were presented at Green and Gold Day of Student Life Week. Felicia Melton answered these questions correct: Theta-Tau hosts their Annual Scholarship Breakfast April 5th. From word on campus, this event is one not to miss. In addition, two weeks of events are held by the ladies, one in December, another arriving in March. These events cover five platforms which you can learn more about at the Theta-Tau web site. This sorority held strong insightful discussions on how to improve Black Families in January and their inspiring discussions continue in variation during “Skee Week” (March the 31st to April 5th). During that time there will be a Powerful Technology Seminar that is sure to empower anyone present. Be sure to look it up on the web site mentioned below! • • • • Who are Fr. Mustang Matters 5 STUDENT LIFE Marygrove Gets Formal for Valentine Kalyjee Jones There were lap dances and there was a lot of crazy energy. There was a lot of bumping and grinding… people were feeling like my boy Kells when he sang, “I don’t see nothing wrong, ohhh, with a little bump and grind!!” Everyone was looking so fly, grown, and sexy. There should have been a prize for best dressed because lawd’ knows that there was some sexy at this party. There was a live band and a live performance by Frank Simmons. Over all, it was a very classy event that everyone was able to enjoy. There were refreshments, but everyone seemed to like the fruit and cookies better than the spaghetti. The punch was delicious. The decorations were beautiful. The aspect about the decorations that made it even more special was the entrance into the dance. The balloons were very creative and pretty, you could tell that this was not a cheap affair. I feel that everyone got there ten dollars worth. When sweetest day comes around, let’s hope that it is even more beautiful. We have to make sure that we have sweetie- o- grams and a sale to make Mustang Matters some extra cash. Well all in all, the Valentines Day event was a night to remember. Pictures were taken so that the memories could last even longer, perhaps a lifetime. Let’s make sure to make the next event even more special and an even larger event. 6 Mustang Matters COMMUNITY ISSUES Provided by CNN.com Obama on the Issues Brought to you by Lydia Ballard *Abortion* Supports abortion rights. *Immigration* Supported Bush-backed immigration reform legislation, which would have increased funding and improved border security technology, improved enforcement of existing laws, and provided a legal path to citizenship for some illegal immigrants. I had the opportunity to attend the show this year, and found many exhibits quite intriguing. One of the things that caught my eye was the Chinese Buick Riviera concept (its namesake being one of the divisions long-discontinued vehicles). Painted in a beautiful tint of blue, this startling beauty wowed the crowds. Sadly, Buick isn’t currently intent on reviving its beloved luxury coupe. And speaking of China, Changfeng Motor Group is planning on bringing their automobiles to the U.S. Last year, their production figures reached 200,000 units, permitting this corporation to enter the top ten list in automotive trade. I will look forward to updating you on when Changfeng’s six current models arrive on these chores. The University of Michigan had their solar car on display. Dubbed the Continuum, it finished seventh in the World Solar Challenge in Adelaide, Australia last October. Despite a breakdown mid-race, costing ten hours of race time, the team and vehicle rebounded to pass 25 other teams and secure its coveted top-ten position I look forward to more great achievements from the U of M Solar Team. State Farm Insurance had an exhibit as well. Further, they built a race car simulator out of a late-model Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Though I didn’t enter for the contest, which included a gift certificate for the fastest driver, I marveled as the contestants tried to lap their way around the track. They should really bring this back next year. It’s a lot of fun, whether you’re driving or spectating! And of course, I couldn’t visit Cobo without seeing the Smart exhibit. The vehicle is powered by a 3cylinder gasoline motor, and comes equipped with all of the technological and safety features one would expect for a hefty price tag. Thankfully, a loaded one will probably only cost you $15,000. One of the big differences this year was the size of the domestic exhibits in comparison to the foreign ones. The big three were out in full force and grand size, promoting Chrysler’s LX platform (used for the Dodge Charger, Magnum, and Chrysler 300), Pontiac’s G8, and the Ford Taurus