There are only a few landscapes left in Europe so untouched as
the Drava river basin. The river runs mostly unregulated in its
natural bed, and its fauna is exceptionally rich. About 100
protected species of plants have been found on the Hungarian
riverside.
It is hard to imagine an adventure more exciting or recreation more
relaxing than being part of nature. It is a real experience for the
visitors, especially for children, to get acquainted with the rarities of
nature by the signs along the pathways.
There are also a lot of opportunities for active recreation by the
river: diving in the gravel pit ponds, photo excursions, an open-air
school and organized excursions with professional guides.
The Drava route can be divided into three main reaches: WestDrava, Middle-Drava and East-Drava. Before each chapter detailed
relief maps demonstrate the landscape, where the river kilometres
are indicated to assist orientation. The natural rarities of the
territory are shown in separate green panels.

Natural values along river Drava
In the clean and rapid water of river Drava there are several snail, mayfly and
caddisfly species known to occur only here in
Hungary. Of these, the
Drava caddisfly, of
which the Drava is the
only single habitat in the
entire world, must be
mentioned. The river has
Danube gudgeon
a rich dragonfly
community including species protected by
international conventions – e.g. green club-tailed
dragonfly, yellow-legged dragonfly. About 2/3 of
the fish species native to
Hungary are found in Drava and
its tributaries, side-branches, of
which 20 are protected...........
Osprey Especially important natural
values of these are the strictly protected zingel and Danube
streber, the rare Danube gudgeon, the Danubian roach having a
stable population here, and bullhead. Drava has primary
importance in water-bird migration and wintering: several
German tamarisk
thousand birds gather on the water in the autumn and especially
in thegermanica)
winter
(Myricaria
periods. Several strictly protected birds are regular visitors in the area (pygmy
cormorant, little egret, great white egret, osprey, etc.).
Drava gravel shoals are extremely valuable habitats.
The establishing willow bushes are home for the
protected hoary willow and German tamarisk, the
latter found only here in Hungary. Members of the
unique breeding community of gravel shoals are the
little ringed plover, the common tern and the rare little
tern, found nowhere else in
Black stork Hungary. Steep sandbanks
adjoining the river are populated by several thousand
breeding pairs of sand martin, as well as colourful
kingfishers and bee-eaters. The most important
protected plant species native to softwood gallery forests
include adder's tongue fern, tall fennel and the often
abundant scouring rush.
Little tern
Another important natural value is represented by
Freyer's purple emperor butterfly. Among the rich bird fauna of willow-poplar
groves notable are the strictly protected black stork and white-tailed eagle.

Water-touring on Drava
Water-touring on Drava
As part of Duna-Drava National Park, the entire Hungarian section of river Drava
(from 236 river km to 70,5 river km) is protected as a natural value!
One of the most important duties of
the National Park Directorate is to
protect the diversity and conserve its
species richness. This is what makes
water-touring here so unrivalled, at
the same time implying stipulations.
Here on Drava, water-touring is a
special, high-standard water ecotouring (canoeing) that aims at
educating about the area. Thus, in
order not to present an overload on
the river, certain spatial, temporal
and quantitative limitations are demanded.
Permissions required for organising water-tours on Drava are issued by Duna-Drava
National Park Directorate. In cases of Drava water-tours that include crossing the
country border, a permission from the border guard is also required!
1. Canoe tours
Period for water-touring: between 1st June and 15th September.
Departure places: Vízvár (191 river km), or Őrtilos (236 river km), depending on the
length of the tour selected by the participants.
Destination: mooring point at Drávaszabolcs (78 river km).
The highest size of any group can be 35 people.
4

2. Cruising on Drava
Drávaszabolcs
Cruising boats offering tourist programmes fulfil
an important role in showing the visitors the Drava
area.
There are two boats operating on the Hungarian
Drava section: one in Drávaszabolcs (Tour Chance
Ltd: +36-30-959-3530) and another in Barcs (Dráva
Tours Ltd: +36-82-460-526). Neither of them
operates on a schedule; instead they should be
ordered in advance.
