ECONOMY
Discussions about the state of Canada’s economy often revolve around the
resource sector – particularly when commodity values are high -- and there is
no overlooking our leadership in everything from oil and natural gas to minerals
and agriculture.
But it would be difficult to discuss the overall strength of Canada’s economy
without including its manufacturers.
According to Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, every dollar in valueadded output by a manufacturer will generate an estimated $3.05 in total
economic activity. This is larger than the economic multiplier provided by any
business sector. Manufacturing is also the source of 2/3 of our exports of goods
and services, and 3/4 of the research and development in the private sector as
a whole.
As Canada emerges from the depths of the recession, the business of
making goods is also in full swing. Manufacturing sales reached $49.9 billion
in December, marking increases in 12 of 21 measured industries. Seven sub
sectors climbed to levels that haven’t been seen since before the recession. In
2011, overall manufacturing sales reached $571 billion, up 7.8% over 2010,
with some of the highest sales in petroleum and coal products, primary metals,
machinery and transportation equipment.
At Wajax Industrial Components, we are proud to serve a growing list of
manufacturers behind these numbers, and we have profiled many of their
businesses in this edition of Connections Magazine.
For example, Linamar (p. 10) is easily counted as one of the nation’s economic
success stories. The global enterprise has positioned itself to play an ever-larger
role in the automotive industry as its customers continue to outsource more
business. SMAG Industries is building a global business with Insulated Concrete
Forms (p. 22); Niedner’s hoses have been used to fight some of the world’s

Wajax branches supply a wide array of products across Southern Ontario,
but the real strengths emerge by combining their specialties

Southern Ontario businesses turn to Wajax
Industrial Components for a wide array
of products. But Regional Manager Troy
Miller knows that the area’s branches can
do much more than fill a typical purchase
order. The real strengths emerge when there
are opportunities to combine multiple
product lines and expertise.
“Nobody represents the 3 lines of
business that we do including bearings
and power transmission, hydraulics, and
process equipment,” Miller explains, as
the road warrior makes a brief stop in his
Mississauga office. “We want [customers]
to know about the products we offer. But
just as important, we want them to be aware
of our services including repair capabilities
and our extensive engineering services.”
Put another way, companies in the heart
of the region’s manufacturing belt can meet
a long list of needs with a single call.
While the network of branches enjoys
the competitive advantages that come
with extensive inventories and competitive
prices, it can also help to lower a customer’s
administrative costs by reducing the
number of invoices. “If you’re going to
buy your bearings from one company,
your hydraulics from another, and your
processing equipment from another, you’re
really dividing your spending power,” he
adds.

Most important, product specialists
are able to reach out to fellow members
of the Wajax team, combining the knowhow of every individual group.
The Concord branch, for example,
includes hydraulic support teams and
engineers who can complete everything
from a pump repair to the design and
fabrication of hydraulic power units. A
single call to that group could streamline
an entire process, rather than requiring
separate trips to an engineering firm
and fabrication facility. “We can design
it, engineer it, stamp it, build it, install
it, and do Preventive Maintenance with
our technical sales team that’s out on the
road,” he says.
The Mississauga branch, meanwhile,
hosts process engineers and the related
product inventories that they need to
provide the same level of service offered
in hydraulics.
“We use a term called ‘multidisciplinary
solutions,’ and that really identifies
and depicts what we’re trying to do
here at Wajax. In other words, we
want to combine bearings and power
transmission with hydraulics and
process, and bring those all together
in one engineered solution. Nobody
else can offer that,” he says. And since
Wajax already delivers many products,
it is already familiar with the brands that
customers prefer, and can incorporate
these brands into any engineered system.
“This greatly reduces our customer’s
excess and duplicate inventory,” he says.
Customers hardly need to venture very
far for this extensive support. Southern
Ontario branches are now in Belleville,
Concord, Mississauga, Guelph, Stoney
Creek, London, Windsor and Sarnia.
And each of those locations is also
committed to delivering a consistent
level of products and service, which
is particularly important to customers
like Maple Leaf Foods and Linamar that
have facilities established across several
communities.
A diverse customer base presents
another advantage. As different as
industries may seem, there are lessons
that can be shared.

“We’re never going to trade secrets
among competing manufacturers,” Miller
stresses, “but in the automotive world,
you might see an application that could
apply in the food and beverage world.”
The technology used to wash down
equipment in a food and beverage plant,
for example, was recently applied in a
paint booth when a Wajax representative
realized that a less-caustic solution
could help to extend the life of service
components.
Indeed, the branches are doing far more
than pulling stock from their respective
warehouses.
“We want to be solution providers. Not
order takers,” Miller says. “This valueadded service is really what differentiates
us. Anybody can supply you with the
bearing that you need, but what about
when that bearing fails? Or what if you’re
having consistent failures on that piece
of equipment? You want to identify why
that is happening. So let’s go in and take
a look at the application. Maybe there’s
a lubrication problem. OK, great. That
means we can look at an automated
lubrication system.”
The business approach actually matches

an ongoing shift in the way manufacturers
buy their supplies. Twenty years ago,
purchasing decisions were largely based
on individual relationships between
customers and suppliers, Miller explains.
But today’s purchasing managers also
have extensive price-related information
at their fingertips, whether it comes from
their own internal records or a quick visit
to the Internet. “That puts the customer at
a more advantageous position to reach
out to their distribution base and say,
‘Guys, compete for this, and compete for
everything,’” Miller says.
In this environment, Wajax can
differentiate itself with value-added
services, such as guidance about the right
combination of components that can
increase the throughput in an individual
process.
Of course, this requires a deeper
understanding of the different products.
Says Miller: “We have to have the
technical expertise to be able to go in and
identify that OEM Part ABC is exactly the
same as Part 123. We know that if you
buy Part 123 from us, we have it in stock.
You’re not waiting 10 weeks to get it from
the OEM.”
Eliminating downtime related to a
shipment might only be the beginning. A
customer who has turned to the same part
for 25 years, simply because it was used
in the original piece of equipment, may
be missing out on an option that includes
features which permit longer product life.
“Now something like your conveyor is
going to run smoother, and you’re going
to have less wear costs, reducing your
Total Cost of Ownership,” he explains.
“And whether you’re processing chicken
or you’re making tires, you want to make
sure your throughput and up-times are as
high as possible.”
The Wajax Industrial Components
branches will even go so far as to
document the potential savings in writing,
leveraging the information recorded in
a Documented Cost Savings program
which resides in an Enterprise Resource
Planning system.
When everything is combined, it is
truly a valuable package.
• Extended service life under poor lubrication conditions
Tests have been conducted at the SKF Engineering & Research
Centre to verify the service life of bearings made from SKF nextgeneration bearing steel.
The results († diagram 2) show conclusively that upgraded
SKF Explorer bearings last twice as long as the original, when
used under poor lubrication conditions.
• Extended service life under contaminated conditions
The SKF Engineering & Research Centre also performed
endurance tests under contaminated conditions that verified performance improvements of the upgraded SKF Explorer bearings.
These test results showed († diagram 3) that the upgraded
SKF Explorer bearings provide almost twice the service life under
contaminated operating conditions.

Linamar has already grown from a one-man machine shop
into a Canadian success story. That is only the beginning.

