Presidents Report 2012
It is my pleasure to present the President's Report to the 82nd Annual General
Meeting.
First of all, I must apologize for my absence as I am at present away from New
Zealand. Thanks to Sarah Gordon, the chairman of the Board, who had kindly
agreed to chair this Annual General Meeting on my behalf.
As I had mentioned earlier in my report at the Half Yearly General Meeting,
this again is another year of change. ABA has a new General Manager, John
McGregor, since April this year. With him in the driving seat, there were
changes in the roles of staff, and the overall management and operations.
These changes are aimed at improved performance of the Association, but it
needs time for consolidation. Thanks to all the staff who had paid lots of efforts
and patience to put up with all these changes.
ABA had been loosing money for many years. It is obvious that the
improvement of the Association's financial position is one of the top priorities.
Our new General Manager is working very hard on this. The Association is
aiming at a target of at least break even. At the same time, the Association
would try not to increase the affiliation fees for our club members if at all
possible, in order to avoid additional burden to our affiliated clubs.
Congratulations to all winners of the various tournaments. Well done! Our
Association is the biggest association in New Zealand, and we should be able
to do better. We would like to aim at being the number one association in New
Zealand with the best results.
Kiwi Cup Tournament was a great success as I had mentioned before in my
report at the Half Yearly General Meeting. It was enjoyed be most of the
players participated, especially those from overseas, and they strongly
requested this tournament to be held again next year.
Thanks to all the Board Members and the volunteers who had spent lots of
their time and efforts in helping our Association to run numerous operations
and tournaments. Thanks also to all of you for your continual support. I wish
you all a safe and enjoyable festival season.

Chairman’s Report
I believe that 2012 has proved to be the year in which the Auckland
Badminton Association has turned a corner with a lot of positives to look
forward to.




ABA ran a successful inaugural KiwiCup competition in March with
approximately 50 athletes travelling from overseas. This tournament is
again planned for 2014.
nd
General Manager John McGregor started with us on 2 April.
We have undertaken capital expenditure in repairing the men’s showers,
replacing the CCTV security system (which has already proved
beneficial), upgrading / replacing the computer server and IT, and
upgrading the telephone system – all long overdue.
The second half of the financial year has seen our position get back on
track to the extent that I am very pleased to report that we have broken
even for this year. Not the profit forecasted last year, however I have
every confidence that the outstanding ground work carried out by our
new GM has laid an excellent foundation for ongoing improvements in
our finances.
John McGregor has undertaken a review of the job descriptions of the staff
which has resulted in them (the staff) taking a much more of a hands-on role
for their particular area of responsibility, this in turn is already having a bearing
on efficiencies and revenue. This will allow for better allocation of funds to the
overall development of our sport at the grass routes level and onwards to the
players in our high development squads.
John has also undertaken the reorganisation of the financial accounts which
was started with Graeme Evans and has been developed and refined further.
The Board would like to express their sincere thanks to Graeme for all his
work and input to these accounts.
In 2012 our winners on the courts were:
Auckland 2 - the Slazenger Cup
Under 23 - New Zealand champs
Under 19 Auckland 1 Division 1 - North Island and New Zealand Division 1
9
Under 17 Auckland 1 Division 1 - North Island and New Zealand Division 1
Under 15 Auckland 1 - North Island Division 1
SuperVets Auckland 1
(Honourable mention: In count back #1 lost Wisden by 1, U15 #1 lost NZ
Champs by 1)
These victories were achieved by on-court outstanding performances by
individuals who “came to play and win” encapsulated by Samuel Ho wining the
Badminton New Zealand Junior Player of the Year Award presented last
Saturday at their annual Awards night.
These performances are what the game of badminton is all about and why we
are all involved. All players are to be applauded for their achievements on the
court and an inspiration to those who strive to overtake them. “You are only
as good as your last victory” – don’t dwell on your losses, but move on to your
next victorious achievement.
There will always be upsets and disappointments. These pass and need to be
kept in context of the game itself. Remember it is about the positive promotion
of the game – never the individual. In my opinion if you are not interested in
promoting badminton in general through your Club and Auckland Badminton in
particular, then don’t be involved at any level with the Auckland Badminton
Association.
This is my last report as Chair. I have been in this role now for 5 years. 5
years which have been personally challenging but also very rewarding, this is
a good time to step aside to allow new blood to influence Auckland
Badminton’s continued success and positive progress. I am very confident
that I leave the Association in a much better and more positive position than
when I was elected in 2007.
One final comment – my thanks (a simple word for so much given) to:




the coaches and managers of all our teams;
all the clubs who have supported ABA in 2012;
those volunteers who continually pop up – please don’t stop;
support from Sport Auckland;
10


John, Jack, Emma, Cliff, Ruth, Laureen and ProShop & café parttimers;
and to my Board for all the support you have given me. We have
worked well together.

