MS STOPS PEOPLE FROM MOVING.
WE EXIST
TO MAKE SURE
IT DOESN’T.
Multiple sclerosis interrupts the flow of information
between the brain and the body and stops people from
moving. We believe moving is not just something you can
or can’t do, but that moving forward is who we are. Just by
being here, you are connected to the potential, the hope,
the momentum of it all.
With the help of people like you, the National MS Society
addresses the challenges of each person whose life is
affected by MS and helps them stay connected to the
great big moving world.
We fund more MS research, provide more services to people
with MS, offer more professional education and further
more advocacy efforts than any other MS organization in
the world. The society is dedicated to achieving a world free
of MS.We are people who want to do something about MS
now.The Minnesota Chapter represents an estimated 9,000
people with MS in Minnesota and western Wisconsin.
Moving research forward.
Research
The National MS Society is moving research
forward to find three cures for MS:
■ A way to stop the disease cold
■ A way to repair existing damage
to the nervous system
Every day, around the world, researchers work to unravel the
mystery of MS.
■ A way to prevent the damage from
ever happening in the future
The society funded more than 380 new
and ongoing MS research projects in 2006,
including several right here in Minnesota.
Since its inception in 1948, the society has
funded more than $500 million in MS research.
Pediatric MS Center of Excellence
The Mayo Clinic Rochester’s Dr. Nancy L. Kuntz (pictured above)
and Dr. Moses Rodriguez are co-directors of one of the six Pediatric
Centers of Excellence that provide specialized pediatric care to
children with MS.The centers were funded as a part of the National
MS Society’s Promise: 2010 Campaign.
2
Moving to reach out and respond to individuals, families
and communities living with multiple sclerosis.
Programs & Services
The National MS Society is moving to address the challenges of each person
whose life is affected by MS, helping them stay connected to the world and
move their lives forward.
In 2006 the Minnesota Chapter provided countless resources throughout
Minnesota and western Wisconsin for people living with MS and their families,
friends and care partners, including:
■ Information and referrals for nearly 5,000 people with MS and their
families.
■ More than $200,000 in financial assistance to help people with MS
purchase durable medical equipment, more than $20,000 in emergency
assistance, more than $30,000 to help care partners take a break as a
part of our respite care program and more than $30,000 to provide
chore services to people with MS.
■ More than 65 support groups.
■ Eight getaways and camps to offer an opportunity for fun, relaxation
and friendship.
■ Dozens of social and educational opportunities for care partners, friends
and families of people living with MS.
■ More than 50 education programs connected more than 7,000 people
to information about MS, symptom management, ways to manage
the challenges of MS and tools for living well with the disease.
■ Thanks to generous donations to the Community Grant Program
totaling $140,000 from Serono Pfizer and Teva Neuroscience, the
chapter was able to provide grants to MS clinics affiliated with the
chapter and other community programs that work to meet the
needs of people with MS including the Fairview MS Achievement
Center. In all the Community Grant Program awarded more than
$230,000 in 2006.
3
“Attending MS Society getaways
has helped us move forward —
as individuals, as a couple and
as a family.”
Susan and Mark Caffrey understand that MS affects not just the
person with the disease and that coping with the challenges
of a chronic illness often calls for a team effort. That’s why Mark,
diagnosed with MS more than 15 years ago, and his wife, Susan,
attended the Couple’s Getaway where they learned about facing
MS together and met other couples living with the disease. Susan
and Mark also attended the chapter’s annual Family Getaway,
along with their three children, and learned about dealing with
MS as a family.
Kingsley Commons, one of the nation’s first housing complexes for people with MS, became a reality in 2006, breaking
ground in August. Construction will be complete in spring 2007.The chapter continues to partner with corporations
and other organizations to address the growing need for housing and other long-term services for people with MS.
4
Public outreach & Advocacy
“I want to educate everyone
and get more teens involved
in the MS Society so hopefully
one day there won’t be MS
Erin Weber serves as chair of
the Minnesota Teen Council,
a group of teens affected
by MS who work to engage
other teens in the society.
Erin also is a volunteer, a
Christopher & Banks MS Walk
and MS Challenge Walk
participant and attends the
chapter’s Youth Camp. Erin’s
father is living with MS and
she has made it her mission
to educate and engage young
people in the movement.
anymore.”
Moving lives forward through
awareness, connections and participation.
Each year the Minnesota Chapter engages thousands of people in the
movement to end MS by:
■ Bringing nearly 100 MS activists to the Minnesota State Capitol
to successfully advocate on issues affecting people with MS.
■ Exhibiting in nearly 100 fairs and conferences, including
the Minnesota State Fair.
■ Providing materials and educational speakers to special event
and program participants.
■ Holding workshops and continuing education for health care,
social service and other professionals who work with people with MS.
■ Publishing four-page inserts in both the Duluth News Tribune and
the Star Tribune, reaching nearly 700,000 people in Minnesota and
western Wisconsin.
■ Garnering more than 700 print articles and nearly 100 television
and radio interviews.
5
“I may only be one person,
but I am also the voice of
everyone who has MS.”
Vicki Quiring attended the Minnesota Chapter’s Advocacy Day
at the Minnesota State Capitol and, after winning an essay
contest, she also attended the National MS Society Public Policy
Conference in Washington, D.C., where she met with her elected
officials to talk about issues affecting people with MS.Vicki also
has been a support group leader for more than 20 years in her
home town of New Ulm, Minn.
Thanks to the hard work of Minnesota Chapter activists and staff, the 2006 Legislative session ended with the
passage of a bill to protect Metro Mobility. Gov.Tim Pawlenty signed the bill in June.

