Dr. D'liese Melendrez, Principal
Principal’s Message:
Exciting Year of Accomplishments at EHS
These are very exciting times of reflection and celebration – The Prom, final field trips,
AP and STAR testing, banquets, concerts, senior activities, final examinations and
preparation for summer camps. I am so proud of our Charger students!
This year our staff continued to “raise the bar” to challenge our students with rigorous
and relevant curriculum and to prepare them for college and careers beyond high
school. We received glowing approvals by the WASC Accreditation mid-term review
visiting team this year. Our efforts were recognized once again by being named one of
America’s Best High Schools by Newsweek! In addition, Edison has been named a
Safe Sports School 1st Team, by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association.
It is now time to congratulate the Class of 2014 and wish them much success and happiness on their next adventure. These graduates have garnered many scholarships, recognitions and awards. Many will be recognized at the Golden Key Awards, S.T.A.R.
Achievement Awards, Character Awards and Senior Awards Night. This amazing
class will be continuing their educations at many prestigious universities, trade schools
and colleges across the state and nation (91.2%). Twenty of the graduates will be heading off to serve in the Military. We are proud of our National Merit Scholar Finalist,
Christopher Yin.
As the school year winds to a close it is also fitting to recognize the dedicated and exceptional staff at Edison High School and congratulate those staff members who are
retiring: SAC teacher, Jane Lemonds, Science Teacher, Greg Brewsaugh, Cafeteria,
Marie Lipot, Maintenance, Don Brown and SAC instructional aides, Sandy Bennett
and Gail Harmeier. We are also proud to announce that the Charger Teacher of the
Year is Lissie Barro (English/Language Arts), and the Edison Classified Employee of
the Year is Jan Nagle (Supervision Secretary), who is also the district Classified Employee of the Year!!
Finally, Edison would not be the great school it is without the incredible support from
our parents and community. Thank you to the 31+ booster groups, 1300 PTSA members, the Academic Booster Club, the EHS Foundation and the countless volunteers. Your partnership is the “magic ingredient” for our exemplary school.
In closing, thank you to our students, graduates, parents/guardians, staff and community members for making this past year - a year to remember!
D’liese Melendrez, Principal
Proud to be a Charger!

SENIORS REQUEST YOUR FINAL TRANSCRIPT NOW
The process for requesting a transcript is now online.
Parchment is the system now being used in the Huntington
Beach Union High School District for transcripts. With the
new process, your transcript arrives at the destination of your
choice quickly, and you are able to track the progress of your
request each step of the way. In addition, to having your transcript sent to the destination of your choice, you can also upload other required college documents like recommendation
letters and personal statements. Parchment will send those
important items for you at no additional cost.
If you are requesting a FINAL TRANSCRIPT select
“HOLD FOR GRADES” (in the Confirmation Screen) in
Parchment.com. The Parchment website is easy, and it’s secure and it’s open 24/7. You can access it at
www.edisonchargers.com or www.parchment.com. Pay online
($10.25 per official transcript).
The PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) has been
scheduled for Wednesday, October 15, 2014. We encourage
all juniors to take this test that will prepare them for taking
the SAT. Students who perform exceptionally well on the
test may be eligible for college scholarships. Refer to the
flyer included in your summer registration packet for ticket
information.
The College & Career Center web page at http://
mrsquay.wix.com/college-career-ctr is kept up to date with
details about college applications, timelines, research information, forms seniors can use during their college search,
test registration and test dates for the SAT Reasoning test and
ACT tests as the information becomes available.
Send your email address to Mrs. Quay at

