and families.
Course Description: Working as a provider or caregiver involved in the care of children and
their families can take an emotional toll that compromises professional functioning and quality of
life. Caring for yourself is one of the most important (and often one of the most overlooked)
things you can do as a provider or caregiver. When your needs are taken care of, the people you
care for will benefit, too. This interactive training will provide you with an overview on how to
increase provider resiliency and will illustrate how organizations and individuals can implement
strategies that encourage self-care, promote awareness about vicarious trauma and reduce
compassion fatigue and burnout.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
 Define self-care and its importance
 Explain secondary (or vicarious) trauma
 Describe the potential impact of vicarious trauma on health workers
 Identify at least 3 self-care strategies or activities
 Develop a self-care plan
