I cleaned the dog department on Wednesdays during dog adoption events. It didn’t take long to realize the need for fosters. So I filled out a foster application and started my new love affair: fostering puppies. At that time, I had one adult dog Lefty, a dog my sister rescued from a dumpster as a pup. He was like a grandpa to the pups I fostered. They’d live with me and get potty trained, socialized and crate trained for their future homes. Spring 2007 I received a call from my mom. Her friends found a loose dog roaming around their condo community. So off I went to pick him up. That’s when I met a young Australian Shepherd. I named him Romeo… a fitting name for such a handsome boy. Romeo initially stayed at the shelter, was adopted but returned Pet Refuge Report: Spring 2016 Pet Memorials ..................................9 after one day. So I decided to foster him and I’m so glad I did. He was great with the puppies and he loved herding them around. I decided to become a “foster failure,” and adopt Romeo. He was also very well behaved around my son, born in 2008. Romeo was a wonderful companion to my son and me for several years. Sadly, we lost him just before Christmas 2015, to stomach cancer. I knew our home wouldn’t feel complete without a dog. So just after Christmas, I decided to see if Pet Refuge had any large breed puppies. I saw the “Star Wars” litter on their website; but they were no longer accepting applications. As I pulled into the parking lot, there was Mary Ann, with her foster, Chewy…A STAR WARS PUPPY! As luck would have it, the applicants changed their minds and continued on page 2 } visit our website at www.petrefuge.com In Honor of ......................................10 Pet Refuge Information: Thanks to You..................................10 Support Pet Refuge.......................11 Wishin’ & Hopin’ .............................11 Upcoming Events...........................12 4626 S. Pet Refuge is run by volunteers for the placement of unwanted and abandoned pets into responsible permanent homes. www.petrefuge.com Pg. 1 Adorable Adoptables These are loveable animals, looking for their fur-ever homes Gracie & Mitchell Even though Gracie and Mitchell are not biologically related, they are the best of friends and have spent their entire lives together. We are hoping to keep these two friends together and are looking for a family that would like to adopt a pair. Patch Patch is one of the happiest dogs that you will ever meet! She is a fun, energetic and playful 2-year-old Terrier mix who can jump 3 feet in the air when she is excited. Patch has never met a stranger and is quickly becoming a favorite. Fosters and Fur Kids continued From pg. 1 he was available for adoption! I filled out an adoption application right away. Chewy was exactly what I was looking for, and I wanted to surprise my son with a puppy. I took Jake to Pet Refuge that following week. The volunteers made it extra special by putting a bow on Chewy and making a sign, “Jake take me home.” He gladly obliged. Chewy has some pretty big shoes to fill, but he’s well on his way, with his big feet. His presence is helping us cope with the loss of Romeo…and his timing was impeccable! Jake has said to me several times, “Mom, thank you for letting me adopt my own puppy!” ABC Clinic Makes a Major Milestone URGENT Dog Cleaners Needed! They need your care! Must be over 18. Please call Pet Refuge for more information. (574) 231-1122 Pg. 2 In June of 2011 we opened the ABC Clinic in Granger Indiana (since moved to our current location). As of December 2015 the staff at the ABC Clinic has performed 39,571 surgeries. In 2015 they averaged just over 900 surgeries a month. Thanks to this dedicated team the Pet Refuge ABC Clinic is doing its part to reduce pet overpopulation. We thank everyone for supporting our efforts and encourage you all to continue to spread the word about low cost spay neuter services. Socialization and proper manners are important for pets going to their forever home. Interaction with our animals will help train them for the next stage of their life. RECEIVE unconditional love from an animal you’ve comforted, petted, or walked. Slobbery licks and snuggles improve your mood and relieve stress! EXERCISE while enjoying the company of a shelter animal. You’ll quickly feel the physical, emotional, and mental benefits. FRIENDSHIPS with our volunteers are the best! Meet other animallovers who share your compassion and interests. BOOST your résumé and selfesteem. You’ll learn new skills as you volunteer that can apply on the job. MEET your next furry companion! There’s no better way to get to know great local cats and dogs and find your next member of the family. As a volunteer on the dog side, I can say that although there is Cat Volunteers some work involved each week, it doesn’t feel like work, when you are your longtime residents is finally enjoying what you do with the dogs getting their forever home, and we stop in to say goodbye to “our” and fellow volunteers. Not only did he collect food and other items on our wish list, he also brought in cash donations of $220. This was not a birthday request, it was a just because request. He is from Dowagiac, MI and wanted to do something for the animals. He