However, a few simple tips will help you accomplish that goal. • If you are not participating in a wine trail event, remember, Ohio law precludes giving away wine, so be prepared to pay a small amount for each sample you taste. • Do NOT wear heavy perfumes or colognes – and do not chew gum. All will interfere with your tasting experience. • If you don’t enjoy a variety, simply dump it out. • Remember – safety first. Consume responsibly – no more than a couple of ounces of wine per hour – and make sure you enjoy some food as you sample, OR, better yet, appoint a designated driver to make sure everyone who tastes has fun and returns home safely. Once you begin your actual tasting: • Start with the driest wine you think you will enjoy and progress through dry to sweet, whites before reds. • Follow four basic tasting steps: • Appearance: tip your glass and look at the wine. Is the color brilliant, intense, clear? • Aroma: swirl the wine to release the aromas. Is it fresh, fruity, complex, grapey? • Taste: take a small sip and roll it around in your mouth. Is it sweet, dry, light, full bodied? • Finish: What is the overall impression after the wine is swallowed. Is it pleasant, well balanced, memorable, short lived or long lasting? This Canal Country Wine Trail Brochure is part of a series of wine trail brochures highlighting each of the six designated Wine Trails in Ohio.
