Bathing suits have never felt better! Summer should be spent in the sun and sand, not shaving in the shower! Do you struggle with embarrassing body hair? Red irritated skin or breakouts from waxing? Constantly fighting stubble, in grown hairs or just razor nicks? Laser Hair Removal (LHR) may be for you! During the summer months self maintenance is a losing battle. Time is everything and for most of us, we don’t have it! Let this be your last summer of frustration- you’re planning this summer can save you time and energy next summer! “I was fed up with just about everything, trust me, I have tried it all. I finally decided to get laser hair removal. It has been a great decision for me. I was already a client at Akari and they made my experience wonderful!” - Client E Here at Akari we offer top of the line service in our very own medical spa. With our Candella Gental Lase lasers and our staff of certified, medically trained field professionals we have the ability to make you as comfortable as possible during your treatment. Our spa- like atmosphere affords us the time and dedication, as well as the attention to detail for each and every one of our clients. “I would spend all this time shaving only to have red razor bumps, ingrown hairs and then stubble in less than three days. I started waxing and enjoyed the results for a week or two at most, then spent the next two weeks growing out my hair to wax again.” - Client J One major benefit of LHR is that you don’t have to let the hair grow out between treatments, shaving is allowed and between every treatment you will notice the hair grows back slower, finer, and in some spots- not at all! It’s possible that in as little as 6 treatments you could be hair free with virtually no down time! With a pulse of heat and light our lasers will destroy each individual hair follicle, essentially vaporizing it. Confidence comes from feeling comfortable in your own skin on the cover How we got Our team’s inspiration for our latest photoshoot Photographer: Francois Gagne Art Director: Tracy Foss Stylists: Peter John Ullo, Angela Mancini Makeup Artists: Genevieve Drzewianowski, Rachel Helm Set design: Mercedes Foss Model: Delaney Patten Harris Tunic by Chalet $58, Necklace by Top Shelf $68. Mesh Baseball Jacket by Katherine Barclay $108, Tee by Skin $54, Jeans by Big Star $98. Tunic by Ronen Chen $65, Necklace by Top Shelf $68 Dress by Chalet $102, Belt by Kim White $145, Necklace by Top Shelf $68 Art Dirction: Tracy just loved the idea of puppets for both the Akari windows and this photo shoot. “I felt that the strings that enable puppets to move would also provide interesting movement and poses for our clothes and an interesting story line for a photoshoot! I wanted our set bright and vibrant so as not to give a dark creapy feeling that sometime accompanies the subject of puppets and dolls”. Mercedes totally accomplished this vibrance with the colors she chose for the backdrop and how she used them by mixing up our traditional ideas of grass and trees! Stylist: Peter John was inspired by Japaness/geisha dolls’ porcelain skin and big curley hair. He accoplished the “big curls” by using Prep by Bumble and Bumble, $38, and added in extra hair wifs. Angela’s perspective was a little different and based on softness. She was inspired by the June issue of Vogue where model Kate Upton had a very soft wind blown bob with a polished finish. Make up Artists: Rachel and Genevieve were inspired by the old porcelain dolls they used to have as a little girls. The dolls always had big eyes with long lashes that open and shut if you picked them up. The “skin” of the dolls was obviously smooth but there was something warm about it. They achieved this look by using BB Creme from Jane Iredale, $50. It covers flawlessly and leaves the skin dewy and clean looking with a very youthful sort of glow. We used big fake lashes to give the large doll-eyed look with a strong brow so it looked almost painted on. Rachel was also inspired by fairy tales, like Hansel and Gretel. “I imagined our models had just walked out of the forest, having eaten some summer berries and we got that look by using a rich burgundy on the inner part of the mouth and fading it outward.” the look Jennfier Aniston is living proof of her new product line. Akari’s Jeffrey Blais and Genevieve Drzewianowski rub elbows with her at the Living Proof gala. Living Pro oof y Genevieve Drzewianowski Jeffrey Blais ou’ve probably been hearing a fair amount of hype around Jennifer Aniston’s new line, Living Proof, and Akari is very excited to be offering it. As always, we are invested in every product line that we bring to our clients and want to make sure we arm each and every one with the knowledge to make the most of their take-home regimen. That commitment gave two of our staff members the pleasure of attending a Living Proof gala in New York in May. Genevieve Drzewianowski and Jeffrey Blais learned about the line’s scientific history and hobnobbed with the co-owner and hairstyle icon, Jennifer Aniston. To those who haven’t yet heard about Living Proof, it’s always good to start at the beginning. The line was born at MIT where scientists develop two new molecules and begin to contemplate the real world applications. The first molecule, nicknamed OFPMA (Octafluoropentyl Methacrylate), had a tremendous