ROP Prepares Students for
College & Careers
Something To Think About,
Parents!
As I approach the end of
this school year, I find
the counselor part of
me, reflecting on the
various needs students
have discussed with me.
The complexity of having healthy relationships, workload and
deadlines in classes, demands from parents and teachers, life
stress, and the overall pressure that looms over every teenager, the need to belong. As parents, we can’t change those
things I have just mentioned, but we certainly can help our
teens in another way. The following fact is something easy to
understand yet as parents we make it very difficult.
Did you know? That for every
100 ninth grade students entering a California high school
70 will graduate four years
later, 37 will immediately enter college, 19 will graduate
with either an associates degree within three years or a
bachelors degree within six years.
In Orange County, 40 percent of graduating high school seniors are eligible to attend a University or California State
University school. It has been reported that 60 percent of 9th
and 10th graders do not particularly like school and are not
motivated to succeed. Of those disaffected students, more
than 90 percent said they would be more motivated if their
school offered classes more relevant to their future careers.
Fact:
As a teen, if you want your parents to listen to you, you’re
not alone!
Let the Coastline Regional Occupational Program (ROP)
benefit your student. With over 75 career preparation
courses ROP offers quality, up-to-date work place learning
and career development.
The Colorado Psychiatric Society came up with this essay
question for a statewide contest for high school students:
There is a perception that ROP is a vocational program for
students not planning on going to college. That perception
could not be further from the truth! ROP is for all students.
Students going directly into the work force will develop
knowledge and skills which results in higher paying positions. ROP benefits those students continuing on to college
by providing a practical hands-on experience related to a particular major. ROP classes on a high school transcript can be
evidence of career exploration and can be used to enhance
Teenagers today continue to be the victims of psychiatric crises—suicide, depression, eating disorders
and drug addiction, to name a few. What are the issues behind this that adults need to understand in
order to be of more help?
The Society expected to hear about the dangers of peer pressure, or how parents interfere in the lives of their kids. Instead, the nearly universal response was “We want our parents to listen to us.” As one student wrote, “Just talk to me….
Make time in your busy schedule to learn more about me.”

Edison PTSA Honors and Says Thank You
Looking at the year in review, we accomplished much in our five areas of
focus: Parent Education, Youth Matters,
Advocacy, Arts and Communications.
Our PTSA Programs focused on orienting incoming freshman families, providing parent training on
the Parent Portal and Edison Charger website, and hosting
college workshops. PTSA invited teachers Lissie Barro and
Kendra Rosales to demonstrate to parents an English Lesson
and a Algebra lesson utilizing the new Common Core Standards. PTSA also scheduled speakers from administration
including Principal Dr. D'liese Melendrez, Assistant Principal
Ms. Jennifer Graves and Student Support Specialist Linda
Temple as well as representatives from our Associated Student Body. Our Youth Matters Committee continued to collaborate with EHS staff, community leaders, and professionals to host the award-winning 3rd Annual REAL Teen Event
educating students and parents on the dangers of alcohol and
drug abuse. PTSA sent representatives to Sacramento to advocate on behalf of children with respect to education funding. Two Edison students, Susan Ly and Keegan Fowler,
won awards at the Reflections Art Contest's council and district levels. Lastly, we kept our membership informed and
connected through our Constant Contact e-mails.
Edison PTSA wrapped up the final few weeks of school honoring the good work of our Charger community and saying
thank you for your support.
EHS PTSA Honors Seven for
Service to Youth
Edison PTSA presented several awards
during our year-end event on May 14th.

Continuing Service Award - Kathy DeSalvo
Honorary Service Award - Kym Sneed
Honorary Service Award - Joyce Ewart
Outstanding Teacher Award - Mr. Cabrera
Very Special Person Award - Laurie Vandeman

Thank You for a Wonderful Year from ABC…
Congratulations to our Seniors as they begin their
next journey! You are all a special group of people
and can be very proud of your accomplishments over
the last 12 years. You all will be remembered and
missed and we wish you well in your exciting future!
Our Award Recognition Program was a huge success! 360
students received awards for their accomplishments of helping others, showing improvement and exceptional effort.
Senior Awards is a special ceremony in June where ABC
awards scholarships to deserving students to help them with
their future education plans. Thank you to all of the students
who filled out ABC Scholarship Applications this past May.
It is good to see that we can help so many students again this
year!
We are looking for Student Store Volunteers and to fill some
Board positions for next fall. Don’t be shy. If your child tells
you not to help out, be a teenager at heart -- do the opposite
and help out anyway! The Academic Booster Club is a nice
way to stay aware of what’s going on at the school
yet not be in your teen’s way! Our meetings are the
first week of every month at 5:00 p.m. and we
would love to have you join us!
Thank you to the ABC Board Members and all of the wonderful parents, teachers and staff that help make Edison High
School such a great place to be.

