On Sunday, November 6th, 2011 the Greece Chamber Charitable Foundation held its annual Race on the Ridge
5K. The Foundation, the Greece Chamber of Commerce, sponsors and volunteers all worked together on this
spectacular event that drew nearly 200 runners/walkers and benefitted 5 charity organizations!
As we look at the Chamber’s
success throughout the years much of it
is attributed to terrific members,
sponsors, caring and hard working
volunteers, great leadership, and an
experienced, knowledgeable, friendly
staff. With all that combined, teamwork
is born and included in that teamwork is
volunteerism. Together we accomplish
great things.
Exactly what makes
volunteerism so important to individuals,
communities, businesses and their
employees? Everyone benefits! A study
done in 2010 by VolunteerMatch.org and
United Healthcare found that
volunteering enhances volunteers’
physical and mental health and creates
stronger and more positive relationships
between employers and employees. The
study showed: 1) 68% of those who
volunteered in the past year reported
that volunteering made them feel
physically and mentally healthier 2) 29%
of volunteers who suffer from a chronic
condition said that volunteering has
helped them manage their chronic
condition 3) 89% of volunteers feel that
volunteering lowered their stress level
and 4) 92% of volunteers agree that
volunteering enriches their sense of
purpose in life.
Studies done at The Volunteer
Center of Story County, Iowa showed the
positive effect volunteerism has on the
workplace, team building in the
workplace, employer and employee
relationships, and the community. Their
studies have shown that volunteerism in
the workplace: 1) supports open
communication and solidarity company
wide 2) boosts employee satisfaction 3)
increases ability for companies to attract
and retain employees 4) creates interest
in the community and loyalty among

-By Jodie A. Perry, IOM, President & CEO
Monday, December 18th, 2006 – That was my first day of
work for the Greece Chamber of Commerce. It’s hard to
believe that five years have gone by already! I took a leap
of faith that year when I decided to uproot my life and
move back home to the Rochester, NY area. I had been
living in a small, rural city in Northwest Ohio called Van
Wert. I was just shy of my two year mark as the leader of
their Chamber. It had been a great opportunity for me to
move there and work with their small – but dynamic –
business community. I knew I would not stay there
forever but I did not plan to leave so quickly. Sometimes,
though, life presents you with an opportunity you just
cannot pass by.
What would it be like moving back to the area where I grew up? Since
leaving for college I had lived in a big city (Washington DC) and small ones
(Ashland, Van Wert) and felt pretty adaptable to wherever I found myself. I
admit, though, I never really thought I would come back to Rochester.
Growing up I was like a lot of other kids who could not wait to get out of here
and explore the world a bit. At first I thought that was exclusive to just people
around here but the more I have moved and met people I think that kids
everywhere, no matter the city or town have that feeling.
The job at this Chamber was a great opportunity. Professionally it was a
good move and I was excited to be able to see my family more. When the
opportunity came I could not pass it by. So now, five years into the position
what are my thoughts? A few things come to mind. I’ll start with the broad
ones and get more specific:
First, I have to say that I have loved being back in the Rochester area, and
I am not saying that just because of my family. Coming back as an
adult I see things through a little different lens. Rochester has had
its share of hard knocks, to be sure, but I also see some really
exciting things happening here. It’s a midsized city with a lot to
offer. Our leaders are working together now more than ever before
and I believe good things are ahead for Rochester.
Second, I’m really proud of what we have accomplished in the last five
years at the Chamber. I have had the privilege to work with a great
team of people. Our volunteers (Board & Committee Members) have
been strong supporters of the mission of what we are doing. I also
have an excellent staff team that has accomplished so much. People
often give me credit, but trust me, our success is thanks to the work
of the WHOLE Team! Whether it is additional benefits, great new
programs and events or an expanded membership base, I believe
strongly this organization is constantly growing and changing to
meet the needs of our members.
My last reflection is more personal. I will always be thankful to Anne
Loria, Kyle Van Putte and the other Board Members back in 2006
that took a chance on me and brought me home. There are a
multitude of reasons why I am thankful but the most important one
to me is that I have had some precious time to spend with family.
This year I have lost both my mother and my aunt to cancer. I have
spent plenty of time thinking about how different things would have
been if I had still been away from home. I had the privilege of
helping my dad care for my mom as the disease ravaged her life and
spent so many precious hours with my mom. I also had three years
of good time with her before she got sick. It’s been a long and
difficult year for me but despite it all I am very thankful for all the
blessings I have.
Five years ago on a snowy December day I walked into the Chamber office
for the first time as the President. I had no idea of all that lay ahead of me –
both good and bad. It’s a privilege to lead this fine organization and I look
forward to seeing what else the future will bring for us.

Cont from Cover (Volunteerism)
5) improves relations within the community 6) improves public image
and 7) improves morale and teamwork. From the standpoint of the
employee: 1) volunteerism helps them to acquire new skills, abilities and
serves as a career building tool 2) they gain fulfillment as a result of
their contribution to the community 3) helps them to become knowledgeable about the needs and opportunities within the community and
4) establishes a service oriented culture in their community.
Greece Chamber member Diane Celento, President of Rochester Travel Group, Inc. knows the meaning of success. She has owned
and operated her business for the past 22 years. Today she has a
$2,000,000+ business. She feels that volunteerism should be incorporated into business. “Success in the community leads to success in business,” remarks Diane. “When you are successful in business, you give
back to the community and to the less fortunate. From the business
standpoint, volunteering helps to build and promote teamwork here in
the office. There is a value that comes with learning to be supportive
and supporting one another. The meaning of team is “Together Everyone Achieves More” and volunteering definitely builds teamwork.”

Cont from page 9— “Cover StoryVolunteerism”
Washington DC and New York City,
NY is the largest volunteer network in

following results: 1) 83% of companies
surveyed use volunteer programs as
part of the corporate strategy to
address critical business issues 2) 83%
use volunteering to provide training
for employees 3) 97% acknowledge
that volunteering builds teamwork
skills 4) 68% agree that employees
volunteering helps the company keep

Paula Kosiorek, Office Manager
for NYS Senator Joseph Robach, has
been a volunteer in the Greece
community for the past thirty years. “I
believe that we all need to give back
to the community,” says Paula. “There
are many people in our community
that are less fortunate. I think that
when you give, you get back ten-fold.
I am an advocate for the less
privileged - like Two Doors
Community Resource Center, the
Greece Ecumenical Clothing Closet
and St. Joseph’s Villa. I was a big sister
at St. Joseph’s Villa for 20 years and a
foster mom for 5 years.” Paula is the
president of the Greece Performing
Arts Society (GPAS). The non-profit
organization provides a broad range
of artistic activities to Greece. “In the
last decade, some of my volunteering
efforts shifted towards the arts –
GPAS and Greece Paint Players,”
comments Paula. “We need music,
theatre and arts in our lives. Part of
volunteering is the fellowship needed
during the fundraisers to help support
these organizations. I wish everyone
would volunteer just once a month
and the world would be a much better
place. When you volunteer you are
contributing to the betterment of
humanity.” Paula volunteers for
numerous organizations and events.
The Greece Chamber of
Commerce offers many opportunities
for businesses and their employees to
become involved with the community
through volunteerism. Join a Chamber
committee. Volunteer your time at
one of our great events: Race on the
Ridge 5K, Taste of the Town, YEA,
Leadership Greece, or volunteer for
any of the many community
organizations out there! For more
information on how you and your
employees can become more involved
through volunteerism call the
Chamber office at 585-227-7272.
