At twilight, the mountain view
fades and the Jacobsons and
their guests gravitate toward
the massive fireplace that
warms the great room.
W
ith a building site that offers
jaw-dropping views, Sandra and Richard Jacobson
knew their mountain home had to be a
showstopper. Working with architect
Jerry Locati, builder SBC Construction,
Montana Timbers and interior designer
Robin Strangis, the couple planned a
home sure to wow visitors. “We also
wanted the house to have a welcoming,
warm feeling,” Sandra says.
The Jacobsons chose this property
in Montana’s Yellowstone Club, a private community with its own ski slopes,
golf course, lodge and restaurants. “The
view sold the building site for us,” Sandra recalls. To make the home warm and
welcoming, the team specified a mix of
wood and stone inside and out.
Vaulted ceilings bring drama to the
great room and kitchen, where recycled
beams add character. The kitchen pulls
visitors in. “We wanted a large kitchen
because when we’re entertaining, everyone gravitates to the kitchen,” Sandra
explains. Sandra and Strangis worked
together to create ample storage in the
kitchen and butler’s pantry. “I love my
kitchen,” Sandra says. “We’ve even had
cooking classes in the kitchen when
we’ve had out-of-town relatives visiting.”
For Strangis, who owns Loring Interiors in Minneapolis, the home was a
blank canvas on which to create a modern
Western look. Clean-lined furniture and
sleek, motorized window shades allow the
view and the couple’s eclectic art to shine.
Sandra and Richard plan to enjoy
the house for many years to come. They
hope an elevator to help them get around
and a large guest room that could accommodate live-in help will help them age
in place. For now, though, the home is

the destination for large parties and small
family get-togethers. “We spend the
Christmas holidays, part of the ski season
and the entire summer at the house,” Sandra says.
The Jacobsons treat their guests to
accommodations with unique style. “One
guest bedroom is like the mountains in
spring,” Strangis says. That room features

light, bright colors. The adjacent guest
room has a Tyrolean feel with Austrian
furniture and a snowflake-patterned rug.
The couple outfitted another guest
room with faux log walls and dubbed it
the “Durango Kid Room,” as a tribute
to the Western movies Richard enjoyed
growing up in Hardin, Montana. “Those
memories are very special to him,” Sandreamhomeshowcasemag.com
dra says. “We even have a Durango Kid
movie poster in the room.”
Although the cool climate keeps
them from using the outdoor living spaces often, they do enjoy the patio’s hot
tub and the many places to relax inside
the home. “Every spot in the house has a
wonderful view and is very inviting and
comfortable,” Sandra says.