Route of motorboat cruising at Drávaszabolcs:
1. Drávaszabolcs - Kormorános-island (Matty)
2. Drávaszabolcs - Vejti
3. Drávaszabolcs - Drávasztára
Route of motorboat cruising at Barcs:
1. Barcs (154 river km) – Csomoros-island (149 river km) – Drávatamási (144
river km)
2. Barcs (154 river km) – Csomoros-island (149 river km) – Barcs
3. Barcs – Sánc (Hungarian forestry unit on the further side of Drava)
3. Angling from boats
The regular usage of boats for angling, leisure and sport is
permitted only in certain river sections, with strict conditions.
Detailed information can be obtained from National Park staff.
4. Diving
As an outcome of gravel
excavation near the Drava,
several villages have gravel pit
ponds in their outskirts. The
most significant of these is the
one at Gyékényes (WestDrava region), hosting a
number of diving contests
each year.

West-Drava
Church of Őrtilos
The West-Drava
The West-Drava region of Duna-Drava National Park extends from Őrtilos to Heresznye.
Őrtilos, where river Mura flows into the Drava, is a paradise for nature-lovers and
naturalists. This is where water-tour participants depart for their adventurous journey
providing them with lasting memories, and this is where the international cycling route
called “Three Rivers” passes.
From the church built on Szent Mihály hill there is a beautiful panorama showing the
winding river and the varied landscape with floodland groves and small shoals. The
“Őrtilos Study Trail” leads from the hill across the floodland, educating about natural
values of the area. The Festung (meaning watch-post), a memorial of the 1848 Hungarian
Revolution, is located at a place offering one of the most beautiful panoramas in the
Őrtilos section of the Drava high embankment.
Új-Zrínyivár, the monument commemorating Miklós Zrínyi a captain defending
Hungary in the 16 th century, and the plank-fortress built by him is found on the hiking
route signalled with a red cross.
West-Drava
Unique vegetation is found inhabiting the gravel layer that covers the hill
series along river Drava, and the loess on top of it. The Illyrian oak-hornbeam
forests, beech woods and alder groves are home for sub-Mediterranean and
montane plants at the same time, as well as for those inhabiting temperate
hilly regions. The trifoliate toothwort (Dentaria trifolia), trifoliate anemone
(Anemone trifolia) and large red dead nettle (Laminum orvala) living here are
among the most precious botanical values of the National Park.
In Hungary the only place to find German tamarisk (Myricaria germanica)
showing of its pale red inflorescences, is on the open, bare gravel shoals of
river Drava.

Kotro Pond
After leaving the village Zákány, the traveller arrives
in Gyékényes. Near Gyékényes there are a number of
pit ponds of high water quality, totalling a surface
area of around 340 hectares. A well-known attraction
here is the Kotró Angling Pond and Spa, an
internationally renowned water for the diving sport,
with regular diving championships, ship model and
powerboat races. The pleasing natural atmosphere is
highly valued by triathlonists as well. Another
attraction for tourists is the Roman Catholic church of
the village.
West-Drava
11
North from Zákány, it is worth visiting the protected park of the Perczel Castle in
Somogybükkösd for its wonderful panorama and rare plants. The Roman Catholic
church and the old, mud-walled and thatch-roofed wine-cellar houses preserving the
heritage of old peasant-style building are also notable sights for the visitor.
Our journey continues towards Porrogszentpál.
It is worth travelling out to the Ágneslak Arboretum between the nearby
villages Porrog and Csurgónagymarton, where one can admire one of the
richest dendrological collections in South-Transdanubia.
12
West-Drava
In Csurgónagymarton, north of Csurgó, the ethnographic exhibition of the Ómág
Pension can be visited.