and its Mercury cousin, the Sable. It is hard to scrape much more than the surface of such a grand event, but alas, the highlights would keep spilling over into the other sections of this paper. So, until next time, I will see you around. When facing a crisis or in the midst of a stressful situation that won’t resolve itself. This should serve as your reminder: your mind and emotions are the most powerful tools you have — use them wisely. Affirmations: • Nothing can disturb me in this world when I am not attached to the outcome. My mind is powerful. It is an amazing tool that I can use to better my body, my spirit, and my life. Each day, I use this powerful tool wisely. Bible verse: Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2 May God add a blessing to the reader of this encouraging word! The Recital @ Marygrove Darrel Burkes When you hear the incredible voice of soul, the rehearsed version of a timeless classic or the sharp sound of talented pianist playing through the halls of Madame Cadillac, you know it has to be Marygrove’s finest. Several students and faculty members have many reasons to be proud of at the special “Faculty Recital” event. The recital began in the Sacred Heart chapel where Jessica Knott sings in soprano a melodic version of an opera classic by Vincenzo Bellini, “Vaga luna che inargent”, which was known for it’s Italian, romantic lyrics. With a long walk to the Denk Chapman L to R Jonathan Griffin, LaNyck Washinton, Jessica Knott, Kimberly Claxton Hall for more fine entertainment, the crowd was greeted by a well know face on campus, Jonathan Griffin. Performing the 1960s musical segment from the Broadway theater performance “Everybody Says Don’t”, by Stephen Sondheim, Jonathan showed true expressive art though this whimsical satire with vivid emotions. The day had not ended there, especially with a favorite to Marygrove showing her talents on the piano; of coarse I’m referring to Rachel Willis reciting Prelude no. 2 & 6 by Robert Vandall. The alluring sound of Rachel’s recited piece was simply rapturous to its audience. Afterwards, the room fell into silence for the next performer whom happened to be a very special friend of mine; LaNyck Washington, conveying her version of “Vain” by the African-American composer and professor, Adolphus Hailstork, in soprano. With a voice of harmony and a devotion to music, LaNyck is certainly gifted in the field of music. Last but certainly not least, Kimberly Claxton shows another side of pitch when the room fills with a voice that would only be acceptable in an opera house. The piece by Giuseppe Giordani, “Caro mio ben”, sounded exquisite. Beautiful with its consistence tone, Kimberley soothed the hearts of her captive audience throughout the end of the recital. Everyone that was involved has done an exemplary job of combining art and talent into one event of memorable classics. If this event proved anything, it proved that Marygrove has done an excellent task in cultivating student prodigies. Put on your spunky outfit and go down into your internal self looking for clues to the why, when and how of your romantic desires. Strap on your oxygen tanks and dive into the darkest, stillest waters of your emotional life. Put on your bathing suit and bask in the sunshine along the edge of your consciousness. You could learn a lot about yourself this month. In the long run, that will make romance come that much more naturally. On the 5th, slow down your pursuit of somebody -- for now. On the 9th, slow down even further. By the 10th and 11th, the time is right to make your move. So do it, and don't be surprised if you get better-than-expected results. On the 15th, communication is easier than you imagined it could be (great!). On the 21st and 22nd, you and this lovely somebody might have to deal with the ho-hum realities of day-to-day life. Do it. You could be surprised at how much fun it is! On the 28th and 29th, finish the month with some more exploration. Taurus April 20 - May 20 You could strike up quite a flirtation with a stranger from a distant land on the 1st or 2nd. Play close attention to this oh-so-engaging somebody, as they could teach you a lot about your own assumptions regarding love, and show you other ways of looking at things. Oh, and they might kiss you, too (sometime down the road), which would be an awfully nice experience! On the 6th, you and a potential partner could be having some power struggles. Isn't it a bit early for this? Or do they just have some things that need sorting out before they can get involved? Give them space. On the 12th and 13th, you're a super-romantic kissinducing machine. Everybody wants to be with you. All you have