The early days of the recession were
hardly kind to Canada’s automakers.
The market for new cars imploded;
General Motors and Chrysler needed
government bailouts; long-time industry
suppliers scaled back or closed their
doors altogether.
What a difference a few years can
make. Chrysler recently announced
that 2011 was its first profitable year
since 1997. General Motors saw profits
increase 62% between 2010 and 2011,
recording its best bottom line in history.
Most of all, there are more cars making
the trip from assembly line to dealership
and the road.
And Linamar is playing a larger role
than ever before.
The Guelph, Ontario-based business
that Frank Hasenfratz founded as a oneman machine shop in 1966 has grown
into an undeniable Canadian success
story, boasting 39 manufacturing
facilities and a global presence
stretching from North America to
Europe and Asia. Last year alone it
launched more than $450 million in
new programs, securing $200 million
in growth from the domestic market’s
rebounding automotive sector.

sheet. Linamar was able to survive the
economic downturn in part because
it had little debt and a conservative
business culture, he says. “It enabled us
to pick up a lot of new work, especially
in 2009 when a lot of suppliers closed
up shop.” When competing suppliers
closed their doors, Detroit 3 automakers
needed to find partners who had the
capital and capabilities to step forward.

Of course, Linamar’s success
involves more than a healthy balance
sheet. Under the leadership of CEO
Linda Hasenfratz – one of the founder’s
daughters and the “Li” in the Linamar
name — the company has also been
careful to focus on engine parts and
transmission components that are
prime candidates for outsourcing. It is
machining cylinder heads and engine
blocks, and has expanded on its
experience with 4-speed transmissions
by introducing shaft, shell and clutch
modules for 6-speed designs.
Every car’s engine, transmission
and driveline contain about $3,000
worth of machined parts and
assembled content. Even though
about 70% of that work is still
completed by Original Equipment
Manufacturers (OEMs), ever-larger
shares are being outsourced by
companies that want to control
costs and quickly expand into
emerging markets. “Having a global
manufacturing footprint supports
our customers with their global
platforms,” Stoddart adds.
The outsourcing trend is hardly
limited to Detroit 3 automakers.
European
and
Japanese
manufacturers are now looking
at whether they need to complete
their own camshafts, cylinder heads
and engine blocks in house. “Ford
is producing a brand new V6 with
great fuel economy. The emissions
are perfect. Their performance,
horsepower and all those types of
things are there,” Stoddart says.
“The Japanese are questioning,
‘How is it that Ford can generate
an engine like that when they
outsource the parts?’” Linamar has
yet to secure business from Japanese
automakers for critical components
like these, but the discussions have
begun. “Two or 3 years ago, you
didn’t even have the dialogue,” he
says, referring to how the business
has changed.

The outsourcing trends may
not even be limited to the OEMs
themselves. As Linamar develops
a growing number of systems and
modules rather than individual
components,
the
company
recognizes that it may need to
outsource some carefully selected
work of its own. “We struggle with
that because the company’s roots
are as a machiner, and why would
we outsource?” Stoddart admits. But
there is no overlooking the amount
of capital required to develop
complex vehicle systems like All
Wheel Drive. Maybe there are parts
that could be left to others.
As important as it is to secure new
business, Linamar is also committed
to finding better ways to perform the
jobs that already exist. The company
founder was an early adopter of
Japanese Kaisen models that are
designed to reduce waste of every
sort – reducing inventory levels by
40% in the process. The work hardly
ended there. Hasenfratz personally
leads today’s Cost Attack Teams
which challenge process engineers
to find ongoing efficiencies. “He’s
not there to beat them up or criticize
them,” Stoddart says. But with 50
years of manufacturing experience,
the entrepreneur can help to analyze
every process, from the purchase of
raw materials to the shipping of a
final product.
A close relationship with suppliers
like Wajax Industrial Components
makes a difference of its own, and
plays a role in finding the new
efficiencies or cost savings that
support ongoing success. “They
understand the automotive industry
and its competitive nature,” Stoddart
says. “You need to be innovative. You
need new ideas to improve costs or
come up with new methods.” Wajax
is committed to all of that.
As big as the company has
become, Linamar also makes a point
to control the size of each facility.
Most of the 39 plants are no larger
than 200,000 square feet and have
fewer than 400 employees. (The

Sandrin Services is prepared to tackle any emergency,
whether it’s addressed in a house call or in its own shop

Sandrin Services is ready to roll like an
ambulance waiting for its next healthcare
emergency, and there is a good reason. The
machining and fabricating service in Sarnia,
Ontario could get a call at any time, any day,
to repair something as quickly as possible at
a manufacturing facility or power plant.
It is the type of support that can determine
whether a business lives or dies.
“This happens a little more regularly
than you might think,” says President and
General Manager Deanna Sandrin. “In
once case a critical motor failed and shut
down half of a plant in Corunna, Ontario,
at a cost of $1 million a day in downtime.
The customer truly believed the motor
could not be put back into service, but we
completed the repair 4 days earlier than
we had originally expected. This job really
saved them.”
Sandrin Services makes plenty of
house calls, but its home base — a
42,000-square-foot shop — is plenty
busy. Today, tradesmen are balancing a
5,500-horsepower, 12,000-pound motor
rotor from a petrochemical plant. An

electro-mechanic is working through a
checklist of light maintenance tasks on a set
of 100-horsepower motors that customers
have stored for safekeeping. Other staff
members are applying their machining,
welding and balancing expertise to build
a custom lifting device and cradle for
removing and transporting a huge turbine
from a power-generating company.
The phone rings. There is a brief
conversation. Minutes later, a machinist
retrieves engineering drawings that months
earlier had been supplied by a client.
He then selects stock to manufacture a
replacement part. Thanks to this foresight,
the client will soon receive the new part
and stop the downtime clock.
The ability to quickly respond to
customer needs is due in part to a reliable
source of parts. Sandrin Services has an
exclusive agreement with Wajax Industrial
Components to keep NTN bearings on
consignment, and that is further supported
with the analyses that reveal why original
bearings may have failed in the first place.
Wajax also supplies process pumps and
power transmission parts such as gearboxes,
shaft couplings, sprockets and chains —
day or night.
“We do all their after-hours callouts: The
plants call Sandrin [Services], for example,
with a motor failure at midnight. Sandrin
will pick up the motor and call me for the
parts they need. Sandrin has 24/7 access to
our parts and our manufacturers’ inventory,”
says Mark Cain, Sales Representative for
Industrial Distribution at Wajax Industrial
Components in Sarnia. “When they call, I
jump.”
Since the company president’s father
and uncle started their small machine
shop in 1938, Sandrin Services has grown
and equipped itself to handle ever-larger
and more specialized tasks. Its clients
now represent industries such as petrochemical, automotive, truck-trailer, mining,
pulp and paper, power generation, marine,
mechanical and manufacturing.
True to its roots, the facility has a wellequipped traditional machine shop. Its
many chores include OEM manufacturing,
tool and die, and prototype work. It has

