RESTING AT THE FOOT OF THE RUGGED ORGAN MOUNTAINS AND ALONG
THE BANKS OF THE RIO GRANDE, LAS CRUCES, NEW MEXICO IS MORE
THAN JUST THE CROSSROADS OF TWO INTERSTATES. IT IS THE CULTURAL
CROSSROADS OF THE SOUTHWEST, AND A GATEWAY TO THE PAST
“The city of Las Cruces has done
an excellent job of developing
magnificent high school athletic
facilities. The community as a whole
should be commended for their
dedication and devotion to improving
extracurricular activities. The students
of Las Cruces benefit every year by
having the opportunity to participate
on the fields, courts and gymnasiums
provided by the City of Las Cruces.”
Gary Tripp
New Mexico Activities Association
Executive Director
While the bustling lanes of Interstates 10 and 25 converge on the Mesilla Valley, Las Cruces
stands as a timeless symbol of history and festivity. With warm weather and over 300 days
of sunshine a year, Las Cruces offers travelers a wide range of outdoor activities, museums,
shopping, and many diverse events and festivals. Centuries ago, Spanish explorers brought
their faith, culture, language and way of life to this land. Today, over four hundred years
later, our past is one of our greatest treasures, alive in everything from our traditional
architecture, spicy cuisine, and unique artwork. We are a great crossroads of Hispanic,
Indian and American cultures, fertile river valleys and vast deserts.
Las Cruces is rich in history and culture. Legends such as Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett and
Apache Chief Geronimo left their mark on the land and its people. Their stories are
captured and retold through local lore. Visitors can also experience our age old culture
and heritage through annual festivals and events including the International Mariachi
Conference, Southern New Mexico Wine Festival, Renaissance ArtsFaire, the Hatch Chile
Festival, Las Cruces Country Music Festival and Frontier Days to name a few. Explore one of
the world's great natural wonders with a day trip to White Sands National Monument, less
than an hour away. With so many events and attractions, there is plenty to do at the end of
the day, and we will be right there to help with any tour suggestions or planning. Our ideal
location brings sports enthusiasts into contact with over 25 state of the art sports facilities.
And with a mild year-round climate, 325 days of sunshine a year, and an average annual
precipitation rate of just over 10”, Las Cruces allows sporting event organizations to plan
their next event or tournament with confidence.
In 2004 Las Cruces was named one of Sports Illustrated Magazines Greatest Sports Towns
in the country. In 2006 the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) named the Field of Dreams
Softball Complex the ASA Complex of the Year.

LAS CRUCES IS THE SECOND LARGEST AND
FASTEST GROWING CITY IN NEW MEXICO
Population
Las Cruces - 100,000
Doña Ana County - 210,000
Geographical location
Las Cruces is located in southern New Mexico, at the foot of
the Organ Mountains, along the banks of the Rio Grande and
at the crossroads of Interstates 10 and 25.
Elevation
3,900 feet above sea level.
Climate
Las Cruces enjoys warm and dry weather, regardless of the
time of year. In the summer, temperatures climb into the
upper 90s. With little humidity to speak of, the heat is not
uncomfortable and nights are warm and pleasant. In the
winter, when the northern states are digging out from the
snow, Las Crucens enjoy days in the upper 50s or lower
60s. Many natives wear t-shirts year-round, although light
jackets are recommended for the nights. By February, the
temperatures are averaging almost 65 degrees during the day.
Temperatures warm up as spring comes in March and April.

Art Community
Historic Mesilla
With over 40 galleries and over 200 artists, the Mesilla Valley is
the perfect place for art lovers seeking high quality productions at
reasonable prices. At the Crossroads of the Southwest, it would
delight some to know that the Mesilla Valley offers an extensive
array of art ranging from galleries, museums, studios, public and fine
art, to sculptures, paintings, photographs and historical artifacts.
South of Las Cruces on Highway 28, (575) 524-3262
mesillanm.gov
Mesilla offers a wide range of historical and cultural events, shopping
and dining on the town’s plaza. Patrons can experience a wide
variety of history and cuisine while they visit one of the most
historic locations in New Mexico. An important landmark in Mesilla
is the San Albino church on the plaza. The church, originally built
of Adobe in 1855, still offers masses today in English and Spanish.
Outside the church is a memorial to parishioners who have died in
combat.
A wonderful variety of performing arts, theatre, music and dance are
also available in this high desert community.
Bataan Death March Memorial- Heroes of Bataan
Veterans Park, 2651 Roadrunner Pkwy., (575) 541-2000
Heroes of Bataan was dedicated on April 13, 2002, in honor of the
70,000 American and Filipino POW’s forced by the Japanese to
surrender and walk the infamous seven-day, 65-mile Bataan Death
March through the Philippines in April,1942. Of the original 70,000
men who started the march, less than 60,000 survived. After the
surrender, New Mexico had the highest per capita POW population
in the U.S. Because of this, nearby White Sands Missile Range hosts
the annual Bataan Death March Memorial run.
Fort Selden State Monument
280 Ft. Selden Rd., (575) 526-8911
nmmonuments.org
The Fort was the home of the buffalo soldiers, an African-American
cavalry unit assigned to protect the valley from Native American
attacks. On summer weekends, park staff dress up and recreate fort
life during the 18th century. If the staff knows you are coming they
can re-enact for your group. Located 15 miles north of Las Cruces on
either Interstate 25, exit 19 or Highway 185.

New Mexico farms and ranches in the 18th and 20th centuries.

how agriculture evolved over 3,000 years. A restaurant and gift shop
are located on the premises. For groups, the museum offers handson classes in southwest cooking, saddle making, western roping, and
sheep shearing. Located 1.5 miles east of Telshor Blvd. on University
Ave.

USSSA has also contested its World Hispanic Championship and
Armed Forces Championship in Las Cruces as well.
hosts two big events each year: the Whole Enchilada Tournament in
October and the Border Cup event in April which average 100 teams
per event each year. Also on the rise is BMX racing. The American
Bicycle Association held its Southwest Nationals at the Roadrunner
BMX Track in 2002 and 2007.
The Amateur Softball Association has also contested over 20
National Championships here, from Girls Fast Pitch to Men’s Slow
Pitch and Fast Pitch. The annual Missy Molina Girls Fast Pitch
Tourney averages over 100 teams each year. Youth Soccer has

for seating both below and above the natural ground level. In 2001, Aggie
Memorial Stadium was recognized as the #1 stadium in the Sun Belt
Conference by Sporting News. The stadium features a Daktronics Jumbotron
which is 37-feet by 58-feet, with a 23-feet by 38-feet color screen. The
Jumbotron allows fans to see all angles of the game as well as replay. The
Stan Fulton Athletics Center is a three-story facility that houses many of the
Aggie Athletic Department’s administrative offices with the Aggie football
staff and the Athletic Academic Program. The complex includes classrooms,

One of the jewels of New Mexico State’s athletic facilities is the
state-of-the-art Coca-Cola Weight Training Center. Built in 1992, NM
State’s impressive strength and conditioning center is an enormous
13,500-square foot facility. A free weight section commands a great
deal of the space, utilizing six power racks, six Olympic platforms,
one unilateral hip sled and a 130-foot indoor track for 40-yard dash
testing. In 1998, seven multi-safety racks, two jammer stations, two
power-thrust stations and five back system machines were added to
