Teachers’ new contract freezes wages this year
By Beth Church
Rossford school teachers
will not receive an across-theboard pay raise this year,
according to their new labor
union contract.
At an August 19 meeting,
the Rossford Board of
Education voted 4-1 to
approve the contract.
Superintendent Dan Creps
said the contract–which runs
from September 1, 2013 to
August 31, 2016–grants no
raise this year, a 1 percent
increase next year and a 1.5
percent increase the following year.
The contract does allow
“step raises” to continue for
additional education and
longevity, he said.
Board member Jackie
Brown voted against the con-
tract, citing her concern about
the school district’s tight
budget.
Noting the annual loss of
$1.5 million due to property
values declining, she would
prefer that a one-year contract
was negotiated.
“I would love to give
everyone a raise,” she said.
“But right now, I don’t think
our district can afford it. My
concern is the staff we could
lose because of the things in
this contract.”
Board member Doug
Miller described the contract
as “a good result” of sincere
participation and discussion
among school staff.
The contract also has been
approved by the Rossford
Association of Classroom
Teachers (RACT).
“Through trusted collaboration and the interest-based
bargaining process, we have
agreed to a fair contract that
continues to offer a positive
work environment while providing the best possible service and education to our students,” Mr. Creps said, reading a statement also supported by RACT president Steve
Doughten, a junior high
teacher.
Board member Beverly
Koch thanked RACT members “for working with us so
cooperatively for a good conclusion.”
Mr. Creps said the new
agreement requires employees to pay more in health care
premiums–currently 10 percent, which will increase to
12.5 percent this year and
then 15 percent for the next
two years.
Teachers also will pay
more for doctor visits and
prescriptions, he added.
About 140 teachers are
covered by the contract.
Personnel Issues
The school board took the
following action on personnel
issues:
•Approved the employment of classified personnel–
Lori Krieger, library/clinic
aide
at
Indian
Hills
Elementary, four hours per
day, $16 per hour; Juanita

day, $13.90 per hour, both
effective August 20, 2013.
•Accepted the resignations of Shauna Hunter, jun-
ior high cheerleader advisor,
and Kelly Clarson, junior
high cross country, for 201314.
•Issued supplemental contracts to Kathryn Grinonneau,

Mike Scott resigns from council to join NWSD board
By Beth Church
Headed
to
the
Northwestern Water and
Sewer District, Mike Scott
resigned his position on
Rossford City Council
Monday evening, effective
August 31.
“The last four years have
been very rewarding–and
sometimes frustrating,” he
said, but still encouraged
more residents to become
involved in the community.
Even before the NWSD
board position became available, the councilman had discussed with his family the
idea of not seeking re-election.
“This is a very good way
for me to still work with the
community,” he said.
Mr. Scott thanked his fellow council members, and
especially noted the service
of City Administrator Ed
Ciecka, describing him as “a
true treasure for this community.”
“He does an outstanding
job–it’s been a real pleasure
working with all of you and
Rossford City Council thanked Mr. Scott for his service to the city. From left are Council President Larry Oberdorf,
Mayor Neil MacKinnon III, and Councilman Scott with his mother-in-law Steffie Verbosky, brother-in-law and former
mayor Bill Verbosky and son Michael Scott.
especially Ed,” the councilman said.
Council
members
responded with praise for
Councilman Scott’s service
to the city.
“You’ve brought so much
to the table and had such an
impact,” Council President
Larry Oberdorf said.
Councilman
Greg
Marquette agreed, “Thanks
to Mike, for your time and
your professionalism.”
Council
President
Oberdorf and Mayor Neil
MacKinnon III presented a
plaque to the councilman
who has served as chair of
both the economic development and marina committees.
“You have been an outstanding
colleague,” the
mayor said, describing him
as “a good friend and a big
brother.”
Council member Caroline
Zuchowski Eckel thanked
Mr. Scott for his work on the
ad hoc TARTA committee,
chairing
the
Rossford
Convention and Visitors
Bureau board and leading
the planning committee for
the recent Chautauqua program.
He was a founding member of the Northern Wood
County Port Authority and
served eight years as chairman.
He also was a long-time
board member of the
Rossford Board of Zoning
Appeals, from 1992 to 2007.
“He went above and
beyond to get stuff done for
this community,” Mrs. Eckel
said.
Mr. Scott told council he
has the support of seven
municipalities in NWSD to
be appointed to the board.
Rex Huffman, attorney
for the NWSD board, told
council “your loss is the district’s gain.”
He noted that several
years ago, when the city was
deciding whether to join the
district, council members
were concerned about having
a voice on the NWSD board.
Now as Mr. Scott joins
the board, which also
includes former councilman
Leonard Michaels, “you will
have two really strong voices,” Mr. Huffman added.
“I look forward to working with you,” he said.