of its balancing machines has a capacity of
15,000 pounds and a 115-inch-diameter
swing.
The facility is equipped to complete
turbine
overhauls,
electric
motor
diagnostics, repairs, rewinding and
trending. When problems cannot be
trucked back to the shop, machinists make
field trips with Climax portable machine
tools. They perform to the same exacting
precision of traditional stationary machine
tools, but are made for easy disassembly,
transport and rapid reassembly for in-situ
machining. The company has used them
for projects such as a 90-inch hot blast
valve, turbine rotor shafts, and rail car
components.
The 38-member team has developed a
great deal of expertise along the way. “Most
of our tradesmen have backgrounds that

customers bring in new equipment just to
have the chrome plating removed; and an
alloy overlay applied and machined
to make a tougher working surface.
Sandrin has done a lot to diversify
her customer base. For example,
the electric motor division, added
in 2006, offers many new services
and has opened up new markets.
Its advanced winding analyzer,
for instance, tells how a motor is
performing. Electro-technicians have
used it to test the condition of the
windings on motors up to 5,000
horsepower. On the Preventative
Maintenance side, technicians use it
to predict potential failures, using the
history of accumulated data.
Sandrin Services has turnkey
maintenance contracts with clients
such as petrochemical and ethanol
plants and valve manufacturers. These
packages now include collecting
trending data for motors. “For some
progressive customers, we have motor
databases for their motors and we trend
for failure. This allows them to budget
for shutdowns and do better shutdown
planning,” Sandrin says.
Meanwhile, the electric motor
division offers Root Cause Analyses for
motors. “We’ve had motors come in
here that were deemed good, but they
were not. It has been the other way
around, too. [Root Cause Analysis] is
increasing all the time. It is becoming
more and more critical,” Sandrin says.
Sandrin Services was also able to
play both sides of the maintenance and
breakdown equation during the U.S.
recession. “Customers held back on
some maintenance projects, which led
to more breakdowns and emergencies
and more overtime hours for us. Now
customers are getting back into regular
maintenance routines, bringing work
back to us. Because of our diversity we
were not hit hard,” Sandrin says.
The future of the company lies with
new equipment, new markets and
internal human resources. Sandrin
shares an example of a recent
investment in a powerful cleaning
tool: “We installed a large ultrasonic
cleaning tank using a technology from
Toronto-based Tech Sonic Services that
removes contaminants with ultrasound.
It can accept objects up to 6.1 metres
(20 feet) long and 1.8 metres (6 feet) in
diameter.
“The tank will remove 98% of all
forms of hydrocarbon contaminants
and refinery by-products from the
surface of any material on equipment
such as heat exchangers, scaffolding
and motors. It can clean components
that were once declared impossible
to clean. This is a big investment and
a great new service we now offer,”
she says.
An emerging market with great
promise for Canadian equipment
servicing companies is the wind
turbine industry. With thousands of
wind turbines starting to come out of
OEM warrantees, good pickings are
coming for Canadian companies with
the requisite maintenance skills.
Diversifying
the
company’s
customer base has been one of
Sandrin’s priorities during her 14year tenure, and this rapidly growing
industry is in her crosshairs. “We have
been exploring this for the past year
or so. I see this as a definite growth
area. Some wind farms are only now
realizing that their OEM commitments
are going to expire.”
The next few years will be very
exciting, Sandrin believes, but she
knows that it is her employees who
make the company’s future possible.
“It has become harder to find young
kids who want to work, and so a strong
element of our focus is to bring in
young talent,” she says. “Some come
by and we hire them with no training. If
they work out, our guys will take them
under their wings. We will sponsor
them and send them out to Ontario
apprenticeship training programs. We
also accept students for practicums. We
are constantly training young people
who are working towards their trade
tickets. We feel very strongly about
having apprentices and continuing
their development. After all, if you
don’t have the team to do the work,
it’s all just big dreams.”

foundation tend to be created using
a common approach. A form is built
using sheets of plywood, the newly
constructed cavity is filled with
concrete, and the plywood is pulled
away once the concrete dries.
SMAG Industries, a mechanical
engineering firm based in Longueuil,
Quebec (south of Montreal), creates
a more energy-efficient option,
combining the insulating value of
concrete and expanded polystyrene
panels.

“We are going against traditions.

[in Canada], while in Europe and
other parts of the world, everybody
builds in concrete.”
The key to producing the panels
themselves comes in the form of
the automated shape-moulding
machine, which melts polystyrene
beads into a panel, and opens and
closes using the power of hydraulic
actuators.
When it came time to optimize
the equipment for the global
marketplace, the company turned
to Wajax Industrial Components.
“As an example, the experts from
[Wajax] have contributed to the
modification of hydraulic valves.

different shapes and sizes of them.
It also allows the installation of the
wire mesh and the discharge of the
finished product.
“To make the situation better,
we have worked on the hydraulic
circuit in order to be able to lock
[it] without using the pump. As it is
used less frequently than before, it
consumes less energy and generates
less heat,” he says, noting that
they work just 1.5 minutes out of
a 4-minute process. The end result
is equipment that is less expensive
to build and maintain. “Our
engineering department really did a
fantastic job.”
Meanwhile, a section of the shapemoulding machine is outfitted with
12 cylinders that keep the mould
closed during the injection of the
polystyrene beads. “They needed
to use 1-¼-inch hoses for the
circulation of the fluid that activates
the cylinder for a very precise
period of time,” Brochu adds. “It
took an awful lot of fluid to make
this happen. We have shortened the
stroke of the cylinders from 4 to 2
inches, so that less hydraulic fluid
would be needed, and even more
important, this solution allowed
[us] to use ¾-inch hoses that are
[one-quarter the cost of] the big
1-¼-inch.”
In addition to that, the Wajax
experts managed to reduce the
size of the hydraulic fluid’s tank
from 10 to 5 gallons, reducing the
equipment’s operating costs and
footprint alike.
It is not the only way that SMAG
has enhanced its offerings. Teams
have also improved the equipment
used to make the wire frame.
The
automated
100-foot-long
machine that makes the frame is
fed by huge reels of steel cable
weighing 1,500 to 2,000 pounds.
This wire is fed from the reel, folded
into the desired shape and cut to a
predetermined length. A series of
U-shaped bends in the wire create
the spots where other wires can lock
in place.
All the related welding operations
are also completely automated,
with all activities monitored over
the Internet, allowing the wire mesh
to advance at a pace of 24 feet
per minute without sacrificing any
accuracy.
“The metal wires that connect
the panels have a diameter of 160
thousandths of an inch, and they
ensure that the pouring of the
concrete will generate only a lateral
load, not a vertical load,” Meilleur
adds. “The wire meshes need to be
perfectly identical and positioned at
the very same places.”
Once complete, the Polycrete
formworks can resist a lateral load
of 10,000 pounds per linear foot
when compressed.
“It needs to resist to concrete’s
lateral loads when it’s poured,”
Meilleur explains, referring to the
need for the high strengths. “This
pressure is influenced by factors
such as the height of the formwork
and concrete’s temperature, since
the chemical reaction of concrete
drying up is much quicker when the
temperature is high. As an example,
for a 10-foot high formwork at a
temperature of 90 F [Fahreneheit],
the load will be of 900 pounds per
square inch. At 40 F, that load would
be more than double: 1,900 pounds
per square inch. We need to prepare
for the most extreme conditions.
That’s why we install metal wire
mesh in the formwork.”
The design of the metal frame even
makes it easier for users to carry the
forms, since they can be folded and
unfolded with ease.