Academic Competition
EHS Surfs the Wave of STEM
We are working on developing a STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) program to support student learning through project based learning. We are creating a program where students can be engaged through a successful “hands-on” learning. We
want students to feel empowered to
think critically, be creative, and problem solve real world situations and
come up with solutions to their project.
This was an exciting year of change and
growth for academic competition at
Edison High School. Our students got
great scores on the American Chemical
Society first and second year tests and
were honored at an ACS dinner. Chris
Yin even qualified to take part in the national chemistry
Olympiad test. Our chemistry team came in with a top ten
score, earning a well deserved congratulation for themselves
and our AP chemistry teacher Ms. Ballard.
A group of science and math teachers
recently attend a National Science
Teachers Association (NSTA) STEM (Science Technology
Engineering and Mathematics) EXPO conference in New
Orleans, Louisiana due to the grant won earlier this year
from the California Department of Education Secondary
Specialized Program (SSP) grant. We are beginning to incorporate ideas and concepts learned at the NSTA STEM
EXPO conference into our classroom curriculum.
Our speech and debate team took on their first full year of
competition since the eighties with
the goal of entering the scene as true
competitors. We beat our own goal
by winning awards in student congress at every competition and sending three students to state championships, with Austin Smith making the
semi final rounds. Always remember,
if you want to compete with your mind, Edison is the place.
Check out our progress on the Edison Innovation Lab. We
are seeking grants and donations to expand the program to
include solar and wind power generation systems, biofuel
generation projects, and a robotics program. The Innovation
Lab will be modeled after the Maker Movement where students will be allowed to experiment and try out both assigned projects and ideas of their own. Currently a tank system for raising White Sea Bass is being assembled in the Lab
and we are making space for our robotics club.

From the Health Office
Preparation for the NEW School Year 2014-2015
It may seem too early to think about the start of the new
school year, 2014-2015, yet, many of you will visit your
child’s physician during the summer and if you are aware of
what is needed for school as regards medication, accommodation “504” plan, and or PE exemption; it’s not too early to
plan for what your student may need related to health concerns for the new school year!
If your child needs Special Health Care Services, i.e. Diabetes
regimen, gastrostomy tube feeding, catheterization, suctioning, and/or medication at school, i.e. for asthma (albuterol
inhaler), migraine, diabetes, emergency allergy medication
(Epi-pen), menstrual cramps, ADHD, etc. an authorization
form must be completed by you and your child’s physician.
The “Parent/Guardian and Authorized Health Care Provider
Request for Medication” and/or “Specialized Physical Health
Care Services” form can be obtained from the Health Office
(Room 304A new form needs to be submitted EVERY school
year to the Health Office by the first day of school Wednesday, August 27, 2014. Medications should be dropped off by
a responsible adult and may NOT be delivered by the student
nor the backpack for safety reasons.
certifications must be renewed/
updated in a timely manner.
Lastly, please know that it is a
pleasure to work in the Health Office. We are grateful that our district
strives to provide services where so
many other school districts have had
to eliminate health and crisis care. In
order to provide the best care possible, it is important that
emergency cards are completely filled out by the parent/
guardian. We need an update on your child’s health status.
There is a space provided to add this at the back of the emergency card. It will be beneficial if several emergency contact
persons with updated phone numbers are available for when
you cannot be reached.
Please do not hesitate to call the Health Office if you have any
questions at (714) 962-1356 ext 4429 (health clerk) or 4430
(nurse). Our health clerk, Ms. Bree Poor will be on campus
beginning August 11, 2014 to assist you with your needs.
Have a safe and enjoyable summer break.
If your child has PE restrictions, a physician’s note must also
be turned into the Health Office as the need arises. Physician Irene R. Igual, BSN, RN MSN
