Sixty family members and friends gathered to honor Legacy resident veterans: Don Gilbert, Jimmy Summerour and Jake Bemrick. The mistress of ceremonies, Paula Nusz – Legacy Resident Services Coordinator, opened the event with a welcome and introduction of the men. Eagle Scout, William Thetford, led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. He gave a short presentation about why American flags are folded into a triangle. William presented to each veteran a flag that had been flown over the United States Capital building in Washington D.C. These flags were obtained through Rep. Mac Thornberry’s office. Debbie Black, a representative of the Quilts of Valor organization, presented a short program about the Quilts of Valor and their origin and purpose. Each quilt can take 50-60 hours to make. Each quilt is registered in the National Foundation for record keeping purposes. Each quilt is donated, and the makers receive no financial contributions for their efforts. The first quilt was presented in 2003 to a warrior at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Debbie then “wrapped each warrior” in their very own Quilt of Valor. These quilts are made to be used, not to be stuffed in a closet. Many hands have touched them, and each veteran will feel the love that has been placed in their quilt. The mission statement for the Quilts of Valor organization is: “To honor all veterans touched by war”. In Tuesday night’s game versus Friona, the Tornadoes shot 23-80 from the court, slightly better than 25 percent. In their win in the previous game, a game at a neutral site against the No. 15 team in the state in 3A Childress, they shot better, 22-59, but still were 3-17 from threepoint land shot less than 50 percent from inside the arc. However, despite Texline’s apparent ineptitude to put the ball in the bucket, the Tornadoes are 3-0 on the season with two wins away from home against solid teams and another at home against a much improved Borger team. All that matters in the end is the fact that Texline is currently winning despite their shooting woes. “Oh we’ve put up way too many bricks,” Aaron Gutierrez said. “We could shoot way better.” It’s kind of a catch-22 though for Texline. Early on in the season new head coach Bryan Braddock is trying to up the tempo of this offense. He wants Texline to be getting at least 75 shots a game and wants upward of 80. Texline did just that on Tuesday night in the win over See ICE on page B6 Gannen Braddock (5) pulls up for a three-pointer at the buzzer at the end of the first half. Texan Photo by Thomas Lott Escape in Friona Texline leaves with win in back and forth battle with Chiefs on road By THOMAS LOTT T Texan Photo by Thomas Lott Carlos’ Espino’s second three was a big one on Tuesday. Remember that word--Discipline Tornadoes get away from offense at times, leads to inefficiency By THOMAS LOTT A 3-0 record against teams ranked in the Top 20 in the state and formidable opponents from classifications higher than yours is nothing to be disappointed in. The Texline Tornadoes have an unblemished re- cord with wins over Borger, Childress and Friona, all schools with more students and good records, but they have left each of those games wanting more. They have left each of those games knowing they could have played better and having fallen into some of the same bad habits they had last season. See AWAY on page B6 he Texline Tornadoes moved to 3-0 on the season with a 62-60 win over Friona on Tuesday night. Aaron Gutierrez led the attack for Texline scoring 33 points and adding 10 rebounds. The 33 points was a season high for the senior. He is averaging a doubledouble per game in 2014. But the biggest part of the game on Tuesday night was the foul trouble for Texline. Freshman post Carter Laramore grabbed three fouls in the first half, and every starter for Texline had at least three fouls in the game with four of them having four or more. Add that to the fact that Tristan Womble went down with an ankle injury in the first half and Texline was doing all they could to simply keep five athletes on the floor at once in such a close game. “The foul trouble, it hurt us a lot,” Gutierrez said. “We weren’t in rhythm in offense, we’re not hitting shots, that’s us, Speedy, Carlos (Espino) not hitting shots, I mean, we need him to hit shots right now, but still we pulled out the win not even shooting well.” Texline was 23-80 from the floor on Tuesday night and 6-30 from three-point land. Gutierrez was the only starter to shoot better than 40 percent on the night. But the defense was good enough to keep Friona off balance as well. The Chiefs were held to 40 percent shooting on their home court, and fortunately for