Sampson was a strongman who let himself be led astray by a jezebel like Delilah. Sampson slayed the Philistines with the axe of the Apostles. Moses led the Jews to the Red Sea where they made unleavened bread, which is bread without any of the ingredients. The Egyptians were all drowned in the dessert. Afterwards, Moses went up to Mount Cyanide to get the Ten Commandments. The first Commandments was when Eve told Adam to eat the apple. Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His Borromeo Family! A Holy Community through Holy Communion. Your Brother in Jesus, 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time , August 21, 2016 WATER FILTERS FOR GUATEMALA Special Guest Fr. Dan Vogt to speak here this weekend Did you know that over 90% of water sources in Guatemala are contaminated? Did you know that the most common cause of intestinal illness and malnutrition is drinking unclean water? Did you know that Guatemala has the second worst child death rate in the Americas? Did you know that the most common cause of child death is dehydration due to diarrhea? DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU CAN HELP SAVE CHILDREN’S LIVES IN GUATEMALA? For the last few years, Father Daniel Vogt, a Borromeo native, has visited our parish asking for support for his water filter project. He returns this weekend of August 20 and 21 to thank those who have supported this important work as well as to invite Borromeo parishioners to help him through donations to Qeqchi Partners, the non-profit organization that funds this ministry. Using a non-chemical technology developed in Canada, Qeqchi Partners has installed hundreds of water filters in rural households. Qeqchi Partners does not usually give away the filters, but rather offers them at far less than cost to families that often live on $200 a month or less. For your $100 donation to Qeqchi Partners you can provide a reliable source of drinking water to a rural family as well as preventive health education for them. Attention Boys & Girls Grades 3-8! Children’s Memorial Mass– Thursday, September 15, 2016 –7 p.m. Please join us on the evening of Thursday, September 15, the Feast of the Sorrowful Mother, for the annual Children’s Memorial Mass to offer spiritual support for all families who are suffering from the loss of a child of any age. We will begin by saying the 7 Sorrows of Mary Rosary Prayer at 6:30 p.m. in church by the Pieta statue. If you received a 7 Sorrows of Mary rosary last year, please bring it that evening. Before Mass, families who have lost a child to miscarriage, still birth, abortion, as well as younger and older children who have passed away due to accident, illness or any cause are welcome to remember their loved ones by inscribing their child’s name in the Children’s Memorial Book of Life and lighting a candle. The Memorial Mass will begin at 7:00 p.m. and fellowship will follow the Mass in the Café. If you have any questions, please call Pat Brown at 636-734-5930 and Barb Bott at 636-947-3939. Order for Naming and Commendation of an Infant Who Died Before Birth The Order for Naming and Commendation of an Infant Who Died Before Birth seeks to set the death of an infant within the context of our faith, and to unite the grieving parents and family members to the merciful God, whose love was revealed to us in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This rite is primarily used for miscarriages when the baptism of an infant was neither possible nor permitted, and when it is not possible or desirable to celebrate the funeral liturgy or rite of committal. The Order for Naming and Commendation of an Infant who Died Before Birth may be performed at any time, not matter how much time has passed since the miscarriage. Please contact one of the priests or deacons if you are interested in this rite, or contact Ann Tollefson at 636-928-2970 if you have any questions. 