even sent a letter to his friends and family to gather these donations. He is a very interesting young man who hopes to someday become a vet. Candy Swathwood organized a donation drive for us at her work this holiday season! The dogs, cats and volunteers say THANK YOU Candy! Debbie Jaquay took Bruce to Grissom Middle School for their Business class as part of a presentation on non-profit organizations. Over $300 was raised. That covers our food for our animals for a half of month. Cindy Schmidt collected the most donations and won the Chiphone Federal Credit Union "Ugly Sweater" Contest. The employees paid to wear jeans to work on designated days and that money was added to what was collected for Pet Refuge. She is shown here presenting a check for $681 to a volunteer of Pet Refuge, Dawn Braniff, Cat Foster Coordinator. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I definitely didn't expect it to be professional models from Chicago, Indy, and Cincinnati! The magazines are putting this in their Embrace and Omega magazines. They are having a fashion show on May 28th, but they don't have a venue yet. The proceeds will benefit Pet Refuge. There was also talk about the designers providing the clothing, and they are some big names. They will also be looking into doing a casting call for the models to compete to see who gets to walk in it. Our cats and dogs did wonderfully. There were many compliments about our shelter, and the models loved the opportunity to learn about us and pose with our animals. Remembering Howard the Cat. Tracie Davis Pet Refuge volunteers were hit with many losses in the final months of 2015 and, for me, Howard’s passing was the hardest. I’m drawn to the cats that require a little extra patience and effort to appreciate and Howard’s spraying put him in that category. He was the naughtiest of the naughty. A skinny black cat that sprayed everything and everybody. He was unadoptable because of his spraying and all the cat volunteers knew that, but Howard worked his way into the hearts of even those he sprayed (including me – I viewed it as a sign that he wanted his cat roommates to know he considered me his property). Pet Refuge Report: Spring 2016 When Linda Geyer sent an email saying that Howard was in decline, I made a point to take him to a visitation room for a last goodbye. He liked cuddling more since his health began failing and I was able to hold him and tell him how much I’d miss him. The next email Linda sent was to prepare us for Howard’s trip across the rainbow bridge. Many hearts were broken when he was gone. Howard received as much love and affection as even the sweetest, best-behaved cat or dog at the shelter. Because that’s what Pet Refuge volunteers do: treat every animal that comes our way as a precious, cherished pet and hope we can help them find the homes they deserve, even if that furever home will always be our shelter. visit our website at www.petrefuge.com Pg. 7 Remembering Our Loved Ones (As received in our office as of January 29th, 2016)} Bill Asherman from Bob & Deb Martin, Les & Debbie James, Liz Alflen, Terence & Lillie Goralski, Todd & Peggy Schmeltz, Carol Arnett, Loren & Julie Roth, Joyce Pinkerton, Rod & Sharon Anders, Matt Uselton Rita Borntrager from Lisa Dobson Harry Breske from Harold & Julie Hall, Richard & Ann Watson Hale Burgess from Craig & Jan Seder Tom Campbell from Louis Somogyi, Carl & Jane Littrell, Terry & Anne Smith Geraldine “Sherry” Chrzanowski from Jean Chrzanowski, The Lang Family, Deborah Visintainer Leon Ciesielski from Emma Ciesielski, Monica Robinson Lois Claeys from Nora Radtke, Dawn Metzer, Lafayette Group, Inc., Mr. & Mrs. Michael Maeyens, Martha & William Ayres, Donald & Beverly Quimby, Sally Dunn, Dolores Orosz, Jim, Janet & Mary Weisel, Chris & Ron Nisley, Carol Sumpter, Barry & Rebecca Wertz Margaret Conner from Bob & Sandra Matuszak, David & Rachelle Mihako & Family, Pam, Ryan & Connor Matuszak Hruskovich Karl Daniels from Kathleen VanLue, Jami Kosek Kathy Drudge from Larry Cripe, Bill & Connie Michalski, Marvin & Beth Hills, Lori Miltroka, Ed & Betty Spychalski, Barb Busch, Lonnie & Connie Blucker, Mike & Kathy Keagle, Greg & Jackie Lakner, Mr. & Mrs. Jeff Denney, Jim & Luanne Cripe, Larry & Donna Oakley, Polly & Reggie Stickel, Robert Richman, Wayne & Angela Pg. 8 In Loving Memory… Snider, Sandra Vanslager-Zane, Nancy & Ron Wiggins Frances “Muncie” Ehardt from Kay Luchansky, Telecom Pioneers, James & Diana Pesci, Nancy Lee, Ken Fawcett, William & Rachel Paul, Frank & Carol Davis, Gary Dominy Ryan Ewing from First English Evangelical Lutheran Church Tom Ginter from Paul & Karen Niezgodski, Cindy & Marv Moore, Eric Moore, Molly Hannon, Frank & Joanne Gorny, Mindy & Jeffrey Steele, Mark & Sue Ann Warner Lenny Genchoff from Mary & Clark Hensell, South Bend Airport Authority, Ann Knapik, Evelyn Meller, Jane Kelly Roy Gramenz from Elinor Tyl Sharon Gumz from James Condon Mike Happer from Betty Fluck, Laddie Majorie Haase from Bethany & James Kennedy, Carman Industries Lois Hasinfelt from Industrial Finishes & Systems Dennis Heckman from Diane & James Bernath Dave Henry from Cheri Brown, John Monczunski Elizabeth Johnson from Jay Johnson Orville “Jay” Kling Jr. from Sharon & Ronald Horvath, The Beesons.