General Manager’s Report
Overview
Since my arrival which was back in April it has been a busy time dealing with
1. BNZ over the Olympic Games selection process.
2. BNZ handling of disciplinary processes
3. ABAs issues over a social and fun competition.
4. The financials performance was not in a great position after the first 6 months.
I am not going to dwell on this as the points have been raised and discussed at length
and there is a clear understanding of how ABA sees these contentious issues.
However it is a shame there is so much conflict as sport has so much to offer but
continually makes it difficult for itself because of personal agendas and conflicts of
interest.
We don’t need to make it this hard as there are a number of other more important
areas to deal with such as
1. Making the Game fun and encouraging participation
2. Growing the game at all levels from grassroots
3. Developing fun competitions
4. club members to competition
This seems to have been a major issue on the wider scale with other associations but it
seems that we have finally been able to overcome this after the recent BNZ AGM.
After a 24 to 3 vote to have a total independent and external review on the state of the
game in NZ it showed that everyone wants to see the game progress and all personal
agendas are removed. Without this the game would have continued to drift and provide
no direction, confidence or inspiration to players which inturn makes it difficult for clubs
and associations
Whilst there has been friction between associations in the past it shows that
communication and team work can assist us all in reaching the outcomes we are
aiming for.
So it is time for everyone to work together and show that we are a unified sport and a
team to deliver the best outcomes for the game first and ensure that no one thinks that
they are bigger than the game of badminton.
Badminton unfortunately is not a priority sport with SportNZ and will continue to be part
of the minority groups until we start getting performances on the world stage. This
means like all associations we need to work hard to support club and player
development to get athletes onto the International stage by establishing good pathway
models and ensuring there is value in the events they participate in.
ABA and I am sure our clubs like all other associations look forward to the outcome of
this review and hope to see a new direction for the game and its participants.
Financial Report
Financially the association has had its difficulties however finishing the year in a far
stronger position than previous years and better from the 6 month figure we look
forward to a brighter future.
Budgets will look different in the new financial year with some restructuring of the
information. Each area will be responsible for the income and expenditure.
The areas are broken down into
12
1.
2.
3.
4.
Administrative and Stadium
Events which covers all competitions and tournaments
Operations accountable for the Pro Shop and Café
Coaching and Development looking after growth in schools and
Representative which includes performance
5. New Projects looking into ways we can grow memberships, facility usage
and create new programmes that increase participation
The management staff have worked hard on these budgets to ensure that the
association achieves the key outcomes for the association.
Funding
Auckland Badminton continues to work hard on finding funding models to assist with
the associations reliance on income to develop the game and maintain the facility.
Funding from Charitable Trusts continues to get more difficult with new policies around
support, the shrinking lid, greater entities seeking support, economical climate.
With these areas in mind we look at new ways to generate income as we are aware
that unless there a relax of laws and the economy improves this model is not
sustainable.
Tournaments and Competitions
It would be great to be able to discuss all events however as there are so many strong
performaces it was important to particularly mention the following
We saw some great events in 2012 with the Anugral NZ Masters Kiwi cup in March.
This was well organised and supported by the committee and the staff of ABA. Many
Thanks to our sponsors such as Best Western Presidents Hotel, RSL NZ Limited and
Xtreme Sports who made a great contribution to see that the event was successful.
Feedback was positive from and players who particularly enjoyed the form that the
competition operated under so we really look forward to continuing this bi annually in
2014.
Auckland International in June sponsored by SOTX was another great event for ABA as
it provided the opportunity to see international players come to Auckland and compete.
This will help increase the profile and exposure of Badminton but also bring competition
in a different format and provide strong competition to our players.
Alpers Lodge NZ Nationals also highlighted some great results with Auckland players
winning a number of the events. Again thanks to Alpers Lodge for their going support to
Auckland Badminton.
Finally congratulations to Michelle Chan for herwinning performance in Feb at the 2012
Oceania Championship and it was certainly great to have her home for Wisden Cup in
August.
I had the opportunity to travel with the teams to Wisden and Slazenger in Waikato
being manger for both teams. It was an enjoyable time but busy. Our players did us
proud with the Slazenger team winning their tournament and gaining promotion to
Wisden in 2013. The Wisden team performed strongly with Alan Chan back home as
well as Michelleas mentioned. The opportunity to see these athletes compete and the
young to learn was a great opportunity for Auckland. The Wisden team just missed out
13
in the final against Waikato but with a very young side the future looks bright for
Auckland so look forward to next season.
Coaching
Tom Armstrong joined the association in April/ May and brings experience and
knowledge to the association.

