Remember in Prayer
Our Stewardship
of Treasure
As members of the parish faith community, it is our
responsibility to remember both in concrete and
spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each
week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn,
remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings.

Sharing our gi s of me, talent and treasure
Too o en we think of our stewardship of me and talent only in terms of what we do specifically for our parish - being a minister of hospitality, singing in the choir, serving as a sponsor for RCIA...but doing well the work God has called us to in our homes
and/or workplaces is good stewardship too. Being well-prepared and on me for a mee ng, finishing up the last memo even
though the clock says 5:00 PM, or dropping off a teenager at the library to work on a term paper that is "due tomorrow" all
demonstrate good stewardship of our voca ons. Taking a casserole next door when our neighbor's spouse is in the hospital,
wri ng a le er of recommenda on for a job seeker or college applicant, or assis ng a young mother coping with baby and
stroller and luggage as we board a commuter flight are also examples of using our me and talent to "love and serve the Lord."
Using our gi s in love and service is good stewardship and a powerful way to express our gra tude to God for those gi s. Let
us all strive to be stewards of the gi s God has provided to us. Thanks be to God!
“Dearest lord, teach me to be generous; teach me to serve you as you deserve;
to give and not to count the cost.” Igna us of Loyola
Q. What is stewardship?
The concept of Stewardship is receiving Gods gi s gratefully, cul va ng them responsibly, and embracing a spiritual rela onship with God. It is not a program, but a
spiritual consciousness or way-of-life, based in Scripture, which holds that all we are and all we have flows
from God's varied grace. In turn, we serve as spiritual
caretakers of our and worldly blessings.
Q. What makes one a steward?
We are already stewards. Each of us manages our me,
talent and income carefully, so as to fulfill our individual
and family responsibili es. As Chris an stewards, we
receive Gods gi s gratefully, and cul vate them responsibly. We do this in the same way that we provide for
the material needs of our family, as we also have a responsibility to help provide for our parish, our faith
community.
Q. How can I become a be er steward?
Stewardship is living a life of gra tude by the sharing of
ones me, talent, and treasure and making daily decisions that glorify God. Give daily thanks for the blessings
you have received from God, and ask yourself what you
can do to help in your parish community. Being a good
steward also means leading a generous, accountable
way of life rooted in Chris an discipleship.

14th Ordinary Sunday
INDEPENDENCE DAY — MONDAY, July 4th
This Monday we observe the na onal
celebra on of our Na on's independence. As we celebrate let us remember
to pray that God will strengthen and
bless America and make our na on a
haven of liberty and jus ce for all —
born and unborn.
On April 19, 1775, American minutemen faced English soldiers on the village green in Lexington, Massachuse s.
Someone — no one to this day knows who — fired a shot,
and a ba le followed which marked the beginning of the
American Revolu on.
A er the Ba le of Lexington, the desire of Americans for
complete independence from England grew stronger. Less
than a month a er that ba le, the Second Con nental
Congress met in Philadelphia. On July 4, 1776, the Congress
issued a Declara on of Independence, announcing "that
these united colonies are, and of right ought to be, free
and independent states."
For a me it seemed to some that the fight for independence was a hopeless struggle, but an important American
victory at Saratoga marked a turning point in the war. A er
that victory the Americans gained a strong ally, France.
With the help of France, the Americans went on to win a
final victory over the English at Yorktown. The English Parliament then decided to make peace and accept American
independence.
With independence won, the thirteen states set out to
form a new na on. There were strong differences among
the states, but Americans came to understand the need for
unity, and devised a new plan for government—the Cons tu on. The new government, under the Cons tu on, was
faced with many problems, both at home and abroad.
However it found ways to solve these problems, and the
United States began to grow rapidly.

