Middos’s Night
Dear St Mary’s Catholic School Community,
Over 1000 tickets have been sold for Saturday night’s Craig
Middleton Family Benefit Night which will be held at Wyong
Leagues Club. Craig is in Ryde Rehabilitation Centre and once
the home renovations are complete (hopefully by Christmas), he
will be able to move back home. The local Central Coast community has been amazing as it has banded together in showing
incredible moral and practical support for Craig and his family.
If you want a definition of the word resilient, it reads Middleton
family in my dictionary. The positive, hope-filled outlook obvious
in Craig, Jo, Lochie and Mia is inspiring. Saturday night will be
fun as we help out a good bloke from a good family.
Children are asked to bring a gold coin in on Friday as 6 Gold
teacher, Mr Whiteford, raises further funds by having his head
shaved. His colleague, Mrs Walker will take great delight in
having the honour.

Wisdom
People with all the answers can’t learn anything new. The sting
of being wrong often blocks them from accepting even obvious
corrections to their worldview.
It goes without saying that those who can handle being totally
wrong are the greatest learners in the world. Peter gets to be
one of these in today’s Gospel when he goes from the head of
the class to the dunce chair by assuming that Jesus does not
need to suffer and die as part of his mission. He is rebuked and
will be stung again, often, until he is shaped into the humble
leader Jesus wants for his church.
What are you totally wrong about? Open your mind and your
heart to the Teacher and start learning and growing again today.

Book Week Parade
Please join us for our Book Week Parade commencing at
9.30am on the top playground on Friday morning. If you have a
chance to visit our Library, our Book Fair continues all week.

Please join us for our Father’s Day celebrations on Friday 5th
September. Commencing at 7.00am with our Father’s Day
BBQ Breakfast, followed at 9.15am with Mass and then our
annual Dads vs Year 6 Netball match. Our Father’s Day Stall
will be held on Thursday 4th September.
We need some Dads to volunteer for the Netball game. If
you’re playing in the first quarter, you’ll need to be good.
You’re up against our Netball team who has qualified for the
State Finals.
Term 4 Swimming Programs
In Weeks 1 and 2 of Term 4, Kinder, Year 1 and Year 2 are all
involved in a 9 day intensive Swimming Program to be held at
Mingara. In Weeks 7 and 8 of next term, Years 3, 4, 5 and 6
are all involved in a 10 day intensive Swimming Program led by
YMCA. The primary program culminates in a Surf Survival Day
to be held at Soldier’s Beach on Friday 28th November.

To represent NSW in one sport is an outstanding achievement.
To represent NSW in two sports is an amazing achievement.
Congratulations Milla Evans on being selected in both the NSW
Netball and NSW Touch teams. Our school is proud of you.
Staff Development Days
We have two Staff Development Days remaining this year.
They will be held on Monday 27th October (Science + Technology) and Monday 1st December (Transition).
Summer Uniform
Our official changeover date for the summer uniform is the beginning of Term 4. If the weather turns warmer earlier, the children are welcome to wear their full summer uniform.

Enjoy Book Week!
The Sacrament of Confirmation
Congratulations to the many children who made the Sacrament of Confirmation last Saturday. Your behaviour was
outstanding at it was very obvious that your teachers and
parents were very proud of you all. It was a very special
celebration of your Catholic Faith - congratulations boys
and girls! A big thank you must go out to the readers and
choir students who supported those making their confirmation; Ted D, Cloe A, Reese C, Katie G, Sarah J, Samuel I, Grace H, Maya W and Laura E.
Confirmation was the last sacrament for the 2014 school
year. If you have any questions regarding your child making any of the sacraments, no matter which grade they are
in, please contact me.
Grade Masses
Kindergarten, your grade mass is this weekend, Sunday
31st August at 9am. Grade masses are a once a year
weekend opportunity for all students in a grade to attend
mass with their family, teachers and peers.
Father's Day Mass
Parents, especially dads, step dads, pops, uncles and any
other significant males; please join us for our Father’s Day
Mass next Friday, 5th September. We would love for your
to join us on this special day. Mass will begin at 9.15am,
after our Father's Day breakfast. Dads, after mass
please stay around for our annual Dads vs Year 6 netball
match - it's always a much anticipated and competitive
game. Please join us, whether it's to play or cheer on your
team.

special slideshow showing photos of the dads, uncles,
pops and other significant males from our St Mary's community with their kids.