Know the Hose
Every hydraulic hose should be STAMPED
before it’s ordered

When Robert Murphy talks about
the need for hydraulic hoses to be
STAMPED, he is not just referring to the
brand name printed on the cover.
Sure, the Parker Canada product
sales manager is bound to display
certain brand loyalties, but this special
acronym – helping buyers to remember
Size, Temperature, Application, Media,
Pressure, End Connections and Delivery
– identifies the facts that should guide
every purchase.
Size
The size of a hydraulic hose is
based on its Inside Diameter (ID),
and expressed in “dash numbers” that
represent 16ths of an inch. A product
with a one-inch ID, for example, will be
called a -16 hose; a 3/4 –inch hose will
be known as -12, representing an ID of
12/16 inches.
“There’s also the size of the actual
connection,” Murphy adds. In most
cases, this will match the size of the
hose itself, but there are exceptions.
“If you’re hooking up to a pump, the
pump’s port could be one-inch, and
you might be feeding it with 1-1/4-inch
hose.”
Meanwhile, the size of a bend radius
will determine how the hose can be
routed, and rules from organizations
like SAE, ISO or DIN will dictate how
far the individual ports might need to
be spaced apart. Otherwise, there is a
risk of kinking the hose.
Some products will also bend more
easily than others. While selected
designs might require the muscle of
as many as 4 installers, Parker Canada
has options that will bend with half
the traditional effort, saving time and
manpower alike.
Temperature
There are actually 2 temperatures that
need to be considered when choosing
a hydraulic hose: the ambient
temperature around it, and the
temperature of the media being
conveyed.
Ambient temperatures will
obviously make a difference in

hydraulic hose stiff and difficult
to bend. “And too much
heat will further cure the
rubber typically used in
hydraulic hose and
render it brittle. It
will crack very similar to skin,”
Murphy says.
Most rubber-based hoses can handle
temperatures up to 257 Fahrenheit,
while other materials will usually
be needed to address higher
temperatures. The same is true at
the other end of the thermometer,
where there may be a need for
special hose covers that stay pliable in
the extreme cold.
The fluids running through the
middle of the hose can be affected
by temperatures in their own ways.
For example, a water-based product
will change characteristics in the face
of high temperatures and become
acidic. This is why it is important to
check compatibility guides, which will
determine how the hose will respond to
temperature changes in different fluids.
Applications
When it comes to applications, the
biggest factor to consider is whether the
hose is used in a dynamic or static system.
A static system like a bottle jack will

increase and release of pressure, but the
dynamic environment on an excavator
will see pressures turn on and off like
a switch.
A static situation can live with a 3:1
safety factor (the maximum operating
pressure is dictated by dividing the
burst pressure by 3), but a dynamic
environment will require 4:1, and
extreme situations will need safety
factors of 6:1. Flexibility will also be
important to answer the radical moves
of an excavator bucket or tree de-limber.
The threats hardly end there. The
same hose that could be dragged over
a mine’s rocks can also be damaged by
debris falling from the ceiling, Murphy
notes. In these cases, special covers
made from rubber polymer coatings
like Ultra High Molecular Polyethylene
(UHMPE) can make a real difference.
Other protective options include nylon
sleeves, or spiral or metal wraps which
help to resist crushing.
Media
Hydraulic
hoses
can
transfer
everything from hydraulic fluids and
fuel to gases like nitrogen, but some
media will dry rubber more quickly
than others, and chemicals or additives
can present unique threats of their own.
This means it’s important to make sure
the inner tube is compatible with the
media itself.
Pressure
Of course, the pressures inside
hydraulic hoses have also been on
the rise. Average working pressures
were a mere 1,200 to 1,500 psi just
a couple of decades ago, but they
now range between 3,000 and 4,000
psi. Users of European equipment
are even seeing pressures approach
8,000 psi in mobile applications like
excavators and bulldozers.
“There has been a huge push
for productivity out of hydraulic
systems,” Murphy explains. “The
way to get more work out of
something without increasing the
size of the cylinder and pumps and
flow is to get more pressure through
the system.”
Every hose includes a spec’ for
minimum burst levels, which needs
to be combined with the safety
factor. A hose with a 20,000 psi
burst level and requiring a 4:1 safety
factor, for example, would see the
maximum operating pressure set at
5,000 psi.
End Connections
There are more than 100 standards
guiding the end connections on
a hose, so it will be important
to consider how it will actually
connect to the system.
Delivery
Before any hose is delivered,
suppliers should also be paying close
attention to the ways that products
have been flushed and capped.
“Our OEMs are insisting more
and more that we clean the hose
before we cap the ends,” Murphy
says. “Most systems now require
cleanliness levels where the largest
particle can be no larger than 3
microns.” Anything larger than this
could attack everything from piston
pumps to servo control valves.
The cleaning itself can involve
blowing air through an opening,
flushing it with different media, and
shooting foam pucks through the
middle of the hose.
When all of these STAMPED details
are considered, buyers will truly
know their hydraulic hoses inside
and out.

Pay close attention to the filters.

more pressure than ever before.
Maximum pressures that barely
cracked 2,000 psi just 2 decades
ago are now routinely approaching
5,000 psi. The pressures in some
specialized mobile applications
are even reaching almost 6,500
psi.
Surprisingly, some users have
failed to upgrade the related
filtration along the way.
“Many times we see filtration
[technology]
that

been
relatively unchanged for years, or
sometimes decades,” says Steve
Evanovich,
Vice-President
of
Engineering at Schroeder Industries.
“As components change, as flow
ratings increase, there’s a constant
need with every design change to
review your filtration and make
sure it is up to the operating
standards or operating limits of
your equipment.”
Depending on the report that you

and 90% of all hydraulic failures can
be linked to unwanted particulate
contamination and water. Without the
right filters, servo valves can begin to
stick and wear, while sealing surfaces
can break down altogether. Piston
pumps, directional valves and moving
parts of every sort can be damaged.

more than the filter element itself.

expected to protect sliding or mating
surfaces from the unwanted particles
that can lead to transient failures – such
as those that cause a sticking control

At Great Lakes Greenhouses, innovative ideas
seem to take root faster than the cucumbers

Paul Dyck’s mind is obviously racing
in several different directions during
a tour of Great Lakes Greenhouses. “I
gotta show you something,” he says,
stopping in mid sentence and cranking
his golf cart into a sudden 3-point
turn. In seconds he’s heading down
yet another one of the aisles that cut
through 50 acres of cucumber vines, on the
way to display his team’s latest invention.
The business could be described as a
research facility as much as a farm, given
the way it continues to experiment with
tools of every sort. His demonstration of a
remote-controlled sprayer is followed by a
look at a retractable polyethylene ceiling

used to retain heat, and the portable frames
being fabricated for a massive high-speed
conveyor. The surroundings would even
seem at home in a lab, given the bright
lighting and white plastic sheets that cover
the floor.
But the ongoing upgrades are more than
a learning exercise. They are a matter of
survival in the hyper-competitive greenhouse
industry. “We used to make money in the
wintertime. We don’t anymore. Our winter
period is a survival-only time of year,” he
says, noting how Mexican growers and their
unheated greenhouses have an undeniable
advantage during the colder months.
The advantage shifts northward between
April and October when Leamington –
often promoted as Ontario’s tomato capital
– becomes North America’s leading source
of cucumbers.

