HOLIDAY 2013
Early Winter 2013 Look your best on New Year’s Eve Akari @ The Westin Winter Wonder Hands & Feet The benefits of Pilates HOLIDAY 2013 publisher’s letter inside Early Winter 2013 page nails: Winter wonder hands & feet 3 Hydrate, moisturize, routine The holidays and winter festivities are upon us, and they do come fast. Our annual open house, Casino Akari, promises to exceed expectations over previous years. Start by polishing your gambling skills, then choose your game and come prepared to win. Prizes include services, awards points, special deals on retail, and gift certificates. Feel free to invite a friend or two and receive extra rewards points. The evening will be a spectacular and fun way for us to say thank you. If you have not yet signed up for a group class or a private class with the experts at Pure Movement, your body is missing out. I had the opportunity to do both a Pilates and BarSculpt class and felt the effects for a few days. Another class that is taking off and is a favorite with the team is Carla’s ‘Booty’ class. Make sure you get introduced to one of the fitness instructors during your visit. Tara Cavanagh, aka Evelyn, our amazing massage therapist and model, is keeping herself busy with several new ventures. This November she will be a contestant for the Miss Maine title. In her spare time, she has been working with the Pure Movement team to get her into perfect shape. The entire Akari team is behind her, providing her with makeup, hair, skin and medispa services. Akari will also be sponsoring her gown. Tara and Lindsay (our head massage therapist) have collaborated and developed an Akari line of essential oils that we now use in our treatment rooms. The line is also for sale at the store. Tara/Evelyn, who was on the cover of our fall newsletter, will also be the manager at our second location opening this December at The Westin. We have remodeled the store, moved things around and brought in a few new lines. Our changing rooms have been relocated further back for privacy and comfort. We have built a new skin center where the changing rooms used to be. SkinMedica is one of the new lines we have added and hopefully we will have a few more in place by the end of the year, including a second makeup line. With change, comes change, and we have our share. We have some new faces around the building, especially at the front desk. We are aware that is a critical area as it is the first and last impression of the experience we provide. We are also in the process of introducing new software and faster phone response time. Dr. Jennifer Garvey has joined our medispa team. Dr. Garvey is an associate of our medispa director Dr. Jaccoma, and along with Dr. Spiros Lazos, will be available for fillers, lasers, Pelleve and other cosmetic services. We are also introducing a team of new nurses, Julie, Michelle, and Laura, in order to provide better coverage and availability with our cosmetic services. In conclusion we wish you a joyful, healthy season. We hope to see you break the Akari bank at our Casino Akari on December 4th, and may 2014 be an amazing year for all. Thank you for your loyalty. — Allan medispa: New personnel Welcome 4 new additions to the medispa massage: Akari scents Special blends created in-house color: Warm it up Winterize your color cut: Short hair is the trend Before and after haircut spa: Even out skin tone this winter 4 5 6 7 9 Lytera, a hydroquinone-free spot reducer pure movement: The benefits of Pilates 10 Get to class and get results 11 Akari@The Westin on the cover: How we got the look 12 feature: 14 Get ready for New Year’s Eve new products: 16 Now available at Akari feature: Perfect Hair Day, Pret-a-Powder, Bling Wipes, and scarves Credits Photography: Francois Gagne, Liz Donnelly, Tammy Walter Makeup and hair: Peter John Ulloa, Angela Creative director: Tracy Foss Design/Layout: Carolyn Cianchette Cover Model: Mercedes & Akari 195 Middle Street Portland, Maine 207.772.9060 Online: www.akaribeauty.com Facebook: Akari.wellness.beauty.style Twitter: @akaribeauty Email: info@akaribeauty.com 1 nails How to achieve winter wonder hands & feet! Cold temperature, low humidity from dry artificial heat, excessive hand-washing and overuse of hand sanitizers are all challenges to maintaining adequate moisture levels in our skin, the lack of which compromises our skin’s ability to repair itself, often leading to discomfort, chapping, and raw skin susceptible to infection. Akari is committed to our clients’ whole wellness experience, including beauty, comfort, and health. The Nail Department has compiled a few ideas to optimize at-home care that will complement our services so you can feel great between professional manicures and pedicures: • Always hydrate from the inside