players.


organisations in Auckland.

Sport Auckland/Sparc. Long term funding of the primary school racqueteers
program


these academic institutions to create pathways for badminton players competing
internationally.
Club visits
Over the last 12 months I have visited all 32 divisions of the clubs in the Association.
On many of these occasions I was with Cliff Freeman when we presented a ‘Power
Point’ presentation about our sport as we see it. This was a very interesting exercise
with many club members “just wanting to play badminton” rather than having an
interest in the future of the sport.
14
Conclusion
I would like to thank the staff and the Board of the Association who have worked very
hard this year as a team to drive change, create a team working environment and have
a ‘can do’ attitude. I congratulate the players who have achieved competitive success
in the last 12 months and those players who just enjoy playing the game. I have
enjoyed watching you enjoying badminton at all levels of the sport.
I particularly would like to thank the numerous volunteers who have given up their time
to help me personally and the Association. Without you we would not have one.

Senior Representative
This year has been a very good seaon for Senior Representative Teams, even
though our Senior 1 team missed out by the narrowest of margins in Wisden
Cup. 2 other National titles were won with the Slazenger Cup team being
promoted to division 1 and our u23 team were National Champions.
For 2012 Auckland entered one team in each of the divisions one to four. A
division five team was not entered this year due to lack of numbers and
commitment from players the previous year. This looks like continuing for next
season with 4 senior teams entered, with 2 teams in Wisden Cup one in
Division 3 and one in Division 4.
Trainings or match play were offered to Division 3 and 4 teams the week
before ties. It was fairly well attended; we will look into whether to hold them in
2013. Training for the Wisden and Slazenger Cup team started 10-12 weeks
before the competition with mixed attendance rates. The timeslot of Sunday
mornings was partly to blame according to players. We will review the training
and try to plan better for 2013.
Our Wisden cup team was again coached by Li Feng, assisted by myself and
Henry Tam we brought in 2 players who are based overseas, Alan Chan and
Michelle Chan, who are Auckland players who were able to come out a week
or so before to train and spar with the squad. The Wisden team put up a great
fight, and up against a lot of hardships, missing players through injury and
suspension, we came within 1 point of winning Wisden Cup but came off in
second place to Waikato. There was an excellent team feel this year within the
group and though we were bitterly disappointed not to clinch the trophy, I feel
we accounted for ourselves greatly, and played with a great spirit, and came
out as the morale winners, against a Waikato side which once again pushed
the hard against the boundary of fair play and competitveness. The Slazenger
cup team was a ridiculously young team who was coached by myself and
assisted greatly by Henry Tam who stepped in to add great value to the team.
The teams average age was under 18 with only one player above 21! With an
inexperienced team, the players had no fear and gave everything, edging out
Waitakere on countback in their closest game with a never say die attitude,
and going on to win the rest of their games comfortably, winning Slazenger
Cup and with it Promotion to Wisden Cup for 2013.
17
Division Three performed very well, missing out on finishing top in the last tie
of the season coming second to Wellington. The team had a massively spread
out schedule, traveling out of Auckland for every fixture, up to Whangerai,
across to Napier and down to Wellington to name but a few venues for the
team this year. A big thank you to Robbie Thackham for organizing and being
team 3 captain. Team Four performed well coming home middle of the field
with some young players. Thanks To Brian for captaining and organizing the
team, I know they had a lot of trouble finding players some weekends,
especially with a lot of the young players struggling for time off school on long
trips.
Auckland U23 team competed in the U23 National champs at North Harbour
putting in a great effort winning the national title with 6-5 victories in every
match, including a comeback from many match points down verses
Canterbury and Waikato. The team performed excellently and it was a great
group of players to work with. The team was coached by me and we had two
trainings before the competition which were well attended. There early in the
season date for the competition caught a few players and coaches out so will
look to better plan for next year. Having a 5x5 team was also tough to make
sure everyone played. Depending on number I would recommend only a 4x4
team.