to do is take your pick! By the 17th, it's extremely important that you tell them how you feel. On the 23rd and 24th, the very presence of a certain sparkly somebody brightens your life (and how!). By the 28th and 29th, you could be ready for a little more contact with that fascinating stranger. Maybe they're more familiar by now? Gemini May 21 - June 21 Don't forget that a mental connection is important to any successful romantic liaison. No, you two don't have to run out and take IQ tests to make sure you match up. And you don't have to have all the same interests. But there should be a certain intellectual give-and-take, a mind-melding je ne sais quoi, for things to really work. So, is there? Ask yourself that on the 1st and 2nd. By the 8th and 9th, it's time to talk through any confusion. On the 13th, stick to your guns. If you think there's a problem, don't back down until it's addressed. On the 14th and 15th, you're one attractive, mentally alert magnet for romantic attention. Take your pick of your many admirers. Who's the most fun to talk to? Talk to them. Who's the most fun to kiss? Hopefully, those two turn out to be one and the same. On the 19th, you and a like-minded companion can make some magic happen. By the 21st, you're tempted to focus all of your energy on a partner. Don't. You need your attention on yourself. By the 29th, a deep conversation could change everything. Cancer June 22 - July 22 What do you really want from romance? Ask yourself that on the 1st. Then ask yourself, 'What do I really need?' You could find that what you need, first and foremost, is to take care of yourself. Once you've granted yourself some much needed rest and relaxation, you'll be in a much better space to receive the romance you want. By the 6th, you might be too tired to go out dancing. So don't force yourself! Maybe what you need is a little hibernating bear sort of sleep, not a night at the disco. Don't worry about missing out on meeting somebody -- take care of yourself, and romance will find you. On the 11th, stay calm at work and you'll be in better shape for love, should it come knocking. On the 14th and 15th, be careful communicating, as a certain sensitive person is feeling particularly vulnerable. By the 19th, you're feeling much more energetic. Maybe now is the time to make up for lost romantic time with somebody special. On the 21st and 22nd, make some concrete plans. Then, if they call and want to do something different, cancel said plans. By the 28th and 29th, end the month doing something nice -- just for you. Leo July 23 - August 22 Starting the 1st and 2nd, this is shaping up to be a very romantic month. You're batting your eyelashes and having eyelashes batted right back at you. You're flashing smiles and having smiles flashed right back at you. Bask in all of this fantastic energy, and let yourself feel the force of your own attractiveness. Why, yes, you're certainly very attractive! On the 6th, patience is your secret weapon when it comes to a romantic situation. They will come to you -- oh yes they will. Just you wait. On the 9th, don't freak out if not everything goes exactly your way. Visualize how things could work out better. Don't forget: Every love affair starts out as a fantasy. Go step-by-step and see how it evolves in reality. Hit the brakes if there's a major problem, but not until then. On the 14th and 15th, brainstorm to come up with a stellar date idea. By the 21st and 22nd, it's time to review your budget before you plan any big-ticket dates. On the 26th, try not to be self-centered. You end the month, on the 29th, with a seriously sexy aura. Virgo August 23 - September 22 Maybe you want to put on your party clothes on the 1st, and dance, dance, dance. Maybe some kind of serious or semi-serious obligation comes up that prevents you from carrying out your plan. Maybe, as you take off your party shoes and put on your last-minute-babysitting-yournephew sweats, you imagine you're missing out on meeting the romantic partner of your life, who is probably at the Mustang Matters HOROSCOPES club right now! Don't worry: You aren't. There's plenty of time to meet that person this month. The 3rd and 4th are prime days for making a connection. On the 9th, don't come down on them too hard if it turns out that (surprise!) they aren't perfect. By the 14th and 15th, you're ready to talk about it, but be sure you're clear in your articulations. On the 19th, if they need to change the date of your date, be gracious. On the 21st and 22nd, you're in for a great day, followed by another great day. How romantic can this thing get? You're going to find out this month. On the 26th, look at the intangibles. End