PAGE 3 EMPLOYEE NEW SLETTER OF ATLAS IN SURANCE AGENCY Speech Contests: A Toastmasters Tradition B y T e r i F a b r y ( T o a s t ma s t e r Se c r e t a r y / T r e a s u r e r ) Speech contests are an opportunity to practice competitive speaking. They are also an opportunity to observe proficient speakers and provide interesting and educational programs for members and the general public. Contests begin at the club level and winners advance to area, division, district (state) and international levels. Peter Junker won the Area 7 competition & Debra (Island) took second place for Area 10 in March and will compete in the Division B contest in April. Peter accepting Area 7 Award Each speech contest is judged on content, delivery and language. There are 100 total points with 50% of the speech points allocated to speech development, effectiveness and value. 30% of the points are based on physical appearance, voice and mannerisms. The remaining 20% of the points reflect word choice and grammatical skill. Debra and Peter each wrote a speech from their heart and delivered it with a passionate performance. They crafted compelling content and included a bit of the essential element….humor. Most importantly, they practiced and practiced and practiced…and then practiced some more. I had the pleasure of hearing their speeches at the club contest and then again at the area level. Their speeches at the Atlas ‘Olelo Hui club contest were GOOD but…. they both understood that as one progresses up through the Toastmasters speech contest levels, competition becomes increasingly stronger. The audience and judges comprise a broader demographic cross-section as one moves beyond the club level. Good speeches win at the club level but may not win at the area or division. They didn’t relax and think their victory at the club level would earn them a victory at the area level. Debra and Peter solicited advice and re-worked their speeches. They practiced and practiced and practiced some more. Their speeches were dramatically different at the area competitions and improved at every level. Their speeches were GREAT! Debra (Island) accepting Area 10 Award They will each have 7 minutes and 30 seconds to impress the judges and win at the District competitions in April. I’m excited to listen to their speeches and can’t wait to congratulate them again! GOOD LUCK DEBRA and PETER!! PAGE 4 EMPLOYEE NEW SLETTER OF ATLAS IN SURANCE AGENCY S he t e te a D !