out. Sufficient water intake is crucial for our bodies’ systems to function properly, including hydration of the body’s largest organ, our skin. • Whenever possible, moisturize after every hand-washing!! Have a bottle at every home sink, bathroom and kitchen. At work, have a travel size tucked away in your purse. Invest in an emollient-rich bottle of Deborah Lippmann’s Rich Girl. Full-body moisturizing after showering is imperative at this time of year. Hot water can be harsh and drying, yet it is the optimal time for our open pores to absorb the nourishing vitamins, botanicals, and emollients in a great body cream. A staff favorite is Lierac’s Hydra-Body Lait. You will start the day knowing you’ve done something amazing for yourself while the invigorating and energizing scent can help get you going. Don’t forget to pay extra attention to elbows, knees, feet, and heels! • Develop a simple nightly routine of re-moisturizing feet before bed, as well as giving cuticles a moisture boost with some cuticle oil. Our favorites are Footlogixs Cracked Heel Formula for feet and CND’s Solar Oil for cuticles…so nourishing and easily absorbed! Keeping your products right on your night table will help facilitate establishing this good habit. For extra dry feet and cracked heels, think of coconut oil as a convenient home remedy. It is known to have antifungal and antibacterial properties as well as being a great moisturizer! Slather generously on feet and sleep in your socks once or twice a week for an intensive moisturizing treatment. Use cotton gloves for the same deep treatment for hands. To maintain the smooth heels achieved by an Akari pedicure, or to prepare feet to better absorb moisturizing treatments, using a professional foot file with a grit between 100 and 200, depending on your skin type, will provide the best results. Soak feet in warm water for at least five minutes to soften and use on towel-dried skin. Remember, the appropriate foot file, exfoliator, and moisturizers you use to care for your hands and feet are as important as a toothbrush for oral hygiene and sunscreen for proper skin care. Please feel welcomed and encouraged to speak with Carole, Julie or Mary anytime for product and technique recommendations. 2 3 medispa Welcome to our new personnel Dr. Jennifer Garvey Laura Reddington Jill Binford 4 Dr. Jennifer L. Laura Reddington, RN, Aesthetic Nurse Laura Reddington is a registered nurse with ten years of patient care experience. Laura earned bachelor’s degrees in both exercise physiology and nursing after attending both Northeastern University and University of Southern Maine. Growing up in the Boston-area, she chose Portland as her home and now resides in Cape Elizabeth with her family including three vibrant children. Aside from spending time with her family and friends, Laura enjoys cooking, cycling, music, literature and taking in the gorgeous Maine landscape, while surfing, paddle boarding and hiking. Wellness is both Laura’s personal and professional passion. Her philosophy is that beauty comes from the inside-out. “Looking and feeling your very best is both multi-faceted and holistic. Taking care of yourself includes eating healthfully, regular physical activity, sleep and relaxation, fulfillment in family, friends and career and taking the time to pamper yourself and celebrate life. I believe confidence is beauty and a smile is the most valuable accessory you can wear. We all age. Luckily, the growing medical aesthetic industry has afforded us with innovative skincare products and procedures that can slow down the aging process and enhance physical features.” “I am so excited to share my knowledge and skills of medical aesthetics, health and wellness to help all of our clients at Akari look and feel their most confident and beautiful best.” Jill Binford, RN, Aesthetic Nurse Jill Binford is a registered nurse who has relocated to her home state of Maine from California. While in California she was Director of Nursing at Aspen Surgery Center and then worked as a RNFA in an aesthetic institute that integrated medical and surgical dermatology, cosmetic and laser surgery, and aesthetic spa services. Jill also holds her Certification in Surgical Services Management and in Operating Room Nursing. Jill feels privileged to be here at the Akari medispa and is excited to be a part of the Akari team. massage Akari Scents We are very excited to announce our new spa line, Akari Scents! We have come up with our very own special blends that you can purchase here in our store. Akari Scents was created by our massage therapists and has grown from an idea into an entire line of massage oils, remedies, bath soaks, and room sprays. But it won’t stop there; soon we will be further expanding our line with body creams, cleansers