By Michael Krieger
The 2013 varsity football
team at Rossford High
School has considerable
momentum after last season’s
tenacious effort.
According to fourth year
head coach Todd Drusback,
the 2012 season was one of
the most inspiring seasons he
has experienced.
Last year, the Bulldogs
gained a measure of success–after several seasons of
futility–by posting a 6-4
mark and the first winning
season since 2007’s team
earned a trip to the state playoffs.
The season was an emotional one, especially for a
large group of seniors still
stinging—yet inspired—by
the passing of teammate
with the coaching staff and
ultimately, the team’s confidence has improved.
“They now feel like they
can win; it’s a different mindset,” Drusback said.
He can’t help but look
ahead positively to the start
of the season, which kicks off
this Friday, August 30 at
home against Bowling
Green.
That will be a special
evening for Bulldog football.
The RHS Class of 1993 will
celebrate their 20th reunion.
Players from that team (1992
season) are invited to join
current Bulldogs standing on
the sideline during the game.
Two Rossford alums, and two
of the school’s most impacting football players from the
Class of ’93–Christopher
Bulldogs look to contend on the gridiron after emotional season
Kerry Keller, who lost a yearlong battle with cancer.
“Last year moved us in
the right direction,” Drusback
said. “The seniors had a very
emotional season, and they
rode that emotion for the
whole year.”
The true accomplishment
for the Bulldogs is that they
now believe in themselves
and are coming into the new
season with confidence and
heart–both qualities learned
from last year’s squad.
Despite losing several key
contributors to graduation,
the Bulldogs still believe that
they are ready to compete for
an
Northern
Buckeye
Conference title this year.
In fact, Drusback believes
in his team’s goals of winning
the conference and hoping
for a birth in the state playoffs
are realistic.
“It depends on how our
young guys respond. They
are talented guys, but they
lack some game experience,”
he explained.
The coach also believes
that the young Bulldogs are
about a year away from being
a consistent contender in the
NBC.
The new crop of Bulldog
seniors have demonstrated a
strong work ethic, and all of
them will play a significant
role in the team’s continued
resurgence.
Now that the players are
in their fourth season of
Drusback’s system, the coach
has seen improvements in
team chemistry. Players are
building better relationships
Holifield
and
Robert
Owens–will address the team
prior to the game.
Coach Drusback believes
it is important for his studentathletes to connect with the
Rossford legacy of football
success. “I always ask [the
team], ‘how are you going to
be remembered? Did you
make the most of your opportunities while you were
here?’” he added.
Several seniors will hold
the key to success this season. Aaron Kolbe returns to
anchor the defense from the
nose guard position.
Returning seniors on the
offensive line–Nolan Duly
and Josh Maas–should be
able to open plenty of holes
for the skills set players like
seniors Dylan Losiewicz and
sophomore Erik Davis.
Junior John Allen and
sophomore Kyle Sherman
seem ready to initially share
the quarterbacking duties,
according to Drusback.
In addition to swinging
passes to Losiewicz, who
plays a hybrid running back
and wide receiver position,
seniors Noah Asmus and A.J.
Santellana should catch passes at the wide out positions in
the Bulldogs’ up tempo
offense.
If the Bulldogs can continue to build on the accomplishments of the 2012 team,
perhaps, they will secure
their own spot in the
Rossford legacy as the team
continues to “Kerry On,”
paving the way for a bright
future.
The Northwestern Water
and Sewer District soon will
replace an existing 12-inch
public water line along River
Road.
The project extends from
Eagle Point Road in Rossford
to East Boundary Street in
Perrysburg, affecting many
residents in Rossford and
Perrysburg Township.
Construction will begin in
mid to late September and
continue through next spring,
according to John Sopko,
NWSD project manager.
It is “part of an on-going
effort by the district to
improve water quality, service to your property and
increase fire protection,” he
said.
Water service interruption
may occur during construction, but affected residents
will be notified.
Local traffic to residents’
homes will be maintained.
Buckeye Excavating will
perform construction on
behalf of NWSD, but an
NWSD inspector will be on
site at all times.
The following neighborhoods will be affected by the
water line project.
Stonecroft Drive
Existing 4-inch service
line and 8-inch main that goes
down Stonecroft will be temporarily out of service leaving
everyone without water.
St. Luke’s services has a
6-inch water line which will
be out of service while it is
being switched to the new
water main.
Rockledge Drive
Existing 6-inch water
main will leave about a dozen
homes without water service
while it is being switched to
the new 12-inch.
The existing 6-inch water
main along Secor Woods will
be out of service while
switched over to the new 12inch. This will leave all of the
residents along Secor Woods
Lane without water, about 13
homes
Rockledge Drive and
Hufford Road
Along Rockledge, the
existing 6-inch water main
will be temporarily out of
service, leaving 10 homes out
of service while it is being
switched.
Existing 6-inch water
main along Hufford will be
out of service while it is
switched. This will leave
about 10 homes without
water for a short period of
time.
Ford
Road
and
Turnpike Underpass
While construction is
occurring under the turnpike,
temporarily traffic signals
will be needed because traffic
will be down to one lane.
The existing 12-inch
water main along Ford will
put several residents along
Ford between White and
River roads out of service
while it is switched to the
new line.
Duxbury Lane
The existing 8-inch water
main that follows Duxbury
will be temporarily out of
service while it is reconnected to the new 12-inch line
along River Road. This will
leave all residents along
Duxbury without service
since it is not a looped system.
Shelbourne
Road,
Hamlet
Commons,
Somerset Road
The existing 8-inch water
main along Shelbourne will
be out of water service as it is
reconnected to the new main.