At long last the week has arrived!
BOOK FAIR
On Monday our Scholastic Book Fair opened. Hundreds of books have been sold already and there is a lot of excited chatter out and
about on the playground. I love seeing kids with their nose in a book. So far we are able to put new books into half of our classrooms
for leisure reading.
Our Book Fair is open until Friday so there is still time to come in a buy a book. If we are down to our last copy I am able to order it
in just like our school Book Club. I have lots of impatient readers checking in each day to see if their books have arrived.
What has been hot? The 52-Storey Treehouse by Andy Griffith and Terry Denton has been our top seller as well as Pixel Art. Any
books on order will be delivered to your child’s classroom as soon as they come in.
MR TONY MURPHY
On Monday and Tuesday Mr Tony Murphy, our guest cartoonist, gave art lessons from Kinder to Year 6. I was able to visit a few of
these sessions and could not believe how engaged the children were with their drawing as well as the skills and techniques they were
picking up from Tony’s demonstrations. I could honestly say that every Sponge Bob character drawn by the children was of a high
standard. Well done St Mary’s and a big thank you to Mr Tony Murphy.
Tony has also illustrated a book on bullying. The library has purchased one for every classroom.
BOOK PARADE…FAIR WEATHER OR FOUL?!?!?!?!
As I sit and write this piece for the newsletter I hear the constant patter of rain on my roof. It was definitely not part of the plan!!!! At
this early stage in the week I am hopeful for fairer weather on Friday. However, in the event of ‘foul’ weather we do have a Plan B
and Plan C. Hopefully we won’t get to Plan C.
Plan B: We will still hold our Parade on top playground as usual but may have to parade as a grade to avoid an impending downpour.
Plan C:….if we have a downpour then we will have to hold our parade in the hall. If we get to Plan C we will have an Infants and
Primary session in order to cater comfortably for the number children and visitors on the day. Reading on the oval will be postponed
to a later date in the term.
Fingers crossed everyone that we don’t get to Plan C!!!!!!

From the Family Liaison Officer……
“The Brilliance of Boredom”
Below is a brief recap of one of the topics at the recent Positive Schools Conference, “The Brilliance of Boredom” presented by Dr Helen street. She explained that children’s time
can be grouped as –
Reactive – time spent in front of screens where they are
passive participants in activities – kills creativity
Creative – “Creativity is the process of having original ideas
that have value” – Ken Robinson. Creativity is unique to each
individual and not to a particular group that are considered
artistic/ talented.
Play – free, unstructured time. This is where children are
learning the skills needed to survive, to develop social skills
and groups. Developing social skills in communities through
extended play leads to less bullying. Unstructured time with
no adult led initiatives gives children the opportunity to engage in life themselves.
Creativity does not describe artistic ability but is actually the
way a person thinks. Elements of creativity include the generation of ideas, curiosity, experimentation, risk taking, application of knowledge, ownership and control.
Consequences of reduced creativity include disengagement,
loss of ownership, poor social skills, poor emotional regulation, substance abuse, behavioural issues and mental health
problems.
In today’s newsletter I have included a short list of tips for
developing creativity in our children. Of particular interest is
point 6 “Help children build a sense of mastery” – When children are young we encourage mistakes to get them to learn,
eg walking, feeding themselves, but as children get older
adults are less tolerant of mistakes – remember, it’s OK to
make mistakes in order to learn.
Suggestions for families to encourage creativity –

No TV or gaming for a week

Come up with a new game to play with the whole
family – no props allowed

Keep a gratitude diary

Write “whatever comes into your head” diary for ten
minutes every morning
Can you come up with any more suggestions for families? Let