and scrubs. After experimenting with different scents and remedies, we narrowed it down to a few that really inspired us and made a difference for us. We hope that they will for you too! Our Sweet Dreams blend is made for the restless non-sleepers out there to spray onto your linens and in your bedroom to help you relax and drift off to dreamland. The Breathe Deep blend is designed to help open your airways, cleanse your mind and sinuses. For best results rub oil onto your chest, on the sinus points of your face, and on your feet. Aches and Pains is a warming, pain-relieving blend. Gently massage into your muscles or put a few drops into your bath to melt away your aches and pains. Our Calming blend is rose-infused to bring bliss and enchantment to your hectic day. The Immune Boost tonic will give you the lift you need to help fight off infection and keep you in good health. Take the time to book in a massage and request one of our scents or check them out in the retail area to take home with you! — Lindsay and Evelyn Oils $16.00 Room Spray $14.00 Bath Soaks $14.00 5 color Warm hair color rules for winter Suddenly, it seems, fall has transitioned swiftly and decidedly into winter. Cooler, darker days are upon us. Holiday gatherings and parties are on the horizon. Our winter wardrobes are typically deeper-hued, with grounding shades of black, brown and grey being popular. Dense, textured fabrics like tweed and velvet as well as bold metallic jewelry in gold tones keep cold-weather practicality interesting. The same can be applied to changing hair color with the season. Pale, sun-bleached ends that complimented summer skin, and bright fall afternoons can begin to feel dull and tired in the winter. To “winterize” 6 your color, consider adding colors like gold, copper and chestnut to enliven faded color. Warm tones reflect more light, and make hair appear shinier and healthier, not to mention bringing fair winter skin back to life. Pale, foiled blondes can achieve this effect without having to give up their coveted light shade. Simply weaving pieces of golden honey-colored lowlights and keeping the pieces just around the face pale, for example, can be incredibly flattering. Also, if you have ever wondered if you could pull off being a redhead, start small by changing your color to include soft strawberry tones. For those not afraid of adding red into their color, this is a great time to transition. Colors with a red base span from subtle-like browns that lean toward auburn or mahogany to bonafide redhead shades of copper and russet. I am always surprised to hear how many believe they cannot have red hair. Nearly everyone can wear red, so long as the shade is properly selected considering skin-tone. Deeper shades are particularly beautiful this season. One of my favorite techniques for brunettes right now is layering several similar shades, for example, a chestnut base with deep espresso lowlights and a few hand-painted baliage highlights in front. Deepening the color of highlighted pieces from blonde to caramel would help this look blend even better for an interesting light (and eye)-catching result. Changing hair color, particularly switching from a cool tone to warm, often results in surprising changes elsewhere; you may discover certain colors of clothing look great with your new hair, and you may need to adjust your makeup. We are here to help with your color transformation. If winter’s chill is making you feel dull and washed out, the Akari color team would love to revive you! cut Shorter hair is trending this season Hair is definitely trending a bit shorter this season. I am seeing so many fantastic bobs and crops all over the runways. The models and celebrities all seem to be cutting. Why not us mere mortals? It’s a fantastic time of year for a change. I am loving the trend of taking long hair up to the collar bone. It is such a fresh take on length, and the line itself is seductively flattering. For clients that are a bit more “attached” to their hair, this can be a huge change that still allows them to feel connected to the comfort of having some length. 