the Tornadoes, they were just 12-22 from the free throw line. That is where head coach Bryan Braddock wanted to see some improvement. See FRIONA on page B2 Aaron Gutierrez had 33 points and 10 rebounds on Tuesday night. Texan Photo by Thomas Lott Page B2 Tuesday, December 2, 2014 Sports News Texan Photo by Thomas Lott Carter Laramore fouled out in the third quarter with four points and six rebounds. Friona (continued from page B1) Late in the game with the foul trouble the Tornadoes were not giving their best effort to get stops on the defensive end, and even when they did, they couldn’t keep from fouling. That’s something Braddock will be working on at the beginning of this week. “It’s being able to have 80 possessions and still wanting to stop people and I feel like we got out of that a little bit,” he said. “We got up to 80 possessions but still our defensive mind kind of flopped.” In the final few minutes Texline gave up some easy baskets right after they extended their lead to four points. Those possessions kept Friona in the game. But give credit to Friona too, they gave Texline one heck of a fight in the final game before Thanksgiving break and that is what Braddock wants too. “That’s exactly what we’re looking for,” he said. “Every game we want somebody to come out and compete and there’s always somebody to play, we’ve got the schedule as tough as we can get it, Stratford’s playing football so we come and Carlos Espino defends on the perimeter. get another 3A, just trying to improve.” Dalhart Texan Texline was originally scheduled to play Stratford on Tuesday night but adjusted their schedule because of the football playoffs. But Friona gave them everything they could handle. They led 12-6 after the first quarter and fought all the way back to tie the game at 51 after Texline led 43-34 at the end of the third quarter. But thanks to nine fourth quarter points by Gutierrez and a big three-pointer from Espino, Texline was able to pull away and maintain a perfect 3-0 record. “That’s the whole key, learning to win close games and making shots down the stretch,” Braddock said. “We got a few put together down the stretch and they kept coming, they’re senior led, got two senior guards that are brothers, No. 1 and No. 23, one’s a step-brother and one’s the coach’s kid so what a win. “A win’s a win, doesn’t matter if it’s by two or it’s by 20, we’re not too worried about what the people are going to think when they look at the papers tomorrow, we’re not worried about that, we’re going to try to take care of ourselves and continue to improve.” Texline plays Dalhart tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Dalhart. Dalhart is 0-2 on the seaTexan Photo by Thomas Lott son. Texline is 3-0. Read the extended preview on B6. Buzzer Beaters: More on Texline’s win over Friona By THOMAS LOTT P ossessions. It looks like that is going to be the word of the day for Texline Tornadoes. Head coach Bryan Braddock wants a lot of them and he wants them to be efficient. On November 21 versus Childress, Texline had a good number of efficient possessions, but they didn’t have enough of them. On November 25 versus Friona, the Tornadoes had a lot of possessions, but they were not very efficient. The early part of the season is going to be all about putting it all together for Texline and as has been mentioned before, they are not there yet. There is going to be an adjustment period especially for players like Gannen Braddock and Carter Laramore, two freshmen that are going to be vital to Texline’s success. Over the last two games Braddock has been hit or miss in the shooting department, but his passing has been pretty good. He is averaging some six assists per game over the last two, which isn’t bad at all. However, in the game of possessions and efficiency, Texline and Braddock are still searching for the best form of action. Texline scored 62 points on Tuesday night. Only eight of the eventual 23 successful baskets were aided by an assist. And with 80 shots being taken on the night, Texline was clearly not in an effective offense to get easy shots out of their sets. Braddock is getting the assists at the moment, but early on here Texline also needs to look to distribute as a team. That will certainly be on their mind tonight when they take on Dalhart. Womble on and off the court Texline has confidence across every position this season including their bench. The main reason is because Miles Cantrell has starting experience and is a high energy guy, Dawson Nicholson can shoot and plays good defense, and Tristan Womble finds a way to make an impact play whether its’ by forcing a turnover or knocking down a three when he is called upon. Womble had three