Junior Rep
2012 has been another busy year for the Junior Committee and for Auckland’s
junior representative players. There were new Badminton NZ sponsored
circuits for U15 and U17 tournaments and many of our players enjoyed a
share of the end-of-year prize money for these events. 2012 also saw the
inauguration of official U13 events (including U13 Nationals), changes to team
eligibility for U15/U17 Nationals and a changed schedule for U19 Nationals.
This has meant the majority of our junior players began their extended 2012
season in February and continued training and playing tournaments right
through to October.
Auckland was represented by 11 junior teams in 2012 (2 U19 teams, 4 U17
teams, 4 U15 teams and 1 U13 team). Our junior teams won two National age
group team events at U19 and U17 level and three North Island team titles at
U19, U17 and U15 level. Many of our players also won individual national titles
in their respective age group events. The overall outcome of team and
individual tournaments in 2012 by our junior players has been an outstanding
success. The on-court playing success was supported superbly by the
coaches, team managers and parent managers that accompanied them to
Palmerston North, Nelson and Wellington.
The 2012 Junior Committee worked cohesively and efficiently to plan,
organise and assist the running of our junior events. Daniel Lee from Pacific
Badminton Club and Jack Ngametua ran another successful junior interclub
season running for 14 weeks. Jack also managed all of the schools events
and together with the Schools Programme developed by Cliff Freeman, ABA
organised badminton was made widely available to junior players in both clubs
and schools.
The Junior Committee also received excellent contribution and input
throughout the year from Laureen Cooper, the ABA Junior Co-ordinator and
from Chin Fong from College Rifles Club (who was the official referee for all
our junior tournaments), Robert Hillier (with his knowledge of Tournament
Software) from LEPJBC and May Tang who all helped with the busy 2012
tournament schedule. Cookie Time was our major junior fundraising exercise
in 2012 and thank-you to Cecilia Tong from Griffen Park Junior Club for coordinating this during the year. The Junior Committee also enjoyed the
continued services of Barry Stevens and Sue Smith, whose combined
knowledge of all things badminton has been very much appreciated.
I would like to give a special thank-you to our 2012 coaches and team
managers who accompanied the U15/U17 teams to Palmerston North in July
19
and then gave up another week of their time in October to be with the teams
again for Nationals. All of them made huge personal concessions to their
work, studies and even their own health and well-being to coach and manage
our teams and we cannot thank them enough for the time and effort that have
contributed to our junior programme in 2012.
With Auckland Badminton appointing a new General Manager and a new
Coaching Manager during 2012, a challenging year was indeed expected and
the Junior Committee wishes to thank John McGregor and Tom Armstrong for
their patience and understanding in regards to the needs of our junior players
and acknowledging that the continued success and growth of badminton in
Auckland starts at this level and a positive exposure to badminton at this age
will greatly increase the likelihood of future involvement in the sport.
As always we thank the generosity of our sponsors and the work of the many
volunteers who have contributed immensely to another highly successful and
satisfying year for Auckland Junior Badminton, and finally a BIG thank-you to
all the junior players (and their parents) who have supported Auckland
Badminton in 2012 by being members of their local clubs, participating in our
training programmes and entering our organised events and tournaments.

