WELCOME TO PROVINCETOWN
Welcome to Provincetown, on the outermost edge of Cape Cod, where
you will find a place like no other: the first landing place of the pilgrims;
a Portuguese fishing village; America’s oldest and largest art colony; a
jazz, disco and drag show mecca; a safe-haven for creatives, innovators,
adventurers and outsiders; and now a site where inspired, inventive and
independent film is developed, fostered and presented to the world.
From June 17th to June 21st, the Provincetown Film Society will present its
17th annual showcase of the best in American and International independent film with more than 87 feature-length and short films and dozens of
parties, panel discussions and events. The defining honor of the Festival
is its “Filmmaker on the Edge Award,” honoring outstanding achievement,
innovation, and vision in filmmaking and given to a film artist whose
admirable body of work pushes the boundaries of the medium.
The Provincetown Film Society (PFS) which began as the Provincetown International Film Festival in 1999 is a non-profit arts organization dedicated
to making Provincetown – with its unique combination of art institutions,
culture, history and natural beauty – the global destination for creative
exploration in film.

CEO EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The first film festival event I ever attended was a 1979 screening of
“The Marriage of Maria Braun” directed by Rainer Fassbinder. The
film would earn international acclaim for its young director at the
time. For me, it provided a first glimpse into the postwar milieu in
which my German mother came of age. Since then, I have never
doubted the core relevance of film festivals as a means to connect
us with stories outside of the mainstream that either mirror our own
experiences or transport us into the unique experiences of others.
The alchemy required in assembling a cohesive program of more
than 87 feature-length and short films that speak to our very own
diverse community, is nothing short of a miracle orchestrated by
founding Artistic Director Connie White, Director of Programming
Andrew Peterson, Senior Programmer Lisa Viola and a welcome new
addition to the team, Shorts Programmer Mike Plante.
Other miracle workers include a dedicated festival staff and team
of volunteers led by Festival Manager Beth Caldarello and Deputy
Director Kelly Gilpatrick; our steadfast Board of Directors, and our
esteemed advisory board led by John Waters. Finally, we are deeply
indebted to all of our sponsors and supporters whose contributions — large and small — are a testament to the unifying force that
festivals and the stories they represent bring to building community,
and enriching our lives.

Provincetown International Film Festival 2015
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
The first movie I saw in Provincetown was Blade Runner, during the
summer of 1982. Fresh out of college, a bunch of us chipped in to
rent a summer cottage in Truro, and we lived for the summer nights
in Provincetown and the summer days on the outer cape beaches. At
that time, there were three independent cinemas in town, and it was
better than Disneyland.
Now, in 2015, independent film not only survives -- it thrives in
Provincetown. The successes of the Provincetown Film Society, and
its Film Festival, Film Institute, and Waters Edge Cinema are built
on this town’s rock-solid artistic legacy. Almost 100 years after
Eugene O’Neill rolled onto Commercial Street with his “trunk full of
plays,” this year’s festival spotlights another local hero, the pioneering Abstract Expressionist Robert Motherwell, featured in the new
documentary PEGGY GUGGENHEIM – ART ADDICT. Just as Motherwell
shook up the art scene in the 1940s and 50s, today’s cinema simply
wouldn’t be the same without groundbreaking indie-film warrior
John Waters, who joins us each year to introduce his favorite films
and filmmakers.
The 17th PIFF film line-up is as adventurous, relevant, challenging
and delicious as ever, giving filmgoers a fully-realized selection of
what we all want – passionate, accomplished works of art that
make us think and laugh and cry. Join us in welcoming the many
filmmakers who arrive this week, as they too discover Provincetown,
an undisputedly fertile ground for the cutting-edge, that attracts the
most creative and daring among us.

