The Office Activities Committee brought smiles to the office with a chocolate fountain and an array of dipping items to choose from...strawberries, apples, pretzels, oreo cookies, wafers & bananas. What a treat! A little chocolate brings out the playful side of everyone! Above you can see Velma is busted for taking a CUP full of chocolate from the fountain! (She claims she was taking it to share with staff at the Makai office. Yeah, right!) Carol wants to share her treats with “The Big & Beefy” Vince! Note she’s sharing her bananas but not her chocolate! Smart gal! By Sharon Hodson COACH DAROLD IMANAKA’S KAMEHAMEHA GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM WINS DI STATE HOOPS TITLE Our very own independent agent, Darold Imanaka is known as Coach Darold at Kamehameha Schools. And on February 8, 2013, his Warrior girls did the unthinkable. Down 20 points late in the 3rd quarter, the Warriors went on a 25-0 run to shock top-seeded Konawaena in overtime, 45-39 to win their 1st State title since 2002. The girls gathered themselves and talked about it and listened to Coach Darold, who told them that their opponents were tired so they need to keep pushing it. Coach Darold said that this was the biggest comeback he has been a part of, bar none. It is a life lesson, as he told his girls, “You don’t quit in life”. Prior to taking on this position, Darold took his own alma mater, Kalani High School to the 2006 Div II Girls Basketball State Championship and the DI State quarterfinals. By Bobbie Erickson Atlas Olelo Hui toastmasters’ collective ums..ahs and so’s! 5 cent fines funded our 2012 Annual Year End Party – a pizza blowout! Matt Arine, presiding Toastmaster, reigned over a very eclectic group of speeches. Peter launched into his theme in an appropriate Dr Seuss-like whimsical piece…. ”Pick up pizza! pizza! for the party, Peter, please It was a request I couldn’t sneeze…at It was easier than getting a Cat in the Hat…” For a nickel, Peter is willing to repeat his 7 minute speech …staying on theme, after the speech Peter went out to pick up the Pizza and returned in time to be recognized for his winning speech. Melanie’s speech was titled A Celebration of Toastmasters and did just that. The club has come a long way and Melanie confirmed this by telling us that last year the club earned Distinguished Club status, had 4 members reach Competent Communicator level and 2 members achieve Competent Leader awards. Lynette’s very first speech titled Kumulipo, a wonderful tale of her family’s lineage…clear back to King Kamehameha….a close knit family instilling values of service...watching her parents giving back to the community. Lynette’s story comes full circle as she serves on a non profit board guiding 3 Homestead communities in Kapolei. Amanda Zamora-Matsuura & Mitch Matsuura faced the Table Topic Challenge. This challenge is NOT for the faint of heart and takes mucho courage. You must immediately respond top of your head...no ahs, ums or so’s. Mitch’s challenge…you are moonlighting at Hallmark…your first assignment is to come up with a holiday. What is the new holiday and how will it be celebrated? Amanda’s challenge…2 out of 3 people re-gift…do you think re-gifting is acceptable…have you done it? For a nickel, Amanda & Mitch will repeat their 2 minute answers. Hint: Mitch’s holiday was very cool and Amanda warns to be sure not to re-gift to the giver…hmmmm. International Speech Contest By Bobbie Erickson For the first time – Atlas Olelo Hui participated in the International Speech Contest. Our contestants representing Area 7: Chenise Blalock Power of a Mentor Peter Junker All Things Are Possible Sharilyn Tanaka Overcoming My Greatest Fear The theme was Inspirational – and whether you hear how one person can make a difference in a young troubled youth’s life or a young boy overcoming childhood polio or a young woman turning fear of needles into a good deed donating blood for others, your heart is inspired….and Kleenex, definitely a good idea! Peter Junker was chosen to move on to the Area contest in March…then hopefully the Division level in April…with District Level in May ending with the International Competition in ..wait for it ..wait for it…CINCINNATI!!!! in August.