Forget the typical vision of a farm with tilled soil. In this
operation, thousands of cucumber seedlings are planted
in blocks of rockwool and grown under the lights until
they are tall enough to move into the main growing
area. There, they are mounted on troughs that hang a
few inches off the floor. In just 3 weeks the vines are 6
feet tall and producing the cucumber varieties of choice,
largely based on the growing season and the sunlight
that comes with it.
An intricate irrigation system feeds a mixture of water
and fertilizer through a 1/2-inch line and into a red
spike at the roots of every vine. The pressures are also
equalized so each plant receives the same measure,
explains Greenhouse Manager John Friesen, noting how
the rows of plants stretch 600 feet from gable to gable.
Any extra water, still loaded with nutrients, is pumped
back into a storage tank. “Back in the day, it would just
run into the ditch,” he says, but those days are long gone.
Fresh water from nearby Lake Erie is now stored in a
250,000-gallon tank, mixed with the reclaimed water,
run through sand filters, pasteurized to kill bacteria, and
blended in a third tank. After that, sensors monitor factors
such as the pH and automatically add the required dose
of concentrated fertilizer.
Even the pipes running between tanks and greenhouses
show signs of the maintenance team’s innovative work.
The business has replaced PVC pipes with HDPE (High
Density Polyethylene) versions, which are fused and
assembled as needed. “The stuff is strong. You can run
over it with a bulldozer,” says Friesen, noting how the
favoured material has virtually eliminated catastrophic
failures.
The systems that maintain the environment inside
the greenhouse probably receive the most attention of
all. “If you lost power today, when it’s nice and cold,
within a couple hours, the plants would be finished,” he
explains, referring to the winter storm raging on the other
side of the greenhouse panels. A central computer and
electronic sensors monitor everything from temperature
to humidity, outdoor wind speeds and sunlight, while a
trio of 800-kilowatt backup generators stand at the ready.
The boilers themselves are monitored with everything
from a data analyzer to a thermal imager at least once a
year, while other annual inspections focus on thousands
of racks and pinions that allow sections of the roof to
open when heat needs to be released.
The commitment to maintaining equipment is obvious
everywhere. Even the used machinery looks like it has
been pulled right off the shelf. A decades-old press brake
that is older than some of the workers around it is no
exception, and is being coated in a bright blue paint.
“That’s one thing Paul is particular about: It’s got to look

good. Paint it, paint it, paint it,” Friesen says.
“A new pipe is barely cooled down and
we’re already painting it.”
Dyck sees it as more support in the name
of productivity. “They’re more conscientious
and more productive if they’ve got a nice
place to work in,” he insists.
Of course, ongoing maintenance
programs like these require a steady supply
of parts and guidance alike, and that has
led to a close relationship with Wajax

Dyck agrees, noting how the company
turns to Wajax to source everything from
pumps to hydraulic components, hoses,
wheels, National bearings, belts, fan
motors and shafts. But he also stresses
the value of the accurate invoicing, and
has little patience for other suppliers who
make regular mistakes in paperwork. “I
can’t deal with that stuff,” he says. Wajax’s
consolidated invoices eliminate several
administrative headaches.
As important as identified replacement
parts may be, Great Lakes Greenhouses
continues to explore every new option
that promises to increase efficiency. The
new 4,500 bhp Nebraska boiler offers
a perfect example, including features
like a soot blower that will keep tubes as
clean as possible. Pumps throughout the
greenhouse have been upgraded to models
with variable frequency drives, offering
the added benefit of reducing the water
hammer that would otherwise pound away
at the pipes.
Six acres of the greenhouse have also
been enhanced with 12-foot sheets of
polyethylene stretching above the plants
like a false ceiling. These sheets can be
rolled up on a summer day, or left in place
to retain 30% more heat in the depths of
winter. And like many of the innovations
around it, this system was developed
entirely in house. “We’ve kind of eliminated
our outside trades,” Dyck explains. “I like
my independence. I get things done faster
and I get them done when I want.” With
a 7-member maintenance team close at
hand, the business can also address a break
in a steam pipe or irrigation line within a
half hour. Tanks are fabricated on the shop
floor, and new tools are designed and built
on employee benches.
Above all, the team transforms visions
into reality. A perfect example of that
comes in the form of a remote-controlled,
4,800-litre stainless steel tank equipped
with a 100-hp engine and Roto-Jet pumps.
The equipment – that would look at home
on the set of Star Wars – rolls through the
greenhouse aisles and sprays down every
corner to fight the disease or insects which
could otherwise destroy a crop. “Out of

that’s kind of the shining star,” Dyck says,
referring to the result of 2 years of research.
“There’s nothing in the industry like it.”
When he first joined the industry, plants
were actually rooted in the ground, and
the space inside the greenhouse could be
cleaned with a traditional orchard sprayer.
But the addition of trays and low-hanging
steam pipes limited the cleaning process
to a less-effective cart-mounted sprayer. In
contrast, the new sprayer releases a torrent
of water, delivering 150 gallons a minute
at 600 psi and cleaning about an acre of
greenhouse every hour. “The place is a
freaking tsunami,” Dyck says, referring
to the wall of water that emerges under
the power of the Roto-Jet pump. Other
suppliers suggested multiple pumps, but
Wajax was able to recommend the single
unit to limit any horsepower losses.

“I don’t want to have any more downtime
than absolutely necessary,” Dyck explains.
“A tomato grower, a pepper grower, his crop
will be out for a month. He’ll be cleaning
and washing. We don’t do that. We do that
all on a rapid, quick flip basis ... Every day
that my greenhouse is empty is a lost day of
production. There’s only 365 days in a year,
and if we could, we would grow every one
of them, but we can’t because our crops
have to be removed.”

plants. “Today you see the plants,” Friesen
says, referring to row upon row of the vines.
“By the end of the day they’ll be laying on
the ground, we’ll do one day of clean-out,
and the next day we’ll be planting.”
As quick as that process sounds, Dyck
wants it to be faster. The old vines are
effectively shredded by a trio of mobile
vine choppers, built around a series of
rotating blades and Permco pumps, but
the cut plants still need to be hauled in
and out of the greenhouse using bins and
lift trucks. This is why the maintenance
team is in the midst of building a series
of 10-foot carts that will link together
and support a 24-inch-wide high-speed
conveyor belt running 1,000 feet down
the middle of the greenhouse, feeding
clippings directly into a manure spreader.
“It’s going to work! It’s going to work!”
Dyck says.
You can almost see the wheels turning
in his mind as he describes other projects
on the horizon. Trays of vermiculite may
become the growing medium of the
future, since the material can be dumped,
steamed and re-used. New varieties of
cucumbers are tested during the planting
of every crop. As he parks his golf cart by
the boiler, Dyck also talks about plans
to co-generate electricity once the area
secures a new transmission line.