John Waters shares his hilarious
cross-country hitchhiking memoir,
CARSICK, as the successful book
comes out in paperback. His journey
entails waving a cardboard sign
that reads, “I’m Not Psycho” and
braving a seemingly scary route
across America from Baltimore to San
Francisco. Prior to the trek, Waters
imagines many colorful scenarios,
none of which prepare him for the
reality of thumbing it across the good
old U.S.A. His real-life rides include
a gentle eighty-one year old farmer
who is convinced that Waters is a
hobo, an indie band on tour, and
the filmmaker’s unexpected hero: a
young, sandy-haired Republican in a
Corvette. Enjoy the sweetly subversive John Waters on the page and in

DIRECTOR CHAT
AND SCREENING
TALK AND FILM BY
JENNIE LIVINGSTON
Director and PFI Filmmaker Resident
Jennie Livingston gives PIFF a short talk
about the links between non-fiction
and narrative features plus a 15-minute
demo of her work-in-progress, EARTH
CAMP ONE. To date, the film has been
made possible by the Guggenheim Foundation, the Rosenthal Family Foundation,
Netflix, and 540 Kickstarter backers.
Making this independent nonfiction film
has been a long process, as the work is
not a conventional “doc,” but more of a
memoir/essay. After years of work, she’s
ready to bring in an editor, and is looking
for allies and donors to join her on this
cinematic journey. This film is likely to
do for conversations about loss and
impermanence what Paris is Burning did
for conversations about gender, race,
class, and identity. Is there anything
cooler than reflection? Or complexity?

FIRST TIME DIRECTOR
JOHN SCHLESINGER
AWARD
HBO knows how to find and grow
incomparable content that is often a
bit left of the main. So it’s no surprise
that they support PIFF’s extensive efforts to grow fresh indie talent. One
of the ways they step up is by providing awards for the audience’s Best
Narrative Feature, Best Documentary
Feature and Best Short Film picks.
In memory of John Schlesinger, this
special award is given to a first-time
doc or narrative feature film director
at our Closing Night Party. John
Schlesinger’s (1926-2003) outstanding work as a director over the past
four decades includes such highly
acclaimed films as Midnight Cowboy,
Marathon Man, The Day of the Locust,
Sunday, Bloody, Sunday and Cold
Comfort Farm — to name a few.
The awards are based entirely
upon audience balloting and are
announced during our Closing Night
Party June 21. In other words, PIFF’s
most prominent awards are decided
by the most important panel of
judges — you.
2014 prizes were awarded to: One

Bobcat
Goldthwait
FILMMAKER ON THE EDGE
Sponsored by LITHExcel
PIFF annually presents the “Filmmaker on the Edge” award to a film artist whose
outstanding achievement, innovation, and vision continues to push the boundaries
of the medium throughout their body of work. Past honorees are: John Waters,
Christine Vachon, Ted Hope, James Schamus, Gus Van Sant, Todd Haynes,
Jim Jarmusch, Mary Harron, Gregg Araki, Todd Solondz, Quentin Tarantino,
Guy Maddin, Kevin Smith, Darren Aronofsky, Roger Corman, Harmony Korine
and David Cronenberg .
A recent review of one of Goldthwait’s films began by asking, “Is it time to start
taking Bobcat Goldthwait seriously as a director?” This may sound like the start of
a joke you’d hear in his stand-up act, but the question is real and the answer is a
resounding yes. With brutal and funny writing, Goldthwait’s films are subversive—
with big laughs sitting atop thoughtful, interesting ideas. In SLEEPING DOGS LIE
(originally titled, plaintively, STAY), he explored the question of how much honesty a
relationship can withstand. And in World’s Greatest Dad, Robin Williams’ title character learns that the things you want most may not be the things that make you happy.
How did this happen? Goldthwait began his career doing stand-up comedy as a
teenager in Syracuse, New York. His unique comedic voice soon propelled him
to national attention and led to acting. But through it all, Goldthwait knew that
directing was his calling—and critics and festivals agree. From Toronto to Sundance,
Sydney to Edinburgh, his darkly funny and brave films have been hailed, as not only
funny and smart, but brilliant, astonishing, and profound.
“I want to prove F. Scott Fitzgerald wrong,” Goldthwait has said, “that there are
no second acts.” The Provincetown Film Festival’s 2015 Filmmaker on the Edge
award loudly proclaims that in the case of Bobcat Goldthwait, Fitzgerald was
decidedly wrong.