the month, on the 29th, doing your best to alleviate any unnecessary tension. Libra September 23 - October 22 .On the 1st, you're exploring all kinds of new emotional ranges. In fact, you hit your romantic highs and your loneliest-feeling lows. You're coming to some very important realizations about just how you tick, alone and in a couple. These insights serve you well this month, allowing you to approach a few romantic situations with new poise. On the 4th, you've got the blues. Don't let this state pass without making an effort to get to the bottom of what's really bothering you. On the 8th, if someone throws a wrench in your flirtatious plans, find a good mechanic. The 12th and 13th promise to be absolutely magical. Maybe you don't need that emotional mechanic, after all? On the 17th, don't forget that flexibility is one of the most romantic qualities there is. By the 21st and 22nd, you might be exhausted -- you've done a lot of work this month with your emotions. Why not take a nap? On the 27th, be selfish if you must. On the 28th and 29th, end the month with a little romantic idealism. Scorpio October 23 - November 21 Take a romantic risk on the 1st. Take another on the 2nd. See what happens when you put your fears aside (fears such as: 'Will they like me?') and just follow your heart's desire. This month could be one of a lot of romantic exploration and learning, especially if you listen carefully to what you really need. On the 6th, a conflict arises. Is it a conflict within yourself? Perhaps your emotional impulses aren't as coordinated as they could be? Could it be that part of you wants closeness, but part of you pulls back because you're afraid of being hurt? Don't you think these different signals might confuse your potential partner? On the 9th, go out on a really nice (and slightly off-beat) date. On the 13th, deal with at least one aspect of at least one intimate emotional relationship. On the 17th, dreaming about amorous adventures could bring them closer to reality. On the 21st, do somebody a romantic favor, and you'll be glad in the long run. On the 26th, your romantic energies are at their height -- now's the time to act! End the month, on the 29th, by acting on an instinct. Sagittarius November 22 - December 21 Wear your favorite red shirt on the 1st, because this month has a theme for you: Romance. Why not dress the part? Red sweater, red underwear, red suspenders -- Saint Val- entine is dropping in for a month-long stay, so pull out any items of clothing that remind you of that fact. Then get smiling! On the 2nd, there's intense romantic energy in the air. Enjoy it! On the 5th, talk things over during dinner. Eating together can get the conversation flowing. By the 9th, you're ready to review past mistakes before plunging into a new relationship headfirst. On the 13th, talk about it some more -- maybe over a long lunch. On the 14th and 15th, you could get philosophical. Just don't forget to feature fire-engine red in your wardrobe! On the 19th, a piece of luck lands in your lap. By the 22nd, you want to rush ahead, but you'd do best to slow way down. It's more enjoyable that way. On the 26th, pay attention to your dreams. End the month, on the 28th and 29th, with two of the most romantic days you've ever had! Capricorn December 22 - January 19 Pay close attention to any romantic inclinations you've become aware of on the 1st. Do you notice a little excitement being generated when you think of a certain somebody? Do you catch yourself looking at a new sushi restaurant and thinking how nice it would be to try it with a particular hottie? These images could really be telling you something about what -- and whom -- you really want. On the 3rd and 4th, some of your most romantic daydreams could become real life a whole lot sooner than you expected! By the 9th, it's time to put some of your famed creativity to work in your romantic life. Why not say it with finger paints, or a collage of found objects? On the 11th, you're focused on stability. It's important to feel like the person you've set your sights on can offer you a modicum of emotional security. On the 16th and 17th, you're feeling pretty up and down. Go to the gym, or do some other type of exercise -- it will help. On the 22nd, don't let distance dissuade you, and on the 28th and the 29th, you end the month with a few more dreams. Aquarius January 20 - February 18 Get together with your friends on the 1st and 2nd. Dong so could help you on your way to getting together with a date by Valentine's Day. How? Why, networking, of course. Either somebody will bring someone or someone will know somebody who could be just right for you. Before you know it, you've got a potentially fruitful set-up situation on your hands! By the 6th, you're in a great place to make some romantic moves -- and have them very much reciprocated. On the 10th and 11th, your ideas about love and romance are very enlightened. Maybe you should write them down! On the 16th and 17th, you could be feeling extremely emotional. Why not back off whatever hot topic is pushing your buttons for a little while? On the 21st and 22nd, look beneath the surface to clarify your own real feelings. By the 27th, you could feel ready to get down deep in your own emotional life. Figure this stuff out! End the month, on the 29th, by making some important romantic connections. 