steals in the first half on Tuesday night, and made an easy lay-up on a fast break off of one of those steals, but unfortunately he went down with an ankle injury soon after that. Anthony Grimes drives to the basket. He had six points and eight rebounds. He has gone out with ankle injuries in each of the past two games and when he goes down, Texline’s already shallow bench gets even smaller. Womble can make an impact when he is on the court. He has shown just that. Just hopefully he can stay on the points on Tuesday night so court for longer in the near every single point mattered future. to the very last second. Gannen Braddock had a Every little thing counts steal and hit a three as the buzzer sounded to end the I forgot to mention this so first half and put Texline up this is where it is going to by five at the half. go. Texline won by just two The effort proved to be Texan Photo by Thomas Lott some of the difference in the game in the long run. It’s always good to hit a buzzer beating three, it’s also better to do it when you realize the difference in the game was ultimately two points. Good way to end a half too. Page B6 Dalhart Texan Tuesday, December 2, 2014 Sports News Away (continued from page B1) On Tuesday night against Friona in the Tornadoes’ final game before Thanksgiving break, Texline’s bad habits nearly came back to haunt them and almost handed them their first loss of the season. At the beginning of the season Aaron Gutierrez said Texline needed to be more disciplined this season. He admitted they have a long way to go in that regard after Texline’s narrow escape on Tuesday night. “We’re not disciplined,” he said. “(We’re taking) bad shots, we’re cold, shooting 3’s, 3’s, 3’s. We need to get to the bucket or do something else.” Texline did get three-point happy on Tuesday night. The Tornadoes took 80 shots in the win 30 of which were from beyond three-point land. That is all well and good if at least 25 to 30 percent of those are going in, but Texline finished 6-30 from three-point land for a cool seven percent from beyond the arc. Head coach Bryan Braddock is happy with the number of possessions, he wants to up the tempo and be in the 80 possession range each and every game, but he wants those shots to get better down the road. There is clearly room for improvement. “It’s hard on the coach because some of that discipline problem might be on me, when I know Gannen (Braddock) can get by anybody and I know Aaron can get by anybody it’s easy to go four-low,” he said. “And I told Aaron we’re going fourlow and I don’t do four-low to do 15-foot jumpers and then he tries to get to the hole and they call a charge or whatever.” The foul situation did have something to do with the jump shot situation in the win. Every single starter for the Tornadoes finished the game with at least three fouls while four of the five had at least four. But Gutierrez and Braddock know they settled for too many jump shots. And when their season ended last season because they settled for similar jump shots, Gutierrez knows his team has to improve in those situations and it starts with him. “That applies to all of us,” he said. “Me included, everyone.” Texan Photo by Thomas Lott Anthony Grimes is one of three returning starters for Texline this season. Dalhart takes on Texline Neighboring opponents face off tonight in XIT City By THOMAS LOTT T exline and Dalhart faced off one time last season. The Golden Wolves traveled up to Texline to face off with the Tornadoes and took them down on their home court 75-53. Dalhart was led by senior Hayden Smith in the game, but they return no starters from that match-up this season. The Tornadoes return three starters from the game. However, last season the Tornadoes did not have reigning six-man player of the year Aaron Gutierrez in their line-up. Former head coach Tanner Martin decided to sit the player of the year to rest him after he sustained an injury a week before at the Gruver Holiday Classic in the semi-finals against Gruver. Without Gutierrez Texline was 1-2 last season. (I’m counting the loss to Canadian because he played some, but came out pretty early). They lost to Dalhart and beat Hartley without him in the line-up at all. Texline and Dalhart are not rivals by any means, but Texline does enjoy beating Dalhart when they get the chance. They certainly have the chance this season. Dalhart went winless against the Tornadoes during the summer league and lost to them when they had their entire starting line-up during the final week of the summer season. Texline is 3-0 this season with wins over Borger, Childress and Friona. Dal- hart is 0-2 with losses to Dumas and Vega. The Tornadoes defeated Dumas during a scrimmage