FAITH HUBLEY CAREER ACHIEVEMENT
Presented by the MALLRD Foundation
PIFF’s Faith Hubley Career Achievement Award honors the life’s work of
Academy Award-winning filmmaker, artist, and animator Faith Hubley
(1924–2001). Bestowed in partnership with the Hubley family, it’s presented
to a film artist whose career highlights a global vision, aesthetic harmony,
and bold and intelligent artistic choices. Past honorees include Mira Nair, Ed
Lachman and Debra Winger.
Blessed with beauty, brains and exquisite comedic timing, JENNIFER
COOLIDGE makes every film she’s in better. Her talent shines in a range of
characters, from her breakthrough role as Stifler’s mom in American Pie, to
the goofy and lovelorn manicurist Paulette in Legally Blonde, to the golddigging dog owner in Christopher Guest’s BEST IN SHOW. Jennifer Coolidge
can be counted on to steal scenes whenever she appears.
Coolidge’s left-of-center comedic mind was apparent at an early age, when
she told her parents that she wanted to be a professional dump picker and
door-to-door lullaby singer. Born and raised in Boston, she received a BA in
Theater from Emerson College and soon took her no-holds-barred comedic
approach to NYC, where she studied at the American Academy of Dramatic
Arts and performed with the Gotham City Improv Group. Then in L.A., she
joined the legendary Groundlings comedy troupe and began appearing in
film and television. The rest is history.

OPENING NIGHT FILM!
SLEEPING WITH OTHER PEOPLE
(USA, 2015, 95 minutes)
Directed by Leslye Headland
Sponsored by XFINITY
Writer-director Leslye Headland (Bachelorette) returns to Provincetown with a
crowd-pleasing comedy that the New York Times describes as “a When Harry
Met Sally for a new generation,” a subversive 21st-century twist on traditional
romance in which frankness becomes an end in itself.
A dozen years after losing their virginity to each other in 2002 on a Columbia
University dormitory rooftop, Lainey (Community’s Alison Brie) and Jake (SNL
alum Jason Sudeikis) meet at a sex-addiction support group in New York. A
spark resurfaces, but they’ve walked this road before. Both of them are abject
failures in romance—Lainey is perennially obsessed with an emotionally unavailable old flame (Adam Scott), and Jake leads a life of serial infidelity and
self-sabotage. They agree, despite their avowed attraction to one another, to
become exclusively platonic friends and mutually support their recovery.
Really, what could be more supportive than teaching your friend proper selfstimulation? Can love bloom while you’re actively sleeping with other people
and reporting back to your confidant each and every conquest and failure?
Well, of course it can, but in scenes wrought by Headland’s brazenly sharp wit,
the risks and rewards of humiliating pitfalls are great.

I AM MICHAEL
(USA, 2015, 98 minutes)
Directed by Justin Kelly
Justin Kelly’s thought-provoking exploration—Gus Van Sant served as
executive producer—is as compelling and complex as Michael’s transformation. The film depicts the years when an idealistic Michael, along with his
long-term partner (Zachary Quinto), seeks to empower an enlightened queer
generation through their writing and films. Even so, life in Nova Scotia makes
Michael restless; he even introduces a young hottie (Charlie Carver) into their
relationship, transforming it into a threesome.
A project about gay youth trapped in religious families deeply affects him,
and then a sudden health threat triggers a zealous search for answers. What
he eventually finds is born-again Christianity, a girlfriend (Emma Roberts), and
the conviction that “homosexuality is death.” Like the life story that it’s based
on, I AM MICHAEL is a work of art that challenges our preconceptions and is
sure to keep people talking and questioning.