7 8 spa Even out your skin tone this winter SkinMedica is bringing a new option to the dermatological table when it comes to skin lightening. Lytera is a hydroquinone-free spot reducer. It is the perfect way to even out your skin tone while enhancing the overall condition of your skin and reducing spots of discoloration. Without irrita- tion, in just four weeks you can reveal a more luminous you, from forehead to décolleté. Because Lytera is a non-hydroquinone facial product, you can use it indefinitely with no adverse reactions, unlike hydroquinone products that suggest you take breaks between product usage. The added benefit of Lytera is that while you will see a marked improvement in spot reduction, your whole skin will have a healthy, radiant glow. In a season when our skin tends to be dry and dull, the benefits of a product that will light up our faces, while medically transforming at a deeper level, shouldn’t be overlooked. No two faces are the same, so schedule a consultation with our aestheticians to find out the best treatment plan for your skin. 9 pure movement Do you know who Pilates is named for? Method namesake Joseph H. Pilates was a visionary who truly believed that movement was the path to happiness. He wrote two health and exercise books highlighting his method, Contrology. His works are a fantastic resource for all exercise instructors and practitioners. Pilates practitioners have expanded his work, the foundation, to include new or modernized apparatus or techniques. Mr. Pilates wrote that health could be achieved through proper diet and exercise, good hygiene and sleeping habits, and plenty of sunshine and fresh air, while balancing work, recreation, and relaxation. As checklists go, this seems pretty ideal and probably, for most of us, extremely impractical. Some of us may have written a list very close to this yesterday, in our old school paper planners (yes, I still carry one, too). However, we all know how hard it is to do something seemingly simple like drink water or get enough sleep. So try to add Pilates to your daily routine. At first it will seem like you cannot make room for that extra hour in your day and you simply cannot figure out how to make your schedule commit to it. Trust me, if you find the correct exercise routine and an instructor that speaks your language for you and your mat, you will make time. I truly believe that WHAT you do on your mat is not as important as getting on your mat. Many prefer yoga, some like BUTI but I personally prefer BarSculpt, hands down, no contest. However, my love for BarSculpt has also allowed me to broaden my horizons and realize that mixing other modalities into my schedule is a good idea. Once a month I try something new. The easy truth is at the end of the day or week, as long as we move, we win. Another famous quote by Mr. Pilates is: “You will feel better in 10 sessions, look better in 20 session and have a completely new body in 30 sessions.” Now calm down. This does not mean that by doing Pilates once a week for the next 30 weeks you will automatically look like a super model. What it means is that regardless of your time frame, 30 sessions in 10 weeks or longer, you will feel the improvement first, see it next, and be able to experience it with your daily life movements improving fairly soon to starting. Even at once a week, this is just over a year progress. In the 14 years I have been teaching fitness (BarSculpt & Pilates) I have seen everything from diminished (or completely vanished) back pain to relief that seems so much simpler, the ability to sleep and move without pain. These clients range from professional dancers and athletes to cubicle workers, from early 20s to mid-80s. Starting is the key. Be kind to your progress and embrace the things that seem impossibly hard at first. The challenging exercises can comprise your list of achievable goals and before you know it you will be experiencing a whole new body! Mats and mirrors are not making any judgments on you. Get to class and in 10-20-30 get results! — Leslie 10 Leg Raises If you do not have a ballet barre, a kitchen counter, bar or friend would work. 1. Face away from the barre with hands gripping the bar behind you. 2. Lift one leg and slightly bend the supporting leg trying to maintain a neutral spine with your sits bones pointing directly at the floor. The best cue to keep a neutral pelvis and spinal alignment is to stick your butt out. Once the leg is lifted the excess weight in front of the body will pull the pelvis back to neutral. It would be VERY difficult for you to truly arch your back in this position. Think arch to achieve straight. Try to do 10 of each of the following: a. Lift in parallel b. Lift in lateral rotation c. Lift in medial rotation d. Circles (from the hip not the ankle) e. Bend and stretch 3. Repeat on the other leg @ The new Westin will house another location of Akari. Alan Labos describes his vision and the experience. What is your vision for the Akari salon at The Westin? My vision and that of The Westin is a luxury spa, medispa and full-service salon that will cater to Westin guests and groups attending functions like weddings and conventions. When will it open? Tentatively mid-December 2013. How will it impact current customers at 195 Middle Street? It won’t really affect our current customers as the services at The Westin are tailored and priced differently, although we hope our