“It’s important to me that I

about MS now.
and really reach out to people
who may be looking for some
support, advice or a friend.”
Volunteers
In 2006 the Minnesota Chapter mobilized
thousands of people who want to do something
about multiple sclerosis now.The energy,
dedication and unique talents and abilities of
our volunteers was evident throughout the year.
Over the last year, Minnesota Chapter volunteers
logged a remarkable 15,000 hours helping at
programs and in the chapter office, and 17,000
hours at special events.
Denice Wax, MS-certified nurse and coordinator of the
University of Minnesota MS Program, volunteered to be
the on-site nurse at the Couple’s, Care Partner’s, Single’s
and Family Getaways and was also the head nurse at
the weeklong MS Camp. Denice offered
emotional support and MS education
to people affected by the disease
by leading a support group and
speaking at the Christopher &
Banks MS Walk and various
chapter programs.
7
Special events
This year’s participants in chapter special events turned moving
into a movement. More than 14,000 people, including more than
800 teams, raised nearly $6 million in 2006. Here are some highlights:
■ The Christopher & Banks MS Walk brought more than 9,000
people together on May 7 in 18 cities throughout Minnesota
and western Wisconsin.
■ The MS 150 Bike Tour presented by GMAC ResCap raised nearly
$2 million and brought 135 teams together for the cause. For the
first time, riders spent Saturday night at Grand Casino Hinckley,
which generously donated its space and grounds crew.
Moving to raise
funds to help
create a world
free of MS.
■ The Star Tribune became title sponsor of the MS TRAM Bike Tour.
Riders were welcomed by host cities La Crescent, Lanesboro,
Winona,Wabasha, River Falls,Wis., and Dakota County Technical
College in the Twin Cities.
■ The Women Against MS luncheon featured marathon runner
Zoe Koplowitz and brought nearly 400 people together,
raising $73,000.

the finish line at MS Camp, a weeklong getaway for
people with MS, and enjoyed lunch with campers.
■ More than 250 people walked 50 miles around the
Twin Cities in the MS Challenge Walk in September.
MS Challenge Walk participants raised more than
$650,000.

“I believe that supporting the National MS Society shows
good corporate citizenship. As a specialty retailer of women’s
apparel, it makes sense for Christopher & Banks to support
a disease in which women are diagnosed two to three
times more frequently than men. The MS Walk also
provides an opportunity for our 6,000 employees
to rally nationwide in support of a great cause.”

Promising treatments for MS
Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve
quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. The National MS Society's medical advisors recommend that people with
MS talk with their health care professional about using one of these medications and about strategies and effective treatments
to manage symptoms. The National MS Society is committed to ensuring that people with MS have the information and quality
care they need to live healthy, productive and independent lives. If you or someone you know has MS, please contact the National
Multiple Sclerosis Society today at www.nationalmssociety.org or 1-800-FIGHT-MS to learn about ways to help manage multiple
sclerosis and about current research that may one day reveal a cure.