TAB HUNTER CONFIDENTIAL
(USA, 2015, 92 minutes)
Directed by Jeffrey Schwarz
In the 1950s, Tab Hunter is number one at the box office and number one on
the music charts. He is Hollywood’s most sought-after star and America’s boy
next door. Natalie Wood, Debbie Reynolds and Sophia Loren are just a few of
the actresses he is romantically linked to. Nothing, it seems, can damage
Tab Hunter’s career. Nothing, that is, except for the fact that Tab Hunter is
secretly gay.
Now, Tab Hunter’s secret is out. In this documentary portrait by Jeffrey
Schwarz (I Am Divine; Vito), which is based on Hunter’s revealing memoir,
we will meet, for the first time, the real Tab Hunter as he shares with us his
story—that of a happy, healthy survivor of Hollywood’s roller coaster.
The real man behind the public image had a father he never knew, a mother
with mental illness, and a faith in God despite being rejected by his church.
He had affairs with Tony Perkins and an Olympic skater, and a monogamous
relationship with a longtime partner. Hunter, who narrates the film, says that
today he’s “happy to be forgotten,” but TAB HUNTER CONFIDENTIAL is bound to
keep his scandalously wholesome memory alive.

(USA, 2014, 82 minutes)
Directed by Paul Weitz
Sponsored by Local Gay Business
A most impressive detour into independent filmmaking from writer-director
Paul Weitz (American Pie; About a Boy; In Good Company), GRANDMA is a
movie about choice in both the specific and the abstract—about the choices
we make, for good and for ill, and how we come to feel about them through
the prism of time. Marcia Gay Harden dazzles in an over-the-top turn as
Elle’s daughter and Sage’s mom, but the movie is truly Tomlin’s. Her Elle is a
hell-raiser who is deeply thoughtful and honest, and Weitz says he wrote it
just for her.

THE END OF THE TOUR
(USA, 2014, 105 minutes)
Directed by James Ponsoldt
Sponsored by Sidewalk Films
Shortly after the publication of Infinite Jest, his 1000-page, footnotecrammed, dystopian literary epic, novelist David Foster Wallace agrees to an
interview with Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky, who accompanies him on
the last five days of his book tour. A tenuous yet intense relationship develops
between journalist and his fiercely private subject, a generational hero whose
writing was an inspiration to Dave Eggers, Jonathan Franzen, and Elizabeth
Wurtzel, to name a few. The two men bob and weave around each other,
sharing laughs and also revealing hidden frailties—but in their reluctance,
it’s never clear just how truthful they are being with each other.
Jesse Eisenberg as Lipsky and Jason Segal as Wallace both reveal great
depths of emotion in their performances. The film—“a vibrant, intelligent
conversation piece,” per IONCINEMA’s Nicholas Bell—is based on Lipsky’s critically acclaimed memoir about the unforgettable encounter, written following
Wallace’s suicide in 2008 at the age of 46 (Wallace had suffered from severe
depression for more than 20 years). Lipsky’s discovery of Wallace’s death
opens the movie, and gives their relationship the gravitas it deserves.
Directed with humor and tenderness by James Ponsoldt, last here at PIFF
with the film The Spectacular Now.

(USA, 2015, 73 minutes)
Directed by Andrew Dresher
Charismatic and ruthless businessman Rick Carver is making a killing
by repossessing homes -- gaming
the real estate market, Wall Street
banks and the US government. When
he evicts Dennis Nash, a single
father trying to care for his mother
and young son, Nash becomes so
desperate to provide for his family
that he goes to work for Carver —
the very man who evicted him in the
first place.
BEATBOX, a fresh and lively new
film that captures the international
phenomenon of beatboxing, is set
in Brooklyn — New York’s musical
epicenter. The film follows Pete, a
twenty-something DJ and musician,
whose day job is delivering beer for
his girlfriend’s family business. But
come night, our underdog hero Pete
is in his makeshift home recording
studio, laying down beats.
Carver promises Nash a way to regain
his home and earn security for his
family, but slyly seduces him into a
lifestyle of wealth and glamour. As
Nash falls deeper into Carver’s web,
he finds himself in a situation more
brutal and dangerous than he ever
imagined. With Andrew Garfield,
Michael Shannon and Laura Dern.
Soon after he meets a mysterious
record company owner, Pete is
introduced to the world of Brooklyn
beatboxing and to the lovely singer
and beatboxer Rye. Culminating in
a national beatbox championship
competition where performers collaborate and also face-off, BEATBOX
is a sure-to-please musical journey
with a big heart.