Coaching Report
This season has been a very busy year for coaching at the association, with a
lot of new faces, ideas and initiatives having started this year or being put in
place for next year. It was my first season here as coaching manager, and I
hope I at least matched the standards set by my predecessor. The role has
changed greatly from when I was first approached to take on the role, to new
management and where we are today, but hopefully we can bring about
positive results for coaching and playing development in the Association.
Schools
Secondary schools have been utilising coaching for there Year 12 and 13
students for NZEA Physical Education though I believe the number of schools
taking this up is down on last year. Most schools have been given 10
sessions of coaching focusing on the tactical side of badminton then
completing a practical assessment at the end. Schools that completed NCEA
with Auckland Badminton are: Howick College, Pakuranga College, Auckland
Girls Grammar Grammer, St Cuthbert’s, McAuley High. There has also been a
high demand for coaching of secondary school teams and I have recruited in
other coaches to help with the demand from secondary schools. Coaches who
have assisted in schools coaching are Robbie Thackham, Michael Rippon,
Brent Miller and Anush Pandian. Schools taking up coaching for their teams
were St Kentigerns (intermediate), St Cuthberts, Diocesan school for girls,
Sacred Heart, Auckland Girls Grammar, Auckland Normal Intermediate,
Kadimah College, Parnell College, Western Springs, McCauley High, Our lady
Scared Heart and Mt Roskil Grammar and Intermediate. We are looking at
creating more strategic partnerships with schools, and creating more
opportunities for pupils to access badminton in schools. I have been trying to
get more sessions into these schools, using all times in the day (before,
during, lunch and after) to try and best get badminton in to schools. Next year
we are looking at splitting the regions into targeted regions, that we can then
better manage and target our resources to gain more specific and positive
results from our school programs. This will involve more contract work for
coaches
21
Squads
Our elite squad this year has been taken by Li Feng, out at her facility in the
East of the City. The squad have been less than committed this year and we
have had numerous withdrawals or poor commitment to training. Originally,
this can partly be blamed to coaching management structure around the elite
squad, with myself not being totally sure of my role within the High
Performance structure and the sudden change of management within the
organisation. As the season has gone on and I have been able to work with li
Feng, and I have now taken over the running/overseaing of the elite program.
Li Feng will still take most of the on court sessions, while I will oversee all
training structures, tournament planning and off court work. We have had
meeting with players at the start of term 4 to highlight the issues we have had
this term, and where we want to be starting next year after the summer break.
Players have been made aware of the commitments required to make the Elite
squad in Auckland, so we expect a smaller but more committed squad next
year.
Outside of our elite squad, there have been some changes to the make up of
our development squads, and will be some slight changes going into next
year. There has been and introduction of a fourth tier squad, to specifically
cater for the 7-12 year olds who show potential to train and play more. This is
in line with a new focus of u13 events that have started this year by BNZ,
including an u13 circuit and national championships. This is currently called
the development squad, in the New Year (feb/,march 2013) will be renamed
the Futures Squad. We would encourage all clubs to put forward their top
young players to attend this squad, as this will be the first step on our new
Development program that the ABA will run. Our current Auckland badminton
Squad which runs on a Wednesday has been very successful this year with a
steady squad who have been working well. From February/march next year
this squad shall be know as the developing squad and will train twice a week.
The Junior high Performance squad which runs twice a week on a Tuesday
and Thursday has been running very well also, with the players understanding
that they are in the training squad to work hard and improve. This squad will
also be renamed as of next year to the Emerging Squad and will continue to
have 2 court sessions a week. Next year we hope to have the squads set up
and ready to go form the start of the school year and create a positive training
environment with a clear linear progression through the development phases,
22
making a clear and transparent pathway. We would ask that all club support
this pathway, and promote its goals. The program doesn’t look to take players
away form clubs, but help the, in their development which will ultimately help
the clubs.
Coach education
This year being my first year in the position, my coach education priorities
were in collecting data, and attempting to update the Coaching Register,
which proved a lot harder than you’d think. We ran one level 1 Coaching
course which was run at capacity of 15 coaches. We had an excellent mix of
players, young coaches, and teachers with a limited badminton background,
which meant for a really excellent mix of experiences which I hope they all
benefited from. Jeff Mitchell from GACU and Sport Auckland came in to
deliver some of the theory for the course, which he related excellently to the
group and their different backgrounds. I have been in regular contact with Jeff
regarding our future Coach Development plans and he has been very helpful
in us moving forward in this area.
We also ran 2 new Raqueteers Courses out of Mt Roskill Grammar, in line
with Cliff Freemans Just Smash it program. This attracted older players from
the Grammar school with the opportunity to qualify themselves as Raqueteers
Coaches and help deliver sessions to the younger Mt Roskill schools. We had
a total of 22 Coaches attend the 2 sessions with 90% passing. They have now
been fed back into the system to be mentored by more senior coaches. This
has been very successful with some of the coaches, as with any program we
have had some drop out and poor commitment from some of the others, but
on the whole it has been a positive project.
Badminton New Zealand will be rolling out a new coach development
framework over the summer, with a Northern Region update expected late
November in the form of a seminar run by the Coaching Director from BNZ.
Depending the outcome of this project, will possibly have a big influence on
our own coach development plans for 2013, including new coach education
modules and clearer pathways for coaches.