Some of the raffle prize baskets await their winners at the Edward Ford Park.
‘Strolling Downtown’ participants raise
$470 toward new beautification projects
The “Strolling Downtown” event, hosted by the
the Rossford Beautification
Committee last Saturday,
raised $470.
Kathy Kornasiewicz, one
of the event’s coordinators,
said the funds will be used
for new landscaping in the
downtown business district.
“Those participating in
the walk enjoyed meeting
the business owners and
learning more about what is
available in our downtown
business district,” she said.
Participants also visited
the Edward Ford Memorial
Park and the memorial
itself–many for the first
time, she added.
Music provided by D.J.
Hiner, choral director at
Rossford High School,
brought many comments
that the park would be a perfect venue for a regular
“Music in the Park” event.
“All who participated
thoroughly enjoyed this
event, and would like to see
Strolling Downtown held
again next year,” Mrs. Kornasiewicz said.
The following businesses
participated Amerasia, Bulldog Diner, Danny’s Cafe,
Delightfully Done Cafe,
Dear Editor:
Special praise and recognition to Kathy Kornasiewicz, Barb Montague
and their committee for the
outstanding job of organizing Strolling Downtown. It
was a great idea, and I’m
glad I survived it. I met several new businesses in town
and the people operating
them. If you weren’t able to
make it, you won’t want to
miss the opportunity next
year.
Please support your local
merchants in town. I can’t
understand why more people don’t avail themselves of
the opportunity to support
these people. They are honest, hard-working people
who provide something for
you, and you don’t have to
travel far to receive their
services and merchandise.
Become a proud member
of the community and support them as often as you
can. I know they would
appreciate it.

