River City News June, 2015 MEETING TIME & PLACE 2ND Monday 7:00 PM* Golden Corral Zumbehl Rd St. Charles, MO MISSIOURI DISTRICT - REGION “E” Niehaus Days 2015 From the Front Seat This month has sure been wet, but when we eat inside it doesn't matter. Special thanks to Scott for putting the Texas Roadhouse benefit together. The money raised will go to the Ride For Kids. Niehaus Days have come and gone, and it will be another year before any of us has a chance to win a new bike. I guess we will all have to dream a little more. I wasn't able to make it but from the pictures that Jan took it looks like all were having fun. Praire Town chicken must have been good as always. There were empty plates and full bellies. Run for the wall was another success. Helping the VFW with this endeavor has always been rewarding. Special thanks to all those that helped. Chapter O, W-2 and Z were represented. Thank you so very much. I hope to see you at Branson for the Missouri Rally June 4-6 Kline's Restaurant ride is coming on the 13th. Leave at 10:00 form Phillips 66 at HWY 109 and 100. We don’t normally choose to ride in the rain, but let’s face it….rain happens! There are three key factors to keep in mind to ride safely and enjoyably in the rain. They are traction, visibility, and comfort. Let’s take a brief look at each key. TRACTION - Motorcycle tires today are well equipped to handle surfaces from high mileage, to intense heat and wet roads. So it comes down to how you deal with this difference that will determine your success on wet roads. RULE #1 - SLOW DOWN! We all know our braking distance is increased on wet roads. By lowering our speed we can offset this and reduce our lean angle in the turns. RULE #2 - KEEP IT UPRIGHT! The more upright you are, the more weight is applied to the road, thus the more traction you will get. Avoid last second turns and swerves. RULE #3 - WATCH FOR OIL AND STANDING WATER ON THE ROADS! When that first rain falls and we haven’t had rain for a while, beware of oil at stop signs and on parking lots. Rain also has a bad habit of spreading gravel and dirt on to the road, especially on rural roads. The overall key to remember is that slower is better on wet roads! VISIBILITY - It goes to reason that when there is a lightning storm or a torrential downpour, you need to get safely off the road and wait it out. The most common visibility problem is a fogged up face shield and/or glasses. This problem is always worse when you first start out, but once you get moving, they tend to clear up. Try leaving your face shield slightly open until you are moving, and wait until the last minute to put your helmet on. COMFORT – Anything that distracts you is potentially dangerous! In rain, that distraction could be cold water that leaks past your collar, chilling your whole body. Make sure your rain gear fits properly and is in good shape. Finding the right combination of rain gear, warm jacket, proper pants, boots, and gloves can take a little experience, and in time the reward is well worth it! Properly managing these three factors allows you to concentrate on the road and appreciate the fact that you’ve added another skill set to your riding. Ride Smart and Stay Safe!
