As well, the Department hosts the Community Registration at our facility to allow all groups to show case their programs and allow residents and newcomers in our community an opportunity to gather information on programs, meet program leaders and have a one stop shop registration for all your Fall/Winter recreation needs. Each organization will conduct their own registration under one roof. This is planned for September 10Th. The Department registration will take place on Sept 20th closer to the beginning of our swimming lessons. We hope this will give everyone an opportunity to see their other activity schedules and then register for a swimming lesson that will fit for your family. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many volunteers in our community that allow for the many programs to be available in our community and provide us with the details so that we can pass the information along to you. Their valuable knowledge, skills and time needs to be acknowledged with a huge THANK YOU!” Our cancellation line for storm closures will be used once again this season (623-2333). Please check the line if you are unsure if a program will be running during inclement weather. The staff will be making a decision based on the weather information provided by Environment Canada and putting cancellation on the line ASAP as well as using our Facebook page and the local radio stations. We are always looking to meet the needs of our patrons and welcome your comments and suggestions, as they are invaluable. You can contact our Department in person at our office at 94 General Manson Way, by phone at 623-2300 or email us at miramichirecreation@miramichi. org. Your comments and concerns are logged, investigated and used to help us improve our services. You will receive a response from a member of the staff so long as you leave your contact information. Thank you for taking time to explore your options for your 60 minutes of physical activity most days which will have you realizing the health benefits quickly! With a successful previous year we are thrilled to be continuing to offer Life Saving Sport Fundamentals and Assistant Instructor along with other great programs to meet our community needs. This year there are new public swims added on School Professional Learning Days along with some great special event swims including Lifeguard Appreciation Day, March Cake Break, and the Santa Swim. Also please check out our March Break Camp and learn the duties of the Lifeguard. The Recreation Department continues to offer the Lifesaving Society’s Swim for Life Learn to swim program. We encourage all children and adults to take lessons as swimming is a very important life skill everyone should have (Remember Adults, it’s never too late to learn). As affiliates of the Lifesaving Society the City of Miramichi continues to work on its contributions in teaching our populations to swim to survive in order to help keep our drowning rates down especially where we are surrounded by the Beautiful Miramichi River and open water activities are more popular today than ever. “The Aquatic Staff are eager to welcome you back indoors. They have been keeping up with their qualifications as Lifeguards and Instructors. We hope to see you at the pool for a fun, safe enjoyable experience.” 15 Golden Hawk Instructional Swim Program September 24 – December 2, 2016 Program Day Time Tots Monday 5:30pm-6:00pm Thursday 5:30pm-6:00pm Saturday 11:00am-11:30am Preschool 1 Monday 6:00pm-6:30pm Tuesday 5:30pm-6:00pm Preschool 2 Monday 6:30pm-7:00pm Thursday 6:00pm-6:30pm Saturday 12:00pm-12:30pm Preschool 3 Tuesday 6:00pm-6:30pm Thursday 6:30pm-7:00pm Preschool 4 Monday 7:00pm-7:30pm Thursday 7:00pm-7:30pm Preschool 4/5 Tuesday 7:00pm-7:30pm Saturday 11:30am-12:00pm Preschool 5 Tuesday 6:30pm-7:00pm Beginner Swim 1 Monday 5:30pm-6:30pm Swimmer 1 Monday 6:30pm-7:30pm Thursday 5:30pm-6:30pm Saturday 11:00am-12:00pm Swimmer 2 Tuesday 5:30pm-6:30pm Saturday 11:00am-12:00pm 12:00pm-1:00pm