at the beginning of the season. The big issue coming into this game for Texline is their shooting. Over the last two games they are shooting just 32 percent from the field and are shooting just 19 percent from the three-point line. If they continue to shoot that way Dalhart can hang around. They are going to be able to stay close early with their athleticism. They can compete with teams defensively no matter what. But Dalhart is having trouble scoring of their own. They are averaging barely 40 points per game in their two losses and will have trouble keeping up with Texline if they shoot well. Actually, if Texline shoots well, Dalhart will not be able to keep up. Very few teams can, that is not a shot at Dalhart. It’s just simple. Texline has the capability of scoring upwards of 80 points per game. Dalhart is not built like that as a team. If they get into a shootout Texline will win. Dalhart’s only hope is to slow the game down. Think Baylor versus Kansas State this weekend. If Kansas State can keep Baylor’s offense off the field they can win that game. If Dalhart can possess the ball and throw Texline off their game they could keep up. That’s what they have to do at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Dalhart. It’s a tall order, but who knows what could happen? That’s why you have to go see the game yourself. Tristan Womble had three steals on Tuesday night. Ice (continued from page B1) Friona, but shooting 28 percent from the field was not the ultimate plan Braddock had in mind. As of this moment the shot selection is not ideal and a lot of shots aren’t falling because of that. Braddock wants to team to realize that he doesn’t want them just to get 80 possessions or 80 shots, he wants them to have 80 effective possessions with the right shots. Not to mention the fact that they have to get back to play defense after they have taken said shots. “Tonight we got up to 80 possessions and 80 possessions when you get that many shots anybody would think that we should have won by 30, but we win by two,” he said. “That’s just part of it, you’ve got to get stops, and that’s the thing, it’s being able to have 80 possessions and still want to stop people.” And Texline once again did do a very good job of stopping people. They held their opponent to 40 percent shooting for the second consecutive game, but they allowed Friona to take 52 shots of their own. Some of that is Texline having 80 shots of their own, a little bit more is not playing the on-ball pressure defense they would like to play. Aaron Gutierrez fights through a foul in the second quarter. “We got up to 80 possessions but then our defensive mind kind of flopped,” Braddock said. “It was like ‘Hey, if they score, it’s OK,’ it was kind of back to last year and, you know, I don’t want that, I’ll slow the tempo down and keep the score in the 40s be- fore I’ll do that.” Texline would have scored in the 40s had they not had as many shots as they did in the Friona game. Everyone was cold from the field really with the exception of Gutierrez who finished with 33 points and 10 rebounds, Texan Photo by Thomas Lott but the senior and former sixman player of the year still shot less than 50 percent from the field, which he is more than capable of besting. And then you have Carlos Espino. There are very few shooters in the region that can keep up Texan Photo by Thomas Lott with Espino from the three-point line. When he is on he can hit 10 threes in a game at will and put teams away on his own. But over the last two games he has been cold as ice. He was 2-11 from three against Childress and 2-16 from three against Friona. It has been a long time since Espino has been this cold and it is affecting Texline’s offense right now. However, when you have a shooter as talented as the senior Espino, the last thing you do is tell him to stop shooting. And although he started the game 1-15 from three, he was able to hit a big three-pointer to give Texline a late four-point lead and put the game almost out of reach for the Chiefs. Espino and the Tornadoes may be cold, but they are not, nor should they, going to stop shooting. Espino’s big three-pointer is the perfect example. “We’ve got to get Speedy (Espino) rolling,” Braddock said. “I don’t know what he was again, but definitely came through in the clutch. It put the dagger in and that’s the type of kid he is, he’s going to shoot because every shot’s going in, every time he gets it he’s going to shoot it because he spends time in the gym and he knows eventually he’s going to make it.” So for now Texline is cold. But they are winning. Once they start hitting shots and keeping their possessions up they are going to be difficult to keep up with.