Coach Licencing
In one major change planned for 2013, the management team has decided to
licence the coaches that wish to use the Gillies Avenue facility for individual or
‘private’ coaching. Two meetings were held in consultation with current
coaches, so we could be as transparent with the process as possible. We
discussed a number of areas needed to be addressed, and why we felt the
need for licencing.

to support badminton and protect the players who were receiving
coaching.
Ensure that there was a consistent model to the development of
the players
Assist in ensuring the association maintained a sustainable model
to continue to support and develop the game
Ensure that courts were free to players for recreational
participation
st
As of January 1 2013 Auckland Badminton Association will be ensuring that
there is criteria around coaching within the facility to ensure there is balance
around the use of the hall and consistent coaching practices for players to
develop and identify clear pathways. Coaches will be offered the chance to
apply for licences, filling in an application form to be assessed and processed
by the coaching manager. They will have the opportunity to become licenced
and accredited, or licenced and non-accredited. Accredited will have the
opportunity to integrate more with the Associations coach development plan,
including the taking of representative teams. In return the coaches will be
offered a reduction in their licence fee, and constant association support. Nonaccredited will pay a licence fee, and an agreed court rate, but not be
associated with the ABA. We are also looking at putting something together
for younger or emerging coaches who don’t yet see the need to buy a licence
to nurture our coaching talent.
Holiday programs
Holiday programs have been a mixed success this year. From the first camp,
which was not well advertised and happened the week after I arrived to the
latest one, we have seen a marked rise in numbers to us nearly being at
capacity for the October camps. We have engaged with YMCA Activities
24
Company and are trying to fit some badminton onto their holiday programs for
future holiday periods. The holiday programs have also been used well for to
give young and new coaches the opportunity to gain experience or to do some
of their level 1 log hours under the supervision of experienced coaches. We do
have some issues regarding other coaches running programs at the same
time, which has meant we have now shifted our focus on just providing holiday
camps for beginners, and younger intermediates.
Raqueteers/Fundamental skills coaching
The Raqueteers program in conjunction with Kiwisport funding has been run
very successfully this yeah, albeit on small scale, with a limited reach into the
regions schools. Laureen Cooper has been our main deliverer of our
raqueteers program, but we have used many other coaches throughout the
season to help with the work load. Our coaches have received excellent
feedback form schools and are performing on the whole to very high
standards. For 2013 we will be zoning off the Auckland region and using
certain coaches to target areas. This will focus the resources we have to try
and increase our partner ships in targeted schools to create a permanent
presence in schools, rather than visiting only once a term, which will lead to
the establishment of badminton as a regular sport in each school.
Auckland Junior Representative Trials
Trials this year were held before I arrived a the association but after receiving
feedback form players parent and coaches it has been decided to change the
format of junior trials for 2013. We will still have the 2 weekends of trials on the
Saturdays in March, however only enough players to fill the teams will be
selected, but not into specific teams. There will then be a follow up
training/trials days with all representative coaches involved to select the
specific teams. This will then hopefully move us away from the problems of
previous years where players felt they weren’t given a long enough
opportunity to prove themselves.