Water line replacement
ÁContinued from page 1
duplexes out of service.
The apartments at the
Hamlet Commons will be out
of service as they reconnect the
6-inch line to the new water
main.
The 8-inch water line along
Somerset will be out of service
while it is connected to the
new water main. This outage
will put six homes out of water
service.
Knight Park
Knight Park will be temporarily out of water service
while the 2-inch line is reconnected.
Sussex Drive
The existing 8-inch water
line along Sussex will be out
of service while it is reconnected to the new water main.
Only about four homes will be
affected since this system is
looped and has valves at Fox
and Durham roads.
Hospice
The existing 8-inch water
line for Hospice will be out of
service for a short period of
time as they connect it to the
new 12-inch along River
Road.
Morningside Drive
The existing 8-inch water
main will be out of service as it
gets reconnected to the new
12-inch water main. This outage will affect a large number
of houses.
Waterford Drive
The existing 8-inch line
will be out of service as it is reconnected to the 12-inch water
main.
This will put a handful of
homes out of service.
Hickory Hill Drive
As the existing 8-inch line
is reconnected all of the homes
along Hickory Hill drive will
be out of water service.
This is a looped system so
the valve at the end of Waterford will have to be shut off.
Jacqueline Road
The existing 8-inch water
line is a looped system so
houses along Jacqueline
should not experience any outage.
They will do one disconnection and reconnection of
the 8-inch at a time.
Bates Road
The existing 12-inch water
main will be out of service for
a short period of time. About
six homes will be affected as
long as the gate valve down
Bates Road is closed.
Rosedale Place
The existing 6-inch water
main along Rosedale will be
out of water service while the
new connection is being made.
This is a looped system, but
about 20 homes still will be affected during this outage.
Island View Road
According to the district’s
GIS, there should be no outages because there are two
valves at the intersection of Island View and Schreier that
can be shut off.
Lime City Road
While the existing 12-inch
along Lime City is being reconnected, about 10 homes
will be without water.
Elm Tree
With the placement of
valves, no outage should be
experienced by anyone. The
existing 6-inch water main is
looped and with closing the
valve where Elm Tree comes
into Lime City, it will be possible to shut it down with no
businesses or houses affected.
Colony Road
With the existing 6-inch
water main, houses along
Colony Road will be temporarily out of water service.
Colony Court also will be out
of service while this reconnection is taking place.
Rossburn Place
The existing 6-inch water
main will be temporarily out of
service while they make the
new connection. The outage
will occur between River Road
and 137 Rossburn.
Vineyard Drive
The existing 8-inch water
main along Vineyard will be
completely shut down while
the reconnection is made. This
will cause about two dozen
homes to be without water
service.
Rossway Avenue
The 6-inch water main
along Rossway will be temporarily out of service. This
outage will affect the
Rossview Apartments.

Staff from local school districts attended a training August 16 at Owens Community
College that featured the mock hijacking of a school bus.
A bus departed from the Rossford School District garage at 8:30 a.m. and was “hijacked” by a member of the Northern Wood County SWAT team, demanding the bus be
taken to the Owens Center for Emergency Preparedness on Tracy Road.
Above, school staff sit on the Owens campus to watch a live video feed from on- board
the bus of students “taken hostage.”
Participating school districts were Rossford, Springfield, Toledo, Washington Local,
Otsego, Bowling Green, Perrysburg and Northwood.
The intent of the training was to better prepare professionals to manage services during an emergency situation, according to Jeff Culler, Rossford Schools transportation
director.
Below, SWAT members prepare to enter the bus. Rossford, Lake and Perrysburg Township police also participated, along with Rossford, Northwood, Lake and Perrysburg
Township fire departments.
Above, the “victims” of the hijacking are treated by
Rossford EMS personnel.
All students who took part in the training were aware of
the drill and agreed to participate.
They signed waivers, and those under 18 years old had
parental permission.

Signage request denied by Perrysburg Twp. BZA
At the August 20 meeting,
the Perrysburg Township
Board of Zoning Appeals denied a request to increase the
size of a monument sign
along U.S. Route 20.
Perry Retail Associates,
LLC, 5800 Monroe Street,
Toledo, asked the BZA for a
variance to install an electronic message sign above
the existing Tuffy sign at the
intersection of Route 20 and
Oakmead Drive.
The township’s zoning
code calls for monument
signs in the C-2 community
business district along the
Route 20/23 overlay zone to
“not exceed eight feet in
height, 14 feet in width and
80 square feet in area.”
Because the proposed
sign exceeds the maximum
sign height by 2.9 feet and
the maximum area by 35.73,
the company needs a variance.
Bruce Kearns of Perry
Retail Associates said the
signage is for a new tenant,
Grape Leaf Express, which is
opening a restaurant in the
corner of the L-shaped retail
plaza.
Noting that other signs
along the Route 20 corridor
are larger, Mr. Kearns said
the signage request is not
“unreasonable.”
Board members pointed
out that some signage was
grandfathered prior to the
change in the zoning resolution, and other signs on
Route 20 are outside the
township jurisdiction in
Rossford or Perrysburg.
Mr. Kearns contended
that adding the electronic
sign will provide Grape Leaf
with “immediate recognition” and believes the addition to the monument sign
will be less objectionable
than placing a lighted sign on
the building itself.
In denying the variance,
the BZA noted that the board
has rejected past similar requests by other businesses in
the overlay district.