Having passed Porrogszentpál, the visitor arrives via
Porrogszentkirály in the culturally remarkable town of Csurgó,
mentioned first in a charter dating back to 1019. The Protestant
boarding school founded by count György Festetics has hosted a
number of distinguished scientists and artists. Several notable
individuals having relations to the town have been
commemorated by erecting a monument in honour of them in
the protected park of the school, including the great Hungarian
poet and writer Mihály Csokonai Vitéz who is known to have
written two of his dramas here, and also to have brought them
to stage with his disciples. The old school building now hosts
the city museum. Another notable sight is the church of the Holy
Spirit.
Millenium Park
In the area extending between Csurgó and Gyékényes one finds Lankóczi
Forest, belonging to Duna-Drava National Park, preserving the natural
treasures of marshland, bog and woodland associations that represent former
floodland wildlife, with several orchid species among the protected plants.
Alder bogs found in lower terrain are replaced on higher elevations by alder
groves, oak-ash-elm gallery forests and oak-hornbeam woods. Botanical
rarities of the area are the spring snowflake and the snakeshead fritillary.
13
West-Drava
Heading east of Csurgó, one arrives in
the village Szenta, once being a royal
estate. The Kaszó woodland surrounding the village is extremely rich in
game animals. Hikers find here a good
network of roads and trails, and also one
of Hungary's youngest forest railways.
Similarly, horse-riding camps are
becoming increasingly popular.
Those longing for the beauties and tranquillity of nature should not miss visiting
the living museum of ancient nature: the marshland of Baláta-lake. Due to the
peculiar microclimate of the area, both glacial plant species and ones of tropical
origin are preserved here. Its highly unique avian fauna is an attraction both to
scientists and to hobby bird-watchers. It is the only place in Hungary to find
Aldrovanda, an insect-eating aquatic plant, occurring at a mere 50 locations in the
entire world. An interesting feature is the formation of floating marsh, home for
a number of protected plants.
The lake is strictly protected, meaning that it can be visited by the forestry
railway only, or by expert guidance provided by Duna-Drava National Park
Directorate.
14
West-Drava
Departing towards the south-east from Csurgó, one arrives in Berzence where gravel
sediment mining has created a pit pond stretching over several hectares in the socalled Garics area. Along the broad and deep trenches of rivulets there are several fish
ponds and reservoirs. Among the landscape values of this area, the medieval fortress
ruins are notable, found in the centre of the settlement, and including the fortress
mound and the ruins of the brick-walled and plank-reinforced donjon part. Other
significant monuments of our architectural heritage include the hunting lodge of the
Festetics family, the baroque Holy Cross
Church, the chapel of Saint Antal decorated
with Italian altar-pieces, the chapel of Jesus'
Heart, and the "Nepomuk" sculpture group in
Árpád square.
Near Somogyudvarhely there are also
several pit ponds, fancied as angling places.
As symbols of sister settlement
relationship between Somogyud-varhely
Hunting lodge of the Festetics family
and the Romanian Bögöz since 1995, the
visitor finds here special Secler front gates constructed by
Transylvanian carving craftsmen, as well as flower-lined streets
and well-kept parks.
In the village Bélavár, the visitor to Kerék-hill finds a row of
tidy cellar-houses surrounded by hills and beech woods, an
unparalleled natural environment and stunning views. In KerékChurch of Bélavár hill there is always at least one vine-grower offering the visitor
cellar-cool beverages of some sort.
15
West-Drava
River Drava has carved its bed at only
around 5000 metres from the village; in
some of the dead branches there are gravel
minings, and when excavations are
discontinued, the pit ponds are taken over
by local people and favoured for swimming
and hiking. The feast held annually on
Saint Vid's Day is an important event.
Having travelled through Bélavár, the
village of Vízvár located along Drava river is reached. In the middle of the 16th century
a fortress secured by water and marsh stood here which was later set on fire and
abandoned. Somewhat further away
from the Drava, the Öregtölgyes
Parkland has enormous oak and
hornbeam trees to be admired, and
there are also resting places for hikers
and outdoor play area available for
children.
Fishing equipments
From the centre of the village a study trail leads out to the water-tour campsite
which has been created in a nice natural environment, embraced by a Drava sidebranch and gravel shoals. Information
boards assist the visitor in becoming
familiar with the most characteristic
floodland species.
