Timmy Foundation - Timmy Global Health
The Timmy Foundation 2007 Annual Report The Timmy Foundation was founded in 1997 to channel resources to sustainable health and education projects in developing countries. The Timmy Foundation: A Network for Global Change…A Real and Lasting Impact Last year, the Foundation partnered with eight dynamic organizations in seven countries, sending medical brigades to five, and financial support to all seven. Letter from Dr. Chuck Dietzen Our Vision A world in which basic healthcare and education are available to all people. Our Mission The Timmy Foundation builds healthy futures worldwide, one person at a time. We accomplish our mission by strengthening community-based health and education initiatives, providing them with needed funding, supplies, equipment, and expertise. We empower youth to serve by utilizing their talent and energy for our humanitarian efforts. Our High School and College Chapters work year round to advocate, fundraise, and serve. We managed to have an even lower overhead than we had in the past! Having gone through a recent audit, we discovered that our overhead is approximately 3%, as we have managed to send out $5.2 million worth of medical supplies, equipment and medications to our partners. We continue to get the “most bang for the buck”, as indicated by the accountants who did our review. When you see such great things happening from such a small organization, people would often ask the question “who gets the credit”? I would suggest that we live in a culture that tends to promote the seeking of the limelight. If they were to ask me, or any of you Timmys, I think we would all agree that the credit is due to the people we serve. The children that we have encountered in this country and abroad who are in need have the greatest mission on this planet, that being to keep us more humane, more compassionate, more giving and more understanding. I have often told people that the greatest gift I can give them is access to the kids. I greatly appreciate what these children have done for me, allowing me into their world and enhancing my life, hopefully as much as we have changed theirs. But, I also believe that all of you deserve credit as well. This Foundation would not be able to provide the assistance, the caring and the compassionate relief that we are able to give without your prayers, your energy, your expertise and your donations. This is one of those occasions where I am thankful to God not only for the life I have been given, but also for the people that surround me. It is an inspiration to get to work with these children, but it is also a great blessing to be working side by side with you in an effort to accomplish that mission. We genuinely believe that all of you have gifts to share and we grealy appreciate that you share those through the support of our work. We love you, we appreciate you, and we look forward to continuing to serve the underserved alongside you. Thank you, once again, for being who you are. Chuck Dietzen Dr. Chuck Dietzen The Timmy Foundation, President and Founder Medical Programs Update The Timmy Foundation works to provide direct medical care… Bringing the clinic to the community For so many in the developing world, poverty and poor infrastructure make even the most basic medical care inaccessible. This past year, the Timmy Foundation’s 12 medical teams, including 88 volunteer medical professionals, provided primary care to over 5500 patients, from newborns to seniors, in underserved communities in Ecuador, Guatemala, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic. Providing much needed meds Despite being standard in medicine cabinets across the United States, even common meds such as Aspirin, Tylenol, and Benadryl are unaffordable to most of our patients. …and make a long term impact. The Foundation supplements its work in the field with assistance to our international partner organizations. This enables our partner organizations to provide care all year round. Working Toward Sustainability With only $46,000, the Timmy Foundation financed the construction of the Pediatric and Neonatology wing of Un Canto a la Vida, Tierra Nueva’s new hospital in Southern Quito. This hospital will serve some 700,000 underserved people. This year, the Timmy Foundation has pledged to raise an additional $82,000 to finance the construction of a post-partum ward and an intensive care unit at the hospital, as well as $10,000 to staff the Pop-Wuj Clinic in Xela, Guatemala six days per week. Last year, the Timmy Foundation distributed an estimated 5 tons - approximately $1 million worth - of over-the-counter and prescription medicines in the communities we serve. Some prescription meds, such as those used to treat high blood pressure or diabetes, can even be life saving. In the communities we serve, the Timmy Foundation is often the sole provider of these meds, which is why we always bring enough to last until the next team arrives. Ensuring Continuity of Care To increase our impact and enable us to provide better care to our patients, the Timmy Foundation decided to formally adopt 4 communities in Ecuador and 3 communities in Guatemala. Because we return to visit these same communities on a regular basis, this allows us to create a patient tracking system, and follow up with patients found to have critical conditions or chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, and track the progress of our medical programs. In Ecuador, an additional $2,000 is provided each month to cover the cost of follow-up care for our patients. This can include anything from additional testing to life-saving surgery. Making Medical Care More Accessible In 2008, the Timmy Foundation and its supporters raised $25,000 for an ambulance for Crossroads Ministries, in the Dominican Republic. The ambulance will allow Crossroads staff to follow up with patients and transport those in need of additional care to the nearest hospital. In Ecuador, the Foundation has long been very proud of our referral system – a system by which patients found to have serious conditions that need attention beyond the capacity our medical teams, can be referred to Tierra Nueva for follow-up care all subsidized by the Foundation. However, in July 2007 it was estimated that fewer than 20% of patients receiving these referrals – some with life-threatening illnesses – actually followed up at the Hospital. This was primarily due to a lack of transportation. In response to this, in October of 2007, the Foundation piloted a new transportation initiative, through which we send a bus back to each community the week following our medical brigades to ensure that patients have safe, reliable, and free transportation to and from the Hospital. As a direct result of the bussing initiative we saw the percentage of people following up at the Hospital jump dramatically from 20% in July 2007 to over 80% in March 2007. Providing Essential Equipment In May 2008, Doña Ana, a midwife and community leader in Guatemala, was presented with a baby scale and incubator when The Timmy Foundation visited her community. The incubator is only the third in the region. Additionally, our Indianapolis-based partner, the TriMedx Foundation, will be outfitting Un Canto a la Vida Hospital with essential medical equipment and providing critical maintenance and training assistance. College and High School Outreach Empowering future leaders and creating globally conscious young citizens. This year, students from 9 College Chapters and 4 High School Chapters committed to advocate, fundraise, and serve with the Foundation. Together these students provided support to 10 medical teams and raised over $80,000 for projects in Ecuador, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic. These are the students that the Timmy Foundation hopes will go on to become tomorrow’s doctors, pharmacists, public health workers, engineers, social workers, humanitarians, and leaders. Education Programs Updates Good Works Continue at Poder Joven Progress Continues at Bebor Schools This year, Poder Joven continued to provide a range of service to some 130 children in the Casa Karah and Casa Maren programs. Through after school programs that includes basic medical care, dental care, psychological counseling, homework help, esteem-building activities, and two daily meals, Poder Joven provides these children with a safe alternative to the streets. This year a total of $12,100 was channeled our International Partner in Nigeria. Of these funds, $7,000 went toward the construction of the final classroom buildings in Bodo and Bane; $2,000 provided tuition scholarships to pupils; and $3,100 went toward Bebor’s partner organization, Stepping Stones Nigeria, which is engaged in a similar primary school building project in the neighboring Akwa Ibom State. In 2007, Poder Joven also continued developing programs that would help it become more financially self-sufficient as a nonprofit. The recycling center has been hugely successful generating almost $20,000 toward Poder Joven’s administrative expenses, in addition to saving approximately 520 trees, recycling of 173,376 tons of metals and saving 208,051 tons raw materials. In the upcoming year, Poder Joven will be working toward setting up a shop for repair and maintenance of motorcycles with similar goals. Although the deteriorating security situation in Rivers State prevented visits to Bebor Model Nursery/Primary School this year, the increase in militant activity has not greatly affected the school’s day-to-day operations and which continue to function normally. As classroom construction projects at both schools near completion, plans are already being made for the next phase: addressing water and sanitation issues.