FRESNO
(USA, 2015, 85 minutes)
Directed by Jamie Babbit
A nuanced story of the depths and
escalating passions of female friendship, BREATHE tells the tale of Charlie,
seventeen and bored. School, where
she has been friends with the same
crew for years, holds no surprises. Enter
Sarah, the hip, new transfer student who
brings an air of boldness and danger into
Charlie’s world. The two form an instant
connection.
FRESNO is a risqué comedy about
co-dependent sisters who work as hotel
maids in the title city. Shannon (Judy
Greer) is fresh out of sex rehab when her
younger, overly optimistic lesbian sister
Martha (Natasha Lyonne) lands her a job
at a hotel. When Shannon jeopardizes
her fresh start by accidentally killing a
hotel guest after a relapse, Martha goes
to great lengths to help her sister cover
up the crime. Director Jamie Babbit’s
(But I’m a Cheerleader) film features an
all-star cast including Aubrey Plaza, Molly
Shannon, Fred Armisen, Ron Livingston,
and Clea Duvall.
Through shared secrets, love interests
and holiday getaways, their relationship
deepens to unspoken intimacy. But with
intimacy comes jealousy and unrealistic
expectations, and the teens soon find
themselves on a trajectory toward an
extraordinary collapse — one so jarring
neither could have seen it coming.

Inglourious Basterds and Beginners,
directs this new film based on the bestselling French Young Adult novel Respire.

THE SECOND MOTHER
(Brazil, 2015, 110 minutes)
Directed by Anna Muylaert
RADIATOR is the story of how we all,
in the end, become the parents of
our parents. Leonard (British stage
actor Richard Johnson) and Maria
(Gemma Jones from Harry Potter and
Bridget Jones fame) live in splendid
isolation in the kind of chaos not
seen since Grey Gardens. However,
old age has caught up with them and
their son Daniel arrives to help. Thus
begins an acute, painful, and darkly
comedic examination of family life
and love.
When Val left her home in rural Brazil
to work thousands of miles away as
a live-in housekeeper in Sao Paulo,
she carried the guilt of leaving her
young daughter Jessica behind with
relatives. Now 13 years later, Jessica
shows up in Sao Paulo, and her
presence throws the unspoken class
barriers within the affluent home
where Val works into disarray.
This deeply humane, intensely
observed, and yet funny film boasts
extraordinary performances from
its leads. It’s a poignant portrayal
of love, aging, marriage and family,
from producers Rachel Weisz and
Barbara Broccoli.
Regina Case, as Val, and Camila
Mardila, as Jessica, won a much-deserved special jury prize for co-acting
for their portrayals of mother and
daughter at this year’s Sundance Film
Festival. And, director Anna Muylaert
spins a culturally specific tale with
universal appeal, in this savvy,
socially conscious crowd-pleaser.

Britni West’s directorial debut, which
won the Jury Award for Narrative

Mackenzie, a troubled but daring
teenage girl, is sent by her struggling mother to live with her uncle in

seems like a supportive caretaker and
friend, the relationship soon takes a
troubling turn and Mackenzie is forced
to run. Trying to make her way back

of the people in the her hometown of
Kalispell, Montana.
After its Slamdance win, TIRED