The National Park guest house is
located along another side-branch. It is
available as a lodging facility for
nature-loving amateurs, scientists as
well as for anglers.
Study Trail
16
West-Drava
Our next station is the village Heresznye, first known from a charter dating back to
1219. This village is an important station when water-touring
on Drava. The highest riverbank along Drava (raising to
around 25m) is found here, with nesting colonies of several
bird species including sand martins and bee-eaters. One or
two white-tailed eagles are almost always seen circling above
the river. With a national park guide it is possible to admire
the winding Drava from atop the high embankment.
The next settlement
Bee-eater
towards the east is the
village Bolhó. The first document to mention the
place dates back to 1332. This region was for long
inhabited mostly by Croatians, the local
community leaving behind that kind of national
identity only by the end of the late 1890s. The
most important event for those living here is the
feast held on the day of Anne.

Middle Drava
Middle Drava
Continuing our way to the east, we reach Babócsa, a settlement having been a
regional centre during historic times. In addition to the ruins of the Arpadian
settlement (Benedictine monastery and Gothic cathedral), there are remains of several
Turkish buildings as well (a palace and a public spa).
In the edge of the current settlement towards the direction of Barcs one
finds the Babócsa Pasha Garden Nature Conservation
Area which could well be a World Heritage site. This
daffodil garden is the largest wildflower garden found
in Europe; the wild daffodil is found nowhere else in
such a vast population. Each spring there is an exquisite
carpet of protected daffodils covering the area.
19

The 12-hectare narcissus-field stretching where the settlement of the Turkish era was
located, is unique as such in the whole of Europe. In addition to the daffodil, lots of
other wild flower species contribute to the diverse
appearance of the landscape, and the nearby
forests are rich in game animals. On the first
Saturday of each May the internationally
reputable Daffodil Festival is held, together with
the Daffodil Run on a distance of 14km between
Barcs and Babócsa. Many visitors are attracted by
the South Transdanubian Cart-Driving
Championship as well as by the open-air thermal
water pool of the medicinal spa.

The Erzsébet Island Study Trail on Erzsébet Island embraced by Drava sidebranches is worth visiting. The three-kilometre road starting from the
street in front of the Railway station is easily accessible both by car and
bicycle. Before reaching one of the most pleasing Drava floodland walking
trails, we pass between a wet meadow and Mérus Forest Reserve. Looking
out from the hide with a pair of binoculars one can observe birds or even a
wild cat too.
Leaving Babócsa towards the south-east one reaches Komlósd. In the outskirts of this
village archaeological founds from the Stone Age were discovered. The mound in the
centre of the village was once occupied by a fortress, where coins from the era of King
Matthias were dug out. Betyár-hill rises from the fringes of the two-street village, said
to have been a resting site for Patkó Bandi the famous outlaw.
21
Middle Drava
If one makes a small detour between Babócsa and Drávaszentes towards Péterhida, it
is possible to visit the traditional house exhibition, the bell-tower, and the remains of the
water-mill which has become inactive following the regulations of Rinya river.
Nearby, the memories of animal farming are preserved by the
old wooded pasture. As extensive animal farming has greatly
diminished, these pastures that were created by clearing out
forests are nowadays artificially maintained.
Via the village Komlósd one arrives in
Drávaszentes where the Visitor Centre of
Duna-Drava National Park Directorate
was opened in autumn 2004. In the
pasture behind the building several
Hungarian domestic animal breeds can be
observed: Mangalica pigs, Racka and
Cikta sheep, goats, and we also pass a
herd of Hungarian Grey Cattle. Inside the
Visitor Centre there are brochures and
maps available about the area, whereas
national park staff offer rich programme
for groups. There is accommodation
available in the Visitor Centre for smaller
companies, and there are bicycles for hire,
too.

Starting from the visitor centre, the Drávaszentes Wet Meadows
Study Trail educates the visitor about the wildlife of wet meadows.