Masters Report
The Future
This year has been the first with no Masters Committee, as such. Instead,
Yvonne and I joined with John and Jack, from the office, in organising all
things Masters.
The ABA Board are now demanding that all segments of Auckland Badminton
must at least break-even.
Because Masters events are no longer run by a Masters Committee, any
profits from organised events are now eaten up by the ABA staff who run them
and are not credited as Masters income. The Masters must now find enough
income to pay for all Masters activities such as Inter-assn entry fees, shuttles,
court hire, either from you the players, or from fundraising.
So as you can see, if all things remaining equal, there is likely to be no travel
subsidies and an increase of somewhere near $20 per team member in
registration fees next year. Come along to the ABA AGM on the 22nd of
November to have your say about these likely increases.
The Past
Inter Association
There were 6 Masters, 4 Veterans and 2 Supervets teams selected for the
North Island Inter Association competitions this year. We have entered the
same number of teams for next year.
The No 1 Supervets team again won their competition—congratulations to
them.
While no team was relegated in Masters, a couple were lucky not to go down.
In Vets the No 2 and No 4 teams were relegated, which means that we will
have a team in each division next year.
Box Doubles
We again held this new format competition in February and with the feedback
we received from it,
another competition was held in August. Both events were very well
27
supported. There is another
competition planned for next February and
while it is again open to all grades, whether affiliated or not,
Masters players will again be given first priority to enter. Results from this
competition help the selectors determine the Masters Inter-Assn teams.
So get your entries in when the forms come out next month.
Auckland Masters Champs
This was held once again in July.
The tournament seemed to go well and had a good response from the players.
We had a good entry (about 90 players) with a mix from around the Auckland
region and Northland, though some age groups needed to be combined. The
number of entries was helped by Auckland Assn players being offered free
entry – we had hoped that this would get them to enter multiple events,
though this didn’t work so well – if we do this again next year it will be 2nd
event free. Thanks to Yvonne and Jack for organising the draw
and running the tournament and to John for organising Prince who provided all
the prizes.
Kiwi Cup
This was held in March and was a great success. Originally it was planned to
hold this again next year and then every second year from then on. However,
due to unforeseen circumstances, there will now be no tournament in 2013.
I hope you all have a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. See you
all on the courts in 2013.

Development Report
They key priority for badminton is to grow its base and to do this it must adapt
to an ever changing environment in the schools and the community. In 2011 /
2012 some key projects have allowed us to develop a model to ensure that we
can adapt to that environment and expand our numbers.
Schools as Learning Academies
We have maintained our after schools program and taken it to a new level by
developing a new model at the Mt Roskill Grammar School cluster which once
finalised can be rolled out across Auckland. This model is based on three
simple parts.
1. Participation and Introduction – getting students to flow through the
school and start the sport
started off with road shows and in school coaching programs.
2. Competition and After School Clubs – to learn how to play and then
take part
3. Club – feeding into our local clubs and higher level interclub
competition
It means growing the learning and knowledge throughout the whole school as
one big badminton academy not just in the Grammar School but also in the
Primary and Intermediate Schools. Coaches trained in the Grammar School
feed back into the primary and intermediate schools.