POLDING RUGBY UNION ZAC IZZARD
Zac has competed in the Polding Rugby Union Competition last week. He has played against the biggest and
best in NSW. Polding defeated Western Sydney 31 – 0 and MacKillop 12 – 5. Polding then won against Sydney East in the quarter finals, they defeated Sydney West 5 – 0 in the semi final and in the Grand Final were
just defeated by MacKillop 19 – 12. Congratulations Zac on a fine effort!!!!!
POLDING TOUCH MILLA EVANS
Milla has also competed at Polding level this week. She was playing touch in Wagga. Polding defeated Western 8 – 0, North Coast 3 – 0, Sydney East 3 – 0, CIS 6 – 1, North west 10 – 0 and South Coast 5 – 0. On the
Wednesday Polding defeated Sydney South 4 – 0, Riverina 5 – 0, Hunter 2 – 0, Sydney West 4 – 1. They lost
2 – 1 to Sydney North and had a 0 - 0 draw with MacKillop.In the semis they won against MacKillop 3 – 1
but sadly lost the final 4 – 1 to Sydney North.
Milla’s coach said she was “AMAZING – THROWING HERSELF ALL OVER THE PLACE TO GET THE
TOUCH OR SCORE THE TRY”
This fabulous attitude has earned her a place in the NSW team. She has made 2 NSW teams this year. A feat
I haven’t seen from a St Mary’s Student in my years at the school

Helping children learn positive friendship skills
Importance of children’s friendships
At any age, having friends provides support and promotes mental health and wellbeing. Children’s friendships are
also very important for their social and emotional development. Through friendships children learn how to relate with
others. They develop social skills as they teach each other how to be good friends.
Most children want to have friends. Children who have friends are more likely to be self-confident and perform better
academically at school than those without friends. When children have difficulty in making friends or in keeping them,
it often leads to feeling lonely and unhappy with themselves. Feeling rejected by others may lead to significant
distress. Learning positive friendship skills can help children socially so they feel happier and more confident.
How friendships develop and change
Friendships require give and take. By sharing toys, time, games, experiences and feelings, children learn that they
can have their social needs met and can meet the needs of others. Since friendships develop through this kind of
mutual exchange, close friendships are usually based on well-matched needs.
Children’s friendship needs and skills change as they grow. Similarly, children’s ideas about friendship change as
they develop. This is reflected in the different kinds of activities that children like to spend time doing with their
friends at different ages. The table below indicates the ways children tend to describe close friends and the kinds of
skills that support positive friendships as they develop.

Friendship patterns in the primary school years
Children choose friends who have similar interests and enjoy similar activities. During primary school close friendships are
most often with a child of the same sex. This is related to children’s preferences in play.
Boys tend to prefer active kinds of play in groups, whereas girls typically prefer gentler games in pairs or threes and use
talk more than action. Such preferences may be especially strong around the ages of eight and nine when many children
become more aware of social expectations regarding girls’ and boys’ behaviour.
These expectations can create difficulties for boys who are interested in gentler kinds of play and for girls who prefer the
kind of active play that is usually associated with boys.
Friends cooperate and communicate more with each other than with other children. They also have conflicts more often,
but usually manage to settle them without upsetting the friendship. Friends influence each other’s behaviour. Over time
they may take on similar mannerisms, language and preferences. Although friendships usually have positive effects,
friends who have behavioural problems may encourage problem behaviour in one another.
As children’s interests and developmental needs change, their friendship patterns may also change. By the middle of
primary school it is common for children to form small friendship groups based around similar interests. These groups
often establish their own rules about who can join them. Setting rules and learning to negotiate them is important for
helping children to develop their understanding of social relationships. However, when children lack cooperative
relationship skills it can lead to friendship groups being dominated by some children and excluding others.
Relationship skills are important to a child’s future success as an adult, as well as their day to day lives.
We need to know how to make and maintain friendships, resolve conflict, make decisions and solve
problems to get along in the world.
Children aren’t born with these skills. Like many skills they are learned and improved with regular
practice as children mature.
With positive and effective guidance from families, children can develop these life skills and experience
good mental health and wellbeing.