existing customers will participate in what we offer at the Westin for special occasions. Can current 195 Middle Street customers go to The Westin if they want to? Yes, current customers can go to this location if they’d like. We will have a new booking system in place that will be able to book your appointment at either of the two locations. Will his/her stylist be in both places or will there be a completely different staff? To start off we will be moving current staff around until we feel comfortable with demand. We will be closing the Middle Street location on Sundays in the future and moving our Sunday business to The Westin early in 2014. Are all services offered at The Westin that are offered at 195? No, services are tailored differently for out-of-town guest and events. But if a regular Akari customer happens to be scheduled at The Westin because their service provider of choice happens to be at The Westin that day, we will be ready to honor the usual service and price. I imagine this new salon has stateof-the-art equipment. Can you comment on that? All of the treatment rooms will have the latest in equipment, amazing Westinstyle bathrooms, showers and locker rooms, a relaxation lounge and a fitness center with a personal trainer. Can you describe the decor? This is the place to book when a group wants to get together and have an amazing experience with spa services. Guests can follow up their spa experience with cocktails at the Top Of The East lounge on the top floor of The Westin — the new hot spot in town. Describe the overall experience Luxury, high-end, private with in-room massages for guests. Ongoing we will be introducing cosmetic medicine, wellness, fitness and a few more surprises to be announced later! 11 How we got the he holiday season is the perfect opportunity to play around with fashion. Who doesn’t love a good excuse to dress up a bit? Although Portland has a more relaxed vibe than other urban centers, we still love to squeeze in a little glitz and glam. I think the perfect solution is the hi-low mix. This was the inspiration behind our shoot. When full-on sparkles, tiers and tufts may be too much, why not consider dressing down a full-length skirt with a t-shirt or a cool slouchy tuxedo jacket. Another direction is the always appropriate jeans and dressy top. When you keep the glam confined to one area of your outfit, it elevates the whole look to a level of cool-girl-who-isn’t-trying-too-hard. We wanted to show our hi-low mix with a slightly exaggerated beehive twist. Adding the vivid color is our way of really kicking it up a notch. By keeping the rest of the look slightly demure, this style of hair can really work. look All tees by Pete from $95 to $140 Sweater by Skin $198 Jean Jacket by Big Star $120 Skirts: Custom design for photo shoot by Tracy Photography: Francois Gagne Hair & makeup: Peter John and Angela Creative Director: Tracy 13 Get ready for Follow Jessica’s steps and mottos to look your best New Year ’s Eve and all year long! 3: Motto for weueilkd a house on sand st by NYE, You can’t b to look and feel your be tion. It combines leave-in conditioners, voluminizers, and finishing products into 1 product that also smooths, strengthens, and polishes. Winter is around the corner and your hair is already drying out. The air is dry, showers are hot, and the heat in our homes is starting to kick on. All of these things mean dry, damaged hair. PHD is revolutionary because you are getting much-needed moisture back into your hair without the weight that would drag your dos down. Blow-dries stay perky and full but strands are strengthened and given a much-needed moisturizing without fly-aways and static. Pret-a-Powder Bumble’s Pret-a-Powder is a translucent, dry shampoo and a style extender. If you’re looking to push the limits of your blowouts, to make it to day 3 with volume and texture, this is your go-to product. Sprinkle this powder through your roots and work it in for instant volume without too much grit or stick. Oily roots vanish leaving behind a tousled, soft, revamped do. Try it with your ponytails and get a more high-fashioned style or work it roots to ends and add a braid for a pillowy plait. If you find hair powder spray too gritty or too pigmented, this is a great change. Pret-a-Powder has no color and very light texture, just enough to lift you up and soak up your oil, but not enough to make hair untouchable or stiff. It is very user-friendly, though less is more. It’s for all hair types, fine to full. Bling Wipes . The perfect gift for the girl who just got engaged! Finally, an easy way to clean your bling on-the-go! Keep your baubles brilliant with the quick swipe of a Bling Wipe. Each Bling Wipe is individually packaged for convenient cleaning anytime, anywhere.