12 Mustang Matters GOSSIP 4 THE GROVE……. Brought to you by Lydia Ballard What up Marygrove!!!! Who knows…He was also ordered to do 150 hours of community service when he is released. Lil Wayne, born Dwayne Carter Jr, was recently charged with possession of several drugs, possession of a narcotic for sale, misconduct involving weapons and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was pulled over on January 22nd at a U.S. border patrol checkpoint near Arizona. They found over 3 ounces of marijuana, an ounce of cocaine, and 41 grams of ecstasy. Lil Wayne is due back in court on March 7th…I will most definitely keep you updated…They can’t take away the BEST RAPPER ALIVE… GOT BEEF??!! Mary J. BLIGE, BEYONCE, and MARIAH: Mary J. Blige disses Mariah and Beyonce saying "I'm not going to chase what (mainstream) fans like. It might work for a Mariah. It might work for a Beyonce. But Mary J. Blige is looked at as some sort of organic thing." So, I’m really gonna need for her to get over herself because her own producer, Michael Cox, said that her people wanted him to copy the Mariah sound….so obviously her “organic thing’ isn’t workin for her…And what happened to No More Drama?? KHIA and JANET JACKSON: Khia disses Janet Jackson because she is mad that So Excited wasn’t the first single…She’s also heated because she felt like Janet Jackson didn’t promote the single to her best ability….Her words,” B****, you’re Janet Jackson, call me for the promotion.” She felt as if Janet should have used her apparent recognition to put her (Khia) on the map a lil more…cuz all we have from Khia is the song about her neck and back and how to lick it properly…and that was in 2002. Can we say one hit wonder?! Mustang Matters Gossip cont from page 10 Jay Z and Rhianna: Rhianna was caught going off on Jay Z, making a big scene at a Grammy after party that they both attended.…I am unsure of her exact reason for cutting into Jay Z but he supposedly walked into the party speaking to everyone but Rhianna and Chris Brown. Jealousy is a female’s trait…didn’t he say that??? Also, he was slightly heated about her pulling him on stage the way she did…..DRAMA… DRAMA… DRAMA… NEW COUPLES: KEYSHIA COLE and JEEZY….RHIANNA and CHRIS BROWN… BIG SECRETS EXPOSED! Jay Z has a five year old son named Isa-Jael who lives in Trinidad. Jay Z’s publicity reps denied that Jay paid Shenelle Scott (the baby momma) a million dollars to keep his name off the birth certificate but they didn’t deny Jay Z being the father of the boy. After Jay Z had the paternity test (which he allegedly kept a secret from Scott) he was rumored to have bought her and their son a $2.5 million dollar house in Trinidad. Beyonce’s about to RING THE ALARM!!!! Ready B?!! Chris Stokes molested RAZ B and supposedly the other former members of B2K…Do go to Youtube and check out Raz B’s detailed account of the story…He later recanted…but I believe they paid him off…On youtube, Raz B was on the phone with Chris Stokes, and Stokes said,” I’m not like that anymore.” ANYMORE??? UHH!!! Can we say nasty??? GOOD NEWS….Lil Wayne has officially launched his charity, One Family Foundation. The organization will work to empower urban youth by providing opportunities to cultivate their talents and skills. In addition, youth will learn to become productive and economically self sufficient while being motivated to become successful. Those working with the One Family Foundation hope to instill self-confidence, selfdetermination, family orientation, values and personal success standards in those who utilize the organization. Yeah LIL WAYNE!!!! Way to stand up for your community….but how about you lead by example boo….Gun Charges….Drug Charges….Not the best representation of your organization….but you’re still THE BEST RAPPER ALIVE!!!! That is it for now…hit me up if you have anything juicy…I’m on Facebook….as is the rest of the world... ”YES WE CAN”- BARACK OBAMA One-on-One with Marygrove’s I.T. Photo by D. Burkes Recently I sat down with