The trail terminates at the bird-watching tower, where in the
shallow pools even rare, protected species show up at migration
time.
22
Middle Drava
The next station of our journey is Barcs, the "capital" of
the Drava region. The city offers various types of
leisure activities. To the east from the bridge there is a
rivershore beach and also water sport grounds, whereas in
the town centre the Barcs Thermal Spa and Recreation
Centre awaits its visitors. Whoever wishes to undertake
a boat tour, can admire river Drava from a small
Spa at Barcs cruising boat departing from the mooring point. During
the journey it is possible to take a visit to Csomoros-island as well. Those feeling more
courageous have the possibility to try themselves in various wild-water sports too, in
the sports grounds and mooring point at lower side of the Barcs Drava bridge.
Cultural sights of the city of Barcs include the Roman Catholic "King Christ" church
built in 1806, and Drava Museum exhibiting about local history. Fanciers of horseriding might want to visit Hartmann Horse-riding Guesthouse for pleasant recreation.
Proceeding towards the north one
reaches Csokonyavisonta. The most
renown attraction here is the Thermal
Bath and Swimming Pool, but one should
not miss visiting the Roman Catholic and
Protestant churches. Csokonyavisonta is
the place where Xantus János was born,
based on whom Karl May created the
world-famous figure of Old Shatterhand.
Spa at Csokonyavisonta
Memories of the extensive animal farming once typical in the fields
adjoining the village is preserved by the protected wooded pasture where
the gigantic, shady old trees standing solitarily (with trunks measuring
nearly six metres on their perimeter) provide shelter or nesting site for
several protected bird species (e.g. black storks and white-tailed eagles).
Middle Drava
Continuing our way towards the city of Pécs, there are some other places worth
visiting: the angling waters at Barcs, the beautiful Kis-Bók (Drava dead-branch), and
the Castle and Park of Középrigóc which now function as a boarding school.
The three hundred year-old tree named after the outlaw Patkó Bandi, one of
the largest pedunculate oaks in Hungary, can be
admired right beside road 6 (near the railway
crossing). Not far from it stands another protected
tree, the Lyre-shaped Black Pine. Lake No 9 created on
Rigóc stream is a popular hiking area, hosting a rich
variety of birds throughout the year.
The Belső-Somogy sandy area and the associated marsy places represent
special natural values. Here, a habitat complex of unique atmosphere is the
Barcs Juniper Grove. The Juniper Study Trail is found within this area,
starting from the parking lot near the village Darány. As part of a pleasant
stroll, the information boards provide
information for the visitor about wildlife
found in the area. This valuable habitat
complex was nearly completely destroyed
in a fire in 2000. The flock of black Racka
sheep managed by the National Park have
their grazing grounds here in the juniper
grove.

24
Middle Drava
The high variability of habitat types in the area is represented by the presence of
acidophilic arenicolous grasslands,
birch-juniper stands, arenicolous
oak woods, bog lakelets, alder
marshy forests. The latter are home
to the royal fern found only here in
Hungary and the willow-leafed
bridewort. The most spectacular
part of boggy lakes is the Water Lily
Lake full of various aquatic plants
Water Lily including the stunning, protected
white water lily. These lakes are strictly protected natural sites, to be visited
with national park guidance only!
Heading towards the south from Darány, one reaches Drávatamási. This village is the
destination of the cruising boat from Barcs. Also when paddling on the river, it is
worth stopping here in order to visit the Nature Education Centre of the National Park,
where a variety of specialist programmes are provided if arranged beforehand. It is
also recommended to take a look at the side-branches which are popular angling
places.

East Drava –The Ormánság region
Only mosaic patches have survived of what once were
extensive oak-ash-elm gallery forests in the Drava Lowland.