Growing Our Casual Base
Our sport is way too small to survive long term, we are planning to start free
lunchtime participation in schools we visit which has huge potential to grow
our base registration which can be very attractive to sponsors and funders. It
also allows us to grow and promote to this base to grow into paid activity such
as after school play and competitions and to our clubs and drastically grow our
casual registered base which we can then divert into clubs and pay to play
after school activity.
Club Development
● We have handed out thousands of flyers promoting our clubs at events
through the year attended by thousands of people including: Playing in the
Streets, Council Community Fairs, Kiwisport in Schools etc
● We have new club web profiles, that can be searched for by name, are
listed by area and by time and day or used as miniature web pages by clubs.
They are successful in attracting new members to clubs.
● Funding – we support applications by clubs to funding agencies which given
our strong relationship with these groups help contribute to a high success
rate, our status as preferred sport by Sport Auckland also helps.
● Relationships – Auckland badmintons strong relationships with schools,
council sport Auckland is bringing new funds to our area. These new projects
are now allowing us to target community groups and get them to join up with
our clubs.
● Media – we are now building through Connect 2 Sport and Green
Prescription projects opportunities to promote more effectively in cultural
media and general media.
● Club Assistance - we are always available to help any club with the following
and have done so successfully in the recent past – funding applications and
plans, volunteer recruitment, strategic planning, hall hire negotiations,
30
accessing cheaper hall hire or shuttles, council negotiations, accessing
coaches, designing coaching programs, promotions, designing brochures,
amending on line profiles, facebook promotions, links to schools, links to
community groups, meeting targeted membership goals or just listening.
● Club School Partnerships and Performance Clubs – we will be working with
clubs to not only form partnerships with schools but create a higher level of
performance in selected clubs that are keen to develop into semi professional
structures to tap into the growth potential in schools.
● Facebook – we have now discovered from Badminton NZ how to transfer
our facebook page to a like page so that we can expand our 5000 members
and have a page more appropriate for our size of organisation.
Promotion
The Kiwi Cup provided a rare opportunity for media exposure including time
on Murray Deaker’s Program (thanks to Richard Purser), Maori TV (thanks to
Liz Brown for being interviewed), The Aucklander and WTV.
We have also developed new brochures now developed for all schools
targeted at primary / intermediate and secondary schools.
We have also done a lot of work behind the scenes on the website which is on
going to improve its functionality.
Funding
We have secured this year over $190,000 in new funding from various
sources which provides the sport with capacity that is not paid for out of its
base funds but allows it to expand to the point where it will not need funding to
do this. It also allows us to run new programs in schools and communities
where we are heavily promoting our clubs.
Connect 2 Sport Program - $30,000 towards salary costs plus $12,500 to
develop the sport
Funding from Charitable Trusts – over $100,000
Green Prescription - $5,000
Kiwisport - $38,000 growing our presence in schools.
After Schools Program – new income of $23,000 profit of $12,000.
In addition we have secured $79,000 from ASB Community trust to start
2012/2013 which to put in perspective is the same total funding received for a
better than average year from 2006 to 2010.
31
Funding Support
There is a misconception that affiliation money pays staff it does not. Many
staff salaries are either totally funded by this combination or at least half
funded by them. All money from memberships from clubs goes to Badminton
NZ so ABA does not get or use any income from clubs to support salaries,
grow the game or run competitions. All this must come from the stadium, shop
sales, funding or project funding from outside sources.
Growing Communities and Competitions
This year has seen us expand into a number of new communities the future
hear lies in large cultural tournaments. We are also well underway with
planning for brand new school and senior community competitions next year.
1. New Indian community out West
2. NZ Chinese Community now based in our hall
3. NZ Tamil Society
4. Young Muslim Women's Association
University Badminton
We have grown new competitions at Auckland University including a new
interfaculty competition paid for by Auckland University.
Uni Mates – new competition run successfully at Unitec we are now expanding
in AU and tapping into a council contact who has contact with over 40,000
international students.
New University clubs – now being set up at Unitec with the Unitec Chinese
Student Community and Unitec’s support.
We are also talking to Unitec about more coaching and including new courses
and coach development into secondary and intermediate schools as part of an
integrated school and sport program. The future lies in integrating sport and
education and getting badminton into the sporting curriculum in schools and
colleges at all levels.

2012 Interclub Report
Participation
2012 had a mix year of teams entered into the competition with total entry of
64 teams entered a decrease of 8 teams from the previous year. The
competition started Monday 30th of April and ran until 27th of
September.
The Structure was reversed compared to previous years. We played the
doubles competition first and finish with the singles interclub. We
catered for the singles players in the first half of the year by running a
singles ladder competition and vice versa for the second half of the
year a doubles competition.
There seems to be more players wanting to play doubles only. Maybe it is
something that the clubs may look at and have 2 half years of doubles
competition.
Out of 19 senior clubs, only 10 clubs put teams into the competition
throughout the whole year, quite disappointing. For us to run a really
competitive competition we will need the support of all our clubs.
The winners and runners up of this years competition goes to the following

Secondary Schools 2011 Report
Participation
2012 had a total entry of 298 teams an increase of 4 teams from the previous year with
over 34 schools entered into the competition. The competition started Monday
30th of April and ran until 27th of September.
The Structure was similar to previous years with all the games being played weekly.
Two separate competitions were held first ten weeks being the competitive teams and
the second ten weeks of the competition being the social grades.
Two venues were used, the Central and another in the Eastern zone.
All the games in the central were held at the Auckland Badminton Association and the
Eastern Zone at Lloyd Elsmore Badminton Club.
There were 32 grades in the competition. Each team consists of 4 players and 1 or 2
reserve players.
This year there were about 1500 total players playing badminton. Out of these players
480 players were females players.
Defaults
Most matches were scheduled to avoid defaults.
I would like to thank the teachers and team captains who cooperated to facilitate this.
Thanks
My thanks to teachers, team captains and to parents help without whom the
organization of Secondary schools competition would be possible.
My special thanks to Tony Griffen at Lloyd Elsmore Badminton Club who put so much
time and effort in helping out with the organisation of the Eastern Zone competition