Jody Kelly who is the I.T. personnel here at Marygrove College. I wanted to ask him some questions concerning so issue regarding the technology here on our glorious campus. Here are his answers. KH: Why is it so difficult to get students of Marygrove College to check their MG email? JK: Emails are a commodity. It is hard to get people to check MG email in regards to their own personal email. Through the Outlook Webmail, however, students and faculty may assign rules which will enable certain bits of mail to be forwarded to other accounts. KH: Will the Datatel Software be upgraded to allow students to access their saved school files from their home computer? JK: An upgrade is in the works. Until then we recommend the use of a flash drive. KH: What is the basic infrastructure for Marygrove College? JK: 2000 active directive / twenty Dell servers. There are Wireless Access Points in Madame Cadillac and the Student Center with plans for new routers in other parts of the campus. There will be also a new SPAM feature to be implemented to eliminate junk mail. Look for instructions on how to utilize that. 14 Mustang Matters CURRENT EVENTS Grant and Sister Shares a Laugh Recently there has been the recent slaying of Tara Grant by her husband Stephen Grant in December 2007. All who knew these people were totally shocked that this event even happened. A whole new twist to this scenario is the tape of Grant and his sister conversing during visitations and actually even laughing of the funeral and admitting no-fault of the crime that was done. It is so disgusting of how a husband could find it inside them to murder and even dismember the person that they were to dedicate their life to. When you take the vows of marriage, you take them because you are indeed in love with the individual. You don’t take the vows and then years later realizes that you despises the person in such a way that you push them down the stairs and cut their head off and hide the torso and head from officials and family. The most sickening of all is while this man is in Macomb County Jail, he writes letters to child killer Jennifer Kukla. Its like he gets off on the suffering of others and wants to be in the surroundings of others who feel the same. Maybe this man had a traumatic growing up which involved smashing hamsters and barbequing cats. What’s Good in Detroit Ramon Baskerville Good day to all my Detroit people. If you love Detroit then you will love what the info that is to be given to you via this article. In Detroit, today we all know how Belle Isle looks right. Well, Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick announces that there is $850,000 for Belle Isle projects that will be creating a spawning reef which in turns means that it will turn the Detroit River into a love fest. Great place to take your Valentine’s Sweetie guys. Wayne County is having a ribbon cutting on their South Shore River Walk Project at Elizabeth Park. They also will be announcing $1 million in new funding for soft engineering. This is wonderful for you car buyers out there so don’t miss it. The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy unveiled recently the design concept for the East riverfront, along with other significant announcements including the agreement on boundaries for Michigan’s first urban state park and harbor, accelerated funding from the Kresge Foundation. The vision to bring back a Detroit treasure, The Columbia, one of the Bob-Lo boats has also become a dream come true. What about our Detroit schools these days. The word is that Renaissance High is a good school for those who want to take seven classes and also go to college as a dual-enrollee. The teachers are drawn from the pool of good teachers we have in Detroit. Most schools would succeed if they would drip students with a below 2.0 grade point average the way Renaissance and Cass does at the present time. Work must be done. Get out there and vote for the revival of our head start programs. Detroit is really jumping today with the new cars for the 2008 new year such as the Ford F-150, Hyundai Genesis, and Corvette ZRi. Detroit, get out there and make your money! Have fun in the downtown area with its new events for all ages and utilizing the Detroit People Mover to cheaply and affordably get you from one area to another. Mustang Matters CAMPUS NEWS Jazz Night at Marygrove Vaughn Arrington Chardonnay & electric violin charges the air at the Student Center in the middle of Marygrove. Nothing like a chill environment I’ll tell you. Candles burn away any thoughts of worry as the over-head lights escape us. Live band, spirits and a mature crowd makes you wonder is this really a college