LARRY KRAMER IN
LOVE AND ANGER
(USA, 2014, 82 minutes)
Directed by Jean Carlomusto
Presented by HBO
IN MY FATHER’S HOUSE explores
identity and legacy within a family,
as Grammy award-winning rapper
Che ‘Rhymefest’ Smith and his longlost father reconnect and try to build
a new future in Chicago’s turbulent
South Side.
Taking on the legendary author,
activist and playwright Larry Kramer,
this film presents a thoughtful
portrait of one of the most important
and controversial figures in contemporary gay America. A political firebrand, he gave voice to the outrage
and grief that inspired a generation
of gay men and lesbians to fight for
their lives. Kramer was vilified by
some and lionized by others for his
actions on the frontlines of the AIDS
epidemic.
Himself a child of a broken home,
Che hasn’t seen his father, Brian, in
over 25 years. But after buying his
father’s childhood home, Che sets
out to find him, and learns that he
is now a homeless alcoholic living
just blocks away. This rich story of
identity, memory and redemption
comes from the veteran directors of
Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work.

LISTEN TO ME MARLON LIVE FROM NEW YORK!

(USA, 2015, 90 minutes)
Directed by Stevan Riley
Directed by Bao Nguyen
LISTEN TO ME MARLON is an enthrallingly intimate look at the brilliant,
troubled and always charismatic
screen legend, Marlon Brando. A
creative odyssey into the mind and
motivation of an enigma, Brando’s
own voice leads the storytelling there are no interviewees, no talking
heads, just Marlon guiding us into
the padlocked recesses of his own
memory, and through the story of
his life.
As Marlon looks back on his legendary career, film clips are woven
alongside a personal archive; the
young Brando’s electrifying looks,
raw performances and brooding
charm put us entirely under his
spell, leaving no doubt why he once
skyrocketed to overnight stardom.
What emerges is Brando’s intellectual
introspection, humor and sensitivity.

its opening deadly skinny-dip to its
explosive climax. It never gets old.
Marshall and his wife, Tippi Hedren,
began to raise lions in 1971 in Sherman Oaks, California, in the hopes
of making this feature, which was
finally completed ten years later.
It’s about a family who visits their
scientist dad (Marshall) in Africa
only to discover that his house has
been invaded by giant cats—and
dad likes it. The movie’s re-release
was launched at the SXSW Festival
earlier this year, and now the growls
and scratches are coming closer!
Marshall’s sons play themselves
onscreen and Hedren’s daughter,
Melanie Griffith, is on hand as well.
The cast reportedly did all its own
stunts, and suffered quite a few
injuries, yet no animals (other than
Homo sapiens) were harmed during
the production.
104 Provincetown International Film Festival 2015
KILLER JOE
(USA, 2011, 102 minutes)
Directed by William Friedkin
Sun., June 21, Art House 2
@ 5:00pm
If Friedkin, the ’70s phenom who directed The French Connection and The
Exorcist was trying to prove that he’d never lost his mojo, then this hyper-violent,
proudly sleazy Texas noir — the story of a family of lowlifes who hires a hit man
to kill their estranged, biological mother for the insurance money — certainly
does the trick. KILLER JOE is one dark psychodrama, and Matthew McConaughey, as the twisted Dallas police detective who’s freelancing as an assassin,
is something to behold. Indeed, everyone in the film is an outrageously atrocious
human being: the drug-dealer son (Emile Hirsch) who comes up with the plan
to murder mom, his dim-witted dad (Thomas Haden Church), his cuckoo sister
(Juno Temple), and his lurid stepmom (Gina Gershon), all of whom have dibs in
the payoff.
SPECIAL SCREENINGS
JOHN WATERS PRESENTS
The screenplay is by Steppenwolf Theatre stalwart Tracy Letts, who adapted his
play — Letts and Friedkin previously adapted Letts’s theatrical paranoia party,
Bug. “The film depicts a world that is holding onto habitability by its fingernails,”
wrote Roger Ebert in his review. “It left me speechless.” What better choice for
shared screening with John Waters, that master of pushing the envelope.
Each year, our own John Waters
picks one of his favorite edgy
films to present at PIFF. Be sure
to arrive early and stay late as
his intros and post-screening
conversations are legendary.