5 Reasons to Stay Until the End of Mass
content from Aleteia by Sr. Theresa Aletheia Noble
Most of us have probably done it at least once or twice.
We make a beeline for the door with our heads down a er receiving
communion because we have something important to do.
We hope our pastor and friends won’t no ce. And perhaps they don’t. But
Someone does.
As a religious sister who has moved around quite a bit, I am surprised by
how dras cally different parishes in some areas of the country are from
others. I am from Oklahoma and rarely see people leaving Mass early. I
used to live in California, and in the parish I a ended, people came late
and some mes le early. I am now in the northeast and am surprised by
how many people leave Mass early. But these pa erns also depend on
the parish. It is an interes ng phenomenon. An isolated incident is not
that concerning to me. But when half the parishioners have disappeared
to the parking lot before the closing song has ended, it makes my heart a li le sad.
Some mes I want to run a er the people I see walking briskly out of church straight from the communion line and shake them
and say, “You have Jesus inside you! Take a minute to talk to him, to thank him, to love him!”
Do you need some mo va on to stay a li le longer to a end the en re Mass? Do you know some other people who might?
Here are some reasons I stay un l the end of Mass, (besides the fact that I am a nun and it would be scandalous if I ran out right
a er communion every Sunday):
1. COMMUNION IS ABOUT COMMUNING: When we receive communion, we receive Jesus himself. When we eat and run it is
like visi ng a friend and the moment he is able to sit down and be present to us we jump up and run out the door yelling, “It was
so great to spend me with you, see you next week!” Communion is about communing with our Lord and Savior. In order to
commune, we have to actually savor this special me with him and take a few moments to be with our Lord.
.2. IT’S NOT NICE TO BE RUDE: Before Mass in the convent, we have a half hour of silent medita on on the Gospel. Some mes I
am late. I walk quickly in with my head down, embarrassed that everyone can see that I slept in. Recently, I realized that my
mo va on to be on me should not be to avoid embarrassment but because I am going to see Jesus. Why are we o en more
concerned with other people’s reac ons than we are with Jesus’? We think, I have to run because I have so much to do, so-andso is wai ng for me! But why is it easy for us to leave early and come late when it is the Creator of the Universe who is hoping to
see us?
3. MASS IS NOT AN ACTIVITY ON A TO-DO LIST: O en when I see people running out of Mass, it seems like they are checking off
an ac vity on their to-do list and want to be done with it. The Chris an life is not a to-do list. It is an invita on to be in
rela onship with God. If we are going to Mass out of a sense of responsibility, sure we may be avoiding mortal sin, but barely
scraping by in the avoidance of mortal sin is not the calling of our spiritual life. We are called to much more. We are called to
rela onship, to holiness, to transforma on.
4. THE FINAL BLESSING IS IMPORTANT: On the Day of Atonement, Zechariah, the father of John the Bap st, had the honor of
going into the holy of holies on the day the angel told him that he and his wife would have a child. The people eagerly waited
outside for him to give them a blessing a er he offered incense. When Zechariah came out mute because he did not believe the
angel’s message, the lack of a blessing amplifies the dishonor and the tragedy of losing his voice. I am sure the people went
home very disappointed. Blessings are precious. When a priest, who by his ordina on is configured to Christ, gives his final
blessing, we are being blessed by God himself. If Jesus were standing ready to give us a blessing before we le Mass and went
back out into the world, wouldn’t you wait for it?
5. YOU GET MORE GRACE: According to the Catechism, “the fruits of the sacraments … depend on the disposi on of the one
who receives them” (CCC 1128). There is a power in the sacraments in and of themselves, but how much of that power seeps
into our souls and plays out in our lives depends on our disposi on. If we are rushing out of church a er communion, chances
are our disposi on is not such that we are reveren ally aware of the amazing fact that we are consuming the body, blood, soul
and divinity of God himself. It’s heavy stuff. And it deserves a disposi on of great respect, if only because we all need all the
grace we can get.

ON BEING WHO WE ARE

Many years ago, I had a freelance wri ng gig for Catholic News
Service. Each week, CNS would give me a ques on concerning the
faith (like, “How do you live the Gospel?”), and my job was to get
answers from four or five strangers around the country. I found
my persons-on-the-street via the Kenedy Directory, a large publica on lis ng parishes throughout the US. I’d call the main office
and ask whoever picked up the phone if he or she would be willing to help me (and if not, if they would direct me to someone
who might). I did this for over five years, and I remember that
only one ques on elicited the same response from every person I
spoke with. I remember this because CNS wanted me to get a
range of responses, but from Hawaii to Maine, I couldn’t deliver
on this one. I don’t recall the ques on verba m, but the gist of it
was this: “What do you value most about our Catholic faith.” And
the rock-solid answer coming back again and again and again was
“Eucharist.”
With this in mind, let me share with you a story that my
daughter Sarah shared with me several weeks back. Sarah is a
part- me waitress at a local eatery, and she was working a First
Communion banquet in a reserved room of the restaurant. When
the celebra on came to an end, everyone went home except the
host family, and as the parents cleaned up, the li le girl--s ll in
her white Communion dress--opened her cards and counted her
money. Apparently thrilled with the haul, she said out loud, “This
is awesome. When do I get to do this again?” The mom respond-
ed, “Probably a er Confirma on.” “What’s that?” the girl asked.
“That’s when Catholics reaffirm their faith,” the mom answered.
“What’s a Catholic,” the girl asked. Perhaps surprised by the
ques on, the mom hal ngly replied, “Well…that’s what you are. ”
Perhaps surprised by the answer, the li le girl just-as-hal ngly
responded, “I don’t think so…”
And here we are, on the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and
Blood of Christ. If ever there was a Scripture passage that defines
us as Catholics, today’s passage is it. Taken from the conclusion of
Christ’s Bread of Life discourse, it doesn’t hint at Eucharist as
some of the earlier passages in the discourse do (like, “I myself
am the bread of life. No one who comes to me shall ever be hungry”). Instead, today’s passage goes right to the flesh-and-blood
of the ma er. “Amen, amen, I say to you,” Jesus says, “unless you
eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not
have life within you.” And, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my
blood remains in me and I in him.” And, “Just as the living Father
sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one
who feeds on me will have life because of me.” I don’t--can’t-comprehend this, OK? And I suspect all of those people responding to the CNS ques on didn’t--couldn’t--either. And yet, each
one of them embraced it as central to their faith. “What’s a Catholic?” the girl asked a er her First Communion. May she grow in
understanding. May all of us do the same.