Quebec company’s products thrive in some of the world’s most hostile environments

How big is big? Big is when your name
is on frontline firefighting equipment at
this century’s 2 worst industrial disasters:
the 2010 Deepwater Horizon drilling
rig explosion and the 2011 Fukushima
Daiichi nuclear disaster. Big is when you
are the sole supplier to the United States
Forest Service. Big is when organizers of
the 2010 Vancouver Olympics ask for
your product by name.
If Niedner — a Coaticook, Quebec
manufacturer of industrial fire hose —
were to line up a year of production from
end to end, the hoses would span more
than half the width of Canada. Its 12-inch
diameter TAIGA industrial water hose can
move 5.3 million litres of water an hour,
which would suck an Olympic swimming
pool dry in 30 minutes flat.
The strongest hoses can be pressurized
to 2,600 psi without bursting. In abrasion
tests, 100,000 cycles (one cycle equals
one back and forth rub) will not wear
through the toughest products. They
can work across temperature swings of
120 Celsius – such as from a frigid -51
C to 66 C — without becoming brittle or
dangerously soft.
Some of the products are disposable.
During a single day of fighting a large
forest fire, more than 1,000 50- and 100foot hoses might be left to burn, which
is why the United States Forest Service
keeps hundreds of thousands in stock
around the country.
Niedner hoses are used for fire
suppression in a wide variety of
municipal, forestry, industrial and military
applications. There are more than 50 part
numbers alone for military-grade hose
in Canada and the United States. They
also transport foam and chemicals. “You
just can’t imagine how many uses there
are for lay-flat hose and in how many
markets,” says Daniel Boisvert, Director of
New Market Development. Tiny Niedner
hoses are part of automobile and aircraft
air bag deployment systems. Fat 12-inch
hoses are used to transport potable water.
They are even used on high-performance
sailboats that have furling mainsails.

of gleaming white bobbins on colourcoded racks feed yarn through thousands
of holes in the ceiling, to the 2nd-story

on the looms and then chop them up
for the different departments,” Boisvert
explains. Hoses are usually made in 50and 100-foot lengths, but Niedner also
makes 500-foot hoses.
Elsewhere in the facility, 2 extruding
machines make inner liners, which
contain the water within the hoses.
Some fire departments specify rubber
inner liners, which Niedner continues
to make, but most of the company’s
inner liners are made with thermoplastic
polyurethane (TPU). Niedner pioneered
the use of TPU, which give hoses their
ability to perform in extreme heat and
cold. “TPU is much lighter than rubber
and can withstand colder weather while
staying flexible. It is very difficult to use a
rubber hose at -40,” Boisvert notes.
TPU liners are co-extruded and inserted
into the polyester jacket. Next, the outer
jacket gets a treatment of a proprietary
elastomer: a liquid polyurethane resin.
This is also the stage at which different
hoses get their colours, such as bright
blue, orange, green, yellow, purple
and red. “The resin encapsulates every
fiber of the outer jacket and enhances
its physical properties by, for example,
keeping out debris. It increases the
hoses’ resistance to abrasion, ultraviolet
radiation and solvents and prevents any
fungal growth,” Boisvert explains.
Further downstream, 3 expansion

on the hoses, but only after orders are
received. (Every municipality has its own
standards.)
In one of the final steps in the
manufacturing process, each hose is
rolled out and pressurized to its mainline
pressure, then dried and packed. Only
then is it ready to be shipped.
Since Charles Niedner started his
company in Malden, Massachusetts,
it has attracted several owners. Wajax
bought the business in 1973, Wildfire
purchased it in 1995 and then Tyco
International bought it in 2000. Most
recently, in 2009, Varennes, Quebecbased Sanexen Environmental Services
bought the company. Today, Niedner
ships hoses to 30 countries.
Competition and a high Canadian
dollar challenge the company, as does
the copying of its more common products
by Chinese companies. “Competition
and the economy are clearly the biggest
challenges we have. But by leveraging
our R and D department to design
new hose and couplings for unique
applications, we are able to differentiate
ourselves from the copycat competition,”
Boisvert says.
TPU is a good example of a Niedner
innovation that has kept competitors
off balance. Another was its 1983
introduction of dedicated snowmaking hose – another industry first.
Two critical differentiators define snow
hose: flexibility in cold weather and
high operating pressures. The hose
remains flexible down to -51 Celsius and
typically operates at over 1,000 psi. A
large mountain like Vermont’s Jay Peak
keeps more than 16 kilometres of snow
hose in stock.
For a completely different problem, one
facing cities around the world, Niedner
has been working for the past 11 years
with Aquapipe, a division of Sanexen,
on a process it uses to rehabilitate old
water mains without removing them.
The process includes the use of woven
jackets and epoxy.
In 2011, Niedner hired Wajax Industrial
Components to design and build an
epoxy mixing system and steel support
structure. Simply sketched, 2 Draco
diaphragm pumps move 2 different, very
viscous chemicals from barrels up into a
2,300-litre stainless steel tank on a raised
platform, where a MixPro mixer stirs it
to make epoxy. The same 2 chemicals
are also mixed in an adjacent 600-litre
tank. Each tank sits on 3 Mettler Toledo
load cells or scales. A separate pumping
system, using Price washdown pumps, is
used to clean the equipment.
Niedner continues to push the limits of
hose construction. For example, a new
firefighting attack hose will still carry
water at 400 psi even if both outer jackets
have one-inch holes in them.
As well, Niedner’s customers push
the company to new performance
extremes. For example, there is
Texas-based industrial firefighting
company Williams Fire and Hazard
Control, which has used Niedner
hoses to fight every one of its fires
in the past 15 years. It provided
specifications for an industrial grade
fire hose for extreme situations
that resulted in Niedner’s 12-inch
diameter TAIGA hose, introduced to
the market in 2009.
“Our strategy,” says Boisvert, “is to
stay ahead of the curve.”

Moyno pumps play a key role in feed mill’s 2nd rebirth

Meunerie Trans-Canada’s feed mill has
needed to rise from the ashes on more
than one occasion – and that is hardly
a metaphor for a traditional business
challenge. The first mill was destroyed by
fire in 1988, leaving the Couture family to
rebuild the operation in Saint-Apollinaire,
Quebec. Just 2 decades later, that mill was
razed by a fire of its own.
But the idea of closing the doors never
crossed Bernard Couture’s mind. “We’re
in the animal feed business,” says the
company president, “and we had farms that
needed feed.”
The process of rebuilding began with a
look at whether to buy an existing plant,
says Patrick O’Donoughue, a consulting
engineer with PGA Experts, hired to guide
the 2nd rebirth. “Bernard shopped around,
but the existing locations he looked at
showed the industry
hadn’t really reinvested
in itself.”
They quickly realized
that the latest fire
presented them with
the rare opportunity to
build a new plant from
the ground up.
The first item on the
agenda was to find
the right location.
“We wanted to build
in a location that was
nearer to the company’s client farms, the
railways and roads — and closer to a water
source.” After all, firefighters didn’t have
access to enough water when they tried to
battle the last blaze.
The selected site in Pintendre, Quebec
offered the perfect spot.
When it came to choosing the equipment,
O’Donoughue focused on technical needs,
while Couture negotiated the related
prices and pushed for the most advanced
equipment every step of the way.