The forest coverage of river-adjacent areas around the age
when Hungarians occupied their homeland is estimated to
have been about 60-80%. Where woodlands were later cut
down, marshy meadows evolved, which were then utilised
for hay production or grazing. The so-called "fok-" (canal-)
management was not so traditionally practised in the Drava
valley as along the Danube, but activities such as collecting
wild berries, herbs and mushrooms, apiculture, fishing,
animal grazing, fruit culturing, ashery relying on hardwood
gallery forests, craftsmanship utilising softwood from river-adjacent forests, osiery
and weaving, various types of reed usage, carving utensils and building boats were
typical along the Drava as well.
From the direction of Kastélyosdombó, the visitor arrives in the village Lakócsa,
where there is a traditional Croatian exhibition house on display.
In the outskirts of the village Szentborbás south of Lakócsa, the guest houses of DunaDrava National Park, suitable for recreation, is found right on the riverside. With its
garden, this is the very building that hosted the inauguration ceremony of the
National Park in 1996.
Felsőszentmárton
In the tidy main street of the
village Felsőszentmárton
visitors have the opportunity to see folk architectural monuments including a house raised on
wooden "feet" and traditional
outhouses. South of the
village is lake Mrtvica, its
rich fish fauna representing
enjoyment for many
anglers. A natural value in
this area is the pasture
meadow under local protection.
31
East Drava
If proceeding towards the east, a locally protected marsh is reached near the
village Markóc, hosting typical marshland fauna and flora. To the north, outside
the village Drávafok another locally protected pasture is found.
In Drávafok sights such as the Catholic and Protestant churches, as well as Ormánság
Foundation, residing in the building that once used to be the Fodor Manor-house and
offering programmes related with organic farming and alternative resources, are also
worth visiting
Among cultural historic and artistic values of the village
Bogdása east of Drávafok, one must mention the wooden public
monument created by Győző Szatyor local graphic artist,
wood-carver and folk artist using folk motifs, and also the
oldest (15th century) Roman Catholic church of the area. Győző
Szatyor's workshop is open for visitors upon prior
arrangement. The Parish Hall is a well-preserved old peasant
house with traditional porch.
Natural values to be found here are the wooded pasture and the nearby
marsh. A 400 year-old group of trees in the village is another curiosity.
Our journey is continued towards Sellye, the oldest
settlement in the Ormánság region. The only
protected building, the baroque Draskovich Castle is
found in Köztársaság square. With a total of 355 tree
species, the park around the building is freely
accessible for visitors. Nearly all of the most
significant conifers from Canada to China are found
in this collection. The Kiss Géza Ormánság Museum is
Spa at Sellye
in the square in
front of the Castle building, with the sculpture of
Kiss Géza in front, and with a raised house in its
court, transferred here from the village
Csányoszró. Outside there is the bell-tower from
Gyöngyfa. The Swimming Pool and Thermal Spa as
well as the paddling pond are also worth visiting.
Draskovich Castle
32
East Drava
Heading towards river Drava from Sellye,
Drávaiványi is reached where the major
attraction is the Protestant Church with the
most beautiful painted-coffer ceiling of the
Ormánság region. The decorative ceiling is
made of 167 painted coffers. Having the only
figurative painting in the entire Ormánság,
it is a unique treasure.
Towards Drávasztára it is worth making a
detour to Révfalu. Established on a low hill
rising from the floodland, this village has no
permanent residents any longer; it has
become a resort village.
With a turn back towards the original
direction, the visitor arrives in Drávasztára
where a furnished room with utensils of
earlier times is dedicated to preserving the
memories and culture of Croatians here.
One should not miss taking a look at the
mooring point from where there is
Church of Drávaiványi
magnificent panorama showing one of the
large bends of river Drava. In summertime, visitor groups might as well choose
arriving here by boat from Drávaszabolcs.
In the village one first sees old pedunculate oaks. The natural value in the
neighbourhood is the Vájás side-branch, teaming with different members of
the valuable and characteristic wildlife including strictly protected whitetailed eagles, black kites and the protected marsh helleborine.