Card of
Thanks
We would like to give a
heartfelt thank you to the
families, friends and community of Rossford for the
support and prayers you all
have given us as our son
began and continues to
fight against cancer.
The support you have
given us through donations,
fund-raisers and meals has
meant a lot to our family.
Your continued generosity
and kindness has been and
continues to be overwhelming.
Gavin’s Warriors are
truly amazing!
We also would like to
thank all those, whose
names are too many to
mention in fear of forgetting someone, who helped
with the reverse raffle this
past June. From those who
donated items, helped set
up and run the event, and
attended either in person or
by proxy, we cannot begin
to tell you how much this
has meant to us during this
difficult time. We have
been amazed at the support
from the community and
appreciate all that has been
done for us.
Your support has been
humbling and helps keep
us going when things get
tough.
Again, thank you to
everyone.

65, died August 20, 2013, at
his Springfield Township
home. He was born April 14,
1948, in Toledo, to Steve and
Cecelia Chromik. His goal
to reach his 40th wedding
anniversary to wife, Bonnie,
was fulfilled on May 14,
2013.
A 1967 graduate of
Calvin M. Woodward High
School, he enlisted in the
U.S. Navy, where he received an honorable discharge.
He
continued
serving his community when
he was hired at the Lucas
County Sheriff’s Office in
1969, where he obtained numerous commendations and
awards. He also trained with
the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Narcotics
and Dangerous Drugs, and
the Ohio Attorney General’s
Office of Criminal Identification and Homicide Investigation, among others.
He received the Outstanding Officer of the Year
award in 1976. As a robbery/homicide detective he
tirelessly devoted himself to

commitment to the community continued after leaving
law enforcement, as he
wrote many letters on the behalf of deceased victims,
when their perpetrators were
up for parole. He chose to
change his profession in
1980 and joined the Seaway
Food Town Company, where
his career focused on corporate security. After his career

Linda McMahon, Judy Converse honored
as 2013 Patricia Gladieux award winners
Rossford School District
employees Judy Converse
and Linda McMahon are the
recipients of this year’s Patricia Gladieux Employee-ofthe-Year awards.
Ms. McMahon, a clinic
aide at the high school, was
the classified recipient.
Ms. Converse, a music
teacher at Eagle Point and Indian
Hills
elementary
schools, was the certified recipient.
The award is annually
presented to employees who
show outstanding character
in working with children in
the school district.
“It recognizes those who
teach or demonstrate genuine
concern, enthusiasm, moral
character, charity, positive attitude and patriotism beyond
what is required in their daily
duties to a degree of being
outstanding and showing un-
selfish devotion to job-students-community,” Superintendent Dan Creps explained.
The two award winners
were surprised with the announcement at a back-toschool assembly for teachers
August 16.
Mr. Creps listed some of
the comments about the
women, who were nominated by their peers.
Ms. Converse “has compassion for not only her job,
but for her students” and is “a
very motivating colleague
and supports fellow staff.
She is unselfish with her
time.”
She “works diligently and
teaches with her heart and
soul.”
She has proven her dedication to the children of
Rossford, the staff and parents and “puts her students
first before her own self and
works tirelessly.”
Her colleagues also noted
Ms. Converse is “passionate
and has been a mentor to so
many of us on the staff.”
The superintendent described Ms. McMahon as
dedicated to her work and
concerned with the welfare
of students.
She is courteous and
adept at spotting potential issues that may threaten students’ safety, and is calm and
collected in difficult or
stressful situations.
Ms. McMahon is pragmatic and has a commonsense approach that helps
students remain grounded.
“Her commitment to our
school is genuine,” Mr.
Creps said. “She goes above
and beyond to help everyone.
She has a tremendous
amount of patience and a
strong desire to do whatever
it takes to help.”