he would add more stainless steel, which
made our mill a lot more sanitary than
most,” says O’Donoughue.
Decisions like these may have put the
mill well on its way to meeting the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration Act’s new
sanitation standards for animal feed mills,
he adds, predicting that similar Canadian
legislation is on the way. “In fact, when I
was at a feed show in Atlanta, I was told
that we had built the most advanced feed
mill in Canada.”
Another factor that makes this fully
automated plant so advanced is the ability
to enhance the feed with a wide variety
of fluids such as oils and fats, which are
added after the grinding and batching of
other ingredients, creating products that
promote animal growth and productivity
alike. (Many mills use fewer pumps, and as
a result, are limited in the number of fluids
they can introduce.)
A series of 16 individually calibrated
Moyno 1000 pumps are able to address
the different viscosities.
Moyno pumps are known for
their reliability. “We’ve had Moyno
pumps before and our experience
with
them
has
been
good,”
says Couture.
Alain Delisle of Wajax’s Quebec City
branch, agrees: “These would be pumps
that would have to start and stop again and
again, so we needed something reliable.
Also, the pumps are very economical –
they use minimal power. And they are very
accurate. If you calibrate them to pump out
10 gallons per minute, that’s exactly what
you’re going to get.”
Even so, Delisle was on site when
each pump was installed, making sure
everything would run as designed.
The new and improved Meunerie rose
up in Pintendre less than 2 years after
the fire in Saint-Apollinaire, leading to a
grand opening on Oct. 29, 2010.

The containers themselves are insulated,
have on-board heaters, and come complete
with work benches for technicians. Data from
the pumps and instrumentation equipment are
logged in computers and the water output is
monitored and controlled for compliance.
The quantity of each type of equipment in a
monitoring system depends on the complexity
of the site, but exact details are proprietary. A
typical system is capable of handling water flows
up to 1,700 gallons per minute, although Storm
notes that, “The system can be adapted to sitespecific needs by adding more instrumentation
modules or filtration systems.”
As one example, HAZCO is building a unit
that this year will be shipped to Ontario. “It
meets basic discharge criteria for Ontario, but
can be adapted to other criteria,” Storm explains.

Tame the “Power Hogs”
Today’s air-operated diaphragm pumps are
more efficient than ever – and Wajax can prove it

Gear pumps or centrifugal pumps do a great
job when transferring consistent liquids,
but they would have a rough time trying
to handle the sand-laden mixtures that
are addressed by air-operated diaphragm
pumps.
The advantages of the robust pump
designs hardly end there.
“The biggest advantage of an air-operated
diaphragm pump is that you can close the
discharge valve and the pump will not
break. It will not get damaged. It simply
stalls, consuming no energy and generating
no heat,” says Humberto DaSilva of Wajax
Industrial Components in Mississauga,
Ontario. “You do that with a centrifugal
or gear pump and you end up with a
paperweight.”
Of course, older versions of these pumps
have an undeniable weakness – and that
is their thirst for power. It may have been
easy to ignore the shortcoming displayed
by these “power hogs” when power was
cheap, but rising energy bills are leading
users to look for models that require lower
volumes of compressed air than ever
before.
As much as today’s versions of the
pumps look like their predecessors, they
are built with more advanced materials
including everything from exotic alloys to
polypropylene and PVC. Smoother internal
passages are able to reduce friction inside
the pumps, and enhanced valves will
determine exactly which chambers receive
any air, limiting the chance that equipment
might stall.

Above all, they require less energy to do
their jobs.
AirVantage Sandpiper and Versa-Matic
pumps from Warren Rupp actually come
with built-in electronics that refine their
activities without sacrificing the robust
nature of traditional designs, and the
AirVantage pumps even generate their
own electricity to power the onboard
microprocessor.
The electronics themselves are sealed
to withstand washing by everything from a
garden hose to a pressure washer. “Even if
the AirVantage fails, for whatever reason, it
fails in an open mode – so the pump will
keep working,” DaSilva adds.
These electronics measure the velocity of
the shaft and regulate the specific amount
of air that is needed at any moment in time,
much like a car’s cruise control will respond
to the load on an engine. Any changes
in process conditions like tank levels,
viscosity or filtration pressure are instantly
adapted by the AirVantage pump. And the
air consumption is optimized, which leads
to dramatic drops in energy use.
In fact, the savings can be proven.
Wajax Industrial Components can install
a Warren Rupp Trial Verification Kit in an
air line to record pressures and the air
consumed by an original pump, and then
to measure the same factors with the new
pump. The air consumption is shown on
the kit’s display and the data is recorded on
a pair of USB sticks so it can be displayed
in a graph.
Northern Alberta Processing, for
example, had traditionally used a 2-inch
pump consuming 97 scfm, but the flow
meter proved that a new generation of air
operated diaphragm pump consumed a
mere 55 scfm.
Every 4 scfm equates to a full horsepower
or 742 watts, DaSilva observes. “The higher
the flow rate, the more the savings will be.”
The advantages are hardly limited to
lower energy bills. Updates like these can
give a facility the opportunity to add a
pump without ordering a new compressor.
“It’s not the same as electricity where you
can put another circuit breaker in the
panel. Upsizing a compressor costs a lot of
money,” he says.
“If you have a pump that is running more
than 10 minutes an hour, you should really
be looking at this,” DaSilva adds. “If you
plan on doing any expansion in the plant
and you’re already at borderline available
air, here’s the solution … you can still
maintain the same compressor and you
can get more work out of it.
“You just can’t ignore the energy savings.”

years of service – and 3
generations of Hugh O’Neills
Nothing illustrates the length of Larry
Cronin’s career at Wajax Industrial
Components better than the name
Hugh O’Neill.
Some employees think they’ve been
around a long time if they have worked
for a father and son in the same industry.
But during his career in Sault Ste. Marie,
Ontario, Cronin was connected to 3
generations that shared the same name.
He joined Hugh J. O’Neill Mine and
Mill Supplies 48 years ago, at a time
when the company’s founder could still
be seen strolling through the office, and
was personally hired by Hugh S. O’Neill,
the 2nd generation to lead the business.
Cronin even hired a 3rd generation of
the family, Hugh J.A. O’Neill, who
eventually became the regional manager
overseeing the location that is now a
branch of Wajax Industrial Components.
He also admits to kidding Hugh J.A.
O’Neill during the hiring process. “I
remember saying to him, ‘You may have
a silver spoon in your mouth, but you’re
going to work,’” Cronin says with a laugh.
“He began working in the warehouse, and
then as time went on became a salesman.
Then after 3 or 4 years he moved on up to
Timmins ... it was kind of neat [to watch
the career progress].”
But after decades of service, Cronin
has brought his own career to an end,
retiring from his long-time role as branch
manager at the Sault Ste. Marie location.
There were plenty of changes ranging
from products to in-house procedures
during his tenure — and the business
was itself rebranded several times — but
a surprising number of things remained
the same. Several members of the local
team boast decades of their own service,
and customers like Essar Steel Algoma
and St. Mary’s Paper stayed from one
decade to the next.
Cronin’s coffees even seemed to last
longer than most beverages. On more
than one occasion, he would discover a
day-old cup that he had left behind in
the warehouse, and he would drink it.
The decades-long career began on
May 1, 1964, when Cronin responded
to an ad for a delivery boy. “I was just
looking for a job,” he admits. Those