Swimmer 3 Monday 5:30pm-6:30pm Thursday 6:30pm-7:30pm Swimmer 4 Monday 6:30pm-7:30pm Saturday 12:00pm-1:00pm Swimmer 5 Tuesday 6:30pm-7:30pm Saturday 12:00pm-1:00pm Swimmer 7/8 Sunday 7:00pm-8:00pm Swimmer 9 Saturday 2:00pm-3:00pm Adult Swimmer Sunday 6:00pm-7:00pm Adult Fitness Sunday 6:00pm-7:00pm Swimmer Bronze Medallion Saturday 2:00pm-4:00pm Bronze Star Saturday 3:00pm-4:00pm Instructional Swim Fees: Resident Preschool & Tots $ 35.00 Swimmer 1 to 6 $ 50.00 Swimmer 7 to 9 $ 60.00 Adult Swimmer $ 60.00 Bronze Star $60.00 Bronze Medallion $125.00 Bronze Cross $100.00 Fitness Swimmer $ 60.00 Lifesaving Sport $ 60.00 NLS $200.00 Non-resident $ 60.00 $ 75.00 $85.00 $ 85.00 $ 85.00 $150.00 $125.00 $ 85.00 $ 85.00 $225.00 MVHS Instructional Swim Program September 24 – December 2, 2016 Program Day Time Tots Monday 6:00pm-6:30pm Thursday 6:00pm-6:30pm Saturday 10:00am-10:30am Preschool 1 Monday 6:00pm-6:30pm Tuesday 6:00pm-6:30pm Saturday 10:30am-11:00am Preschool 2 Monday 6:30pm-7:00pm Tuesday 6:00pm-6:30pm Saturday 10:00am-10:30am Preschool 3 Monday 6:30pm-7:00pm Tuesday 6:30pm-7:00pm Saturday 10:30am-11:00am Preschool 4 Tuesday 6:30pm-7:00pm Thursday 6:00pm-6:30pm Saturday 11:00am-11:30am Preschool 5 Thursday 6:30pm-7:00pm Saturday 11:30am-12:00pm Beginner Swim 1 Monday 6:00pm-7:00pm Swimmer 1 Tuesday 6:00pm-7:00pm Thursday 7:00pm-8:00pm Saturday 11:00am-12:00pm Swimmer 2 Monday 6:00pm-7:00pm Tuesday 6:00pm-7:00pm Swimmer 3 Thursday 7:00pm-8:00pm Saturday 11:00am-12:00pm Swimmer 4 Monday 7:00pm-8:00pm Saturday 10:00am-11:00am Swimmer 5 Monday 7:00pm-8:00pm Tuesday 7:00pm-8:00pm Saturday 12:00pm-1:00pm Swimmer 6 Tuesday 7:00pm-8:00pm Saturday 12:00pm-1:00pm Bronze Medallion Thursday 6:00pm-8:00pm Bronze Cross Sunday 6:00pm-8:00pm Lifesaving Sport Sunday 5:00pm-6:00pm Fitness Swimmer Sunday 6:00pm-7:00pm Fall Swim Registration Tuesday, September 20, 2016 from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm in the Teen Room at the Golden Hawk Recreation Center. With some 500 fatalities annually, drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional death among Canadians under the age of 60 and is surpassed by only motor vehicle collisions and poisoning. The role Lifeguards/Instructors Play: Much of what a Lifeguard does goes un-noticed by the public, but Lifeguards are highly trained and certified in preventative measures and emergency response in an aquatic environment. They are water rescue professionals trained in emergency care. Lifeguards prevent accidents and are trained to spot potential trouble and intervene before it becomes life-threatening. They identify hazards and determine safe practices. They educate the public about the hazards and risks associated with aquatic activities and how to be water smart. Swim Instructors on the other hand are highly visible to the public but many people view them as providing recreation rather than providing a life-saving skill. Swimming is a life skill that all children need to learn if any meaningful attempt is to be made to eliminate drowning. Teaching an individual the essentials needed to survive an unexpected fall into deep water is an important first step to being safe around water. Swim instructors are highly trained and certified to deliver the swim instruction program to participants which includes education on how to be safe in an aquatic environment. Lifeguards and Swim Instructors are equipped to deal with injuries and medical emergencies and are certified in Standard Workplace First Aid and CPR/AED. One person can be both a Lifeguard and Swim Instructor. 1:00-2:00pm join us for some dancing fun with Aqua fitness for all ages 2:00-3:00pm Scavenger hunt 3:00-4:00pm Diving Contest/Relay races 3:00-4:00pm Rescue Demonstrations preformed by Lifeguards, with participation from participants attending the swim. 4:00-5:00pm- Fun Swim 5:00-6:00pm- Class room session: The importance of learning to swim, How to become a Lifeguard/Instructor, testimonials from staff, activity sheets.