Travelling towards the north through Hirics, Vajszló is reached which is known as
the capital of the Ormánság region. It is one of the oldest
villages here, founded in the period when Hungarians
occupied their homeland. Located in the centre, the
Kodolányi János Memorial Library and Museum educates about
the career of this famous Hungarian writer, and displays an
early 20th century forestry office. The Roman Catholic and the
Protestant churches, both to be found nearby, were built in the
18th century. The region is famous for the locally grown
water-melon.
33
East Drava
The rivulet Fekete-víz and the stream Okor, both of them running in a regulated
bed, have their confluence outside Vajszló. Natural values in the area are the
wooded pasture and part of the Bükk-hát forest reserve. Rare birds occurring here are
the strictly protected red kite and black stork.
The Protestant churches in
the neighbouring Kórós,
Adorjás, Kémes and Kovácshida are also worth taking a
look at.
Kórós
Kórós, central coffer
South of the nearby villages Cún and Szaporca lies one of the
most important areas of Duna-Drava National Park: the CúnSzaporca dead branch. Its open water surface is pretty small; there
is reed and willow bushes instead.
Travelling via Harkány, famous for its medicinal spa, we reach the city of Siklós. The
most important monument here is the castle. The restored Malkocs-bej mosque recalls
memories of the Turkish era. The Serb Orthodox church has unparalleled altar
paintings. There is a swimming pool as well in town. In the south-eastern side of the
castle hill stands the medieval parish church, with the adjoining monastery which
currently functions as a Pottery Art Workshop, with permanent exhibition inside.
The nearby village Máriagyűd is a famous pilgrimage place. East of the church there
is the Holy Spring, the water of which pilgrims used to carry home in the famous
locally made jars.
Mosque in Siklós
The castle of Siklós
34
East Drava
Turning towards the south at Harkány, the
traveller arrives in Drávaszabolcs. The new
bridge that was built to replace the one blown up
in World War II was inaugurated in 1974, when
the border crossing station, an official crossing
point by boat as well, was opened. It is here that
the cruising boat named Szirén awaits those
wishing to enjoy the special Drava atmosphere
from the water. After the boat tour it is highly
recommended to visit one of the cellars of the
Villány-Siklós wine route!
Harkány
East of Drávaszabolcs, our way is continued via
Gordisa to Matty. The Matty lake is suitable for
angling and water sports as well. The nearby
Lantos Tanya expects its visitors with a
traditional peasant yard, various programmes
and delicious meals. On your way to the Drava
river-shore, pay a visit to the Matty Avian
Matty
Memorial Park, to take a look at the carved
wooden poles erected for the memory of bird species that have become extinct in
Hungary, and at the "nestbox-city".
The Keselyűsfa Study Trail on the riverside offers a view on the forest reserve across
the river, home for nesting cormorants.
The strictly protected Szársomlyó Hill can be seen from quite a distance. In medieval
ages a fortress was built on top of the hill, of which some remains are still found.
The area is threatened by limestone mining which by now has been
already restricted. The hill is home to several strictly protected species
which do not occur anywhere else in Hungary, including the Hungarian
saffron, the large disk medick, the dwarf broomrape, the houseleek, and
the large whip snake. The hill can only be visited with guidance
provided by Duna-Drava National Park staff.
35
East Drava
The Nagyharsány-Villány Sculpture Park is located at the eastern foot of Szársomlyó
Hill, beside the road leading to Villány. Here there is an open-air sculpture exhibition
on display for the visitors. On the southern slopes
of the hill, red grape types traditionally producing
high quality wine are grown. We are heading
towards Villány, the next station of the VillánySiklós Wine Route,
famous primarily for its
red wines, and having
won the title "City of
Grapes and Wine". In
Row of cellar houses
addition to wine,
accommodation is also offered for the visitor in pensions
and guesthouses. The Wine Museum is located among the
architecturally protected row of cellar houses, educating
about traditions and tools of wine-making. The Roman Nagyharsány-Villány Sculpture Park
Catholic church was built in the 15th century; the Templomhegy quarry behind it is a nature protection site with a study trail focusing on local
geological values.