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time , August 21, 2016 Readings of the Week Monday: 2 Thes 1:1-5, 11-12; Ps 96:1-5; Mt 23:13-22 Tuesday: 2 Thes 2:1-3a, 14-17; Ps 96:10-13; Mt 23:23-26 Wednesday: Rv 21:9b-14; Ps 145:10-13, 17-18; Jn 1:45-51 Thursday: 1 Cor 1:1-9; Ps 145:2-7; Mt 24:42-51 Friday: 1 Cor 1:17-25; Ps 33:1-2, 4-5, 10-11; Mt 25:1-13 Saturday: 1 Cor 1:26-31; Ps 33:12-13, 18-21; Mt 25:14-30 Sunday: Sir 3:17-18, 20, 28-29; Ps 68:4-7, 10-11; Heb 12:18-19, 22-24a; Lk 14:1, 7-14 Gospel ReflectionIn a family so much love is lavished on the newborn first child and you hear them saying – that’s the end of freedom now for a good few years. Or the grandchildren come and there’s the babysitting. Life deepens and narrows. It is the narrow gate of love, the wide world of generosity. Jesus says elsewhere that love is the door to eternal life, laying down life for a friend; the cross was a narrow door. Real Love Real love means little things a lot of the time, and with God it means time now and then to pray and to worship, as well as loving the neighbor. Love may narrow our lives, and also deepens it. We can find a lot of variety in life today but not enough depth. We can look for wide doors which lead to narrow gardens, unlike the narrow door of Jesus which leads to an eternal garden. Love demands a lot as well as gives a lot. With the people we most love we are most vulnerable and they can bring the worst and the best out of us. World of Love The condition for entering is not where you come from, whether you are first or last, whether you wear the right clothes or even turn up on time – the condition is that in the way of living God you hear the word of God daily and live by it faithfully. Large employers across the river such as McDonnell Aircraft and automobile manufacturers, GM and Ford, beckoned and many local people began to commute via the Highway 115 Bridge. When Interstate 70 linked St. Charles with the expressways of St. Louis, the town became attractive to people seeking inexpensive housing and a pace slower than that of St. Louis. In 1950, the city included 14,314 residents within its limits. Ten years later the population nearly hit 24,000. Many of these new inhabitants joined St. Charles Borromeo and sent their children to the parish school. The School Sisters of Notre Dame took advantage of new technologies for the classroom. In January of 1951, they bought a new Bell and Howell movie projector. They helped pay for it with proceeds from a magazine drive and a seed sale. In the spring, the school raised more money by showing benefit movies such as W.C. Fields’ Hurry, Hurry, Abbott and Costello’s Oysters and Muscles along with Andy Panda and Woody Woodpecker cartoons. During the 1953-1954 school year, many school parents contributed toward the purchase of the school’s first television set. However, the TV spent little time educating students. The school newspaper explains, “Because Channel 9 did not come in, and because it is too dangerous to keep the set in school during the summer months, some strong PTA men brought it to the convent where it is stored in the recreation room.” Later entries fail to mention whether the set returned to the school in the fall. By 1957, six Sisters and five laywomen taught 556 children. With the first wave of “baby boomers” straining the capacity of Borromeo School, their older brothers and sisters still attended classes in the rickety and unsafe St. Peter’s High School. The high school building stood to the west of St. Peter’s Church. Constructed in 1900, by the early 50s it was dangerously crowded and a potential firetrap. Borromeo’s Pastor Fr. James Fallon SJ and St. Peter’s Monsignor Anthony Strauss discussed building a regional Catholic high school on a fourteen-acre plot of farmland in the Prairie Haute common field west of town. The Boschert family, owners of the land, agreed to sell for $30,000. The priests took the matter to the archdiocese, and soon had a loan for the entire sum plus the permission of Archbishop Joseph Ritter to build a high school for no more than $750,000. Archbishop Ritter broke ground for the new, “Inter-Parish High School” on May 28, 1955. Work progressed through the summer and in December Fr. Fallon and Monsignor Strauss laid the corner stone into which they cut the school’s name, Blessed Philippine Duchesne High School. On June 24, 1956, the two parishes held an open house on the nearly completed structure, which housed twelve classrooms, a chapel, gymnasium, cafeteria, and kitchen along with several offices. The new school opened its doors on September 4, 1956, to 356 students. …courtesy of St. Charles Borromeo: 200 Years of Faith, by Jo Ann Brown. This book is available in the church office for $5.00 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time , August 21, 2016 El Camino de St. Charles Borromeo 1950 *** 1957 Durante la década de 1950, St. Charles lentamente fue perdiendo su identidad de pueblo pequeño.