“You know these people and you
build up a rapport with these people,
and you solve their problems. It all
means something,” he says. “I was just
fortunate.”
Cronin remembers the one time that
he approached the middle O’Neill to
discuss another job offer, and the man
who hired him simply advised, “You
have to do what’s right.”
He knew right then that the right thing
was to stay where he was.
Now that it is time to go, Cronin is
easing into retirement. There are plans
for a trip to Vegas, and some extra time
with his 2 daughters and 2 grandchildren.
The pace of his weekdays will certainly
change. “You’ve got to get used to some
change,” he says.
The branch has to accept some
changes of its own. “You don’t look to
replace a guy like Larry,” says Regional
Manager Hugh J.A. O’Neill. “This guy
gave his life to the company and built it
into what it is today.”

in the safety of an inclined conveyor

Serious mining accidents are not
limited to underground spaces or
a coalface. Indeed, the inclined
conveyors that help to transport coal
offer another perfect example of a
location where serious accidents
can happen.
In the event of a power loss,
an inclined conveyor in a loaded
condition can run backwards and out
of control. It is a dangerous situation.
But the risk can be alleviated by
backstop sprag clutches, such as
those that prevent the cars in a theme
park ride from running downhill.
Backstop sprag clutches work by
allowing a shaft to rotate in one
direction as the sprags slip. If the
shaft tries to turn the other way –
something that will happen if the
conveyor begins to run backwards
– the sprags immediately stand up
and lock.
However,
there
is
another
associated problem that needs to be
addressed.
If a blockage occurs between the
lower belt and the return end shaft,
the conveyor will stall. While the
backstop sprag clutch prevents the
belt from running backwards, tension
will still increase in the upper belt
because the slack in the lower belt
can’t feed back through the drive.
The natural reaction of the operator
is to remove whatever is causing the
obstruction, returning the conveyor
back to operation as quickly as
possible. But if the tension in the
upper belt isn’t first released, the
sudden release that occurs when
the blockage is removed will rapidly
pull the lower belt around the return
roller with a huge force. This force
can be so powerful that it has been
known to cause the load on the top
belt to explode in all directions, and
it can even pull a worker into the
conveyor as he is trying to remove
the blockage.

A caster’s load-carrying capacity is also
reduced in a power-driven application,
largely because of the wheel bearing’s
limitations. In addition to this, higher
speeds add considerable stress during
impacts or side thrusts, and they generate
extra heat in the wheel bearings and
swivel heads alike.
The related engineering to tackle these
issues will be a matter of the component’s
life or death.
As important as the speeds may be, the
need for brakes will also increase with the
load on each caster.
When working with heavy-duty casters,
the better brake options include a tread
lock brake and total lock brake.
Tread lock brakes will firmly lock the
wheel against any rolling force. They
engage with a toe-activated mechanism
that prevents the wheel from rolling. This
toe-activated design uses a rubber-faced
plate that can be used against a variety
of tread materials. Most tread lock brake
kits can also be installed in the field, but
should be designed into the caster at the
outset.
The total lock brake, meanwhile,
ensures that the caster’s wheel and swivel
head are locked simultaneously. This
provides the most secure option against
load movement or momentum. These
options are also factory-made when
the caster is created, offering the
best protection from a safety
perspective as well.
No matter what design is
used, however, brakes will need
to be maintained and regularly
inspected.
If the brakes slip because of worn or
damaged wheels, the wheels should be
replaced immediately and the brakes must

be retested. This inspection will involve
making sure the swivel head locks firmly
in place and that the wheel does not turn.
Heavy-duty casters may not be
easily moved or manoeuvred, but the
slightest shift in a load could still begin
the unwanted momentum that can be a
menace in any workplace.

can struggle with the sometimesconflicting demands of reducing
size and weight without sacrificing
performance. But one solution
can be found in planetary wheel
and track drives, which offer
simple and efficient alternatives to
conventional drive axle systems.
A planetary system that features
several small planetary gears
around an input pinion — instead
of a single, larger gear running on
one side — delivers several key
advantages. Efficiencies reach as
high as 97 to 98% per stage; smaller
sizes are possible because of the
planetaries, which support several
reduction stages in a compact space;
and, reliability improves because
the designs reduce radial loads.
Available torque levels also increase
since the forces are shared by
multiple sets of teeth on the primary

geared and axial piston hydraulic
motors, while its wide range of
ratios will help designers of mobile
equipment to match a reduction unit
to a suitable hydraulic transmission.

Consider these steps to enhance and
protect your pneumatic system

As important as electricity, water and gas
are to any facility, most manufacturers also
rely on a 4th utility. It comes in the form of a
reliable supply of compressed air.
Effective pneumatic systems need
properly sized, installed and maintained
components from compressors to work
stations. A few wrong choices, however,
can lead to everything from wasted energy
to system failures.
Consider the following steps when
looking to maximize the performance of
your company’s all-important 4th utility:
Use the latest standards when choosing
filters — A pneumatic system’s required
filtration is governed by a standard known as
DIN ISO 8573-1. This identifies the solids,
water and oil that need to be separated
out of a well-functioning system. Required
levels of filtration are defined right down to
the micrometer.
And don’t simply rely on the levels that
you have been following for years. The
standard was recently updated.
Clean the intake filters and the area
around the compressor — This process
sounds simple: remove the compressor’s
filter and clean it. But the related procedures
can vary, depending on whether the system
relies on a reciprocating, rotary screw or
rotary centrifugal compressor. Maintenance
manuals can offer some important guidance
here.
Use pressure boosters instead of oversizing a system — Some system designers
size their compressors based on the
hungriest work piece in the system, but this
can introduce an array of unwanted costs.
Everything from the tubing to the ports and
Filter Regulator Lubricator (FRL) units will
need to be larger than the other work pieces
require, and the oversized compressor will
waste energy.
In contrast, the addition of a pressure
booster – which works much like a reservoir
– could support main operating pressures
that are much higher, yet still meet the
unusual demands of an individual work
piece.
Use modular joiners to save space in an
FRL assembly — The modular joiner is a
plate that allows 2 sizes of air filtration units
to be mated together. This allows system
designers to size individual filtration units
based on actual flow requirements, and
add larger individual filtration units to avoid
restrictions that would otherwise occur.
Fine filtration is one example. Lock your regulators — Workers have
been known to adjust a system’s overall
pressure in a bid to get more air to individual
workstations. In the process, they can choke
or starve other stations. Opening a regulator

to increase flow can also damage a sealing
system, waste energy, or even cause
physical harm. This is why it is important to
keep the regulators under lock and key.
Consider using flow sensors — A flow
sensor that fits in line with an FRL unit, or
is installed at a work piece, can identify
blocked filters that would otherwise go
unnoticed. Blocked filters restrict air supply,
allow contaminants to build up, and can
eventually contaminate a system or kill the
flow of air no matter what a compressor is
generating.
Establish a Preventive Maintenance
program for your 4th utility — Every
system requires some form of ongoing
maintenance. This will ensure lubricators
have the oil they need, and remove
contaminants as varied as rust, metal
shavings, water, and unwanted oils.