cumulative effect, meaning that the longer the product was used the healthier, stronger and smoother the hair became. It was also hydrophobic (water resistant) so humidity was effectively stopped in its tracks — no more frizz! The molecule also repelled dirt and oils which meant that blowdries lasted longer and stayed smoother, thus silicones, oils and parabens were no longer necessary. The second molecule is PBAE (Polyalkylaminoester-1), a tiny molecule that created a huge difference in styling. Each PBAE molecule attaches to the hair to create space and friction between strands giving the hair natural, full, soft hair without flakes or dryness. “Thin, limp hair will feel full and dense and the best part is that they can be reactivated,” Jeffrey said. “As the day wears on, if you feel a little flat, just run your hands through your hair and give your roots a little push and voila! Full hair returns.” “While other brands make promises and use the same cocktail of ingredients as other lines, Living Proof believes you only have to try it to see and feel the difference,” Genevieve added. “And our team at Akari has seen the difference.” Shannon Shannon moss The former WMTW News8 anchor shares her career history and her life-long battle with her hair w hile roosters are deep in a REM sleep cycle, that’s when most morning news anchors wake up. A 2:30AM alarm, screaming at me, always made me think...I need a new job. Well, if you’ve been following the news lately, you know that’s my new reality. This sudden life change brings with it many things; sadness, gratitude for the tremendous amount of support I’ve received, excitement for what’s to come and relief. Yes relief. I can now focus on reversing 6 years of sleep deprivation and I no longer have to worry about my hair, at least as far as job security goes. If you haven’t been in Maine for the last five years you might not know that my naturally curly hair has been one of the most controversial issues in Maine television. No, I’m serious. To prove it, I would be happy to share my boxes of hate mail/email or you can simply ask Akari owner Allan Labos or Head Colorist Jeffery Blais, as the two of them have spent more than a decade trudging through the quagmire, better known as Curlygate! For a little history, I was born with the curlyfrizzyfuzzyfine hair gene. Obviously not its scientific name, but nonetheless has tormented me throughout most of my life. The hair stories are endless. Some are funny, like the time a bee got stuck in it, I believe looking to nest, and others are just plain unfortunate, like the time a hairdresser cut my wet bangs, not realizing when they dried they’d shrink to my hairline. Keep in mind I was born in the 70’s, so hair products and styling tools were in their infancy. The cutting edge products of the day, were Dippity Do hair gel, Hot Rollers and Hood Dryers. While my hair was always a source of frustration for me personally, I never realized the impact it would have on me professionally. In 1992, as a college senior, excited to graduate and find my first job in TV news, my journalism professor had these parting words for me. “Shannon, I have no doubt you’ll do great in this business, but the one problem you’ll have is your hair.” That comment proved to be the understatement of my life. I tried to conform. I cut my long curls, set them daily with large rollers, and prayed to the anchor bob Gods, but little good it did without a climate controlled environment. Starting my career as a reporter, any damp, foggy, rainy, hot or humid weather was a nightmare, making my “straightened” hair While my hair was always a source of frustration for me personally, I never realized the impact it would have on me professionally. worse than if I had just worn it curly in the first place. Needless to say, I avoided applying for any jobs south of the Mason Dixon line. When I got to Maine in 1999, my poor processed-pulled-every-which-way tresses were exhausted and started to fall out. I told my News Director at the time, he was going to have a curly haired anchor/reporter or a bald one. After much consideration and “test shots” they reluctantly agreed to the curls. The management was supportive, although unhappy with viewer feedback. They were inundated with calls and letters, and over the years the research backed it up. Statistics showed while I was a well-known public figure in Maine, a large majority of people didn’t like me, because of my hair. Silly huh? But it’s not all bad news, I also had a lot of supporters, people who loved the curls and those who could look past them. The hair complaints stopped five years ago, funny enough the same time I decided to stop wearing it curly. My natural hair was changing, so it was easier to straighten it, fortunately this time with the help of a large round brush, hair dryer, flat iron, Keratin treatments and under the care of my hair hero, Jeffery Blais. Jeffery has been with me through curls, color treatments, long and short hair and the possibility of no hair. And what keeps me coming back, besides his talent and the rest of the staff’s expertise is what’s not on Akari’s list of services: substance, loyalty and unwavering support. No matter how you wear your hair, that’s something everyone can use. RACK} } OFF THE New arrivals to Akari’s boutique! Smythe les Vestes!