RHS girls varsity tennis team looks to surprise
By Michael Krieger
The Rossford High School
girls tennis team is off to an
early 2-2 start to the season–a
record that first-year coach
Stacy Jurich has been happy
to attain.
Seven players returned
from last year’s squad, although the majority do not
have much varsity tennis experience.
Despite youth and inexperience, the Lady Bulldogs
have demonstrated a strong
competitive nature so far, according to their coach.
The returning players–
Carly Hollerbach, Beth
Bergstrom, Kaitlyn Maxwell,
Bailee Self, Sarah Hufford,
Aly Hope and Bethany
Price–are simply focusing on
improvement through the
course of the season.
“If we continue to improve, it’s likely that we might
upset someone by the end of
the year,” Coach Jurich said.
Even though this is Jurich’s first season at Rossford,
she is no stranger to coaching
high school tennis after
spending seven years at St.
Ursula as a junior varsity
coach.
She is positive when she
thinks about the future of the
Rossford team.
RHS girls varsity tennis team members are, from left, front row: Debora Beilstein, Sarah Hufford, Laura Reitz, Aly Hope;
middle row: Carly Hollerbach, Hannah Gauthier, Bethany Price; and back row: Kaitlyn Maxwell, Bailee Self, Beth
Bergstrom and Coach Jurich.
“Most players are young,”
Jurich said, “and it will be a
learning season. We’re going
to focus on developing the
program and the team.”
This young team is not
without
bright spots–most
no
tably, junior Carly Hollerbach
who brings enough talent and
experience to be considered
one of the top players in the
area.
Coach Jurich believes that
it will be exciting to see
Hollerbach compete because
this season is key in “taking
that next big step in her high
school career.”

If the team gains contributions from the rest of the
squad, the girls should improve on last year’s 9-11 overall record.
Tennis teams at RHS do
not play for a league title as
Rossford is only one of two
schools that have tennis in the
Northern Buckeye Conference.
Still, with continuous improvement and budding competitiveness, the team looks to
peak for the sectional tournament by the end of the season.

Cross country Bulldogs focusing on improvement
By Michael Krieger
The boys and girls cross
country teams at Rossford
High School began their
seasons August 24 at Mill
Creek Golf Course in Sandusky at the Panther Run for
Fun.
This event, hosted by
Sandusky St. Mary’s, is the
cross country version of a
scrimmage since runners
only run two miles instead
of the usual 3.1 miles for
regular meets.
The teams are led by veteran coach Vern Kiehl, in
his second season at RHS.
Previously, he led Perrysburg’s varsity for nine seasons and served as an
assistant at Bowling Green
for a year as well.
The coach has placed the
emphasis this year, not on
winning, but simply on
striving to improve in any
way possible. He looks for
opportunities for his Bulldogs to improve their times
and their competitiveness as

Last year was Smale’s
first season as a cross country runner, and now according to Kiehl, has a better
understanding of the sport
and is more conscious about
what to do to be successful
this year.
“It’s not out of the question for Taylor to place at
the league meet this year,”
Kiehl said.
The girls team is nearly a
mirror image of the boys.
It features eight runners,
four of whom (Jessica
Pietrasz, Maddie York,
Madie Potts and Samantha
Strohm) return from last
year’s team that finished
sixth in the NBC.
And like the boys, the
they gain more race experience.
Like many of the varsity
teams at RHS, the cross
country team also is young
and inexperienced.
The boys team only returns three lettermen in Taylor Smale, Evan Austin and
Marty Linthicum. With only
seven runners on the team,
the Bulldogs are still interested in adding people to the
team even at this late date.
Last season the boys finished eighth in the NBC;
however, the team does have
a bright spot in Smale. The
Bulldogs’ number one runner is a senior and again will
be expected to shoulder the
load for the team in races.
girls’ Jessica Pietrasz is a
bright spot on a team that is
in the present focused primarily on developing the
program.
Also a senior in her second year running, Pietrasz is
primed to compete at a high
level this season.
Kiehl believes she is
ready to take the next step
after experiencing a big
learning year last season.
Pietrasz, a former state
qualifier in track, is no
stranger to this kind of challenge.
“If everything falls into
place, she might be able to
qualify for regionals–it’s not
out of the question,” Kiehl
said.