campus?? You’d be surprised. Just in case you missed it, call to find out when, it’s happening again very soon. A verbal expression of what’s going on is beyond my tool of measure. But I’ll do what I can as the symphony of enjoying voices in the audience take part in the alto & violins sketch of life’s abandonment of trouble and chaos. The room is filled with Marygrove’s department heads from Dean Ambrose to Lesley Jackson Director of Student Life, who hosted this incredible wonderfully out of place event, on over to the most affluent students. We listen with an intent ear as Mr. Jerald Daemyon takes us away with the electric violin. Harmonized with the strong sex appeal of the saxophone, Mr. -Yancy lifts our spirits to the cloud called ‘9’ as he plays for us on that evening. His biography includes musical arrangements with Mr. Will Downing, Gerald Levert, Howard Hewett, and Freddie Jackson; he has opened for Stevie Wonder, played with the Ohio Players and a host of others. This is all a string up from the educational background of Music he’s received at U of M. His partner Ms. Smoothness, A.K.A. Ms. Gwen Foxx, lifts us all with a voice fit for a golden stage as she twists and shapes an Erykah Badu with a Kelis blend off into a Jazz theme. One spartza of a group I must admit. Ms. Foxx is a performing arts coordinator at Oakland University in the Summer Arts academy of Rochester, Michigan. This mystical young lady has done tours with the most notable, including the “Share My World” tour with Mary J. Blige. Traveling just about everywhere, she’s linked up with Debbie Morgan doing tours out side of the music scene but doesn’t abandon us for too long. Her portfolio continues with the 2008 Grammy Award winning Clark Sisters. The group is called “Jus Friends”, playing the instruments God gave them as if they came straight from heaven to host events for the feel of what is going on up in the sky. This groups violinist has a hit called “Summer Madness” that many mistake for Jon Lu-Ponty but Oh No Don’t be mistaken, this is Detroit’s own “J.D.” Mr. Jerald Damien composed the curriculum for the music program at Detroit Performing Arts & doesn’t stop there as he pulls & pushes the bow across his zata. A breath-taking jazz rendition of Kirk Franklin’s “Stomp” closes the night holding everyone in insatiable awe while forced to depart. Don’t miss the next event! They’ll be back!!! Photos by D. Burkes 16 Mustang Matters ENTERTAINMENT Geant Expansion’s Featured Artist In regards to all those who enjoy rap and the diversity that it brings to the urban arena. Geant Expansion is an up and coming music promotion and graphic design company with a goal in representing those with the talent and dedication to be made known through the underground arena to the mainstream audience of stardom. The Mustang Matters will be featuring the top artist of this company so as to let you the reader know of soon-to-be top recording artists to emerge onto the market. The featured artist of this issue is none other than Yung Xtreme. This talented rapper and producer hails from Charlotte, North Carolina and lives and breaths rap. He writes and mixes his own songs and is in search of that one big hit that will land him a shot at signing of the dotted line. Beat for beat and rhyme for rhyme, Yung Xtreme ( Johntavious Billings) had few dreams with very low future. The mic in the underground world for him is synonyms to the golden glove in pro-boxing. Yung Xtreme began his music industry hazing at the age of 12 when he would frequent talent shows and studios along side rhyming Lil Slice and a lot of other rappers. The Charlotte, NC artist continued to write rhymes, but not just for his personal use; he turned it into a business and began composing and selling songs to signed and unsigned artists.- A very dexterous asset to the rap game was born. Yung Xtreme credits his friends and family for helping him on pursing his dreams of becoming an aspiring rapper "I can remember her telling me I was always talented for my age", says the Skillfull. He recalls it all starting one day while sitting in the 6th grade writing a song in history class for a project. At first it was something like writing famous artists' lyrics and reciting them. Then the teacher recommended that he try something a little different and a bit more original. So later that day Yung Xtreme ended up writing a short song which was sort of a parody of "Blanking Hard" but in the sense of it being a history class, Yung Xtreme came up with something called "Thinking Hard". This young MC is on the rise and you can check out his verses at the Geant Expansion site at http://www.freewebs.com/iboagent2/music.htm.
